we got an up-close look at the drone program israel uses to get details of potential targets. this is what an israeli drone sees over gaza. cnn got special access to this highly secure israeli air force base, home to the drone program. i spoke with lieutenant orr, whose face and last name we're not allowed to show. >> how do you do that? >> we see the picture live. we are searching for civilians and any casualty. >> before israeli jet fighters actually goes out there and launches missiles, you have to clear it. is that right? >> that's right. the. >> the israeli defense forces gave this to cnn and say they

spare civilian lives. it's called off at the last minute. >> we reach a target. as we get closer, we saw people walking around the main street. we immediately stopped the attack. >> his message was relayed to the israeli air force whose f-16 was ready to fight. >> before we release the bombs, we send someone in the commu communications and cancelled the bombing. >> still palestinians are dying and the death toll is over 200. the military says it has targeted over 1,800 sites in gaza. >> it's not a perfect business, as you know. there are a lot of civilians that have been killed. >> as i said, every death of any civilians from every side, it's tragedy. >> when there are mistakes, do you feel guilty? >> sometimes, yes, i take it

personally. >> we're going to continue to follow this story. we'll see e in the next few hours whether or not this temporary cease fire that the united nations has proposed shs the israelis say they have acce accepted. hamas says they need more information. we'll see if it gets off the ground. if there's quiet during those six hours, we'll see if it can be expanded and maybe that fighting will stop. let's only hope it does. there's other news we're following especially back in washington. important political developments including a top house republican who says he has proof of former obama cabinet member broke the law. barring political activity on the job, our chief congressional correspondent dana bash has details. >> as chairman of the committee, it is republican daryl oois is a's job to hold the white house accountable, but he's someone aware of how to make headlines. that's what he did today.

house gop chair has a smoking gun and unveiled it during a hearing in a dramatic fashion. >> just calling you off the record here. >> audio of a 2012 voice mail message is the voice of labor secretary hilda sa lease asking an employee to contribute money and to recruit others to attend a fundraiser organizing for america. >> wanting to ask you if you could help us get folks organized to come to a fundraiser that we're doing for organizing for america for obama campaign on friday. there's a lot of folks coming, but wanted to ask you if you might help contribute or get other folks to help out. >> it was organized she broke the law, which restricts political activities like soliciting donations. the top democrat was quickly to jump for what he called a stunt skblp it's time for the

committee to serve as a center stage for political theater and for fellow responsibilities under the constitution to conduct responsible oversight. >> reporter: a republican source tells cnn the voice message was left in march of 2012 as the president was gearing up for reelection. the u.s. office's special council which enforces the hatch act received a complaint and opened an investigation but reached no conclusion. the white house won't comment on the audio saying it's an ongoing investigation. >> this is a law enforcement vgs that was first reported back in january of this year. we weren't in a position to comment on that law enforcement investigation at that point and i'm not at a position to comment today. >> reporter: it's unclear what that investigation is because under federal law the stiffest penalty for violating the hatch act is dismissal and she left the obama cabinet after the president's first term. wolf? >> dana bash from capitol hill,

thanks very much. that's it for me. thanks for watching. live tonight from jerusalem. for the united states, "crossfire" starts right now. >> we have seen plenty of action on the republican side for 2016. now some democrats are getting into the act. >> one of the democrats is going to produce enough excitement to make it seem like the second coming of beetle mania. >> tonight on "crossfire," will it be warren versus clinton in 2016? >> we have to jump in and jump in now and make our own change. that's why i'm here. >> and will iowa roll out the welcome mat for chris christie? on the left, van jones. on the right, s.e.cupp. in the "crossfire," a former presidential candidate and tim

