polls to cast a vote for their financial futures. we'll tell you what's at stake. welcome to our viewers in the u.s. and around the world. i'm linda kinkade. let's get straight to the top story. we begin in india where u.s. president barack obama is visiting for a second time to cement relations between the two countries countries. right now he's meeting with indian prime minister nor ren da modi. they have strong culture ties but the relations between the two countries became strained in recent years. there are disagreements about climate, trade and restrictions with pack tan. they hope to translate that trip into diplomatic progress. cnn's white house koorpt michelle kusinski is traveling with the president. first, the president has described the friendship between the u.s. and india as one of the

defining relationships of the 21st century. is that what you've witnessed so far? >> we've heard the white house talk about this for months now, especially when prime minister modi shortly after he was elected, one of the first big trips he made was to the united states. he spent a week there spending quite a a lot of time with president obama. even though there was the controversy over modi not really having a visa to be in the u.s. of course as head of state that nullifies that and he's certainly able to visit. but this time around with president obama visiting india, it's really significant because this is the first time that a foreign head of state has been the special guest of honor for republican day, india's independence day. so india is excited about that. they see that as extremely significant and i think symbolic cli nothing represented that more than when president obama arrived at the airport earlier

this morning and he was greeted by the president obama. that wasn't expected. not only that. prime minister greeted him with a big hug. that's a representative way to get the two days of talks started. after the meeting we'll hear remarks from both sides. we don't expect them to take questions, which is interesting and also disappointing but we'll hear what each has to say, linda. >> it was indeed a very warm reception this morning. and of course even before the first official meeting between the two members, india media reported that they had struck a deal on nuclear trade. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: that's a big deal that this is going to be greater cooperation. also u.s. products coming into india. that's really been a point that cooperation is necessary. also trade has been a big piece of this. geb we've been hearing the white

house talk about the need for greater cooperation. you mentioned the climate. that's another area where they really want to make progress. it just seems that both sides have not been sable to stress enough how much they want this relation to grow over coming years. i mean india is the world's biggest democracy, the u.s. is a super pow rer. they want to find agreement on this. the u.s. sees modi as something as a reformer. they feel he is committed to reforms. of course some of this remains to be seen. he's the new prime minister. they feel hes's committed to it. they think the u.s. can find a role. >> certainly such a lot to discuss there in new delhi. thanks so much. in saudi arabia world

leaders and other dignitaries are streaming the in to pay their respects to the late king am dueam du la. he's being remembered about bringing about modest reform in a deeply conservative saudi arabia. isis claims it's killed one of the two japanese hostages it was holding pop these are the men in a ransom demand video lasted week. a newly released video recording shows him hold a picture of what appears to be his debeheaded friend. now, first, the woman that's

being held by authorities in jordan has not been seen publicly in nine years. what can you tell us about her? >> reporter: she's an iraqi. in 2005 she was part of a four member suicide bomber deem that was dispatched by al qaeda in iraq to strike jordan. on november 9th of this year three hotels here were hit by suicide bombers. she was captured by jordanian authorities and she confessed saying she was in one of the hotels with her husband who attacked and blew up a wedding party there. but that her explosives vest failed to detonate. she was sentenced to date in 2006. she has been in prison here in jordan since. now in 2006 jordan halted the death penalty and there was a

moratorium on executions here. it wassing a kei da and iraq responsible for that bombing. she's seen as a hero. this is part of a group that carried out a terror attack that really shook this nation this country. and what is referred to in jordan as the 9/11 attacks of this country. >> and the prime minister of japan recently met with the jordanian king. what is jordan doing to assist? >> reporter: well, jordan has been working closely with the japanese government over the past week. we've seen the japanese embassy here set up a crisis center that's headed by the deputy foreign minister of japan to try

and secure the release of the hostages. they've been working closely with a jordanians. but both of the officials here, jordanian officialance japanese have been very tightlipped about what's going on behind the scenes. one would assume that japan had set up the crisis center had been working closely with the jordanian authorities because of some sort of open channelance back channels that the jordanians might have to try to help them. keeping in mind here that just last month jordan has lost a hostage to isis, a jordanian pilot whose f-16 crashed near isis territory and he's been held since by isis. so a very tough position here for the jordanian government linda. we've spoken to officials here. they say they will not comment yet on this demand. they're working to verify the authenticity of the video after

