>> with the 249th pick in the 2014 nfl draft, the st. louis rams select michael sam, defensive end, missouri. >> reporter: with that announcement michael sam becomes the first openly gay player drafted by the national football league. he got the news by telephone from the rams head coach jeff fisher who told him "you are a ram. the wait is finally over." for the all-american defensive end from missouri, it was an emotional moment. >> i am overwhelmed. i'm excited and i'm proud to be a ram. i knew i was going to get picked somewhere, and every team that passed me i was thinking how i'm going to sack their quarterback. >> reporter: congratulations came from the oval office. president obama said from the playing field to the corporate board room, lgbt americans prove every day that you should be

judged by what you do and not who you are. the nba's jason collins who became the first openly gay athlete in any of it the four major american sports when he came out in 2013 tweeted this comment "i wanted to say congrats to@mikesamfootball and@stlouisrams. great pick. good luck." >> he's done an outstanding job dealing with things and i believe he's prepared to skudiss the situation and get on to football. >> reporter: st. louis rams fans want to see michael sam hit the field. last season the team finished 7-9 and the bottom of the nfc west. >> he has a chance now so he's got to prove himself. >> i think he'll make a good player for the rams. they need somebody like that. >> will he be a distraction? i don't think so. i don't think so. he's a good player. so i think he'll prove himself. >> the next step is just to play some football. it's time to shut up and play some football. we need him.

>> so much to talk about. joining us now is joe carter. joe, what a big moment in history and to see michael sam's reaction, it just makes everybody smile. >> i watched that reaction last night as it came down and the live feed coming from somebody's house in california, i think he was with his agent but that was a powerful moment, i really, really liked that moment. this is unprecedented. it's historic but i think the nfl is very much ready for this moment. they had several months to prepare for this. michael sam came out in february so they've had months to prepare. this is not a surprise. before he came out there were discussion and reports there would be a group of current nfl players that were going to come out together so pressure could be taken off one player. for whatever reason that didn't happen, in addition to knowing that and michael sam came out in february and having months to prepare and they've also watched the nba. jason collins came out last summer. it's been almost a year they've watched the blueprint the nba set out.

jason collins, number 98 jersey the top player on nba.com. there's no reported incidents from fans or players since jason collins came out. >> and the game continues. >> absolutely. >> as we move forward, yes, he's been drafted, this makes history but he has to make the team as he moves forward. what are we expecting during the locker room, during training room? >> he'll have otas and then training camp in august. i expect in august it's going to be a media frenzy. this will be the biggest story to start the 2014 football season but if i'm the st. louis rams, the head coach and the general manager i'm going to put michael sam in front of the media one time, let him address everybody from "good morning america" to tmz and then pull michael sam back in the locker room and make it all about football and not allow him to talk to the media again until the 53-man final roster is set.

this is great not only from a football standpoint and geographical standpoint. missouri where he went to sclenlg two hours from st. louis. people are familiar who michael sam is, support him on and off the football field and from a football standpoint it's very good for him defensively. it's a great situation, congratulations to michael sam and the st. louis rams. >> what is really cool this is not the first time the rams have done something like this, making history. back in 1946 that's when the rams made history, drafting the first african-american in modern times to the nfl. so here they go again. >> think about that now. we think wow, they drafted the first black player. that's not a big deal anymore. ten years from now we'll think it's not that big of a deal at all. >> good to see you. thanks so much. look at this hail. there was a tornado, lots of

cleaning up in orek, missouri, where a twister left behind damage. 80% of the town near kansas city was forecasted after that tornado blew through yesterday. law enforcement officials are still going door to door checking on residents there. you can see them here pulling a woman to safety. this is what's left of her home. there's some damage. right now a lot of this whole area is without power because there are so many downed power lines. >> cnn meteorologist alexandra steele joins us now. good morning to you. do we know if the threat is over? >> the threat is not over. let me show you some more video, too. northeast of kansas city the hot spot yesterday. look at the massive tornado and when you watch this roll, look at the bottom right hand of your screen, you see this debris being blown around with this tornado so an awfully scary day yesterday. the threat does exist today for

long track tornados so here's the area of concern today. kansas, missouri and iowa, similar setup as yesterday. right now this is the area of concern, pretty quiet, no watches or warnings as of yet. this is what we saw yesterday, 11 reports of tornadoes, wind 49, some incredibly strong wind, 1 reports of hail. you saw on the video golf ball sized hail. there were reports of tennis ball sized hail to boot with this storm. an incredible amount of energy and incredible amount of uplift. right along this warm front and the dry line this is where we're going to see the most severe weather again expected today. hottest hit areas today kansas city down to st. angelo. another threat for a big severe day, long track tornadoes, hail and some strong winds. >> al sandexandra steele thanks much. in ukraine as voters head to

