12:02 am
12:03 am
a gruesome thought. these two hostages are being paraded now for days on social media. we have been hearing that japanese journalists who really have been the mouthpiece for isis in recent days for them to be executed look we just doentd know. what we do know is that sunset this is when isis said this prisoner exchange had to happen. the jordanians said we need proof of life that our fighter pilot, this 26-year-old jordanian fighter pilot that he is in fact alive. well isis has refused to do that. there has been no communication whatsoever from isis. certainly not today and not
12:04 am
since that sunset deadline expired. remember that isis has continued to change the demands, change the deadlines initially? then this female attempted suicide bomb erer they decided to make her a pawn in all of this saying she had to be released to save the life of kenji goto. and suddenly the fighter pilot is brought in as well saying that he would be executed as well. no clarification as to what the status is at the moment. the government is obviously working extremely hard to try to
12:05 am
secure the release. it's the first time that a sovereign government has negotiated so pubically. it has been done in the past behind closed doors but never in this open forum which it is being done at the moment. >> and we still standby and wait for an update to see exactly what is the fate of the hostages right now. anna just past 4:00 in the afternoon in hong kong we appreciate the update. natalie? >> there are concerns. one of five taliban militants released by the u.s. in exchange for a u.s. army soldier has tried to return to militant activity in qatar. the deal to free bowe berg dahl was controversial from the start. they received assurances that their actions would be monitored. a spokesman says communication with qatar continues.

>> we take issues of reengagement very, very seriously and reengagement could mean a lot of things. it doesn't necessarily have to mean a return to the battlefield. when we considered the engagement we work closely with agencies and law enforcement and intelligence look at what was left of it it's amazing that so

many people survived. >> that's true. >> but the deaths are a nurse and two infants killed in this blast. more than 100 people were in the building at the time. >> the president visited survivors in the hospital. officials believe everyone who was inside during the explosion is now accounted for. >> a nurse who survived the blast described it as a nightmare. rescue workers scramble to pull babies and their mothers and the hospital personnel from the rubble as flames engulfed the entire facility. the explosion apparently triggered by a leaking hose on a gas delivery truck. cnn was at the scene. >> you see police officers
12:08 am
setting up a perimeter protecting the scene. this is a very active scene. orities. a gas delivery truck that entered the hospital where you see this truck right now was there to refill the butane tank at the hospital. a hose busted triggering the explosion and collapsing about 70% of the building. now here is the other thing that we know from authorities. at least three people are dead. at least one of those is a child. more than 60 others are injured and hear this. at least 20 of those could be children. as for the operators of this
12:09 am
delivery truck, all three of them are injured and all three have been arrested. as for the company that they work for, they have released a statement saying that they are cooperating with authorities. again this is a very active scene as you can see, and police playing a pivotal role securing the scene. or prosecutors. we will go inside this case. >> plus we are expecting key testimony today in the trial of a south korean woman who caused quite a scene on a plane over

