was harder to sell. just think in a few years current taboos will seem prehistory. jeanne moos, cnn, new york. and anderson starts now. good evening, everyone. tonight at 360 exclusive for the first time since he was banned from the nba for making racist comments donald sterling speaks out. i sat down with the embattled clippers owner in his home for a no holds interview. there was no pr entourage telling him what to say or stop. we spoke for about an hour and 20 minutes and for the first hour sterling was apologetic, denied he was a racist. then towards the end he said some things that many of you will find shocking what he said

about magic johnson will be offensive. you'll hear donald sterling explain, excuse and apologize repeatedly. we'll leave it to you to decide if you think his apologies sincere. how did we get here. it started with those recordings. he's talking about a picture she posted on instagram with her and magic johnson. >> he happens to be black, i'm sorry. >> i think it's nice that you admire him. i've known him well and he should be admired. and i'm just saying that it's too bad you can't admire him privately and during your entire [ expletive ] life your whole life admire him bring him here, feed him, [ expletive ]. >> people call you and tell you i have black people on my instagram and it bothers you.

mistake and i'm here with you today to apologize and to ask for forgiveness for all people that i've hurt and i've hurt so many people. so many innocent people. and i've hurt myself. you know, i spoke to a girl that i was fond of. and i don't know why -- when i listen to that tape, i don't even know how i could say words like that. i'm not a racist. i love people. i always have. but those words came out of my mouth, i guess. and i'm so sorry. i'm so apologetic. >> what are you sorry about? >> well i'm sorry so many people are hurt. my little grandchild goes to a catholic nursery and they were passing around candy to

everybody. when they got to her they said we don't give candy to racists. so it hurts me. i hurt my ex-wife. she is a beautiful person. she goes to the hospital and she's a volunteer at cedar sinai. when i went to law school she worked at the children's hospital. she's a give. at this staying her life she still works. she didn't need this. her whole life blew up. >> are you talking about shelly? >> shelly, yes. i never dreamt that this could happen. it's a terrible, terrible nightmare. >> let me ask you -- let's start

about talking about the tape. did you know you were being recorded? >> no, of course not. of course not. no. >> do you know when it was recorded? were you together in a room with v. stiviano? >> yes. i remember some of the dialogue in a living room. >> so it was just you and her in the room? >> just the two of us, yes. >> so you didn't know she was recording or there was a recording device. >> no, i didn't know she was recording. and she was talking so strange. all of a sudden about politics. but i want to explain a couple of things that i said. one of the things that i said was "don't bring blacks to my game." 25% of the people at my games is black. she would always use the black word. that's a black girl.

so when she said i'll bring four gorgeous black guys to the game, players, i was a little jealous, maybe. >> when did she say that? >> just before. and i said to her, "don't bring them to the game," because of my jealousy. she was baiting me to say things. >> you're saying before the recording that we heard she had said she was going to bring four black players and she specifically said black players and you're saying that's what this conversation sparked from, stemmed from? >> yes. and so i used her words. i mean -- i really have to apologize to all the people that have been hurt. for the home hear that i'm a possible racist is so painful to me becaus i'm not a racist and i've never been a racist. it's not me. >> when you saw them take off

their warm up jerseys in reverse and clippers name wasn't on in that first game what did you think? >> i didn't pay attention. they are clippers. they are mine and i'm theirs. that's how i feel. i would do anything for them. i made a mistake. i hope it's in their heart to forgive me for that mistake. i said a few words. i don't know why the girl had me say those things. >> you're saying you were set up. >> well, yes, i was baited. it's not the way i talk. i don't talk about people, for one thing, ever. i talk about ideas and other things but i don't talk about people. >> do you know how the tape got released? >> no. >> do you think she did it? >> i don't know. 80-year-old man is kind of foolish and i'm kind of foolish. i thought she liked mean really cared for me. i guess being 50 years older

than her i was deluding myself. >> you were in an intimate relationship with her? >> i don't know what you mean -- >> she said you weren't. >> i don't think a gentleman should discuss any personal items that go on with a woman, and i -- >> do you trust her >> i don't want to answer that particular question. >> do you trust her now? >> no, i don't trust her. i wish i could ask her why. and if she was just setting me up. i think that people say she was taping me for two years. so, maybe i was just fooling myself thinking for two years that she cared for me. she certainly acted like it. >> her lawyer made a statement she was your archivist. >> what does that mean? too young for archives. >> you don't want your story written just yet? >> no. >> so you didn't know the tape

was being made. when you first heard the tape was released, did you automatically remember making those statements? >> no. no. >> a lawyer of hers claims she gave some of the recordings to friends and that one of the friends sold it to tmz. do you believe that? >> i really don't know. i don't really want to talk about her. i want to talk about me. and the mistakes that i made. and i want to correct them. >> let's talk about you then. let's talk about the tape itself. let's talk about the actual statements. >> i'm responsible. i wanted to apologize also to my partners. i have 29 partners in the league that's a wonderful league. i respect them and i love every owner, every owner knows me. i love the commissioner. i'm sure that it's terribly difficult for him to impose severe punishment because he knows me so well.

