8:01 pm
throughout this hour you'll hear donald sterling explain, excuse and apologize repeatedly. we'll leave it to you to decide if you think his apologies are sincere. but first we want to quickly set the stage about how we got here. it started with those recordings. they were released online of sterling talking to a woman named v. stiviano. he's talking about a picture she posted on instagram with her and magic johnson. >> he happens to be black, i'm sorry. >> i think it's nice that you admire him. i've known him well and he should be admired. and i'm just saying that it's too bad you can't admire him privately and during your entire [ expletive ] life your whole life admire him bring him here, feed him, [ expletive ]. i don't care. you can do anything. but don't put him on instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me and don't bring him to my games, okay? >> people call you and tell you i have black people on my instagram and it bothers you. >> yeah.
8:02 pm
it bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast you're associating with black people. do you have to? >> you associate with black people. >> i'm not ewe and you're not me. you're supposed to be a delicate wife or delicate girl. don't come to my games. don't bring back people. don't come. >> do you know that you have a whole team that's black that plays for you. >> do i know? i support them and give them food. and clothes. and cars. and houses. who gives it to them? does someone else give to it them? do i know that i have -- who makes the game? do i make the game or do they make the game? is there 30 owners that created the league? >> so did that recording capture the real donald sterling or was he being set up. his strong opinions on that want as he tried to answer the fundamental question is he a racist. >> i'm not a racist.
8:03 pm
i made a terrible, terrible mistake and i'm here with you today to apologize and to ask for forgiveness for all people that i've hurt and i've hurt so many people. so many innocent people. and i've hurt myself. you know, i spoke to a girl that i was fond of. and i don't know why -- when i listen to that tape, i don't even know how i could say words like that. i'm not a racist. i love people. i always have. but those words came out of my mouth, i guess. and i'm so sorry. i'm so apologetic. >> what are you sorry about? >> well i'm sorry so many people are hurt. my little grandchild goes to a catholic nursery and they were

and the name "clippers" wasn't on in that first game, what did you think? >> i didn't pay attention. they are clippers. they are mine and i'm theirs. that's how i feel. i would do anything for them. i made a mistake. i hope it's in their heart to forgive me for that mistake. i didn't mean it. i said a few words. i don't know why the girl had me say those things. >> you're saying you were set up. >> well, yes, i was baited. i mean, it's not the way i talk. i don't talk about people, for one thing, ever. i talk about ideas and other things but i don't talk about people. >> do you know how the tape got released? >> no. >> do you think she did it? >> i don't know. i mean, an 80-year-old man is kind of foolish and i'm kind of foolish. i thought she liked me and really cared for me. i guess being 50 years older than her i was deluding myself. >> you were in an intimate

was being made. when you first heard the tape was released, did you automatically remember making those statements? >> no. no. >> a lawyer of hers claims she gave some of the recordings to friends and that one of the friends sold it to tmz. do you believe that? >> i really don't know. i don't really want to talk about her. i want to talk about me. and the mistakes that i made. and i want to correct them. >> let's talk about you, then. let's talk about the tape itself. let's talk about the actual statements. >> i'm responsible. i wanted to apologize also to my partners. i have 29 partners in the league that's a wonderful league. i respect them and i love every owner, every owner knows me. i love the commissioner. i'm sure that it's terribly difficult for him to impose severe punishment because he knows me so well.

but here he is trying his best the league actually believes in doing everything in their power to eliminate it, you know, racism. and here he's sitting there behind his desk, i guess, and this explosion comes on his desk. and i feel bad that i caused it. >> we'll talk a lot more about the league's reaction. something i pressed sterling on his claim that it wasn't race it was just jealous this woman he was interested in she was bringing other guys to games. i pointed out that on the recordings he doesn't say other guys. he specifically says black guys. we'll hear his response to that next. later something we did not expect sterling comments about why magic johnson in sterling's opinion no role model. >> i just don't think he is a good example for the children of los angeles. that he would go and do what he did and then get aids.