>> as the nfl new england patriots make final preps for the super bowl one former player aaron hernandez is sitting in a massachusetts jail cell on trial for murder. >> nfl analysts called hernandez a rising star in the few years he was in the leg. that was until he was arrested in june of 2013 and charged in the slaying of his former
12:13 am
friend. thursday marked the beginning of his long anticipated murder trial. >> if convicted, hernandez could face life in prison. >> in opening statements lawyers for hernandez cut to the chase. >> prosecutors accuse hernandez of orchestrating oden lloyd's murder shot six times execution style in an industrial park. co-defendants have pleaded not guilty and are being tried separately.
12:14 am
>> there is where he was shot six times. he was killed and left -- >> the gruesome details and crime scene photos too painful for lloyd's mother who breaks down in tears, briefly leaving the courtroom. d, they say the suspected murder weapon that has never been found. >> in the course of this trial you will hear from a representative who will tell you
12:15 am
that that appearance is unique. >> as hernandez rocks side to side in his chair, defense lawyers fight back. suggesting to jurors that the object might be an iphone or ipad and asking if hernandez committed murder, why is that video still exist? >> the evidence will show that if aaron hernandez wanted to destroy the recordings he could have. but he did not. >> defense attorneys say that hernandez would pay lloyd to buy him marijuana. >> he was known as the blunt master. >> cnn obtained this photo showing blunts made by lloyder if hernandez. a joint was found next to lloyd's body, something that links the victim and his alleged
12:16 am
killer. >> that joint is analyzed and determined to have lloyd's dna. >> by law, prosecutors don't have to provide a motive but they hinted at one claiming that hernandez was angry over an argument two nights earlier but defense attorneys say it's not true. >> ladies and gentlemen, the evidence will show there was no reason, there was no motive. aaron hernandez did not murder his friend. >> susan candiodia, fall river, massachusetts. >> and >> cnn legal analyst gave his thoughts about this trial to us and he believes there are some factors that could help hernandez. >> well, i will tell you, what was originally about a month or six weeks ago thought to be a slam dunk prosecution case does
12:17 am
not appear to be today. several -- there are several reasons for that. number one the judge has excluded any mention or use by the prosecution of the other two murders that he is charged with and number two, there was a text message from the deceased in which he said i'm with nfl, presumably referring to hernandez. that's been excluded as well. given that and the fact and i think most significantly and the fact that he's not being tried -- this trial does not have the other two gentlemen who are charged with murder there in the courtroom with him, i think that given the jury make-up, he's got a fighting chance in this case. and i like the jury make-up from a defense standpoint. >> testimony continues today. jurors set to hear from several key witnesses including the victim's mother. aaron hernandez has pleaded not guilty. >> and the jury make-up is
12:18 am
mostly female. >> and that could also possibly work in hernandez's favor. we will find out. people across south korea are fascinated by nut rage quite frankly, so are we. the trial of an airline executive's daughter whose macadamia nuts were served incorrectly. >> and she had the plane turn around because of that. we will tell you now what she is charged with and we will have a live report on it from seoul. but there is hope. getting my hair back was the best thing that ever happened to me. i'm happy with the way i look now. i'm very excited about my hair. i feel beautiful. i love my hair. safety laws and hindering an investigation. >> this case has captured the attention of people in south korea. you saw the media attention there. paula, you wonder what exactly the ceo will say today and how if at all he will explain his daughter's actions on that day. >> he has taken the stand. we have heard from him and he basically said that he apologizes for what happened. he said that he scolded his daughter for not being able -- >> seems as though we're having a bit of audio difficulty there with paula hancock saying that the ceo of korean air did in fact take the stand today. the trial is ongoing at this hour. apologized for his daughter's actions and said also that he scolded his daughter his daughter did have an executive position within the company
12:22 am
although the day that she forced the plane to go back to the gate because of the nut incident she was not traveling in an official capacity. we will continue to follow developments here and connect with paula later today. natalie? >> we move on to egypt where a group pledging allegiance to isis is claiming responsibility for deadly attacks. >> that's right this is the most sophisticated coordinated attack that we have seen spanning across three cities.
12:23 am
then this attack they used car bombs and mortars. what we're hearing also is that there was a fire fight between security forces and the militants. this group has released a lot of videos showing their propaganda and attacks, also releasing a video showing the weapons that they take from these attacks and just hours before it took place they also released pictures still images of their militants in battle gear with machine guns and rocket propelled grenaded. i counted about 25 militants in those pictures. this is the deadliest attack in northern sigh nigh since last august when 31 soldiers have been killed. as this group grows more sfis --

>> ian with the late fres egypt in the siani peninsula. >> the ceo of psychiatryian air just addressed this massive incident. he admitted he scolded his daughter. what else did the ceo have to say? >> because she couldn't control her emotions and this couldn't have and shouldn't have happened. he said he was going to improve the corporate culture.
12:25 am
r to try to see that this story didn't get to this point. even though there are people around the world laughing it does have serious repercussions. this former vice president of korean air is on trial and she is standing charge of obstructing aviation security. just earlier today we heard from the attendant who actually served her the nuts in a bag and not on a plate. this lady called kim at this point, not being identified by
12:26 am
us and she said that she was pushed by heather cho. she was sworn at and also she was ordered off the plane as well even though she didn't actually get off the plane. korean air had asked her to not -- to lie effectively. this is what prosecutors are getting at. not just the security aspect of what heather did but also whether or not this very powerful family and very powerful company tried to cover up things after the event. >> glad we got paula hancock's report. thanks very much. now new england residents will have to keep their super bowl festivities inside this winter.