which they'll be speaking publicly. >> is it likely that jordan will consider that demand to release, given that she may then go and become a suicide bomber again? and i guess, will they -- is her likely fate to be execution, as she -- that is her sentence? >> reporter: linda, it is. it seems highly unlikely that they will. there has been speculation. some experts have been saying that. once that jordanian pilot was taken that there would be a demand put forward by the terror organization to exchange the jordanian pilot for her and another al qaeda prisoner. she has been sentenced to death. we know that her sentence has been appealed a few times sense.

she remains on death row. it's very difficult to say what the jordanian government will be doing now. very difficult situation for them. jordan last year was in a similar situation, a less high profile one. the jordanian ambassador had been kidnapped and the group holding him at the time was asking for a release of a militant a jihadist who has been in jordanian jails convict odd f a plot to blow up the airport here. and jordan did send that prisoner back to libya in an apparent swap deal and the ambassador was released. although the governor was denying that there was a prisoner swap. when he arrived in libya, he was a free man. very difficult situation right now to see what happens. we'll keep on eye on that. >> thanks so much for that. we'll talk to you soon. still to come on cnn, why

we're following a high stakes election in greece where voters are deciding the country's future. the polls opened for the voter to choose which party will head parliament. the leader promises to raise the minimum wage, cut taxes and pension cuts. if the party wins -- now for more of this i'm joined by linda in athens. the economy has shrunk drastically since the 2008 global crisis. what are people saying to you? >> reporter: well's austerity is going to be the main issue in this election. it's been dominating people's discuss and it will dominate their voting. the one shois is to stay the

course do what it's been doing for the last six years, but that comes with a huge cost for people. it's cost people their jobs. their living standards have dropped substantially in these last years. so a lot of people are saying enough is enough. the prime minister of the country did point out, when he went to vote this morning, that what really greece needs at this point is to remain on this course of stability. he actually made the following comment. the elections set out the future for us and our children we decide whether we will proveed dynamically with security or whether we're going to enter unknown territory. it's this unknown territory that a lot of greeks do seem to fear. but yet, at the same time because they're so keen on the change, they're willing to make that choice. the leader of the coalition of

the radical left the man who is promising that change and the person who is ahead in the polls right now also went to vote this morning. and he spoke about an end to fear and a return to dignity. let's have a listen. >> in grease will return democracy will be remained dignity, and the message is that our common future in europe is not the future of pos tearty. it's the future of democracy, solidarity and cooperation. >> reporter: so what he's talking about, he's talking about a different europe not just a different grease. he's talk about an end to austerity, a message that's very popular in many countries of the south that have also undergone

government debt and high structural deficits left investors fearful of a sovereign debt crisis. in 2010 thaw wur accused of falsifying their deficits for years. they agreed on a bailout. unemployment is over 25%. the highest in the european union. as a response to higher tax rates and increasing number of greeks have fled from the passenger man. greece is home to europe's most active black market worst about 24% of gpd. and fears of greece unable to pay back its debt led to speculation of a possibility exit from the euro zone. space has arrested four

the snowstorm exits the east coast of the united states. another powerful storm may strike the same region on monday. meteorologist eric van dam is at the weather channel >> i think the first storm you talked about was the curtain raiser for what's to come.

