""ac 360"" starts right now. hey, good evening. thanks for joining me. more of my exclusive interview embattled clippers owner donald sterling. the parts you have not heard from him as the backlash grows by the day. there's been talk of a player boycott led by lebron james if sterling is still the owner when the new season starts in the fall. in a few moments, we'll hear from roger mason, jr., the national president of the national basketball player's association. he'll try to set the record straight on what the players are planning to do. sterling has been banned for life, fined $2.5 million for
8:01 pm
racist comments he made and there is another new recording that just come out where a person believed to be sterling is talking about his relationship with v. stiviano. the story begins to gain momentum because of the interviews that aired on this program over the past two nights with sterling and then, of course with, magic johnson. throughout the hour, you'll hear parts of the interview donald sterling that you never heard before, including his thoughts on his estranged wife shelly, whether they're going to get divorce and what he thinks about race nix general in this country. i want to get you caught up in the debate that has ignited. magic johnson's response for donald sterling is praised with taking the high road. >> i was expecting at least an apology. and the american public wanted an apology. he final dli that. but this is -- it's sad. when i saw that interview, it's sad. i hope donald can see the mistake that he has made and also the people he has hurt along the way. >> johnson spoke after sterling
8:02 pm
publicly attacked him in his one and only interview on monday night. >> this attack on magic is crazy. he's messing with the wrong person. and magic is loved by everybody around the world. >> sterling was apologizing for his racist remarks but ended up make things worse for himself with this attack. >> what kind of a guy goes to every city and has sex with every girl and then catches hiv and is that someone we want to respect and tell our kids about? i think he should be ashamed of himself. i think he should go into the background. but what does he do for the black people? he doesn't do anything. >> reaction was swift. nba commissioner adam silver quickly issued a statement which said, i just read a transcript of donald sterling's interview and while magic johnson doesn't need me to, i feel compelled to apologize to him and he continues to be dragged into this situation and be degraded
8:03 pm
by such a malicious and personal attack. the nba, board of governors is continuing with the process to remove mr. sterling. former president bill clinton called johnson after the interview and johnson tweeted out his thanks to the president for his support. nba players also showed their support for johnson, sterling's remarks were the final straw. >> the biggest shock waves from players that i talked to today, they said wait a minute. he insulted magic johnson again? he did that again? and they can't believe that. >> it wasn't only sterling's attack on mablg magic johnson. >> i contend they love me. >> you think they still love you? >> i do. >> you think the players of the los angeles clippers love you? >> absolutely. >> clippers star chris paul called sterling's remarks "unfortunate." >> yeah. i don't know about all that. you know what i mean? we're here. we're focused. i love my wife and my kids and my family and my teammates.
8:04 pm
but, yeah. >> coach doc rivers said while he wasn't expecting anything from sterling, he didn't think it was much of an apology. >> right now i'm focused on our guys and above all that, you know, that's fine. he's going to keep doing what he does. we have to keep doing our jobs though. >> how the sterling interview might affect his status as the clippers owner remains to be seen. it is part of that conversation. yesterday evening the nba issued a statement that read in part, "the advisory finance committee met again this afternoon via conference call. the committee discussed the recent media appearanced by donald sterling and reviewed the status of the charge for termination of the clippers onnership. the committee will reconvene next week." one of the many things that struck me is how he seemed to really believe the clippers love him or at least claim that, that the other owners support him and somehow he is going to maintain ownership of the team despite all that's happened. here we speak about that in a portion of the interview that has not aired until tonight. >> you believe you will be able to keep the team though?
8:05 pm
>> well -- >> the advertisers certainly, you know -- >> the advertisers are all coming back. let's not be crazy. the fans all come. if you have a good team. if you don't have a good team. >> even if you're owner? >> what am i, frankenstein? am i an oeger? i'm a good person. i'm a warm person. i say hello to everybody that comes to the team. >> there are some players that talked about a boycott of the season. >> that's talk. the media pushes that. why would they do that if they get their salaries? they're going to play. i mean one day they all love you and the next day you make a mistake and say something and suddenly they hate you? is that the way it is? what if a player said i don't like working for that jew? what would we do? i wouldn't do anything. i would ask him why? why? i want to make you happy.