13 minutes after the hour. pro-russian separatists in eastern ukraine are lining up at the polls in donetsk for a controversial referendum vote to separate from the country's interim government. >> there's only one question on the ballot. do you support the act of independence of people's republic of donetsk. leaders in kiev and the west are calling this vote illegitimate. many worry today's results could push this country one step closer to civil war. >> for weeks, ukraine has been plagued by deadly clashes. we reported on them here between pro-russian militants and ukraine security forces. atika shubert joins us live from donetsk, ukraine. give us an idea of the turnout.

>> reporter: turnout as far as we can tell has been quite high. the official numbers from the self-declared donetsk people's republic is about 30% so far and we still have about ten more hours of voting. we've seen a lot of people showing up since this morning. dozens and dozens just in the last few hours or so here at this one polling station. so it does seem to be going ahead this vote. i want to quickly show you the ballot box behind me here. you can see they're transparent. most people don't even bother to fold their balance rots so you can see the yes votes at the bottom there and the flag you might notice at the front of the ballot box that's the flag for the donetsk people's republic, they organized this hastily put together referendum but of course they obviously want a yes vote as well. so is this an accurate representation, one that's verifiable, probably not. for many people here it's already a foregone conclusion. they know what the answer to this referendum is going to be.

they want to know what happens next. >> atika, i understand the russian television channel there is telling people where to go to vote and yet russian president vladimir putin has said let's delay this vote publicly. do you think that's really just to save face? is he and russia supporting what's happening there? >> reporter: it's really hard to know. i do note that reaction here was initially baffled when vladimir putin came out saying that the referendum should be postponed. they went ahead and pushed ahead with that vote here. clearly there is that sort of momentum here. it's really hard to see how many people want independence because as we can see it's a flawed process. we do know from talking to people is that they're angry and fearful that the government in kiev has not been able to resolve this conflict peacefully and that they have unable to stop the violence, that is their main concern for now. >> and what happens next is the next question.

atika shubert, thanks so much. right now, nigerians are taking to the streets in protest, demanding their government do more to bring home more than 200 girls kidnapped from their school nearly four weeks ago. this on the heels of a startling report that nigeria knew in advance about the kidnapping and yet did nothing. >> so that's happening in nigeria. saudi arabia's highest religious figure condemns the terror group that's taken responsibility for the mass kidnapping. he says boko haram is "set up to smear the image of islam." aisha sesay is in the capital. what is the latest efforts to find the girls. there are u.s. representatives trying to advise the nigerian government. where are they now? >> reporter: hi there, victor and ana. i think that's the key point you

made there, they're here to advise the nigerian government. the nigerian government still here to assist in the investigation. the focus is having meetings and really assessing the niger january military's capabilities and trying to identify where the gaps are in those capabilities. the teams that are here have expertise in hostage negotiations, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, that's the prittical expertise they hope will provide this turnaround that can lead to a break-through in ultimately locating these girls and bringing them home. you're right, there has been growing clamor in this country and around the world as people continue to shout loudly that the government must do all it can to find these girls and bring them home. victor? >> isha, obviously today is mother's day, our hearts even heavier for these families who have to be going through so much

pain they wait anxiously. how are these relatives holding up? >> reporter: it is a desperate time for these families. it's almost hard to put into words when you're in a room with these affected family members, just the feeling you get. they are so desperate. they are so fearful. i spoke to a father who lost two daughters in this raid, two daughters were taken off by boko haram in the raid april 14th. he told me all they do in his home is cry. he also gave us more insight as he has spoken to some of the girls that escaped as to what happened that night. take a listen to some of our conversation. >> they say that we are army, going to protect you, don't fear. from that time they all got together in one place. so they start banding the

