auschwitz. >> auschwitz, and i'm happy to be here with you. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com well, that was a very powerful and moving hour by cn cnn's wolf blitszer there. tonight on this broadcast, terror threats at home and abroad and fears that the super bowl could be a target. and desperate attempts to save a journalist held by isis with time running out. and the bombshell of the murder trial of expatriot aaron hernandez in the wake of everything on the nfl's record of vie leps to the circuit of deflategate and with the super bowl around the corner, can the league solve its image problem? >> and adding insult to injury more snow on the way after the

blizzard of 2015. we have late arest on when and where. we so much to get to. and i want to begin with the spike of online and against airlines. we have renee marsh for us live at laguardia airport. there have been 50 online threats since january 17th, and what are the airlines doing to find who is responsibility? >> don, the fbi is working to search ip addresses to find the culprits responsible for this this, and as far as what is behind the uptick, i spoke to several officials today, and one o official telling me that these are copycat incident ss, and sparked by the incidents that is fueling it. but this is important to note that sit that it is a federal crime and even if the intent is not to bring down a jetliner and if somebody thought it was a funny
7:02 pm
prank, it is not. the federal aweuthorities are taking it seriously, and the punishment could be up to ten years behind bar, and oftentime s a plea deal so you could face hefty fine, and we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars. needless to say, we are talking about not only the fbi, but also from homeland security secretary jeh johnson, don. >> and do they believe it is coming from isis members? >> well i spoke with a couple of people today, and one official said to me and again, couching it as off of the record but he said to me isis most likely would not tweet that we are going to blow up a plane, they would simply do it. that being said we are in a time in which there is this threat from isis and aqap and so no one wants to take that chance and no one wants to be wrong that one time. so what you are seeing is fight
7:03 pm
fighter jets scrambled in one situation, and law enforcement, and bomb-sniffing dogs all called to the scene, because they don't want to take that chance, don? and heightened level of a awareness. thank you, rene marsh. i want to bring a panel, sarah chopnick who was on a flight that was diverted sunday and you were on a plane from orlando to los angeles, and you were diverted because of a threat by isis, and what happened? >> well, the pilot came on and he said that we have to make an emergency landing in dallas because of a security threat. we have been informed ta that we have a threat the plane, i went to twitter and typed in the
7:04 pm
flight number, and it said that there was a bomb threat on delta flight 1061 so i knew what the threat was, and what delta was looking at. >> and this is the tweet. it say s thas that we planted explosives on flight 1061 heading to orlando, and the soldiers are waiting for signal. what did you think when you saw that and did you share it with the passengers? >> well, the guy sitting next to me, and we looked at a it and ed aed a itt it, and we said, this is not just aviation in general, but our specific flight, and it is alarming to see not only the flight number but the path and everything that it was so specific to know, and i think that most of the people on the flight actually knew about the tweet and had read the tweet before we had even landed. >> listen were people remaining calm and what did the pilots
7:05 pm
say? >> the pilot said that we had received a threat via social media, and he told us that before we landed, and he said it was not a mechanical or technical issue, but a threat that we had received and that is why we needed to land the plane, and that it was a security issue, and everyone kind of remained kind of calm which is surprising in that situation. i think that everyone was internally very anxious, but on the outside remained calm until we touched down. >> all right. sarah, thank you, i want to get to jeff. 52 threats in the last two weeks, and how do you decide which ones to take seriously with so many planes in the air? >> well it is difficult, and you take every one of them seriously, and we start with a that but what is difficult to decide is this a real threat and to what level do we e respond? well there are internal procedures that the airlines and the tsa will take to vet the threats to determine if it is a
7:06 pm
real deal or not. and as you mentioned earlier, nobody wants to be wrong. so oftentimes you are going to overare respond rather than under respond. >> and here sis a tweet sent yesterday. i have a massive semi nuclear exploe explosive on board flight 4200 from san diego to dallas. if this fails, i will shoot the plane down. and if the threats are made via social media, can the law enforcement trace them back via ip address or some means? >> that is the game here shgs, and some people are aware that there is a whole part of the internet that is very difficult to track people, and there is a certain browsers that are made to enter those parts of the internet, and that is part of the cyber detective game that we are playing now, ard for every ability to hide on the internet, there is a counter ability to the find a perp on the internet. so it is law enforcement at a whole another level with the
7:07 pm