this is what it left behind in brooklyn and in the central park region. we had a few inches of snowfall. that storm is exiting the east coast very quickly. this is what it left behind eight inches from new jersey to massachusetts, as well as the bronx, lesser amounts there around 4 inches. look at the plains state. you can see this large low pressure system spinning around ohio. doesn't have a moisture source to work with just yet. but the storm system is going to deepen and strengthen monday and tuesday. notice the computer models indicate there will be a mixture of rain and snow across the ohio river valley then the storm moves off the east cost rapidly intensifies and we're talking about measuring our snowfall in not inches but feet. over a foot of snow in new york

by tuesday evening, look at boston 19 inches of snowfall. this is the global forecast model by the way. the european model brings the low pressure a little closer to the shoreline and that will allow for the heavier snow band to line up right around the interstate 95 corridor 26 inches for new york 22 inches possible in boston. of course we've got a few model run to come together on the snowfall totals. but one thing is for sure a major northeast storm is in the cards for the first part of the workweek. let's time oubt this storm for you. you can see some of the snowfall overspreading pittsburgh pennsylvania all the way to the city of brotherly love. this would be by monday morning, rush hour time. then it reaches new york midday then we start to focus the snow and heavier bands as well as the stronger winds, blizzard like

this is cnn breaking news. ♪ president obama receives a warm welcome in india in a state visit. officials are calling a new era in u.s. and india relations. >> we're waiting for the president and india's prime minister narendra modi to hold a joint statement. we're expecting this to begin in fewer than 15 minutes. good morning, i'm suzanne mall view in for christy paul. >> i'm victor blackwell. come in a little soon here. we're coming on early to bring you the president's comments. president obama expected to speak just moments from now. he arrived in new delhi this morning and prime minister narendra modi greeted him on the tar mac. this is an important detail because it's not the usual pot kol. it really demonstrates this

personal friendship that's been developed between the two leaders. he also met the india president. and visited the presidential palace. >> and president obama also visiting the memorial to gady india's father of the nation of course, for a beautiful rewreath laying ceremony. he is attending the parade happening tomorrow. also the first u.s. president to visit india twice. >> let's talk more about the president's visit and what can really be accomplished here. we have with us cnn law enforcement analyst tom fuentes. i want to talk about the comments that the president made before heading over to india about security in the region especially pakistan and in some ways as it was received in pakistan criticizing them. and that was viewed as appeasing india about some of the safe

havens there. will there be in do you believe, security agreements coming out of this visit? >> well victor i think there will be discussions about the situation there. you know india and pakistan have had, you know conflict with each other fb decades, particularly you know their dispute over the region of kazmir. and you know pakistan as recently as 2008 of course we had the attack and you know those terrorists went to mum by to create an act that would be covered by the media worldwide. they've been conducting hundreds of attacks throughout india for many many year more than two decades and probably 5,000 understoodians have been killed over the years. we haven't heard a lot about it over the rest of the world. and that's why they choose that attack for worldwide media

coverage. nothing has really been settled. of course you have two nuclear powers that have these kinds of disputes. i think that will be a major concern to discuss. >> i want you to talk a little bit about the history between the united states and india. we know there's been a great deal of distrust because the united states is really walked the fine line in having a relationship a friendship with india and with pakistan. do you think that the president here with his warm friendship with the prime minister and the president of india, that he's going to be able to convince them that this is a new era and a knew relationship between the two countries, that they don't need to worry, necessarily, about one playing off the other? >> yeah i think exactly, suzanne. you know if concern is that when you go to pakistan and expect friendship and cooperation there, then when you go to india now and do the same

thing, or the pakistanis and become distrustful. you're trying to balance all of those issues. you know again, with two nuclear powers in the region it's almost for u.s. intelligence and security concerns you know it's like do we need this extra head ache of tension in that region as well as tension to the west dealing with you know the other terror organizations based throughout the region. >> tom, let's talk more about not just security but the nuclear and defense angles of that. i imagine that there will be any greater ties any more discussions about the nuclear defense ties between the two countries? >> well i think, you know the worry is that you know the wrong person or group will get their hands on the nuclear button, especially in pakistan that has been a concern that you know the taliban or

somebody could get their hands on that kind of weaponry. it's always been a concern that it be secured. and then of course you want to not have the conflict escalate so that there's any reason for india to retaliate, particularly in a nuclear way. so that's a trn here is that you know almost trying to play marriage counselor, if you will to keep the countries from going that violent with each other. >> explain to us why it is that we haven't seen a greater relationship in terms of nuclear trade between india and the united states. i attended president bush's trip there in march of 2006 when he was talking then with the leader and they were the workeringsings and the beginning of a nuclear deal there but it never materialized. why is that? >> i don't know.

