said some of the intel generals that he looked at showed that these suspects, i believe two were arrested in these terrorism raids, were planning to carry out these public beheadings, possibly at martin place. and now we have this unfolding inside a chocolate shop, a chocolate cafe. and you see these images over and over but it's really heart rendering to see innocent victims with their hands plastered up against the window there no idea what's going to happen next as authorities there have cordoned off the area for blocks now. you have officers in tactical gear and we're just waiting to see how things unfold but at this time we still don't know the exact number of hostages that are being held inside. according to reuters, a lindt executive said that there were about 13 working inside when this happened and sky business
5:50 pm
reporting that possibly as many as 30 customers. we're having a huge range of numbers, from 13 to maybe 40 hostages right now inside this chocolate chop. >> it's striking how little we know either from the hostage taker or from the authorities. we're waiting to hear from australian prime minister tony abbott. the police have issued a statement but it was very short information and described it as an ongoing one and said that the police were doing their work to try to bring it to a speedy and safe conclusion. so we don't know how many hostages there are, who the hostage taker or takers may be. we've had reports of the weaponry they may be carrying. there is a black flag with yellow lettering posted on one of the windows. the people who have seen it says it's the muslim profession of faith and that's symbol to enough about what we're watching but we don't know why it was put
5:51 pm
there. we are waiting and watching this unfold. we, again, because of our affiliates and colleagues in the area are seeing images from the scene, it's broad daylight. it's the middle of the day in a normal busy part of downtown. we are not bringing you live pictures out of concern for the security operation and safety of the -- >> you have state police services in australia. you don't have city police services. that's very, very typical. they never give out a lot of information. they give out bare bones until they have a very clear idea of what is going on, until everything is essentially wrapped up. we're not going to get a lot of information from this from the police until they hold a briefing and they are not going to hold a briefing until many, many hours from now, until this is over or essentially established a handle on the situation. >> it would be incumbent on the prime minister to explain what is going on. that's part of the interest of
5:52 pm
what we're hearing and as we're looking at the pictures of the hostage scene, we have a live camera trained on the podium where the prime minister is expected to speak. no activity. we expected him some time ago but he's got a lot on his plate. >> all right. i was just going to recap what's happening as we wait for the prime minister to speak. we are following a hostage situation at a pedestrian mall, and this video -- this is not live -- this video you're looking at is the building where all of this is unfolding. it's a lindt chocolate cafe. we don't know the number of hostages inside right now but this began several hours ago after a woman noticed a suspicious man -- we want to listen in now to prime minister tony abbott.

>> i'm going to make a short statement on the hostage situation at martin place in sydney. new south wales are responding and they are being strongly supported by commonwealth industries. we don't yet know the motivation of the perpetrator. we don't know whether this is politically motivated, although obviously there are some indications that it could be. we have to appreciate that even in a society such as ours, there are people who would wish to do us harm. that's why we have police and security organizations of the upmost professionalism that are ready and able to respond to a whole range of situations and contingencies, including the situation that we are now seeing in sydney. the whole point of politically motivated violence is to scare
5:54 pm
people out of being themselves. australia is a peaceful, open and generous society. nothing should ever change that and that's why i would urge all australians today to go about their business as usual. of course, if anyone does have any suspicions of untoward activity, there's the national security hotline 800-123-400 which i would urge them to call. i can let you know that the national security committee of the cabinet has been briefed on this incident. i've been in regular contact with premier baird over the course of the last couple of hours. i've been briefed by
5:55 pm
commission commissioner pea of the new south wales police. this is an unfolding situation and as the situation unfolds, there will be operational updates provided by the new south wales police. i want to assure people that the ordinary business of government must go on and it will go on and that's why our treasurer and fi ma nans minister will be releasing our plan. finally, this is a very disturbing incident he can understand the concerns and anxieties of the australian people at a time like this. but our thoughts and prayers must, above all, go out to the individuals who are caught up in this -- i can think of almost nothing more distressing, more
5:56 pm
terrifying than to be caught up in such a situation and our hearts go out to those people. i'm going to leave it to the new south wales police who are in operational charge of this incident to provide those kinds of details. obviously in a situation like this, all sorts of reports fly around. all sorts of claims are made so i do urge everyone to exercise caution in tlear reporting but i will leave all of the operational details to the new south wales police who, as i understand it, will begin providing operational updates shortly. thank you. >> okay. you were just listening to australia's prime minister tony abbott responding to the situation unfolding, the hostage situation in the heart of sydney. you heard him say this is a very
5:57 pm
disturbing incident, that his thoughts and prayers go to the families and the people, the victims being held hostage right now. and he did indicate, he did say that we don't know what the motivation is but there are indications that this may have been politically motivated and we heard him there urging the public to just go about their business as usual. >> one thing that was interesting, our viewers in the united states and international viewers would not pick up on it. he talked about the midyear fiscal release. until that happened, that was the biggest story in australia. they were dealing with a deficit and there was some talk that they were not going to do it because of this. they were going to delay it. clearly the prime minister decided to take his own advice, which is go about business as usual, carry on, don't let this affect you. that's why they are continuing on with that. >> i'm struck that he made no effort to dissipate the cloud of confusion which hangs over this
5:58 pm
incident and i make that point because he made that point. we have heard only the sketchiest details about who the hostage taker might be or what he or she might have wanted to achieve and he specifically said very little except to warn the media against those early reports. all sorts of reports fly around. all kinds of claims are made. he was warning us that the earlier reports, which we're not going to bother repeating, let's stay away from them and the cloud of confusion and mystery about who this hostage taker may be stands. >> i would suggest that the reason why he didn't give a lot of details about exactly what is happening and who is in there is because they just don't know. >> that may be. >> that is the problem. there is somebody inside that coffee shop with a gun, a shotgun, maybe a machete, possibly wearing a bandana, according to some reports, who made the hostages hold this flag up against the window and right now that's pretty much all
5:59 pm
that's out there. there's not a lot. >> it raises a lot of questions about why, if you're right, they don't know more. is the hostage taker refusing to communicate with authorities? are there communications under way that they simply don't want to make public? the mystery is nearly complete. >> you've been seeing the video cycle through. a couple victims holding their hands up, pressed up against the window. they are at the lindt chocolate shop cafe where people meet up and have hot chocolate, hot tea. >> the prime minister described it as nothing more distressing or terrifying than what the people are enduring he enduring. he's absolutely right about that. >> all right. we've been monitoring this situation for you inside of the lindt cafe at a very busy mall in sydney.