welcome back. the search for a missing hot air balloon pilot is expected to resume shortly, the pilot is the last person who is missing following the deadly balloon crash at the festival outside richmond, virginia. the two other victims have been found and now identify identify. >> the university of richmond says two members of its staff program, ginny doyle and natalie lewis were on board when the air balloon crashed into power lines. >> good morning, erin. >> reporter: ana and victor, the rest of the hot air balloon festival was promptly canceled and virginia police held multiple briefings throughout the day saturday as they combed

through this densely wooded area looking for the remains from this terrible tragedy. >> we are now transitioning from a rescue operation to a recovery operation at this time. >> reporter: from a search and rescue mission to a recovery. virginia authorities confirming the terrifying hot air balloon accident was deadly for the three people on board. >> got a visual of the airborne hot air balloon, appears to be still smoking, still pretty high there. >> got a report that the basket has come off, so we're trying to find that right now. >> advise all units the airborne balloons aren't the issue, we need to locate the basket. >> reporter: authorities say they still haven't located that basket but they have retrieved the bodies of two of the three victims and are still looking for the third. searchers also retrieved debris and other items that would have been on the balloon. >> they have a tremendous help. we had anywhere from 30 to 40 calls to people who witnessed it here at the festival on friday

to neighbors, who people driving within the vicinity and it's been a tremendous help. >> reporter: more than 100 people searched saturday and civil air parole assisted. challenging because the basket and balloon separated after snagging a power line and catching fire, leaving two of the passengers witnesses say to jump or fall. >> my boyfriend came out, oh my god, look at the sky. the balloon's on fire and all we had seen was stuff falling from the sky, the basket, the balloon, everything was on fire. >> reporter: the national transportation safety board is investigating and the ntsb sent a letter just this year to the faa suggesting there is insufficient oversight of commercial hot air balloons. ana and victor? >> so many unanswered questions. erin mcpike, thank you. some rough weather this weekend. we were talking about snow potentially in the denver area. also a tornado rips through missouri destroying homes, buildings, power lines there. storm chasers are catching the destruction and we're going to

hello again. bottom of the hour now. welcome back. i'm ana cabrera. >> i'm vick-to-blackwell. five things you need to know for your new day. tornado that raced through orrick, missouri, yesterday ripped roofs off of some buildings and completely destroyed others. so far, though, no one has been reported injured. so good news there. but local law enforcement are going house to house to check on the residents. 11 suspected tornadoes were reported across missouri, kansas and iowa. a judge sentenced chris brown to more jail time for violating his probation in the 2009 beating of ex-girlfriend rihanna. on friday the pop star admitted getting into a fight in washington state and was sentenced to 130 days in jail. his lawyer says the l.a. county sheriff's department has been

releasing some inmates early and he thinks brown could be released within the next week. panic overnight at a mall in new jersey. car exploded there. it was mistaken for gunfire. the entire car didn't explode though. shoppers took to social media to report that a shooting had occurred. police evacuated the westfield garden state plaza mall in paramis, the same mall where a real shooting took place last november. there was a problem with the engine there. number four, the los angeles clippers take on the oklahoma city thunder in game four of that playoff series this afternoon. right now the clippers are down 2-1 in this series. it has been a real battle for that team. the clippers of course having to fight through plenty of distractions with their owner, donald sterling, the center of controversy, and an nba advisory committee is going to meet again this week to discuss forcing sterling to sell the team. and number five. >> 249th pick in the 2014 nfl

impact on the rest of the country. >> there's also concern that today's results could trigger even more violence as the country inches toward a possible civil war. several people dying in clashes in the last 48 hours in the eastern part of ukraine. let's discuss what the executive director for the initiative of russian culture at an american university, delighted to have him with us this morning. thank you. >> thank you guys. >> let's talk about what's happening in ukraine this morning. despite the calls from the west, despite even the public calls from vladimir putin himself not to move forward with this vote, it is moving forward. are you surprised? >> no, not surprised. because the poll or rather the referendum is really a form of an opinion poll and we know that opinion tolls in eastern ukraine reflected almost three-quarters of ukraine do not trust the kiev government and three-quarters of the population don't want to

secede from the country. they want greater autonomy, greater self-determination within a unified ukraine. >> compare and contrast this vote happening today and the one that happened in crimea, which had some very drastic results with the annexation of that peninsula. >> absolutely. these are two different situations. first of all there had been a referendum in crimea in 1994 which shows the exact same results for separation from ukraine and joining to russia but crimea's overwhel mipgly russian populated and the feel there was much stronger for reunification with russia. the eastern ukrainian regions are quite different. there's enormous amount of discontent with the government especially after the launching of the operation against the so-called separatists, but there's also very little feeling towards joining russia but there is great, great thirst for autonomy. >> we know the interim president has warned that if they move forward with this vote and it actually passes, there are going