time. it's called a strike. >> he clearly believes he can maintain ownership of this team. i mean he believes -- >> he's delusional. >> he believes there's business deals to be done. that there's money to be made. that he's the one to do it. >> he's making the nba look like the laughing stock and if i was an owner, he has to go. with the quickness and his wife. >> when he said he doesn't know -- you know i brought up the whole plantation mentality which is a comment elgin baylor made back in a lawsuit in 2009. he doesn't even understand what a plantation mentality is, that he loves everybody equally. is there anything he could have said that would have convinced you that he's not who you think he is? >> no. no. because -- you can just look at him, hear him talk, and he's delusional. and he's not in touch with today's world. he's back there with "leave it
8:45 pm
to beaver" or "ozzie and harriett." those days are gone. over. we're not -- america's not going back to that. >> do you think he should speak more? do you think he should speak less? >> he should s-f, shut -- >> s-t. >> yeah, yeah -- shut the you know what -- up. i'm dyslexic. >> takes me a little while as well. >> he's just, he says that magic should go away in the background? he's the one who should go away in the background. >> he thinks this is a media creation. the media creating this or trumping it up. the players know who he is. >> he needs help. he needs some advisers, lawyers or something. he can afford them. because he's just out there on his own just talking crazy. and he's not making it better.
8:46 pm
>> what do you recommend somebody in this situation do? you know, somebody has been accused of racism. it's a difficult thing to say i'm not a racist. no matter when you -- when you end up saying the sentence, i'm not a racist, it inevitably sounds bad. how do you go about correcting something like this? do you think? is there a way? >> i don't know if it's correctible. and the more he talks, the more he's proven that he is one. so i just, adam silver, the owners they got to do something with him and his wife. >> you say move quickly. >> excuse me? >> you're saying, move quickly? >> i mean everybody was applauding, you know the decision, banned for life and then it's just like, it's crickets now. where are they in the process of moving forward? >> spike, good have you here. >> thank you.
8:47 pm
>> you might expect donald sterling would be blasting v. stiviano for recording the comments that cost him so much. instead, he surprised me again. up next what he thinks now about the woman he says betrayed his trust. you still think -- >> she's not relevant to this conversation. i don't know why she did what she did. i wish god would tell me. but whatever she did, good or bad, i'm the guilty one for uttering those terrible, ugly words that i don't mean. of complete darkness.

more now on any exclusive interview with donald sterling. earlier you heard him tell me he thought he was set up that got him banned from the nba for life, baited by the girl, v. stiviano, who recorded the conversation during an argument according to tmz, who posted the recording. when she's in public she's wearing this very awesome full face visor. her relationship with the 80-year-old is unclear and her motivations for making the tape is also uncertain. there's plenty of speculation about it. in an interview with barbara walters, she says that she
8:52 pm
doesn't think that sterling is racist. she called him a kind and generous man. he talked about how much she hurt him. did you say to somebody that you should have paid v. stiviano off. >> no. >> did she ask you for money? do you believe she was trying to extort money from you in any way? >> you know, forgive me for saying this, but she is a good person. she is a beautiful person. there's 15 of her, 15 children, 15 hispanic kids, sisters and brothers and she supports them all. perhaps she's made some mistakes. i thought she cared for me. i was stupid. how could a girl care for a man 51 years older. she didn't -- she wouldn't release those tapes. but she's not a bad person, you know. she has to survive.
8:53 pm
she's a street person. but inside she's a good person. >> you still think she's a good person? >> but she's not relevant to this conversation. i don't know why she did what she did. i wish god would tell me, but whatever she did, good or bad, i'm the guilty one for uttering those terrible, ugly words that i don't mean. i made such a mistake. i thought that woman really cared for me. but thank god this has all come to the light because it could have been worse and she could have -- i don't know what she wants. i don't know how it happened. >> she told barbara walters there's other tapes -- there's other recordings out there. >> they say there's a hundred. >> do you believe there's other things you said which you may regret? >> i don't know what she baited me to say. >> do you have the sense she was
8:54 pm
wanting money from you, more money than you've already given her? >> i used to think i understood women. i don't think i do any more. i don't know. i don't know why she released it. she never said what you just said. >> she never directly asked for money? >> pardon me. >> she never directly asked for money or extorted money? >> no. you know, if i really can be honest, this girl, a hundred men could look at her and perhaps they wouldn't even think she's pretty. but she was something special. and the point that i'm making is she was a woman who really never asked for anything. she had a way of walking by neiman marcus and looking in the
8:55 pm
window and saying, sweetie, do you think that that dress is beautiful? if you're a man you would want to go buy the dress. >> you gave her multiple cars and an apartment. you were very generous to her? >> i was generous. i'll cover that with you. but some women -- she was so nice and so sweet for the two years. i just -- i just couldn't believe she was so sweet and so nice. and she never really asked -- she tried to help her family, the 15 people. what a job. >> you're still sympathetic towards her. >> i just would like to know why she did it. it's like a woman stabbing you in the chest or shooting you. and sometimes women say i love him and they kill him. >> up next what donald sterling did after our interview that may surprise you. all we do is go out to dinner. that's it? i mean, he picks up the tab every time, which is great... he's using you.

despite being banned from the nba donald sterling still feels very much a part of it. as i was leaving after our interview he was settling in to watch the clippers game from his home. he's not allowed to go to see it live. he can't go games. he clearly feels he's still a part of the team and has a future with the team. the interim ceo of the clippers gave his thoughts on whether
9:00 pm
sterling has any chance of staying in the game. >> my personal belief is that the league will prevail, which means that there will be an ownership change. that's a personal belief based on having not only looked at the docs but adam silver in the eye and seeing the determination. >> we shall see. donald sterling certainly has a lot more to say about that topic, about his future role with team and his wife's possible future role. he'll talk about it tomorrow night. magic johnson will i'm bill weir. our lead story is anderson cooper and this stunning interview with donald sterling. i was watching people pick their jaws up off the microphone floor moments ago. anderson, it's incredible. i imagine there's greatest hits here. i have to ask you about this magic johnson exchange. why did he decide to attack one
