>> hello. i'm deborah in for fredericka fairfield. we are following developments in the case of missing university student hannah graham. the search for the student has been called off in light of what law enforcement is calling recent evidence. police found human remains saturday on an abandoned property eight mileses from where hannah was last seen five weeks ago. gene is in virginia and forensic teams are searching the area. it is an area that may have been familiar to the key suspect in hannah's disappearance. what are you learning? >> that's what we're learning. we were in a residential area that is about four miles away where these remains were found yesterday and we spoke with neighbors and we spoke with the lady that is now living in the

house that jesse matthew and his mother used to live in up until they believe about 2008. so if you hear that he was familiar with this area, he was familiar with this area. he lived very close. and four miles may seem like a lot, so four miles away from where the remains are found is not far at all. law enforcement, crime scene investigators have been chroming for any potential investments. now we're in the area where those remains are. has there been any identification at all? what will the identification be because we were not even told if it was male or female but the facts are that as soon as they discovered those remains it was the chesterfield law enforcement doing a routine search about a

little more than 24 hours ago. they searched an abandoned property and local law enforcement told a local television station that it was skeletal remains without any hair. they did not feel that the bones had been blunt force trauma or any impact to them, but it's been five weeks since hannah graham went missing. once we get the identification of those remains, then there can finally be an end to this story. >> when we think about it. hannah graham's parents had asked for any information. they were desperate to know what happened to her. why right now have police not positively identified her? how long is that expected to potentially take? >> that could take a while because as i have said it was skeletal remains that they found no flesh at all.

i believe they have to bring in a forensic an throw polgs and get that dna to be positively identified. this is the first full day of the death investigation because that is what this is now. that is from the press conference yesterday. that's something else that the chief medical examiner's office has been looking at. the cause of death can be extremely difficult when you're talking skeletal remains because it does not offer that much as far as how someone died. what is this connection here? what are we hearing from him? >> we have never been told what the forensics are that link or

do not link him to hannah graham. we know there were two searches done at his apartment. countless items taken from his vehicle. we know that for weeks from the department of virginia lab that would have been his property and define hannah's dna. we do know there was a chart. there is a kidnapping charge against jesse matthew. he sits in the county jail not too far from where i am. >> he has not yet pled guilty to any of this or been charged with abduction. jean, clearly the charges will likely go up as the pliz continue their investigation. >> and now to our other big story in the fight against ebola in america.

they are forming a military quick strike team and will provide military. >> this is a team for the first time of military medical professionals. get trained up within the next couple of days and ready to deploy with civilian health authorities, cdc, whatever. they will name a location. the team will be able to go there. >> let's go cnn at the white house now. erin, what can you tell us about this quick strike team. is this the pentagon acting in concert with the pert. >> well, first of all, it was the department of health and human services that requested

this, the defense department and the defense department agreed to do this. this team will be made of five doctors, 20 nurses and then five training specialists who know how to use that personal protective equipment and once deployed they will teach other health care officials and administrators in hospitals how to use that correctly and effectively. they will be able to deploy within 72 hours once they are finished training in texas. they will be able to go anywhere within the united states once an ebola case is determined. >> we had former health and human services secretaries just a short while ago. we have all of these different departments.

big bureaucratic agencies to work together to create elite teams to handle this better. on friday night as well as saturday night through tl was a big meeting. the homeland security secretary as well as sylvia who is the secretary of hhs. also the vice president was there briefing the president on what happened in dallas. the contact tracing, the status of that, as well as all the other measures that they are taking in a kind of help that local and state agencies need from the federal government. but ron was not at that meeting. he was at the white house yesterday but he has not yesterday started and has not yet had day one on the job. it will be his mission over time to coordinate all of the efforts

