convicted terrorist if their pilot is freed. here is more. >> reporter: the sunset deadline set by isis is passed but the fates of their captives remain unknown. and crucially the terror group is yet to mean jordan's demand for proof that their pilot is still alive. >> at this point we want to emphasize that we have asked for a proof of life from them and we have not received anything as of yet. we need a proof of life. >> reporter: today's deadline is the third that isis has set in little more than a week. the wait began with this video showing two japanese hostages. >> to the prime minister of japan. >> and making the outrageous demand for a $200 million ransom within 72 hours or both would die. grim proof followed that one

hostage had been executed. this image showed one holding a photo of what appeared to be the other headless body. >> they are reacting tactically. they no longer have a strategic plan. i think they have been hurt in terms of their leadership. >> days later, a change in demands. isis now seeking the release of this convicted female jihadi in prison for a suicide bombing that killed dozens. and isis added a new threat. if the swap was not made the pilot would die as well. >> there's a huge difference between a prisoner swap between warring factions and a ransom question request. >> finally isis issued a new ultimatum.

have these two hostages threatening to execute both of them. what we know is the sunset deadline it did expire and there was no prisoner exchange. their fighter pilot, i should say, when he's fighter jet went down. now, the jordanians have made it clear that they are wanting him back alive. isis is merely saying that you hand back the suicide bomber this 46-year-old iraqi woman who as we heard was part of the 2005 suicide bombings in jordan. her vest failed to detonate. she was sentenced to death but

has been in prison for the last ten years. the plan was to exchange her for the japanese journalist and spare the life of the fighter pilot. we don't know whether both of those would be released. that has not been made clear. we haven't yet heard from isis today. there have been no new postings on youtube or twitter. >> with again this is another family that is hoping and praying for the best and not just the jordanian pilot and the japanese family. have they had anything to say in the last few hours and days? >> you can only imagine it must be absolute agony for these families. the father of the fighter pilot, he made a statement shortly after sunset saying pleading really with the terrorists to

save his son's life and that he will be in gratitude to them if they do so. we then heard from one wife. and she posted an audio reporting. she spoke in english and she pleaded to the japanese and jordanian governments to do everything they possibly can to secure the release of her husband. and i want to read you a very personal message that she made to the terrorists. she said my husband and i have two very young daughters. our baby girl was only three weeks old when kenji left. i want them both to grow up knowing their father. my husband is a good and honest man who went to syria to show the plight of those who suffer. obviously that heartfelt appeal

it's a tenuous situation and we have been going through a roller coaster up and down hearing that he might have been released and then not released and maybe he is going to be and then yesterday with the sunset you know we have just been waiting to hear the good news. he always put others before himself. he was a very quiet and modest man. i don't think he would have left with a 3 week old baby into the situation had he not felt that he could get out and show the plight of the people of syria. it wasn't his first time in syria. so i think he knew the risks, but as any of your journalists know that going into any of these zones there is a danger and you know he took this danger with responsibility and

also he always put others before himself. and that's just kenji. he was very selfless in his work. >> isis had originally demanded $200 million for the two. >> in egypt, reports that at least 26 people were killed. dozens wounded when multiple bombings and mortar attacks targeted security forces and a hotel. a group pledging allegiance to isis is claiming responsibility for the attacks. egypt's army has struggled to crush the militant insurgency in this particular region which at times this insurgency has expanded to mainland cities including cairo. three americans and an afghan were killed in a shooting thursday at the airport in kabul.

it's unclear whether the afghan was the shooter or the victim but the taliban has since claimed responsibility. a u.s. official says it appears to be an attack from the inside. >> in mexico city officials believe they have accounted for everyone inside a maternity hospital when it was levelled by a gas explosion. a nurse described it as a nightmare. hospital workers pulled babies and others from the rubble. we learn more from rosa florez at the scene. >> reporter: a maternity hospital in mexico city's southwest side turned into a death trap when an explosion sent debris flying into the air. take a look. you will see police officers setting up a perimeter protecting the scene this is a very active scene. you can see that a truck is going to be pulling behind me very soon. but take a close look at the

