11:01 pm
>> after days of protests from leaders around the world, there appears to be some cooperate from ukrainian separatists in the recovery of malaysia airlines flight 17. >> yeah, for families this is a long-time coming, this moment. at this moment, a train bearing the bodies of 282 victims is making its way from donetsk to kharkiv. from there, they will be flown to amsterdam, which is where the flight originated. the separatists were reluctant to turn over the bodies. >> the airplane's black box recorder is now in the hands of malaysia officials. a top rebel leader says he believes the flight data and voice recorders will reveal the truth about what happened to the airliner and reiterated his claim that separatists did not shoot down the flight. >> meantime, the u.n. security council unanimously passed a
11:02 pm
resolution condemning the shootdown and demanded full access to the crash site. the resolution called for the complete cooperation of all countries. but the measure did not place blame. >> and a news conference a short time ago, australian prime minister tony abbott said he was encouraged by the recent signs of cooperation and also talked about dismay about what he said is the tampering of the crash site. >> after the crime comes the coverup. what we have seen is tampering and obviously that has to stop. >> we want to bring you the latest developments now in the investigation. our senior international correspondent ivan watson is joining us from eastern ukraine. ivan, bring us up to speed about the bodies. they should arrive at the destination in the next few hours. also, tell us where these black

boxes are located now. >> well, errol, the dutch foreign ministry telling cnn that the train carrying the cargo of more than 200 bodies of flight mh-17 victims is currently here in this separatist-held city of donetsk, that it has been delayed. no reasons given exactly for why and that its arrival in the ukrainian government-held city of kharkiv probably won't happen for another 16 hours. again, we don't know why that has been delayed. the train would theoretically have to cross front lines from rebel-held territory to ukrainian-held territory and these are active front lines where fighting continues to this day. in the meantime, there was a very late night hand-over ceremony where the leader of the separatists here in donetsk
11:04 pm
handed over two flight recorders to a delegation. he also, once again, defended the separatists saying that they did not have the technology nor the means or motive to shoot down a commercial airliner. a surprising thing to see was that on those orange books it is clearly marked flight recorder. and for several days that same self-declared prime minister was saying that he had technical objects but not the expertise to confirm whether or not they were the flight recorders or black boxes. that's clearly marked on the side of these orange devices which may raise some more questions about credibility from the side of the separatists leadership. errol? >> and there have been so many questions about this about the credibility of the separatists. you mentioned a 16-hour delay in the transportation of the victims' remains and you made

the point that it will have to cross the front line. we should under score that this took place in a war zone, that pro-russian separatists shot down ukrainian aircraft previously. bring us up to speed on the status of that. how much of an opportunity, in the morning here, the shelling continued overnight and it is apparent that there is artillery being fired. and people here in donetsk don't seem to be talking very much about flight mh 17 right now. they are worried about trying to escape these bombings. >> the separatist controlled

hospital was the target and accused hamas of putting civilians near the line of fire. >> 583 palestinians have been killed in the conflict. most of them civilians. 27 israeli soldiers and two israeli civilians have died. cnn's martin savidge is joining us live from jerusalem. the objective of the mission is to destroy the tunnels and stop the rockets from coming in from gaza. but is there any indication how long this operation will last given the death toll continues to rise? >> well it does indicate if the goal is to destroy all of the tunnels it's going to take some time merely by the fact they are so numerous according to the israelis and so well
11:10 pm
constructed. much has been made of the threat that israel faces from rockets there have been 2,000 launched. but the tunnels too are being used as a kind of weapon of terror. >> the same thing that has challenged and slowed israeli soldiers in gaza is now spilling out of gaza into israel, tunnels. two terror squads of hamas militants used tunnels to infiltrate into israel. possibly intending to launch an attack on civilians. this is israeli military video showing five of the fighters first crouching on the brush and firing on nearby israeli soldiers. at one point one of the men can be seen reloading. then as the israelis return fire, the militants retreat back to their tunnel when an israeli
11:11 pm
air strike hits. the incident forced area roads to close, residents to shuttler in their homes. ten hamas militants were killed and a number of israeli soldiers wounded. inside gaza, a well-organized and deeply entrenched network of tunnels has hampered israeli movement allowing militants to pop up unexpectedly before dropping back out of sight. israeli military officials refer to the underground works as lower gaza and suggest that some of the war is being waged underground. so far israel has discovered 14 tunnels each with multiple access points. engineers work to destroy them using heavy earth moving equipment or explosives. israel believes there are more tunnels to be fount. --.
11:12 pm
>> by the way we had a briefing from the israel military and some of the fiercest fighting between hamas and israel taking place are in the area where tunnels are located. they say clearly hamas is trying to protect them. israel, as you saw, is out to destroy them. >> clearly, it doesn't seem there are any signs of any side backing down. you have secretary of state for the united states, john kerry on the ground in cairo along with u.n. secretary general ban ki-moon trying to broker a ceasefire. but the peace talks failed this year and you have this relationship between egypt and hamas going cold, how likely is it that a truce is even on the horizon? >> of course here, there is always the hope that some ceasefire can be negotiated. the israeli government will say they're all for a cease fire. the israeli military said they
11:13 pm
would go by those rules. but there have been two ceasefires during this military operation and they were violated in both cases by hamas. hamas says stopping the fighting is not good enough. there must be other benefits to the palestinian people such as opening up the border and trade with israel and other nations. >> thank you for that live report in jerusalem. we'll have much more on the situation in gaza this hour. coming up we'll speak with an israeli government spokesman on how they plan to move forward. people with loved ones aboard malaysia flight 17 are demanding answers. we'll bring you a live report from amsterdam after this. kerry will try again to broker a ceasefire between israel and hamas. >> he arrived in cairo monday night joined by united nations secretary general, ban ki-moon. he is expected to later head to jerusalem. president barack obama called for an immediate end to hostilities, and pointed to the death toll which is approaching 600 now in gaza. >> we have serious concerns about the rising number of palestinian civilian deaths and the loss of israeli lives. and that is why it now has to be our focus and the focus of the international community to bring about a ceasefire that ends the fighting and that can stop the deaths of innocent civilians, both in gaza and in israel. >> now from the very start of its military operation, israel insisted it is targeting hamas

