pedram javaheri. hello, and welcome to our viewer news the united states and all around the world. i'm rosemary church. we do begin with this breaking news in the search for airasia flight 8501. crews have found the airliner's tail section. now, this is footage shot by divers who located the tail in the expanded side of the plane. searchers are looking for more debris this could be a major development. the airline's flight recorders, the so-called black boxes are usually located in that tail section. but airasia's officials says it
11:01 pm
is important to find out which part is found. he says if the right section has been found, the boxes should be there. but there is no word yet on whether they have been found. so we'll keep an eye on that. all right, well for more we want to go to cnn's anna coren, she joins us in indonesia, where it is just after 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. of course this is a significant find anna but we can't assume that the black boxes are in the tail section, and we can't assume this is the right side as airasia says that is the critical side of where the boxes would be of course that is the hope here. >> reporter: yes, absolutely, day 11 into the search rosemary. this is all they have. as you say a major, major breakthrough in the search for the remains of airasia flight
11:02 pm
8501. i just want to give you some detail as they came across this area the speculation, whether it was pings from the black boxes. that has been ruled out. as of this morning it was the side sonar scan that picked up the ping. the echo sound basically gives a 3-d image of the debris on the ocean floor. several hours later that data processed, the chief authorized a remote camera to enter into the water and survey the scene. once those images were confirmed he gave authorization for divers to get into the water. and that is when they confirmed that the tail of this plane was there. and those are the images that we have been showing our viewers now for the last few hours.
11:03 pm
taken this morning, this is how it unfolded. and as you say, major hope that the black boxes are still in that tail. we don't know if the entire tail is intact. as you say, the ceo of airasia, tony fernandez says if the tail is there, then yes, the black boxes will be there. we're talking about the black boxes as well as the auto recorder. and then rosemary we'll have some answers as to what went wrong with the airbus 80. we know it left with the crew and passengers 40 minutes into the flight is disappeared from radar. minutes before that the pilot asked to climb to a higher altitude because of the thunderstorms in the area. that was denied because of the air traffic. several minutes later, the plane disappeared from the radar,
11:04 pm
crashed into the java sea, and for the last hours they have been searching for the wreckage. it is hoped, rosemary that the passengers are yet to be strapped into their seats. but as yet, finding the tail this morning a huge breakthrough in the search. >> absolutely, anna update asand as we look at the vision of the tail perhaps it will not take them long to determine if this is the right side of the wing and how long will it take them to extract that part of the tail section out of the water? >> reporter: well look they sent the divers back down to inspect. this is the middle of the monsoon season. the weather has been playing havoc with the search and rescue operation. but all operations have been sent to this particular area to
11:05 pm
comb that part of the java sea for more of the debris. as for pulling up that particular piece of the plane, the tail it's going to take time. obviously, the divers they are the ones who are going to have to locate the black boxes, if they are there within the vicinity. otherwise, they're going to have to pull that tail out. according to the head of the search and rescue agency here in indonesia, he says that they have all the right equipment. all the right assets to do this particular job. so it is just going to be a matter of time before they get that tail out. find those black boxes, download that information. and then we will have some answers as to what happened to the ill-fated flight. >> absolutely our anna coren reporting there live from surabaya in indonesia. it is just after 2 p.m. in the afternoon, many thanks to you.
11:06 pm
i want to go now to devin ross a former pilot, aviation expert he joins us now from sydney. captain, thank you for joining us. now that we know the tail section has been located under water. give us an idea of what happens next. of course we have learned also that it is very important to determine that this is the right-hand side of the tail. are you able to determine that just by looking at the visuals that we've seen so far? >> rosemary i was not able to see the visuals -- having got caught up in that part. the finding of the tail section is extremely important. i was listening to your reporter in surabaya. it should actually be possible for divers to find the flight data recorder and the voice recorder in the tail. the location is known precisely. and if they have the tail and a few tools with them they should be able to take the recorders
11:07 pm
out of the tail section without even having to raise the tail section to the surface. it is not that hard. and it's done all the time for maintenance on the ground. so with guidance and an engineer they should be able to find the data recorders. they should have the right piece of the tail. >> and hopefully, that is exactly what will happen. but once those boxes then are retrieved, how is the flight data and voice recordings. how are they retrieved, and how is the process generally done? >> the two are different, the voice recorder as the name suggests is simply recording every audio sign that occurs on the flight deck. between the pilot, it could be warning bells, gongs, bells, it would have the flight attendant providing a cup of coffee if that happened. everything that happens on the flight will be recorded.
11:08 pm
that is downloaded and listened to. the flight data recorder is quite a different scenario, it requires special software. so that will have to go to one special labs around the world. and there are not that many. because fortunately we don't have that many where they have to set up so many labs. there is one in the uk and one in singapore, certainly one here in australia. the flight data recorder will take a bit longer to analyze. they need to download well over 200 parameters of the aircraft's operating data which is recorded. and that takes analysis. so you could be looking at a month or a couple of months before that is completed. >> and just before we finish sir, i wonder if you could explain to us once that is done once that goes through that process, and presumably they would go to either singapore or australia for that how likely is it that those two black boxes
11:09 pm
will answer the many questions surrounding this air tragedy? >> look almost certainly, i mean we're talking sort of a 100% certainty that we will get all of the answers from those two boxes. but if the two pilots had been discussing the issue and are talking about the problem they have got that will tell a lot almost immediately. the rate of descent for the cabin pressure everything that has basically gone wrong, i suppose, and the final minutes of the flight will be evident from the flight data recorder. okay it is not the final story because there is a lot more associated with this. the actual report will take a year probably at least to be produced. and that will go into all sorts of other data including the decision-making process, and that is the big issue at this moment. i'm very concerned about the decisions made leading up to the flight being in jeopardy in a
11:10 pm
thunderstorm. that is not something that should have happened. there are a lot of issues surrounding that. so the action is not that cut and dried. it is not that simple. it requires a lot of analysis and background checking as well. >> all right, we'll see what happens in the aftermath of this as well. a lot of questions. a lot of people also re-thinking about the detection after the crashes and what changes need to be made. so captain desmon ross thank you for joining us from sydney thank you. and we'll turn to another breaking news story, officials from the middle east say at least 27 people have been killed in a car bombing in yemen's capital. dozens more wounded. there has been no claim of responsibility yet. yemen has been racked by violence since the long-time president was forced from power back in 2011. it is the second deadly bomb

attack this year in the country as rebel battle al qaeda in the arabian peninsula for control. and financial markets around the world looking to rebound today from a global selloff due in part -- in large part i should say to plunging oil prices. markets in the asian region are mixed. japan, nikkei is up only slightly in europe they're expected to show the first decline in consumer prices since 2009. analysts think that will force the central european bank to act quickly with a program of quantitative easing. meanwhile, the value of the euro is continuing to fall trading

11:14 pm
not unrealistic. >> $50 is still a high price for crude oil. well if you looked at it and had a 3.5% growth rate and you were looking at prices in 1997 being $20, that is $50 today. but then if you looked at 1992 when we fell into low teens and we did the same calculation, it gave you somewhere around $20. so it is a possibility. >> there you go. well the sharp drop in oil prices means some of the world's biggest oil producers are losing money, iran is taking the biggest financial hit right now. to break even it needs oil prices of $140 a barrel. algeria needs at least $122 a barrel. and venezuela and nigeria need $120 a barrel. russia is not far behind needing $105 a barrel and angola needs oil prices close to $100 a
