welcome back to our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm faith gnat. >> and here are our top headlines this hour. the u.n. security council held an emergency meeting on the conflict between israel and hamas a short time ago. the acting president read a statement calling for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian cease-fire in gaza. the council also said civilian facilities must be respected and protected. >> israel is saying to one was

campaign by the west against them. today, a state run news agency, you see a picture of inspectors at the crash site. their headline is, inspectors have unfettered access to the crash site and they have invited them to two border checkpoints and asked the u.s. to stop hampering the access of inspectors to these various sites. so it is the counteropposite of what you are hearing from the u.s. state department, and from the west, the position here it remains a position of denial. that there are any kind of weaponry going across the border into eastern ukraine, despite the u.s. intelligence satellite imagery, which proves that there certainly is -- are weapons going through. and i doubt that there is going to be any real change of that line in today's press

conference. the foreign ministry also described sanctions as being essentially an invitation to terrorists over the weekend saying that brussels had done what terrorists to date have not been able to do, and that is drive a wedge into the international community at a time when there is a deteriorating political situation like in syria and afghanistan. now you see this different geopolitical picture. of course, the west needs russia's assistance in dealing with, for example, nuclear negotiations with iran or in the situation in syria, providing access for assistance to go into afghanistan. and i think from those comments in the foreign ministry statement. you get a sense that russia still feels it's able to exert

leverage over the international community in that context. >> it's surprising sometimes the massive difference between the russian perspective of the crisis in ukraine and what ukrainian officials have been saying. diana live for us in moscow. we want to go now to kiev for more on this. it's a night and day difference. >> absolutely. ivan watson joining us now from kiev. if serge lavrov continues his stance of denial, no doubt kiev will have some harsh criticism of that. >> reporter: absolutely. the ukrainian government here has long made the case that the separatist region in eastern ukraine is actually a russian backed armed, funded, and trained enterprise. ukrainian officials have basically said it's an invasion. some of the top leaders of the separatist regions are russian

tunnels built by hamas. >> these tunnels are far from just holes in the ground. they are elaborate and sophisticated. >> reporter: israel considers tunnels like these such a threat that they've continued to work to destroy them even during a cease-fire. they've discovered 30 tunnels running beneath gaza into israel. finding and demolishing them has been one of the primary stated reasons for israeli troops going into gaza on the ground since hitting hem from the air wasn't effective. just how dangerous the tunnels can be is demonstrated in this video said to show hamas militants firing on idf soldiers on the israeli side of the border after emerging from two tunnels. four soldiers were killed in this attack. the militants killed by an air strike. this is another tunnel the military says hamas intended to