21 day quarantine or self-monitoring period is expected to come to an end tonight at midnight. she is now as you mentioned back in texas after the cruiseship arrived early this morning in galveston and according to health officials, the woman and her travel partner were allowed to get off the ship without any restrictions because again she did not exhibit any symptoms indicating there was an ebola infection and because of some blood tests that were connected by the state. >> do we know whether this lab supervisor was one of the 80 health care workers at that hospital who were being monitored? that's one of the things that hospital has kept telling everybody that the health care workers are being monitored. was she one of them? >> well, we know that there are -- there has been a lot of numbers out there throughout the entire process about how many people have been monitored. we know she is among the 48 whose monitoring period will be

admitted. finally an apology. still it's not totally clear why he was not and why that diagnosis was so crucially delayed. we know that can be deadly. >> in the case of mr. duncan, it ultimately was. the hospital has taken an devastating blow as well. folks not wanting to go to the hospital can this particular hospital recover from this? >> that is exactly the question i asked the clinical chief of this hospital on friday. they will survive. they have to look at the numbers.

it really remains to be seen what the long term consequences are. >> do you know the doctors and nurses who worked there, have they been mobilized to other hospitals? are they sort of waiting to see how this all plays out? >> that's another question that we posed and this apology has come together. this physician, i really wanted to know on that first night that mr. duncan presented, did a doctor take a travel history and the doctor said yes, a doctor did. the determination was that he is a local resident. i know that is not the end result. you would actually know if the patient had traveled outside of the state or kounry. we still have unanswered questions.

>> they are very young and you have to wonder whether in fact while they may have been trained to deal with some diseases perhaps they were not trained properly how to deal with this kind of infection. it's not just ebola but how you get rid of all of that waste. that takes weeks and weeks for people to understand how to do that properly. is that a factor? >> absolutely. we are thought the hospital did do a good job of commune katding ability ebola care but he failed with the next it ration of that training. he said to me they should have done an in person training. when i pressed him as to why they did not, and his response was very defensive. he said to me, that's because of

that is very odd. the other thing that i found to be odd is without a positive identification of the skeletal remains, to note fay the parents and to create a situation where they maybe for the first time are closing in on, you know, the fact that their daughter might be deceased, that's kind of unusual unless the police are reasonably positive. >> perhaps clothing. >> dental records are usually used. a variety of ways. >> if they have one suspect in this case, now we are learning that in fact he did live about four miles from that area with his mom a couple of year ace go. >> as much as substantially you could establish what you just said. that he would be familiar and he would be the type of person who would know the area and could

have placed it there. i think that is -- you would agrow. it could provide a treasure troef of information trace type of evidence. so depending on the dekpro sigs and clothing, where she was and how she was found. that could be very important to connect the killer. >> you know, the other thing is he has been charged with abduction with intend to defile and kidnapping. now you find the person who was kidnapped and they have been murdered. you can make out a murder case very easily. >> police are still going to officially identify hannah graham. they are not saying it would be that.

what's interesting is he has been sitting in a jail waiting for a hearing but it doesn't appear he was cooperating. is this part of the legal strategy. >> attorneys will advise their clients not to cooperate. it is unconstitutional but you have the right not to self-incriminate yourself. but that's why other things become important. the whole issue of consciousness of guilty. if you can recall early in the investigation that they had him in the police station he took off and went mia for a wperiod f time. why would a person behave that way? that's just some evidence. but more important will be all the forensic evidence here.

we know that the police went into his home, searched his home and car. it doesn't rely. >> it may stand on its own to the raise. it is to say to him listen, we know you killed her but we're going to take the death penalty off the table if you tell us where she is. obviously he chose to remain silent that puts the death penalty back in play. >> he has entered no plea but he has been linked to another woman who was also found murdered. he remains were found in 2010. do they prosecute case by case or could they lump them together if they find that he has responsibility for not just one

but both? a lot of times when you have one case that is kind of a weak case but the mo, the method of death is the same as another case, you link the two cases because then that wraps it up beyond a reasonable doubt. so they will link -- they will link them if they have to because it's really -- >> just to point to that even if they are not prosecuted simultaneously. what prosecutors will do is say it goes to motive and intent. what do they prosecute or what have you, evidence will come in and one to the other. >> 15 seconds on this. yes or no. ferguson evidence that in fact there may be two bullet holes in the car that for does that

>> i'm in the newsroom in new york and we begin with the u.s. military mobilizing to join america's fight against the ebola virus. the pentagon is forming a 30 person quick strike team designed to treat ebola patients anywhere in the united states. the group will comprise doctors, nurses and others trained in the use of protective equipment. this comes as a cruise ship returned to point with a passenger linked to the only person in the united states to die from the disease. that passenger has now tested negative for ebola.