8:06 pm
if you want more money, you know, more attention, more love. >> but you're not allowed to have any business dealings regarding the team. >> well, maybe one day i will. maybe that will happen. >> what is the path to that? >> i don't know. i guess i have to ask them to look into it. and maybe give me a chance. give me another chance. >> do you think sponsors will come back if you were owner of the team. >> they lot of players. everybody loves the players. >> they started dropping off. the sponsors started dropping off. >> i don't believe that. >> well, it happened. >> i really work with sponsors when i'm in the organization. those sponsors, they love the players. and they love the nba. and they will come back. but you have to kiss them a little bit and treat them with
8:07 pm
dignity. the sponsors have every right to be upset. they're trying to sell a product. and i just destroyed everything. >> so why not for the good then of the team, for the good of your ex-wife who is still could own 50% of the team, your daughter -- your family members who are still part owners of the team. why not walk away from it? you make a ton of money from what you bought the team for. >> remember we said money is not what i'm interested in. >> so why not walk away? >> i want to show all the people that are associated with basketball and the world i'm not a racist. when you ask me what i have in terms of rights, i think of the league. the league would give you everything if you're a good member. but if you're not a good member, i don't think they want to give
8:08 pm
you anything. i got to maybe somehow make them believe i'm a good member that made a mistake and i'm apologizing and i'm asking for forgiveness. am i entitled to one mistake? after 35 years? i mean i love my league. i love my team. it's a terrible mistake. and i'll never do it again. >> do you think the punishment that the nba handed down, the 2.amillion fine, not having any business dealings, not being tibl go to the stadium. is that fair or unfair? >> well, i think it's a little bit harsh, you know? >> what is harsh? >> what are the leagues supposed to do? they're in a storm. in a stupid owner has created all these problems. they have to show that they're not going to stand for that. the league won't stand for that. they won't stand for racism. i'm telling you.
8:09 pm
and i did it. so is it harsh? of course it's harsh. but it's not like i don't deserve -- i thought they were going to do more. >> what did you think they were going to do? >> i -- i -- i don't know. i just thought that -- i'm embarrassed i would cause so much grief. >> you say it's a little harsh. is it fair? >> i don't know if it's fair. maybe it's fair. for all the aggravation, embarrassment and humiliation i caused and maybe it's fair. >> well, fair or not, the nba is in the process of forcing sterling to sell the team. the details are still being worked out. it doesn't seem like it's going to be a quick process. there have been conflicting reports today about a player boycott led by lebron james if sterling is still at the helm when the new season starts in
8:10 pm
the fall. roger mason jr. is the vice president of the national basketball players association. he joins me. >> i want to clear up a confusion. there is an interview you gif show time and you spoke to lebron james about what he would do if donald sterling was still the owner of the clippers at the start of the next season. you said he told you he wouldn't play if that were the case and now you're saying he didn't actually tell that you. so what exactly did he say? >> i was using lebron an example as i talk about many of our players in our league. we're unified and united and we want to do what's right. so i think lebron was saying what many of our players have said and there's no place for sterling as an owner. at no point did he specifically say he was going to boycott. i think he said as players, we're going to stand for what is right. >> you have heard other players talk about a boycott? do you think that's a real threat? >> i have heard other players talk about not wanting to play.
8:11 pm
this notion of a boycott is a little bit overdramatized. at the end of the day, we're very pleased with commissioner silver and his stance has been and what his punishment was and the process. >> i talked to donald sterling who seems to be of the belief that his players on the clippers still love him. that's actually what he said to me. he believes even if he stayed as owner, they would continue to play. the sponsors would come back. that there is a path for him to retain ownership. i want to play a little bit more of what he said and then ask you about it. >> there are some players that talked about a boycott of the season. >> that's talk. the media pushes that. why would they do that if they get their salaries? they're going to play. i mean one day they all love you and the next day you make a mistake and say something and they hate you? is that way it is? what if a player said i don't like working for that jew?
8:12 pm
what would we do? i wouldn't do anything. i would ask him why? why? i want to make you happy. if you want more money, what -- you know, more attention, more love. >> is donald sterling underestimating how much at least his players want him out of the league? >> well, you can't speak for people. and so, you know, the clippers, they're trying to win play-off games. what i will say is us as players, we forgive the man. so we don't hold a grudge. but at the same time, you got to do what is right. there is no place in our society. there is no place in our game for racists. >> i heard from people who cover the nba who say that players are becoming more frustrated with the fact that owners vote on whether or not to remove donald sterling. it hasn't happened yet. have you heard that frustration? >> there is going to be frustration with everything. we understand that there is a process that has to happen. and so, you know, we've been very pleased like i mentioned with commissioner silver and how
8:13 pm
fast and quickly he made a ruling on this. and now it's up to the owners to vote. i saw yesterday with your interview with magic, he's expecting the owners to do the same thing. so we're sitting back and waiting on the league and while they're mr. may be a little frustration, we understand there is a process. >> do you see this ending up with a long legal bat snl he is not saying, if he is removed but he's hinting that he might. >> yeah. well, you never know. and so he's got a history of being in many litigations and so there is always that possibility. we're just going to have to wait and see. >> have you heard from players how they feel about shelly sterling maintaining some form of ownership? >> yeah. you know, as you mentioned, i have a responsibility as a union leader to speak for the players. and many of our guys feel like sterling's overall that ownership is no longer welcomed. i think that's the tone that
8:14 pm
commissioner silver has laid out there and we share his sentiment. >> roger mason jr., appreciate you being on. thanks so much. >> no problem. >> quick reminder, set your dvr so you can watch 360 whenever you want. donald sterling repeatedly said he's not a racist. but what you does he by this racism in general? does he believe it exists in the united states? that part of the interview is next. >> do you think racism is a problem in america? >> i don't think so. i think it's better than anywhere else in the world. >> also ahead, sterling's thoughts on the man who sued him, he will john baylor who said he has no doubt that sterling is a racist.