but here he is trying his best to -- he actually believes in doing everything in their power to limit. you know, racism. and here he's sitting there behind his desk, i guess, and the explosion comes on his desk and i feel bad that i caused it. >> we'll talk a lot more about the league's reaction. something i pressed sterling on his claim that it wasn't race it was just jealous this woman he was interested in she was bringing other guys to games. he didn't say other guys he specifically said black guys. later something we did not expect sterling comments about why magic johnson in sterling's opinion no role model. >> i just don't think he is a good example for the children of los angeles. that he would go and do what he did and then get aids.

this is the first time donald sterling has spoken publicly on the record since he was banned from the nba for making racist comments. in sterling's analysis he's not a racist he was just jealous because the woman he was

interested in because she was bringing other guys to the games. that was his defense in a phone call that was released to radar online last week. >> what the hell i'm talking to a girl. the girl is black. i like her. i'm jealous she's with other black guys. i want her. what i can tell her in private i don't want you to be with anybody else? >> i want to hear more from sterling about this idea it was jealousy not racism that motivated him. take a listen. >> here's what i don't understand. i get you were saying you were jealous, you didn't want her to be seen with other guys. you didn't want her to be seen in photographs with other guys. >> did you ever like a girl, were you ever jealous of her a little bit if she was with other guys. it's not that i didn't want her to be photographed. >> you were jealous? >> i admit, i was jealous. it was stupid. >> the thing is, though, what you were saying wasn't i don't want you to be seen with other

you're trying to connect this. elgin baylor has nothing to do with the things that i said 20 years later. what did it have to do? >> elgin baylor made a claim you had a plantation mentality and now in this thing you say you feed these guys -- sfu have more of a plantation mentality than i do. you know. i think you're more of a racist than i am. i'm not a racist and i've never been a racist i'll never be a racist. i don't know what that means. you're asking me about questions. what do you mean a mentality. >> mentality, plantation mentality you feel you own these guys. they are working for them? >> do i own them. my players earn $100 million a year. >> in this tape you're saying i support them, i give them food, clothes, cars. >> i create opportunities for them. so they can make 100 million. i don't give them anything, believe me. those players can get that same

in donald sterling his downfall is a big result of the media. he told me the players still love him. he has tons of support and the nba doesn't necessarily want him out. the question is he in denial. here's how sterling responded when i pointed out the players on his team say they do not want to work for him. >> let me just say that i apologized to the league. people want me to hire a wall of lawyers and have them hire a wall of lawyers and go to war. i don't think that's the answer. >> what your going to do? >> i think the answer is the league is a good league. all honest people. and i think that whatever they decide that has to be done, i think i should work with them and do it. >> the nba says they want you out. your willing to give up ownership of the clippers? >> well, i'm not sure that's what they want. >> that is what they want.

>> that's your opinion and that's what the media says. i'm a good owner. i have a good team. there are people that want to buy my team. but because the media says that the owner want me out doesn't mean that they want me out. >> have you talked to any of the other owners. >> i've talked to several of the owners. >> have any of them supported you? >> of course they support me. they can't understand why i would say that. >> you're saying some owners of the nba teams that want you to remain owner of the club? >> i don't speak for the league or for the owners. they speak for themselves. >> have any owners told you that? >> i didn't ask them. i embarrassed the league. i humiliated them. i don't know how, why i did it. i mean it's so terrible. >> so you don't believe, though, that the owners would vote to have you removed as owner? >> i don't think so. i don't think so. >> if they did would you fight that in court?

>> you think it was just pressure? >> what do you think? do you think they all are going to walk off? can any of us just stop working? we all have to work. we all have to earn a living. we all have bills. we work for an employer we don't love. i contend that they love me. >> you think they still love you? >> i do. >> you believe the players of the los angeles clippers -- >> absolutely. they know i'm not a racist and i'm not a racist. >> why haven't they come forward and said that? >> well see people are intimidated even the thought of racism. and around the world, they call me from australia, from london, and they ask me, different media, are you a racist? i'm not a racist. >> well, sterling's estranged wife hopes to keep her 50% stake in the team so the future of the clippers ownership is still very

much in flux. shelly sterling broke her silence in an interview with barbara walters. >> it was horrible when i heard it. i mean it was just degrading and it made me sick to hear it. but as far as a racist, i really don't think he's a racist. >> have you discussed these remarks at all with your husband? >> he saw the tape, and he said i don't remember saying that. i don't remember ever saying those things. >> what did you think then? >> that's when i thought he has dementia. >> i spoke with donald sterling for more than an hour and doesn't make me an expert on his mental state but he doesn't strike me as someone suffering from dementia. you need to know somebody for a long time to see early on set dementia. but donald sterling without counsel there, without a pr team there clearly had things he

