12:03 am
so this is something they'll be tackling and with that, so many questions of when they come back, when these young boys, young men go off to wage jihad and they go off to syria or to yemen, et cetera, when they come back, what to -- europe and the world, should they be worried about. we have seen that they have training, the kouachi brothers were training in yemen by al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. they are coordinated, we have seem them walking around with weaponry, so these are all topics that need to be discussed. and alongside that, maybe a discussion, a national debate about how you tackle that without stigmatizing the muslim community and making sure you don't see the rise of

islamaphobia. we have seen the rise of the far right and many worried about that here in france. rosy? >> interesting, you mentioned, they have been banned from this unity march, hasn't she? i do want to touch on the security, because it will be top priority here. how on earth are they going to be organizing this? >> reporter: absolutely. she has gained strength and heart, given the fact that these attacks were, you know, committed by these young muslim men. so of course, that's a huge concern. but today, the focus will be on the million or so people turning out in the streets. french government has said, the interior minister said they're not taking any risks. they're checking pretty much all the routes and streets.
12:05 am
parking is not allowed. snipers will be on the roof. you are looking at a map of exactly what that route will be. it will depart at 3:00 and it's about a three kilometer march. throughout that time, you'll see snipers, plain clothes police officers and anti-terror officers, a total of about 1,900 troops. take a listen to what the interior minister had to say in regards to the preparations. >> translator: 150 policemen in plain clothes will assure the security of the distinguished persons and there will be sharp shooters on the roof and the drain also be inspected. >> reporter: of course, we've got a million people turning out. public transport is free. but we have been hearing the last 24 hours, many dignitaries

from around the world will be showing up in a show of support and solidarity, a show of unity against the atrocities seen here this week. among those coming here, we have a list of some who will be appearing today. that will be the british prime minister david cameron, angela merkel of germany will also be here. we also know the palestinian leader mahmoud abbas will be taking 35r89. and also the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. and many, many others. of course, police not taking any chances, covering all angles, and they've been told to keep their weapons on them at all times, rosy, and to stay away from social media. as you and i know, you have g.p.s. enabled on your twitter and facebook, they can track you. so that's a huge concern. but the french police and french

interior sounding confident they have a grip on this. >> cnn will be covering this step by step. we'll check back in with you just in a little while this hour, reporting there live from paris. many thanks, as always. the family of the policeman killed during the "charlie hebdo" massacre paid tribute to a man they described as the pillar of their family. he was the first police officer at the scene of the attack. he was shot as he tried to stop the suspects from fleeing. he was a muslim, and on saturday, ahmed's brother called for calm, warning people not to confuse islam with extremists. >> translator: devastated by this barbaric act, we associate ourselves with the pain of all the victims. i address myself to the racists
12:08 am
that one must not confuse muslims with extremists. hold back from tarring everybody with the same brush. you are attacking people. it won't bring our dead back and it won't appease the families. >> authorities are trying to track down the companion of the man suspected in the attack on the kosher supermarket in paris. the last known location was near the syrian border. hayat boumeddiene had flown from there to istanbul at the beginning of the year. atika scubert reports on the hunt for some answers. >> reporter: when amedy coulibaly gunned down four people and took hostages, police issued this arrest warrant for him and his partner, hayat

boumeddiene, suggesting she had been alongside her husband for the attack. police said she was armed and dangerous. france's public prosecutor linked the couple to the attackers at "charlie hebdo." >> translator: it appears from the investigation, especially from phone taps that cherif kouachi's spouse called more than 500 times to amedy coulibaly's partner hayat boumeddiene, which shows permanent and strong links between the couples. >> reporter: this is where amedy coulibaly and hayat boumeddiene were living. it's about a ten-minute drive where coulibaly is believed to have gunned down the police officer and 20 minutes from the kosher supermarket where he took hostages. police are still inside the apartment investigating. their names are clearly printed on their mailbox and police still stake out the couple's apartment. photos of hayat boumeddiene in 2010 surfaced, showing her armed with a cross bow.
12:10 am
court records show they met with a top al qaeda recruiter. but now as the investigation widens, it appears she was not even in france at the time of the shooting. officials say she arrived most likely destined for syria. that's not the first dead end. initially police named three 179s in the "charlie hebdo" attack, including an 18-year-old. but friends of mourad insisted he was innocent, in school at the time of the attack more than 100 miles away, an alibi police confirmed after he turned himself in voluntarily. police then cast a wide net, but investigators are still seeking answers from anyone in france or abroad, including hayat boumeddiene.

moments before he was killed by a barrage of police bullets, terror suspect amedy coulibaly apparently took a phone call from a french radio station, the station rtl says they called the store's land line as the hostage situation was unfolding inside. the station says the gunman took the call, tried to hang up, but the line stayed open. in a recording of what followed, the gunman can be heard trying to justify his actions to his hostages. take a listen.