i don't know what's going behind the scenes in those kind of discussions. so that's a good question. we'll see if that's talk about at all as a result of this meeting. >> tom, stick with us. we've got white house correspondent michelle kosinski with us now. shortly after the midterm elections there was a historic deal with china as it relates to greenhouse gases and climate change. there is one to be discussed with a deal in india. do we expect it to be as bold as the deal with china. >> reporter: the obama administration would like it to be that bold. the announcement with china was a big deal for the administration the reduction of gases over the next 20 and more years, that they would be having emissions emissions. things like that. but keep in mind that environmentalists in this

country and around the world criticized the deal saying it didn't go far enough and that didn't hold china responsible enough. so it's unclear if there is an agreement here what that would entail or would it go even farther. on the nuclear deal it's big news today in india. made media here is reporting that a deal with india has been finalized and that there are two points to it. first of all, the india would relax its liability requirements that is really prevented the u.s. and other countries from building nuclear reactors here. because they would be held responsible directly if there were an accident or some problem. so according to the indian press -- again, this hasn't been confirmed by the white house -- india is going to relax those requirements. not quite sure how that's going to be done. there is some talk over understood ya creating an insurance pool that would take care of any potential problems down the road. but another point would be that

the u.s. for years has been requiring nuclear material to be tracked once it enters india. there's some talk that that too has been relaxed. how again that would work. you know it's important that nuclear material would be tracked. so we're waiting to see the details of this deal if it has indeed been finalized. that could be the center point of what they're about to talk about when they give their remarks soon. >> michelle something we us asking tom and i wanted to follow up with that point. the possible nuclear deal. that was so significant, president bush in 2006 really trying to push already hard on that. one of the issues that came up that was a problem was the idea of international inspections. do you get a sense that perhaps india is a little more amenable now to the possibility of having international inspectors go ahead and be a part of the program? could that be part of the break through that we're seeing now? >> yeah we haven't heard

anything on that point specifically. what we're hearing is there's more cooperation and relaxation on both sides. this deal has been worked on since 2005. it stalled around 2008 on the points that we mentioned, especially liability. but it's really prevented other countries that have been wanting to get into the mix -- france is one of them -- from building anything here. we're hearing that there's been cooperation and some growth on both sides and what they're going to allow. and we're wait first of all, for the official announcement. and secondly what are the details? because, i mean for a decade it's prevented this deal from happening. so if this is true then there had to be some significant movement on both sides here. >> if you're just joining us within on the screen on your left you're seeing the arrival of president obama and to his right there you see the prime minister of india, prime minister norarendra modi.

a breaking of protocol. typically the prime minister would not arrive to meet the u.s. president. but a demonstration of these two men's personal affinity of one another. on the right side live pictures. we're awaiting a news conference statements from the president and the prime minister. help us understand michelle we saw just a few moments ago, maybe we can put them um on the screen president obama and the prime minister going to visit the memorial to gandhi when the prime minister was in the u.s. president obama took him to the king memorial in washington, d.c. these men personally like one another. and the value of that as these talks continue for the next couple of days. >> reporter: yeah. it does seem that way, that they have a relationship that has, you know been established from the start as friendly. we know that the visit of modi to the u.s. was very warm. that they covered a wide range of topics.

and they had enough time to really sit down and discuss some things. it really seems like when you look at how the world is moving these very modern topics that we've been talking about, like cyber security countering terrorism, the rise of china, that seems to overshadow all of these relationships with countries in asia. that these two are ready to move forward and establish some strong common ground that's going to be there for some time. i mean that's what they want to do. i mean there's been some frustration in the past with some of what's called india's unwillingness to commit on a number of issues that deeld would start to be in the works. but it's taken india some time to be willing to commit on them. here we're waiting to see what exactly will happen. >> all right. ma shil kosinski stay with us. we're going to take a quick break. live pictures here from new new delhi as we await statements