pawlenty. who has what it takes to win the white house? plus the outrage of the day. tonight on "crossfire." welcome to "crossfire." i'm s.e. cupp. >> and i'm van jones. this is an exciting time to be a democrat. i was especially happy to see the crowd going wild today for my friend senator elizabeth warren. she was talking about an issue that is near and dear to my heart, income inequality. check her out. >> washington is a rigged game. washington is a place that works for those that have the money to hire armies of lobbyists and lawyers, but for everybody else, for regular people, for regular families, washington doesn't work so well. >> that's right. amen, sister.
3:38 pm
that was straight from the heart, that's why people are going crazy for her. here's hillary clinton, who i also love, trying to make a similar point about 12 hours earlier. >> i'm worried that other people and particularly younger people are not going to have the same opportunities we did. we believed we could make our way up the ladder. now i think a lot of people don't believe that anymore. that bothers me a lot. we have to pay attention. >> it says to me you're running for president. how easily you pivoted from that into income inequality in america. >> all right, they are both talking about the same thing. i just didn't feel fire from hillary clinton. the democratic base isn't fired up? you can bet elizabeth warren is ready. >> she seemed to be indicting your boss. what's wrong? washington doesn't work. >> you got me. >> sorry, obama.
3:39 pm
in the "crossfire," former governor bill richardson, who ran for the 2008 democratic presidential nomination. and former minnesota governor tim pawlenty who ran for the 2012 republican nomination. governor richardson, i think elizabeth warren proves, i have been saying for awhile now her problem is going to be she doesn't speak progressive and she doesn't speak millennial. are you concerned hillary clinton might be able to connect if she runs? >> i think she's very strong. i have seen her with democratic audiences. i have seen her latest stump speech. it's very strong. but if you're contemplating a run against her, she is a centrist. so somebody like elizabeth warren could beat her, but could mount a very strong campaign on this income inequality issue and especially in the early primaries. tim and i know, iowa with the
3:40 pm
democrats is far, far progressive. new hampshire is far progressive. but you get into the primaries in the west, texas, the south, i think that's where somebody like hillary clinton would be very strong. >> you have progressives coming together at net roots nation from across the country. it's going to be beetle mania for elizabeth warren. look at this t-shirt. there's going to be a thousand of these. would you wear one of these? i'm from the elizabeth warren wing. >> no. i have had differences with secretary clinton because i endorsed obama. you guys already forgot. >> i haven't forgotten. you said i'm not in the ready for hillary camp. i have it right here. >> i'm not in the suckup camp. i do recognize that she's formidable. she's going to be perceived as
3:41 pm
the first woman president. i think she did a good job as secretary of state. >> you sound hesitant. what's your hesitation? >> my hesitation is we have political difference with her and her husband. i endorsed obama, they haven't forgiven me. so be it. >> who do you think could beat hillary clinton if not elizabeth warren? >> beetle mania? a cars reunion? but beetle mania? >> they had a lot of hits. >> i like the cars. there's a difference. >> i'm saying he's overstating it. that's the point. so hillary was spoesed to be invincible last time. she wasn't for a reason. somebody from the left outflanked her. somebody more comfortable in the way he presented information named barack obama.
3:42 pm
he up ended the invincible candidate. she came out with a book tour. looks uncomfortable. elizabeth warren setting aside some policy differences, dynamic, comfortable in terms of how she presenting. has a passion and a way to present. that is very different and more capable than hillary clinton. but she's not going to run is the problem, according to her. >> anything can happen. in some ways elizabeth warren, she isn't gunning for hillary clinton, she's gunning for you. you're associated with wall street. you have been a champion for wall street. are you concerned that somebody like her catches fire and puts you in the cross hairs? >> my group represents financial service companies all over the country. but there's an issue around income inequality. we should have a serious discussion about it. but keep in mind, things like education inequality is one of the root causes of income inequality. let's not just throw a label on it. >> push it one more thing. you are close to financial
3:43 pm
services. we would say wall street. do you think they are more in favor of a hillary clinton or elizabeth warren? would you be more for elizabeth warren or hillary clinton? >> they haven't taken sides in any of this. >> of course, they have. . hillary is giving speeches to goldman sachs. why wouldn't they want hillary clinton? >> if you took a poll, you'd probably have a split. some are republican, some are democrat. >> none would be with elizabeth warren. >> probably not many with elizabeth warren. >> while we're talking about elizabeth warren and hillary clinton, there's another democrat who is contemplating a run. that's martin o'malley. i'm more interested in the way he seems to be framing his noncampaign campaign. one reporter called it compassionate competence. i'm wondering if you think that democrats who are thig about running for president are now going to try to draw distinctions between competence
3:44 pm
and the incompetence of president obama's administration? >> look, i think what a lot of democrats are going to be doing are testing the waters. especially if secretary clinton doesn't run. vice president biden, o'malley, o'malley was a good governor. he's still a good governor. he's right, i believe, on the same-sex marriage issue, on immigration, on economic issues. he's testing the waters. and many others will test the waters, but i think the big, big question mark is will hillary clinton run? i don't think it's a question mark, i think it's 150% she will run. so she's formidable. now again, it's too early though. we should be worried as a democrat about 2014. i want to keep the senate. i'm worried about the senate. >> i think you should be. >> i think we're going to keep
3:45 pm
it, but it's going to be very narrow. we should forget this 2016 talk. >> but it's so much fun. i'm sick of talking about democrats. next we'll move on to the real winners, the republicans. first today's "crossfire" quiz. who was the last president to hail from new jersey? grover cleveland, woodrow wilson or warren harding, we'll have the answer when we get back. 2016 presidential run. yes, bridgegate set him back but as scandals go, the guy occupying the white house has him beat 20 to one. it looks like christie has his stuff together. in the crossfire tonight governor richardson and tim pawlenty. christie is direct, relatable, he's a real person. for all the talk amongst democrats of rand paul's extremism and ted cruz's extremism, are you concerned that chris christie actually has that crossover appeal to win democrats and independents? >> i wouldn't dismiss chris christie because, again, tim and i had the experience in the early primaries the activists show up. i think that chris christie is still a viable candidate. i think this bridgegate scandal is going to hurt him because he's going to be attacked by that, but in the end, he's a