attorney. mark, let me start off with you. his views on race, his views on adultery. obviously we'll get to that. but just in terms of the ownership of the team. how do you see this playing out? >> well, i think exactly what he said is exactly, believe it or not, what sonny and i have been saying all along. i think the league is going to force him out and i think she's going to retain an interest. she will not be in control. i think the way this is going to play out is that they will find an ownership group that will be the controlling interest. she's going to retain a passive interest. and i think that they're going to move on. i think you'll find a ownership group that is diverse and is anchored in los angeles and that's going to be the end of that. i just do not see in any way, shape or form how they're ever going to be able to force her out in this case absent some kind of tape that gets leaked of her saying similar things to what donald is saying.
8:34 pm
>> sonny, do you agree with that? >> i find myself agreeing with mark geragos these days. it's shocking to me. i think that's right. i think she's on pretty strong legal footing here. unless there are some agreement that's we haven't seen, perhaps the family trust looks a certain way. perhaps there's a franchise agreement that looks a certain way? so i think there are some factors that are still missing. but from what we know, it seems to me that it's going to be very difficult to force her out. >> even though a lot of the players say, look, all the sterlings have to go. it has to be a clean slate. >> well, i understand that. but remember what the people are positioning themselves w the nba after she came out and said she wanted to remain as an owner, didn't do anything, and then adam silver was quoted the nba constitution. well, you know, that's great mr. silver. but the problem is that we have a u.s. constitution and it protects people's property interests and things of that

nature. the players are i a similar situation. the players have contracts. you know, they're admirable for taking a stand and i think if i were advising them i would advise them to take a stand. however, i'm not going to advise them. i don't think they're 5% and 10% crowd is going to advise them to violate their contracts and get sued and anything else. that having been said, i don't think if this is handled correctly by the nba, and i think that will be, if they neutralize her, if they put her if a position where she retains an interest but has really no voice, meaning there is a controlling interest, and if that controlling interest is what i -- who and what i believe it's going to be, i don't think the players will care. i think the players will embrace the next it rags of the clippers which is going to be a diverse ownership group which is firmly rooted in los angeles. >> she's been at the games. doc rivers made it very clear they seem to have a good relationship. adam silver i think in a misstep said this punishment only

8:38 pm
that's not true. the nba can't forget him. he has to be made an example of at this point. >> you no he what is so funny about what sonny says, too. when we were doing the trayvon martin stuff, i used to say frequently -- >> here you go. >> i used to say frequently, it doesn't surprise me because you hear people talking like this. i hear people talking like this all the time. and when sonny says nuance racism, i'm not jumping your backside on this, sonny. i agree with you. there is a nuance racism. this is something that i hear all the time. it's not something that is shocking. it exists in america. >> mark geragos just agreed with me. we should save the tape on that. >> sonny, good to you have on. mark, you as well. in a new leak of donald sterling talking to a friend although i don't know what kind of friend records you and then sells the tape, but he slams v. stiviano calling her a monster.