wanted to say. during the interview he was present. if i skipped around on questions he would sometimes come back to questions i asked so he could finish his answers. certainly if he had clear signs ever dementia we would be -- it's not something i would allow an interview to go forward with. up next what donald sterling said to me about magic johnson instead of trying to soften any of his comments he crossed a line that will no doubt spark new outrage. >> what kind of a guy goes over tory city, has sex with every girl and then catches hiv. is that somebody i want to respect and tell our kids about? i think he should be ashamed of himself. i think he should go into the background. but what does he do for the black people? doesn't do anything. in pursuit of all things awesome, amazing,

we're back with my exclusive interview with donald sterling, first time he's being talked since he was banned for life from the nba. you heard him say repeatedly he's sorry. he also said he was baited to make those comments. he told me he didn't know why that girl made him say those

things as if he had no control of his words. magic johnson tweeted he and his wife will never go a clippers game again as long as donald sterling is an owner. in his rant he berated stiviano for being seen with the legend. sterling bashed magic johnson again. i'm sure it will be deeply offensive to many people. magic johnson has made a public comment. do you have something to say to him? >> what i can say to him? it doesn't matter. it doesn't matter. i'm hurt, but it doesn't matter >> you're hurt that he -- that he said -- that he spoke out publicly. >> i'm hurt he called me up and he said don't do anything, wait until you hear from me. then somebody called me later and said he doesn't want to be involved. and then he released a tape that i said to him that i talked to him in confidence.

interest. they want to get a fishing pole. we want to help people. if they don't have money we'll loan to it you. one day you'll pay us back. i'm just telling you he does nothing, it's all talk. >> are your saying that african-americans don't contribute to african-american communities as much as jewish people do. >> there's no african-american -- never mind. i'm sorry. you know, they all want to play golf with me. everybody wants to be with me. >> by the way magic johnson has a foundation that's been around 30 years that's raised millions of dollars for hiv/aids awareness. we'll tell you about it later this hour. sterling stopped himself before he finished that thought about african-americans. earlier in the interview he made it clear what he thinks on the subject of charitable work those of his own and african-americans. it started when i asked him about his relationship with magic johnson. you have talked to him?

>> twice. and then -- yeah. >> did you apologize? >> he knew the girl he said. he knew the girl well. >> did you apologize to him? >> well, if i said anything wrong i'm sorry. he's a good person and he -- what am i going to say? has he done everything he can do to help minorities? i don't think so. but i'll say it, i'll say it. he's great. but i just don't think he is a good example for the children of los angeles. that he would go and do what he did and then get aids. i mean, come on. maybe he doesn't think i could be a good owner. i remember when he came from detroit, he came to my house.

you know, he was a great player, great player. but what i would like to know exactly what -- what does he do? he works with the dodgers. >> he's got a business. he owns movie theaters. >> i spent millions on giving away and helping minorities. does he do that? that's one problem i have. jews, when they get successful, they will help their people. and some of the african-americans, maybe i'll get in trouble again. they don't want to help anybody. what has magic johnson really done for children's hospital which kids are lying in the hallways. they are sick. they need a bed. what has he done for any hospital? what has he done for any group? i don't know. maybe he's done a lot.

i know he's successful in business. but i'm not interested in business any more at all. i'm interested in helping people. >> you are interested in maintaining ownership of the clippers. that's business. you can take -- you can take hundreds of millions of dollars from the sale of the team and help whoever you wanted with that money. >> and maybe i'll do that. >> at that lot more on facts actual facts of magic johnson's on giving back. magic johnson's foundation he founded in 1991 currently has four stars the best rate portion. foundation provides funds hiv/aids awareness, testing and treatment as well as scholarships and mentoring for minority students and other to support ethnic diverse communities. as chairman and ceo of magic johnson enterprises johnson invested heavily again millions in underserved urban communities. donald sterling does not know those facts.

filmmaker spike lee joins me tonight to talk about all of this. overall what do you make of donald sterling? of what he said? >> why they let him speak. who is around him -- >> that's an interesting thing. there was no lawyer there. no pr person there. just kind of him. >> i'm amazed. i don't know -- >> for the record magic johnson has the magic johnson foundation. his business life invests in inner-city communities. his foundation has given millions on hiv/aids education, on overall education on scholarships to people, on, you know, working communities. so for 20 years he's -- >> an attack on magic is crazy. he's messing with the wrong brother. and magic is loved by everybody around the world. and to talk about some other

stuff that has nothing to do with nothing is ridiculous. and the whole what jews do and what blacks don't, that's insane. anderson, i did a documentary which was nominated for an academy award called "four little girls"ing about the bombing of a church in alabama and i interviewed george wallace and this reminds me of george wallace in that interview. >> how so? >> he was trying -- all the stuff he did, all he could talk about was i bought school books for black kids who didn't have school books. he didn't want to hear about the bombing. the german shepherds, the hoses and for him to say, you know, how he's helped minorities and then try to juxtapose that with

despite being banned from the nba donald sterling still feels very much a part of it. as i was leaving after our interview he was settling in to watch the clippers game from his home. he's not loud to go see it live. he can't go games. he clearly feels he's still a part of the team and has a future of the team. ceo gave his thoughts whether the sterling has any chance of staying in the game. >> my personal belief is that the league will prevail, which means that there will be an ownership change. that's a personal belief based