militants and weapons and blames hamas for putting civilians in the line of fire. we want to bring in someone from our jerusalem bureau to talk about this issue. good to have you on the program once again. welcome. >> thank you for having me. >> i'm sure you are aware of the u.n. report that says 70% of the casualties in gaza are civilian. these are innocent people with the death toll approaching 600. how can you call this operation one of pinpoint accuracy? >> first of all, the u.n. itself says they are relying on numbers from the hamas-controlled government and the ministry of health. i think we have to check the numbers. i think that everyone has to independently look at them. but having said that we don't want to see a single civilian casualty in gaza, not one. but unfortunately, hamas has adopted an opposite strategy.
11:24 pm
they want to pile up the number of victim for the propaganda purposes. israel urged the local population to leave, not to get caught up in the cross fire. and hamas said no, don't leave. stay. why did hamas want to deliberately keep gaza civilians in a combat zone? what was their motivation? it's clear. they want as many civilian deaths as possible from their point of view it advances their radical agenda. >> you said it is a tactic of hamas to put civilians in the line of fire. but knowing that the u.n. is at least basing this information on people who are there, why continue to do that? in fact the u.s. secretary of state was caught in a bit of an open mic moment this weekend not on camera. just given an update of the increasing death toll which since then has continued to rise. and here's what he was caught saying. >> it's a hell of a pinpoint

operation. it's a hell of a pinpoint operation. >> the suggestion there that even the united states, while not saying it publicly, is becoming uncomfortable with the increasing civilian death toll. how do you respond to what mr. kerry was saying? >> first of all, i'm sure when we meet him we'll tell him directly. but i've been in the military. anyone who has been in the military knows that war is a terrible thing. combat is horrific. combat is organized madness in many ways. now we are making the framework of a combat situation every possible effort to keep innocent civilians out of harm's way. that is our goal. we are trying to be as surgical as possible in a difficult and complex combat environment and hamas is doing the opposite. they are not only shooting their
11:26 pm
rockets indiskrim innocently they have adopted a deliberate policy to endanger palestinian civilians. the u.n. itself a few days ago released information that hamas was storing its missiles in a u.n. school. now, what does that say? they are using a u.n. facility and a school to store their military machine and when they embed their tunnels in homes, neighborhoods, mosques, and schools. we have to take out those targets and we do so as surgically as we can, being very conscious of the need not to harm innocent gazaens. the civilian population is not our enemy. the enemy is the hamas government shooting at our people and trying to kill them and oppresses the people of gaza. i'm sure the people of gaza would have adopted the ceasefire proposed by the egyptianss that we accepted.
11:27 pm
and hamas refused. haumgs has continuously rejected the ceasefire proposals. >> the spokesman for the israeli government joining me from jerusalem thank you very much. the palestinians say there is an imbalance in this fighting. the casualties alone prove that israel's use of force is unwarranted. >> 560 palestinians killed. versus 25 israelis killed. and all these rockets did not kill anybody. i don't want any israeli or palestinian to be killed. but this must be stopped. war is not a solution. aggression is not a solution. >> that was palestinian partialment member speaking to us earlier. stay tuned to cnn as we cover this all day. we'll have more of the