to be some consequences. he said he would cut the residents off from the national economy, cut them off from social programs and he said, "it's a step nowhere for these regions. it say euphoria that may lead to some complex consequences." what are we talking about? what could happen next? >> this is a threat that is not going to help the kiev government. the same thing as with the military operation that's been launched against people in eastern ukraine. i don't think that ukraine will follow through, the kiev government will follow through, rather, with the threats because it needs the eastern regions. they are the biggest contributors to ukraine's gdp. the regions having the referendum are the most industrialized and have the least unemployment in the rest of the country. >> anton fedyashin we're looking ahead to two weeks from today with the national election and hope to have you back to talk about that, too. >> thank you very much, guys. 180 million people in 45

standpoint, only two hours where he went to college at the university of missouri. lot of fans know him very well and support him on and off the football field and from a football standpoint he fits into that defensive scheme just well. he has a lot ahead of him. he has to make the 5 -man roster, not assured to make ma roster. he has to go into training camp. it's going to be a media frenzy. you're talking about everybody from the morning shows to the entertainment programs will be there and it will be interesting to see how they handle the michael sam situation with the media. >> let's talk about this in the context of the broader major four. they thought this perception of -- >> bullying. >> bullying, yes, and i'm looking for the larger term, but bullying as it relates to the miami dolphins, the sterling problem with the nba. is this a panacea for this or is it too early to know? i mean, of not being inclusive. does this help fight off that perception? >> i think this is a positive moment for the nfl.

three people on board. >> i have a visual of the airborne hot air balloon. appears to be still smoking, still pretty high in the air. >> got a report that the basket has come off so we're trying to find that right now. >> advise all units the airborne balloons aren't the issue, we need to locate the basket. >> reporter: authorities say they still haven't located the basket but retrieved the bodies of two of the three victims certaini in searching for the third. >> we've had probably between 30 to 40 calls from people who witnessed it from here at the festival on friday to neighbors to people driving within the vicinity and it's been a tremendous help. we've been following one those folks. >> reporter: more than 100 people searched saturday and civil air patrol assisted, challenging because the basket and balloon separated after snagging a power line and catching fire, leading two of the passengers, witnesses say,

steele joins us now. what is the threat here? >> again another threat. you guys, can you believe the number of storm chasers out there that the video now that we can see with the complexity of these tornadoes, massive tornadoes on the ground yesterday, reports of at least 11. here's a look at where we're seeing. no tornado watches or warnings as of yet but there will be. areas of concern today, kansas, missouri, iowa, just a big voracious storm with a lot of energy. on the cold side of this, denver, colorado, between six and nine inches of snow with this system today. on the front side, of course, we're going to see tornadoes, hail, some very strong winds. these are the reports from yesterday, 11 reports of tornadoes, 49 very strong wind reports. hail, 91 reports. hail as big as tennis balls fell from this system so an incredible amount of uplift. upper air energy comes in, the severe setup. on the cold side the denver

side, half a foot of snow for them, more in the mountains. that is a lot of snow this time of year but they've seen a foot of snow in june, the second week of june. it's late but not that late. along this dry line and where we'll show that warm front, des moines, kansas city, oklahoma city and down towards san angelo, texas, the potential for long track very strong tornadoes. most likely here though in the northern quadrants, even country country has the potential for some severe storms today. kansas city, wichita, oklahoma city today. the threat moves eastward for tomorrow. not a lot of movement have this storm although the threat for tornadoes greater today than tomorrow. big picture wherever you are, a little rain in the northeast this morning but beautiful mother's day there from albany to new york to boston. the southeast temperatures incredibly warm, well above average, atlanta, charlotte, mostly a dry day, a few scattered showers. we're going to watch all the temperatures be so above average today. you guys it's really going to take the temperatures to drop