hospital. you see a pile of debris front loaders that have been working around the clock. we have seen volunteers going in with shovels, picks, axes sifting through some of that debris. here is what we know from authorities. a gas delivery truck that entered the hospital where you see this truck right now was there to refill the butane tank at the hospital. a hose busted triggering the explosion and collapsing about 70% of the building. now here's the other thing that we know from authorities. at least three people are dead at least one of those is a child. more than 60 others are injured. and hear this. at least 20 of those could be children. as for the operators of this delivery truck, all three of them are injured and all three have been arrested. as for the company that they work for, they have released a

statement saying that they are cooperating with authorities. again, this is a very active scene as you can see and police playing a pivotal role securing the scene. rosa florez cnn, megs co-city. >> since rosa filed that report the death toll has climbed to three including a nurse and two infants. 73 others are being treated for injuries but it's remarkable that most of the people that were in that hospital survived. >> well in the netherlands, a bizarre situation at a television station. a gunman got into the studio of a national television broadcaster. the station went off the air and all the employees who could evacuated the building. a few minutes later, police stormed the studio and ordered the gunman to drop his weapon. he did. he had reportedly demanded air time although it's not clear

what he wanted to say. but all is safe there. south korea is fascinated by what has come to be known as nut rage. it is the trial of an airline executive's daughter who you may recall had an airplane change course because of the way her nuts were served. we will go live to see what's next in the chapter of nut rage.

hezbollah leader is expected to give a speech in the coming hours addressing the latest tensions among the israel lebanon border. it follows an attack that killed two israeli soldiers. despite strong condemnation it appears both sides are ready to stand down. here is more. >> it's being described as a message of strength. they have received from hezbollah a message to deescalate through the usual non-official channels of the u.n. peace keeping force here in lebanon. when we get these tit for at the attacks it conjures up the perspective of the lebanon war. it did seem to have all of the hallmarks. israel striking killing hezbollah fighters and an iranians guard commander, hezbollah striking back killing

and wounding israeli soldiers. israel launching air strikes inside syria. but now it appears to be a fork in the path. an opportunity to turn back. and there definitely seems to be a sense of a deescalation in the tensions. we won't really get a sense of exactly what has happened. >> the ceo of korean air is set to take the stand this hour in what has come to be known as the nut rage trial. his daughter forced an airline to return to a gate after she was served nuts in a bag and not on a plate. let's bring in paula with more on the media attention to this story and to the trial.

>> you can see behind me there are a few cameras. the media attention has been phenomenal. her nut were not served on a plate but in a bag. she is actually charged with obstructing aviation security. now if found guilty the maximum term in prison would be ten years. we have seen in the past few minutes the korean air chairman and her father arriving in court. he is going to be testifying this friday as well. and over the past hour or so we have been hearing from the flight attendant.

she said that she shanked it at her, swore at her, pushed her and threw the manual which was in a tablet pc form and ordered her off the plane. it was the chief steward who was eventually taken off the plane or pushed off the plane rather. we understand that he has not talked to court at this point. the prosecutors, you have the korean air chairman in front of them will be asking him what exactly happened after the event. the flight attendant has alleged in court that she was asked to lie by korean air. she was told that she should not mention that she was pushed. clearly she has not done that in front of the judge and also many

factors that could help hernandez. >> well i will tell you, what was originally about a month or six weeks ago thought to be a slam dunk prosecution case does not appear to be today. several -- there are several reasons for that. number one the judge has excluded any mention or use by the prosecution of the other two murders that he is charged with and number two, there was a text message from the deceased in which he said i'm with nfl, presumably referring to hernandez. that's been excluded as well. given that and the fact and i think most significantly and the fact that he's not being tried -- this trial does not have the other two gentlemen who are charged with murder there in the courtroom with him, i think that given the jury make-up, he's got a fighting chance in this case. and i like the jury make-up from a defense standpoint. >> testimony continues today. jurors set to hear from several key witnesses including the

no developments yet in this saga. the death toll in mexico city has climbed to three in a gas explosion that levelled a maternity hospital thursday. a nurse and two infants were killed. 73 others injured including about 20 newborns. the president visited survivors in the hospital. the explosion was apparently triggered by a leaking hose on a gas delivery truck. three american contractors and an afghan national were killed in a shooting at the airport in kabul, afghanistan. it is unclear still whether the afghan was the shooter or the victim. the taliban has since claimed responsibility. a u.s. official says it appears to be an insider attack. our top story again, the hostage crisis involving japan, jordan and isis a terror group. sit a story that brings together two countries, a terrorist