there is a new audio recording that gives words to what he says in private and when he's not on camera and specifically the ones we said when he spoke. while we can't confirm the voice, it especially sounds like him and he's not denying it's him on the tape. when i sat with sterling, he had kind words to say about v. he sounded more hurt. that's when the cameras are rolling. it's not always been said about her on tape. >> could this be donald sterling on tape again? this time turning the table on his mistress whose original recording got sterling in hot water. a man sounding like the l.a. clippers owner tells someone, reportedly his long time friend, that v. is the racist. listen. >> she said i will never go out
8:44 pm
with a black guy. do you know what it is to wake up every morning and wish you were white? she tried so hard to make her skin white. >> it's a far different tone from sterling's conversation earlier this week. where in tears he admitted that he made the racist comments. no mention of stiviano's beliefs. >> everybody wants to be cared for. i made such a mistake. i thought that woman really cared for me. i'm the guilty one for uttering the terrible, ugly words that i don't mean. >> and when anderson asked him about this about stiviano? >> do you think she was trying to get money from you in any way? >> she is a good person. she is a beautiful person. >> now listen to what he told his friend about how stiviano treats her family. >> the family is fabulous,
8:45 pm
fabulous. honest as the day long. poor, you know, and she treats them with a whip. i mean she just orders them around. puts them in a room. she's mean. mean, mean. she is a monster. they call her the monster. >> monster or not, when anderson asked sterling about his relationship with stiviano, he clammed up. >> i really don't want to talk about her. >> but he had plenty to say about her and the couple's sex life to his friend on the phone. sharing this story about how he met stiviano at the super bowl claiming she came to see him two months later. >> she said can we go and talk in private i want to be your friend. i said i don't need any friends. and she says, yeah, you need me. so she takes me into a room and she does her thing. and then she -- she says do you want to go for a walk? and i go, okay. >> he says the relationship
8:46 pm
continued. >> this chick is something else. she was a -- an animal. >> sterling also talked to his friend about magic johnson. >> i respect him. i like him. in fact, he's black means nothing. >> he likes him? you might not have guessed that from how he talked about him to anderson. >> he made love to every girl in every city in america and he had aids and he's got aids. did he do any business? i'd like -- did he help anybody in south l.a.? >> i think he has hiv. >> is that someone we want to respect and tell our kids about? i think he should be ashamed of himself. >> what does stiviano's lawyer say about this? >> we got a statement. it's nonsense. they say she's extremely proud of her heritage and her background despite all that has happened. she still cares very deeply for donald. >> did anything else surprise from you the new recordings? >> it's sort of like the tale of
8:47 pm
two donalds. you spoke to him and he was forthcoming about some things. but then he wouldn't talk much about magic johnson to this friend of his on the phone. one thing that really struck me is when you asked him about whether or not v had tried to extort money from him or asked him for money and he sort of danced around the question. he didn't want to talk about it. but with his friend on the phone, he said this. he said, sterling told him i'm going to take you down. so that's what a lot more forthcoming about that than what he said. i guess it just depends on what donald you get that day. >> who knows what is real and not. appreciate it. just ahead, imagine seeing this from your car. take a look. >> oh, my god! oh, my gosh! >> flames of one of five wildfires in and around san diego. there are a lot of evacuations. we'll have breaking news on that. plus an outrage in turkey after the deadliest mining disaster that the country faced. 274 are dead. dozens missing. i have bayer a.

base and the lego land amusement park. a dangerous line for those on the front lines. we're in carlsbad, california. thousands of people told to evacuate there. firefighters having a tough time, i understand. what is the latest? >> well, here, anderson this neighborhood completely evacuated. you see the fire enk rinz starting to pull out of here. they need to shift resources. if you can look over my left shoulder, you see on the hills another fire. that one in san marcos. so in all, five fires burning. they say 20 buildings damaged and more than 23,000 people evacuated all because of the fires that were pushed along by strong winds. very high temperatures and humidity below 10%, anderson. >> this is early in the season. this has got to be because the drought along with the winds, right? >> absolutely. i was talking to federal fire officials today. they say california, they are
8:53 pm
very concerned about almost all of california. almost all of oregon and parts of nevada. these winds playing a huge factor in all of this. they died down a little bit. but when they were whipping earlier, the fires were hop scotching all over the place. you pointed out closing schools, legoland, evacuating entire neighborhoods, causing interstate 5 to be closed down. the winds really reeked havoc. this is supposed to be a july or august phenomenon. >> anything going to change with the winds with, the heat to give the firefighters a break in fighting this thing? >> it might be small but it might be enough, they say we're going to see the temperatures drop about five degrees tomorrow. they reached to 100 today. they say the winds are supposed to die down. that should give them enough of a break. about it right over my left shoulder, a fire coming up over the ridge. they have their hands full. they did a very good job defending the houses.
8:54 pm
we say 20 buildings durnd down, they took some dramatic steps and make some great stands today, anderson. >> thanks. let's take a look at the live pictures. they're really just incredible here. i mean you really get a sense of you see how fast the wind is moving the smoke off these flames and obviously taking embers and just blowing the embers. sometimes they can go for great distances, settling down and start up a new fire there. that is some of the difficulty that obviously we're looking at there as we pull out of that. we'll be continuing to follow this all throughout the evening and obviously they're going to be battling the flames all through the night. next, the ray against time to save dozens of miners still trapped underground after a deadly explosion. this is for real this time. step seven point two one two. verify and lock. command is locked. five seconds. three, two, one.