8:00 this morning. we've also seen other people coming in putting in multiple ballots. is this a verifiable, accurate representation of the will of the people? at this point, probably not, but we are waiting for results to come out later today. of course, no way for us to independently verify those results, but in a sense, the answer to the referendum hardly matters. many people think it's a foregone conclusion. what they're waiting for is what the reaction will be from kiev and from moscow. >> atika, do we know from the people who are there what they believe the tangible fruit of this vote will be? >> yes, you know, a number of people -- i have to stress that even if this vote doesn't come out as legitimate, there have been a lot of people coming out, and they're frustrated and angry, especially with the government in kiev. they feel that the government in kiev was unable or unwilling to stop the violence, and that's

where we're putting the blame so that's why people seem to be coming out to vote today, but what will this retferendum end p with? some hope an independent government, some hoping to join russia. they're hoping to change from the government in kiev. >> i know we don't have much time but you were showing us earlier the ballots were flopping out of some of those boxes and could you see people, what they were voting. do you know, are people voting both ways or are these just people who are supporting independence that are coming out to vote in the first place? >> reporter: well, look, we can look straight into the ballot boxes here and very few people have actually folded up the ballots. the vast majority of them as we've seen already have "yes" on them. i have seen somebody come in and vote no. people are coming out with differing opinions. we don't know what the actual numbers will be. we'll seen people slip in

aspirations. >> we'll join eleanor clift, contributor to "the daily beast." let's talk about this as a republican strategy. do you think that's just attack hillary until they have a candidate that they can get behind? >> well, if you look at hillary clinton's approval ratings among democrats there, soaring into the 70s, and i think among the broader public at large she does very well. she looks like a sure thing for the democratic nomination, and she looks like a good bet to be the first woman to become president. you look on the republican side and they're really in disarray, they're fighting among themselves about various issues and they're looking at various tactics to try to tarnish hillary clinton's image, and i think benghazi is certainly one of them but i think dredging up the monica lewinsky scandal is not going to go very far with the american public. >> let's talk about the latter person and then talk about the

former. at this point in the 2008 cycle, hillary clinton her approval ratings were just as high, she was far and away the front-runner but republicans then, even before this "vanity fair" article, did not talk about monica lewinsky at this point in the '08 cycle as they are ahead of 2016. why this time around is monica lewinsky coming up, do you think? >> well the '08 cycle you had barack obama running against hillary clinton so the republicans could stand down, you could say. i think lewinsky is coming up now because she's written this article in "vanity fiair" tryin to inject herself into national conversation. she did a barbara walters interview a number of years ago, an hbo special, she had a reality show. she wants to be taken seriously. i think she wants to be forgiven, if you will, and i think she's frustrated that at 40 years old she really hasn't

found her way in the world and she is, this is another attempt on her part to basically understand, i think, what she did, and to get the country to view her in a different p perspecti perspective. if she wants to do that, i think posing in a come hither pose on a couch is probably not exactly the best way to do it, although as i think any woman would probably jump at the chance to be photographed in such a flattering light. she looks good, but she's, really has not been able to find a career path that is satisfying and you read the article, you feel kind of sorry for her, but the notion that she somehow is going to negatively impact the presidential race, bill clinton and hillary clinton have prospered since the whole scandal, and bill clinton won or the democrats won an election in '98 basically on people's

revulsion on all of the excess all around monica lewinsky, the investigation, the various players. i think dredging that up does not constitute a modern political scandal. that belongs in the history books. >> i think, eleanor, also, it's worth mentioning this is monica lewinsky coming forward. she writes in the article or part of the interview saying this is her wanting to get out in front of that next presidential cycle, so that she doesn't get dragged back into it eventually and that could still happen. let's talk about republican strategy as well here. are republicans getting ahead of themselves by attacking hillary and going after whoever this opponent is going to be? should they be focusing on the midterm elections which are right around the corner? >> i think it's part of the midterm election, too. benghazi folds nicely into energizing their base to come out and vote i guess trying to

portray hillary clinton in a negative light and warning the republican base she could be the next president might also energize their voters to come to the polls. so i think it's all of a piece. i don't know that you can necessarily separate out the two elections. >> let me get one question in here, aside from secretary clinton, the republicans this week announce their seven members of this hearing, this investigation into benghazi. five spots open for democrats. democrats are pondering the idea of boycotting. gloria borgia has an op-ed on cnn.c cnn.com. it says bad idea. what do you think? >> i agree. if the democrats are not resp t represented, it will be one republican question after another. the witnesses who chairman trey dowdy is calling won't get relief when they are questioned by democrats who are more
