with valorie jared among other top aids. newsroom with don lemon starts right now. good afternoon, everyone. top of the hour. don lemon in for brook today. a private conversation with donald sterling's girlfriend got him into this mess. now it looks like the nba owner is going to have to go to his wife to clean this mess up. shelly sterling is in talks with the nba to sell the los angeles clippers. she is esstranged from her husband. he has been under pressure to sell his team after recordings came to light nearly a month ago in which donald sterling told his girlfriend not to bring black people to the game. i'm going to turn to stephanie in los angeles.
11:01 am
what does this leave room for? a quick resolution here? >> obviously that's what a lot of people involved with this would like to see. the players, the nba association would like to see this as well. people trying to figure out what her stance is going to be on this. she has been married to donald for 50 some years. it has changed in recent weeks. she was previously sitting court side and now she has been up in the box. she said she wanted to stay but now this may make room that perhaps she will sell it.
11:02 am
>> she has said that she wanted to keep the team. she cares about the players very much. remember when it first broke and she said she called or actually doc rivers said that he had gotten a call asking if she could come to the game and being respectful. that was early on what does need to be figured out is since this team is owned by the family trust, how will that all be broken down. and if they get divorced in california, 50% of what's his is hers and 50% of what's her's is his. >> we will be getting back to you throughout the afternoon. this move to defer to his wife may not be a surprise to those who heard sterling speak exclusively on camera to anderson cooper.
11:03 am
listen. >> she has worked with me for 58 years, my wife. one wife, 58 years. and she loved the team. and always helped me with everything. if for some reason i can't have the team, i think she should have her interest, she didn't do anything. i brought all of this on her, the poor girl. i don't know how she can live and deal with this. thank god she has wonderful attorneys who will protect her. >> there is certainly a lot oto discuss right here. >> cnn legal analyst, sonny hoffman. i want to talk about all of this. this is just in from the nba. surrendering control of ownership to the la clippers. we continue to follow the
11:04 am
process set forth in the nba constitution regarding termination of the current ownership interest in the los angeles clippers and are proceeding towards a hearing on this matter on june 3. does this matter that he is giving control to shelly sterling? >> i think it does matter. we are in this weird place. i have spoken to many sports attorneys who say we are in a weird place. of course it matters that donald sterling is not the owner. i think it is being reported that he has transferred his ownership to shelly sterling who i have always said is the wild card here. >> the nba is saying it doesn't matter. >> sterling is saying that the team is going to be sold. that's the important thing.
11:05 am
they don't want it to be a phoney ownership. so this is huge. donald sterling is out of the nba. >> hold on. >> and that's a big deal. the nba has already spoken on this. donald sterling is the controlling owner. she may have a beneficiary ownership. >> as the -- he is not allowed under the contract to transfer the ownership without approval of the nba. >> that's what the players care about. >> hold on. both of you are talking at the same time. >> mel finish. >> i was just going to say -- >> finish your thought, mel. >> the legal mumbo jumbo. sterling has conceded that the team will be sold. that his wife is going to sell the team as soon as possible.
11:06 am
that's great news. i think that's the news that everyone was hoping for. it's the best case scenario not to have to deal with this guy fighting it legally or arguing that the wife should get to keep the team. i think this is a great scenario. >> okay. hang on. why transfer ownership? when the league is looking at a controlling owner, listen, the nba still has to accept that they have not accepted it. when i heard this news, i doubted that the nba was going to accept it all along. what if she says i am now the controlling owner of the clippers. and all of the sudden she says i don't want to sell it. he doesn't own it any more. >> that's a problem. >> yes. go ahead. >> they are still going to push her to sell the team. there is no question. it has got to be out of the sterling family. she has to sell the team. the nba owners will be just as aggressive to force her.
11:07 am
this doesn't count in my estimation, as him selling the team to satisfy the other nba owners and the players. this is only an opportunity for him to divest himself. she is also going to have to sell this team. >> don, i have said this from the very beginning. wait a minute, mel. we have said this from the very beginning. i think one of the mistakes donald sterling is allegedly not involved and now if you're the nba you can say i'm going to continue my process but the bottom line is -- >> they can still force it. >> it's not part of it any more. >> the owners have the ability to still force it under the same principles. all they have to do is take the vote and they can force her to sell it.
11:08 am
so, i view this as a positive development. >> i have the transcript here. he said i understand the position of mrs. sterling's owner is in essence that she still owns the team. if the owners ultimately decide and him doing something. >> of course it has bearing. >> and we will see it in court. >> two-thirds ownership. and here's the other thing, don, i think -- >> she is going have to sell the team. >> he also said on tuesday that they still own the team and that it's their team to sell. and that he would love to see
11:09 am
them sell it instead of going through this process. >> okay. drew, last word. >> don, i will make it easy for you. i will make it easy for you. she owns the team. fine, that doesn't solve the problem. it's a step in the right direction. she's going to have to sell. adam silver and the owners will force her to sell this team and she will. >> we'll see. >> we are moving in the right direction. she will have to sell. >> i wish you guys were a little bit more passionate about this. you seem really calm and understated today. i will have you stick around. we will chat about who might buy the clippers and at what price. from oprah to magic johnson, who is going buy. plus a woman escapes her alleged kidnappers and another one who survived her own nightmare has a message. >> you have absolutely no clue what she went through to say things and say that she was lying or she's doing this.