organization three people from different worlds. a fighter pilot, a journalist on a mission in syria to find his friend and a would be suicide bomber on death row. cnn's anderson cooper picks up the story from there. >> the prisoner swap story really begins here in 2005. three hotels were torn apart by suicide bombers. in this one a wedding reception was underway the photo taken moments before the bride and groom were seriously injured. in all, 57 people were killed in the three attacks. two of the bombers were husband and wife. the wife survived. my husband detonated his bomb she says, and i tried to set off mine but failed. an iraqi was captured in the aftermath. she had been sent by al qaeda and iraq the group that would eventually morph into i-sis.

she has been on death row ever since in october last year japanese journalist kenji goto traveled to syria to investigate the disappearance of another man. goto was eventually captured. a supporter showed this image of goto in chains holding an image of what appears to be a headless body. >> i beg the japanese government to understand that the fate of these men are in their hands. >> in late december jordanian pilot was captured by isis. he was involved in air strikes in northern syria when he crashed the plane. this half naked picture of him wasry leased. three people from different places now part of the same very

dangerous story. >> anderson cooper reporting there. this would be just the latest high profile prisoner swap in years. in 2011 israeli soldier was released after being held for more than five years by hamas. more than 1,000 palestinian prisoners were released in that deal by israel. the deal to free bowe bergendahl is facing new scrutiny. here is how the white house is reacting.

>> it's happened before but this time it is politically charged. the u.s. believes one of the five beganguantanamo bay detainees sent to gaqatar that one of them may be returning to a militant lifestyle. apparently something popped up that is causing concern that one of the men may have been reaching out to militants and that would be against the regulations that the u.s. set to monitor these men and release them back to qatar. so there is a good deal of concern about all of this. right now the question is of course how much of a threat does this pose? some officials say not a direct threat but i will tell you other u.s. officials telling me there is a difference of opinion inside the administration that there is some opinion that this

is a very serious matter. >> bar rah star reporting there from the pentagon for us. the wife of a jailed blogger faces a punishment of 1,000 lashes. the wife said thursday that she fears her husband won't survive. he is a prominent online activists arrested in 2012 and charged with insulting islam online. in addition to the lashes he was sentenced to ten years in prison last year. his family has since left saudi arabia for canada. that's why his wife joined lawmakers to ask for an end to the flogging. >> we are asking the saudi arabian government to live up to its own obligations that it itself has assumed as a state party to the convention op the prohibition of torture to a member of the international community who joined in the

argentina argentina, nisman is here. the roads are lined with police. people wait with flowers and signs as the procession nears the jewish cemetery. the procession is aliving here outside of buenos aries. nisman's body was found with a .22 caliber gun by his side just hours before a congressional hearing where he was going to present evidence that had been covered up in the bombing. police initially said that nisman's death appeared to be a suicide but most say they don't believe it. many turned out for the funeral procession. the president of the country has further confused matters by appearing with a string of

two tech companies are in the spotlight after issuing quarterly earnings. it appears the holidays were very kind to amazon but google? not so much. >> reporter: amazon investors were in no mood for nasty surprises. results for amazon have been dismal and shares have suffered. the internet giant posted its first profit in three quarters earning 45 cents a share. that trumped expectations of 18 cents a share. revenue came in a bit below expectations but sales still grew in the quarter thanks to strong holiday sales. hef news would have been better had it not been for the effects of the stronger u.s. dollar. a big contributor to profits, strong demand for amazon prime.

membership grew 53% last quarter and since the company has begun charging more for prime that extra cash is starting to help boost results. amazon's guidance for this current quarter is a bit below expectations but investors are ignoring that for now. shares rose strongly in afterhours trading. google isn't faring as well. they had another quarter of disappointing results for hef knew and earnings per share. society's move to mobile is hurting them. the amount of clicks on ads is increasing on google the amount that companies are willing to pay to put their a ads on mobile is much less than they had paid on desktops. strong areas continue to be youtube and google play. have a great day. >> if you have google earth, you might see some snow over japan.