cyber security and trying to track people who don't want to be found. so it is going to be taking more advance ss in technology, and law enforcement, and every time we come up with something to find them they come up with someplace else to hide. >> thank you, jeff price, and sarah chovnick. and there are fewer targets that on the super bowl. jeh johnson says that there is no credible threat but what will it take to keep everybody safe. and rachel blackhawk helicopters, and truck-sized x-rays and take us through the extreme security measures for everybody entering phoenix stadium sunday? >> yes, don. it is a huge coordination of agencies and the blackhawk held kopt ers that you mentioned, those are from the u.s. border patrol. they are also borrowing some of the tsa folk and the screening
7:08 pm
equipment to work the doors. 3,000 phoenix police, and 4,000 private security here, and there is regular bomb sniffing dog, and nuclear bomb sniffing dog, and by the way, t the federal air marshals are loaning the personnel who are called the behavioral specialist and people are walking around the area looking strange, they are supposed to recognize them. >> and none theless, you can see that getting ready for the activities there, and there is a little bit of the celebration going on behind rachel. and so today, homeland director jeh johnson said this about the security for the super bowl, and let's listen. >> i think that the key is vigilance, and we have devoted a lot of resources and a lot of effort to making sure that this event is safe and secure. >> we we have 24 expert work groups that have thought of everything from cyber crimes to intelligence analysis and everything else. we are e preparer eare e pre -- we
7:09 pm
are e prepared. >> and it is expected that 72 million people are will be watching and it is important to mote that there are no significant threats detected. >> no credible threat. but any time you gather people for the super bowl and the most high profile event in the country, it is a level one target and you can tell by the numb number of things a that they are bring into the area. everything that we mentioned before and oh by the way, there is also bionet detectors, and talking about a range from nuclear to on the ground and by the way, you can bring a lot of things into the stadium and no backpacks or purses or drones, and i don't know if that is a pushback pr what happened at the white house, don. >> a lot to deal with here rachel. appreciate you joining us and standby. joining us is bob bair and
7:10 pm
homeland security juliette kayyem, and juliette i hate to say, but the superr bowl is a big target and how do you prevent a lone wolf there? >> well, it is not perfect but so much security preparation has been done before the super bowl, and it is a known date and known place, and those are two variables that are great for the security planning. it has been designated a national security special event which is going to allow the deployment of all of the federal resources that we heard in the segment before. it requires a coordination of the local state, and federal law enforcement, and first responders which has bneen ongoing, and essentially for the last six to nine months and as far as planning goes this is where public safety does know how the function well because they have a place and a date. it also means however a lot of people are watching and
7:11 pm
spectators and there is a lot of people disturbing people out there and so you are constantly balancing the two needs between throwing a big party, throwing a big sporting event, and also ensuring the safety and security of people there, and a constant balance. >> and it is adding a whole other level on top of it. how do they determine if a tweeted threat the super bowl is a real thing, juliette some. >> well, there is a number of resources right nouw that are monitoring twitter and twitter feed to determine who is a jokester or should we be more concerned about someone. law enforcement is then deployed to assess who the person is and if it seems like a credible threat. the london olympics ended up being a great test study in this regard and the london olympics had 20,000 to some odd disruption and we have learned
7:12 pm
how the to protect themselveses and to learn who is doing what. this is just the fay chur of the big events and that is why you will see jeh johnson the secretary of homeland security of leaning forward and saying we have got this given the number of people and over 1 billion watching sunday night. >> and bob, i want to talk about the message reportedly from isis, and it is released and i can't confirm the awe then theticity, but it is a new deadline and it is 9:30 a.m. eastern tomorrow for killing a jordanian pilot as well as a second japanese hostage if jordan does not release a female terrorist, and they said they will swap her for the pilot if isis can prove they are still alive. is a hostage swap a good idea? >> well i think so don. the pilot was from a major
7:13 pm
tribe, and the tribal groups in jordan are reluctant about this war in syria and iraq and supporting the united states and if he needs their support to swap that prisoner for the pilot hostage, he should do it. and we shouldn't say anything about it. these are internal politic, and we should not get involved in it and it, and we should not deal with the terrorists but the islamic state is this in between terrorism, and the islamic state, and so exception ss could be made. >> and bob, some say this sets a bad precedent? >> well, it does but the problem is the islamic state owns territory the and it is a criminal state or terror state if you like and it is a little bit like korea, and dealing with a rogue state is not a good idea, and the islamic state is worse, but we have to hold the coalition together and if king abdullah says to swap