chris hansen, floyd mayweather. >> it's going to come down to money. the nba and sterling and company, they're going to want an ownership with the best deal, the best money. is there conflict right now with magic johnson, maybe. but if he offers the best deal he's going to get the team. i'm going to say on the record, the new owner is the one who makes the best offer. >> okay. wow. you're really going out on a
11:15 am
limb there, drew. so it's get in line. so what's the first process? do you have to put in a bid? >> yeah. i mean, the way it works basically is the people that want to buy the team will reach out to the nba and the sterlings. there will be negotiations. there are independent negotiations between the sides and it moves rather quickly. there is going to be very serious players when you talk about buying the los angeles clippers. you have got to come to the table. >> how much is it going to go for, do you think? >> everyone is saying about a billion dollars. >> i agree. >> over 300 consequences. there is a possibility that she sells part of the ownership but perhaps retains a passive ownership, thus alleviating a
11:16 am
huge tax situation. >> a billion dollars? >> if you just use common sense and you have multiple people bidding. i think the reason the sterlings are doing this is they know they will get a far better price if they sell it quickly and if people have to deal with shelly and not donald. i think we will see something far north of a billion dollars. the way this will go down is when they have the deal it has to get approved by the nba. shelly can try to hold on to a small interest but she -- that deal may not get approved. the nba has to approve whatever transaction and they have to anoint the new owner and the new owner signs a franchise and ownership agreement and signs that constitution, don. so it's not a done deal.
11:17 am
>> by the way, it's a very attractive franchise. it's in the second largest market. they happen to be a great team. it's going to be a sexy transaction. >> yeah. >> you know, look, it's going to be a record breaking deal in my estimation. >> can i say that my vote is for oprah? for me she is the or caacle and would love to see oprah winfrey own this. >> i look forward to them focusing on basketball. everyone thinks north of a billion. raise your hand if you think north of a billion. >> i'm not sure. >> sonny's always a hold out.
11:18 am
>> i think it's going to help. when you add an owner, perhaps like oprah that helps the value, too. >> i have got to run. have a great memorial weekend. i'm already ready for the yacht. >> looking good. >> thanks. coming up, another nba owner calling himself prejudice and says everyone is bigoted. mark cuban not only standing by his comments but we're going to show you the video that you haven't seen. plus this, a contentious race gets down right nasty after a photo of the incumbent's wife is posted online. dirty politics.

the los angeles clippers but some candid comments really causing an uproar now. during an interview, dallas mavericks owner mark cuban talked about his own bigotry and says that everyone is bigoted and says everyone has prejudices in one way or another. but some say his reference to a black teenager in a hoodie caused an uproar. he apologized by stood by the context. he tweeted a link to a second interview he gave, one he calls an interview on race that you probably haven't seen.

11:32 am
disagree. >> you said it was ridiculous. i don't think the push back is ridiculous. >> of course you can push back, but i think the controversy is ridiculous because you can't have it both days. we have to quiet that and have the patience and vision when this is an opening for discourse and i think that he has given us an opening for discourse. he was honest and willing to make mistakes and i think that is really critical in moving this ball down the court.
11:33 am
>> i had to go on twitter and a apologize because he apologized. we're still so raw and in so much pain about treyvon martin, that when we heard the hoodie reference, there are no scabs on our wounds. >> the hoodie thing and i was one of the first journalists to bring the treyvon martin to a national stage, one of. everyone feels terribly for them. but every time someone mentions a conversation like a hoodie, is it always treyvon? >> when you say a black boy in a hoodie, this was so painful and so real, so very much like it, that is the icon ography. it is around pain and racism. i think we need to expand our narratives outside of the stereo types that we have been given
11:34 am
beyond the hoodie. it hurts too much right now. >> point taken. too soon. so when originally he said i'm a little bit worried about the slippery slope of taking someone's team away. then he got new information and changed his mind. then when you talk about the iconography, he didn't realize it in the initial comments and then realized it and apologized. that's a mature adult. >> that's how we evolve. i think you have to learn and grow and be willing to recover. there's a madness in racism and bigotry. he made a distinction between bigotry, racism and prejudice. what we saw was racist, not just bigotry and biased. >> donald sterling was saying i'm not racist. >> that's adding insult to

helpful thing that we can do. we have to stop being coward about what we have been taught so that we can grow. >> i really don't think bigoted, either. >> he called himself a bigot. there you go. he was showing that we have biases and prejudices. >> i thought we were going to disagree. >> no. we can -- on the women thing? yes. >> that was another -- you didn't get what i was saying. >> but you have a feminist. are you crazy? >> i'm not crazy. i was making their point. here is what i was saying. when you're in this business, this business is about television business, we were talking about joe abramson being fired at the new york times and equal pay. i don't believe that equal pay in every circumstance, i think experience counts. part of it is about looks. if a let's just say someone with