great talker but i think he's -- the whole republican party is going to have problems in a general election. the problem is they're not like governor pawlenty who is a moderate. he's going to hate me for saying that. >> he just called you the "m" word. >> let me get you on the record because you do have a different style from mr. christie. let's hear from governor christie. >> did i stay on topic? are you stupid? on topic. >> you have numnuts, get the hell off the beach. >> i don't ask you where you send your kids to school, don't bother me about where i send mine. thank you all very much. and i apologize for the idiot over there. it's people like you dividing this country. >> numnuts gets me every time. so funny! >> you know what it takes to win in the primaries. does this play in iowa in.
3:52 pm
>> i think people want a bold talker, but more importantly, look, if you're going to beat hillary clinton, elizabeth warren won't run. she'll be formidable. you need a larger than life personality, no pun intended. that's what he is. >> tough question for you. tough question for you. what is his base in the party? chris christie, as best i can tell, has a base called reporters in new york and the acela corridor. >> look at this. look at the last nominees of our party. john mccain, mitt romney. very capable people with impressive records but they didn't align completely ahead of time with the base of the party. >> but that doesn't work out very well, governor pawlenty. >> but they got the nomination. >> but it didn't work out in the end. >> in the end, the tea party still controls your party. and the tea party is going to be
3:53 pm
anathema. this issue of affordable care act is starting to work in the right direction. but again, i just think that -- >> wait a second. >> why do you say that? >> we're going to have to have somebody -- you're nice to say that. >> why don't you say something nice about me? >> answer the question. >> you're going to need somebody to win the election and be the nominee that can straddle both parts of the party, the establishment wing and not so much the tea party but the libertarian wing, rand paul. >> who does that? >> you need someone like scott walker and marco rubio, but someone who can have one foot in both camps because if they're just libertarian or just establishment. >> they miss out. >> they won't cut it. >> do you think marco rubio has been count out too early?
3:54 pm
>> i think so, i won't even say he's been counted out. >> but we want you to weigh in on the fireback question. could elizabeth warren beat hillary clinton if a democratic primary? tweet yes or no using # crossfire. your site gave me this "credit report card" thing. i need my actual credit report. primary right now? 52% of you say yes, 48% of you say no. >> uh-oh. >> what do you think about them apples? >> i think they're wrong. i think hillary would win, but her biggest enemy, hillary, would be the inevitability factor. i hope she has some opposition. i can't be a coronation. >> she can lose. hillary clinton could lose in. >> i doubt it. but anything can happen in politics, but i think she's got a steamroller going. >> tell me why you aren't sitting here saying hillary clinton is going to win. what is your reservation? what could take her down? not just inevitability, just a combination that could stop her? >> like i said, if it appears that it's a free ride, that there's no competition, that she takes it for granted. >> we'll say thanks to bill richardson and tim pawlenty. not only does the debate continue online including facebook and twitter, you can check out my outrage. from the right, i'm s.e. cupp.