bureau. thank you for talking with us. we do want to start with this very disturbing news that the suspect that we heard from there, the suspect in the kosher supermarket, possibly activated sleeper cells before he was killed by the police there. but what information are you getting on that and what does that mean exactly? >> actually, there's been some calls, which has been given by amedy coulibaly yesterday -- sorry, not yesterday, at the time of the kosher hostage taking. actually, he got in touch with people giving instruction to basically kill cops. so we can assume that he got in touch with the previous members of his own cells and people he was training and preparing attacks with. so that's a pretty disturbing news. but on the other side, the
12:18 am
positive news is that the anti-terrorist director has been able to intercept those conversations, and basically react pretty fast. so therefore, we can assume that those people are known and that there is a good chance they will be neutralized and getting into action. >> well, that is comforting at least. but what do you make of the relationship between the kouachi brothers who carried out the attack at the "charlie hebdo" offices and amedy coulibaly, the suspect who held hostages at the kosher supermarket, and what level of training do you think they received? do you think there's more we need to learn about the suspects? >> well, obviously, you know, there is one man we never talk about which is the planner that planned to bomb the u.s. embassy in paris. he was arrested, he was in touch
12:19 am
with those two men. i was say he's the headmaster of the whole cell and the whole ideology that was basically breeding those people. so therefore, there's still a lot to come. because obviously this cell to which belonged the two brothers in 2008 was estimated 10, 15 people channeling through iraq in order to fight there with al qaeda and the islamic state. so therefore, we can assume with the syrian war, this number was expended and we're facing a larger number of people who, for some of them, would probably get training and battle hardened coming back from syria. >> what about the fourth suspect who got away, hayat boumeddiene, where do you think she is now, and why do you think she left france january 2nd before these
12:20 am
heinous attacks were even pulled off? >> hayat boumeddiene has played a central role in the attack, in the way that in 2014, there were 500 phone calls between her and the wife of one of the two brothers. so basically, both brothers knew that they were very monitored and checked by the intelligence service. they were using their wives as proxies in order to prepare logistics and carry out the preparation of the attack. so basically, this woman is extremely valuable. so therefore, as she didn't participate in the attack, in order not to give any information later on, she was obviously figure among the prime suspects, when she exited in the same way. people were doing it in the sviet era time.

>> all right. many thanks to you for joining us and sharing your analysis with us. we appreciate it. >> thank you. our coverage of the terror attacks in france will continue. but first, 5089 group of islamic militants carry out a massacre. this one in nigeria. we'll have the grim details on that rampage coming up. we'll take you to the floor of the java sea where divers recovered the tail section of flight 8501 and continue the search for the plane's black boxes. that and more when we come back. do stay with us.

welcome back, everyone. suspicion is falling on the militant group boko haram on a new attack in nigeria. a bomb evidently strapped onto a 10-year-old girl, was blown up saturday in a crowded part of the country. security sources tell reuters at least 16 people were killed, and more than 20 wounded. officials say it's likely the bomb was triggered by remote control. the city where the bomb went off is in the heartland of the boko haram insurgency. the news comes as boko haram is being accused of a massacre on a horrific scale. hundreds, perhaps thousands of people are reported to have been killed in the days long attack.
12:25 am
we want to turn now to our reporter who is monitoring the violence in nigeria. so diana, the details, just shocking. what do we know about this massacre that took place? >> reporter: well, so little, because it's up in a very remote corner of northeast nigeria in a fishing community on the shores of lake chad. we're hearing reports from eyewitnesss from refugees who have fled that it could be hundreds, it could be as many as 2,000 people who were kills since last saturday when boko haram militants moved into the city and started pillages, slaughtering, setting fire to the houses, and they have done the same thing in surrounding villages. apparently bodies are littered across the ground. it's been impossible for security forces to get there and engage in a true head count of
12:26 am
the number of victims. but a local official has said as many as 2,000 people have been killed in this spate of obscene violence over the last week. thousands of refugees have fled. there are 1,000 refugees sitting on an island in the middle of lake chad stranded effectively. there are 7,000 refugees who fled into western chad. and 20,000 more who fled to the regional capital which is about 230 kilometers further south where they are being looked after in refugee camps or centers for the displaced there. that is the same down where on saturday, yesterday, this 10-year-old girl blew herself up or they believe someone remotely detonated this device she had strapped to her waist.
12:27 am
we are hearing from local police there were as many as 20 people killed in that attack. this is less than a month now until the presidential elections in nigeria and boko haram sending a message to the president, that they intend to keep this campaign of violence going throughout this election period. rosemary? >> the details simply horrifying. later, we'll have a guest to address the question, why the government and military is unable to fight boko haram. many thanks to you, diana, reporting there with all the details on the violence in nigeria. as the clock ticks, the beginning of a huge unity rally in paris, we'll have a live report on the extraordinary security measures being put in place to protect dozens of world leaders, and perhaps up to 1 million people. we're back in a moment. ♪ turn around
