>> even though there's a chance for progress, president obama is going to face a huge challenge, getting major legislation through congress. tom foreman gets through that. >> maybe president obama's agenda, his ability to move the discussion in congress in a direction he would like to see. here's some specific examples. there was a great outcry for more gun control in this country from some people. the democrats were unable to turn that into workable legislation. there's very little chance emboldened republicans will take that up now. what about immigration reform? this is abissue again upon which democrats and republicans have fundamentally disagreed as to the approach to it. in this case, the republicans may say to president obama you've got to come to us if he won't change their point of view, that could also be a nonstarter. the president says that he thinks he can work with republicans on infrastructure

knowing that republicans, too, like bridges and new dams and new roads, power grids, that sort of thing. here's the sticking point. many republicans are going to say yes, but that must be paid for without new taxes. you'll have to cut social programs. democrats will balk at that. and of course, there's obama care. a lot of top republicans are saying there's really no way to completely overturn this now, as some might wish. but what nekd they could do is down any efforts by the president and his party to put in improvements or things that might make it work better in democratic kbries. all of that could make all of this essentially fall by the wayside. and what's more, while that's happening, the republicans could be shoving legislation at the president that they know he will veto. that he just can't support. and then they will say, who's the party of no now?

died trying to flee east berlin during the 28 years the wall separated the city. >> some tried to get out no matter what the odds. >> reporter: when berlin was divided on august 13, 1961, this woman was 23 years old and in the final stages of her medical studies. she and her parents immediately knew they couldn't live in the communist east and decided to flee. we were unhappy in east germany, she said. we were christians and will be rals and that was just impossible under communism. the dictatorship of the proletariat was something we couldn't liver with. their way out was supposed fob a tunnel similar to this one from a house in the west to a house in the east. but when they came to the west, there was a nasty surprise. >> one of the helpers came out, she says. she was totally pale and says

the tunnel has been discovered. you can not use it. she was sent to jail for 2 1/2 years under harsh conditions with constant harassment and interrogations. a new exhibition at the berlin wall memorial shows the plight of people like schneider who kept thinking of new, creative ways to try to flee the communist state. a desire for freedom that put many of them behind bars. this is an exact replica of what the berlin wall used to look like. now, most estimates say 138 people died trying to get from east to west ber plin but that didn't deter others. there were people who tried to build tunnels. there were those who just tried to climb across and some even built their own aircraft to make it to freedom. after getting out of jail, she immediately tried to flee again with a false passport via

a 5-week-old sea otter pup is getting a second chance at life. >> yeah, check out this precious video of the otter who's being called pup 681. apparently someone walk on a beach in california heard her crying and called marine officials. >> i think we can hear her crying. >> there it is. the pup was alone to rescuers took her to monterey bay aquarium. they're on the threatened species list. and pup 681 is settling into her new home in chicago at the shed aquarium and is very happy. >> so cute. well, the first lady of the united states got a little help from some well known penguins to promote veterans day. >> hi. i'm michelle obama and i want to talk to you today about a group of people that inspires me every day.
