>> welcome to unguarded. imagine getting a job when you are 20 and staying with the company until you are 74. that's the 54-year relationship that no torre had with baseball. he made nine all-star appearances. as a manager, he won four world series with the yankees. now he is the sports executive vice president of operations. we figured there was no better person to check in with. torre also has a personal story that touches on one of the most difficult issues with sports. domestic violence. we caulked about it in this revealing conversation.

when you managed the yankees, this was when your teams excelled. spores dynasties in general are becoming more aware and most of us have never been in the middle of one. what is it like? >> you never think about it. y the fact that it didn't come to me until i was like 56 years old and then it came every year. it was wow. you don't see that very often. >> derek jeter one of the fixtures of your time. you were at his last home game before he retired. he does the derek jeter thing. what were the first words that came out of your mouth?

>> they brought a bunch of former teammates of his. they said they will walk him. i didn't think they would. i said no, they won't. i said if buck walks in, we will suspend him and i will make sure he gets penalized. he has always been a guy who can will himself to do things like that. >> the other former player a lot of people ask you about is alex rodriguez. what was it like when he was going through such a bitter battle or the performance enhancing drugs. your former player and you had a long history with him. knowing how important the game of baseball is to him.

i'm curious about where he is next year. he will be okay. >> mentally? >> who knows. he has taken a year out of his career at a crucial time. we are all curious. >> one of the big issues in sports, you have seen the domestic violence conversation across several leagues. it's new to talk about, but not new to you. you devoted your foundation to this issue. >> when i was a kid, my mom abused my mom. he didn't like it and he threw the dishes against the wall. i was in the room because he was a new york city detective when he did go for his resolver. i was in the room for that as a 9 or 10-year-old. i never put the nervousness or

the low self esteem and i didn't go out for the high school baseball team because i didn't think i was good enough. i had feelings that i think i was born with and i went through therapy or whatever you want to call it and discovered that a lot of things that went on in my household affected my feelings. we started with the foundation. adrian person caught my attention. he was just doing something he basically learned from his dad. we all need to be made ark wear of. this stuff has been going on for years. it's an uncomfortable subject to talk about and now with the nfl, bringing it into the light that people are forced to talk about it. hopefully be more proactive and doing something about it.

moment didn't come on the court, but from a guy in a suit. giving his mvp acceptance speech. >> they put clothes on our backs and food on the table. when you didn't eat, he made sure we ate and went to sleep hungry. you are the real mvp. >> such a powerful moment. not just because it was emotional, but it was framed in kindness and gratitude, opposite in the world of sports and our culture at large these days. we wanted to tackle the bigger issue and who better to come in than kevin himself. teaching kids to be nicer in the world. a little more kind. i caught up with him earlier. i have to ask you months later. how often does someone talk to you about that speech some.

>> every day. i'm glad i was able to inspire people and give people hope. it was well-received. >> sports culture has talk about the haters and this idea of it doesn't matter if someone loves or hates me, as long as they are talking about me. how did we get here that being thought of as a good person is not as important in the world of sports as hey, people are looking at me. >> we are in the spotlight so much, it changes perspective on things. how people view you and the words we speak and the actions go such a long way with people and social media. that is blowing it out of approximate perspective. and once you look at it, you start to realize, being accountable for actions and worlds and trying to make the

world a better place. the crazy messages that athletes get, if someone doesn't like the color of a jacket you wear, can you give our viewers a taste of how far fans will go with what they write it athletes? >> it goes pretty far. i heard the most cruel things over social media and people hoping i get hurt. i heart racist remarks and everything. we live in a society where everybody loves conflict and loves hate and loves to talk people down and be positive. it's kind of -- people don't respond to it so well. >> we have been spending time with kids called strong and kind

and i never wanted to change who i was because the crowd was doing something. i wanted to be myself. being strong and kind, it was a part of me that is so authentic and want to show everybody whey believe in. >> let's talk about basketball for a minute. how does that change the landscape of cleveland? >> he's such a great player and he can change a franchise by his presence. i'm looking forward to it. >> you know as soon as lebron went home, it ramped up the talk about you possibly playing for your hometown team, the washington wizards. you are good friends. has he given you advice on how to focus and stay with the basketball. ? you know the speculation and conversation gets louder as the season goes on. >> i got two more years on my

staged a tribute to still and his 4-year-old daughter, leah who has been fighting stage 4 cancer. even the cheerleaders wore his number 75 jersey and incredibly moving. first, what was it like in that moment when you saw the tears i came running off the field and being able to look at the big screen and seeing my daughter perform with the other brave kids that are fighting cancer and being able to look over and see the cheerleaders to support the cause, it was an amazing moment. >> you posted this great video and then you posted her picture after her surgery that removed the tumor, give us the update. how is she doing now. >> pretty well. she starts her last round of chemo on friday and they gave

her a week to get rehydrated so it doesn't have a big affect on her this time around. hopefully it goes good and they are able to take away the cancer cells that spread. >> i can't imagine when you heard the news from doctors about her cancer. they gave her a 50-50 chance to survive. what was the hardest moment as you had to explain it to her or go through it as a parent? >> the hardest moment was listening to the doctor me that i only had half a chance of having my daughter in my life. it was hard on me and her mother as well and the rest of our family. as a parent you never want to hear your child has a 50% chance of living. you want to hear 100% chance. >> we heard so much wrong with the nfl, but that is pretty amazing. they ended up cutting you for

football reasons, but they resigned you so you could keep your health insurance and they donated to cancer research. >> they're have been amazing from day when i called them and told them my daughter had cancer, they allowed me to take off and spend time with my family and take care of things that were not necessarily football. when i came back, they definitely helped me with being away from my daughter while she is dealing with cancer and like you said, they started donating 100% of proceeds to cancer research. they started as an organization. >> you watched your daughter to be brave and generous and we saw her raise money to help other kids. what have you learned about your 4-year-old through all of this? >> she is strong and stronger than anybody i have known.