>> the explosion was apparently triggered by a leaking hose on a gas delivery truck. >> the murder trial for former nfl player aaron hernandez is underway in massachusetts. he is accused of orchestrating, participating in and covering up the killing of his former friend in 2013. the victim's mother is set to testify later today. >> isis forces have launched an assault on an area just outside the oil rich iraqi city of kirkuk. a top military leader was killed in this attack. at this point we want to bring in a press course upon dant.
12:33 am
i know this is a developing story. certainly a major note that a top curdish leader has been killed. what more can you tell us about what has happened. lved in that attack have been moved to this abandoned hotel. there are some reports that they have been killed by security forces. >> in this incident we're speaking of a car bomb suicide

bombers, militants who took over an abandoned hotel who try to use it as police headquarters. kirkuk is a place that kurdish fighters are celebrating the release of those who had been stranded for so long. what can you tell us about what this means about isis being able to launch such a coordinated attack against the militant group. t to potential

in lebanon. so once that happens we will get a better sense of where we stand. but so far it does seem that it's much quieter. there doesn't seem to be any indication that this is going to be something to spiral into something worse. >> definitely good news. thanks so much. still to come here. all those on board missing flight mh 370 from last march are now officially classified as presumed dead. >> officials have just given an update on a jet that vanished without a trace almost ten months ago. more on that after this.
12:40 am
12:41 am
>> civil aviation officials have give an news briefing to update the search that still goes on for this airplane. >> he has insights about that briefing. >> this official declaration brings them no peace because there is still a mystery about what happened to their loved ones. what is the latest that their investigation is saying if anything. >> well natalie, what they're say something they will complete their search of the 60,000 square kilometer area. so far they have not located it. there is very strong reason to believe it is in that area.
12:42 am
and there is also the very real responsibility they may not find it. i think it's important not to assume wild conspiracy theories because the aircraft has not been found. it's an enormous task. >> let's remind our viewers what the last traces of this plane were it deviated from its path disappeared from radar. and then satellite confirmed that the engines continued for several hours. the aircraft disappeared last year. i went on record saying they were searches in the wrong
12:43 am
place. the reason for that is that from the data that was given out it was clear that the malaysian authorities were embellishing and guilting to say that the information that i had to indicate that the aircraft had been taken mishly hijacking. they clearly had been you know misinterpreting the data that they had. assuming that the aircraft had a technical problem, the pilots would have wanted to return which meant they flew a reciprocal tract. when the inmar satellite indicated that it was indeed in that area then that lended credence to that theory.
12:44 am
the pings should really be plotted to see if that flight path was possible. >> and lastly what are they using right now to search for this airplane? >> well it is primarily underwater camera search. the radio beacon from the two black boxes will have -- the batteries will have died months ago. it is purely visual. it is a long drawn out affair at great depth. it takes time to lower their remotely controlled vehicles. it is going to make it really
12:45 am
difficult. there would be large parts to find if they have metal detection devices. i'm not privy to the exact devices that they are using but that is what is being done. it is a systematic search of the sea bad in the most likely area where the aircraft lies. >> you have got to feel for these families that still have not one answer really to what happened. thank you as always. >> i think we are due for it at this hour. the world's worst ebola outbreak on record seems to be slowing. the number of new infections fell to their lowest level
12:46 am
meanwhile in the u.s. a patient suspected of being infected with ebola is now in a special isolation unit. it's not clear yet if that patient traveled to west africa recently. at least ten people have been treated in the u.s. since the outbreak began. >> and the u.s. is having an outbreak of its own. since the first of january, there have been 84 cases reported in 14 states according to the u.s. scepters for disease control, most of the cases linked to disneyland in california. there were more than 600 measles cases in 2014. compare that to less than 100 cases annually in recent years. >> they are saying that one of the reasons is that fewer parents are going in for vaccinations. >> controversial topic there.
12:47 am
>> we have had snow in the northeast united states and snow in the uk. >> it has been interesting across the world to say the least. >> our meteorologist joins us all the time just pops up. >> thank you very much. >> here is here to talk about the weather. they have had some significant snowfall closing both runways causing the scenes just like this to deice the plane. look at the snowfall totals. we have had upwards of 24 centimeters in northern ireland. parts of england, 16 to 20 centimeters of snowfall. this is between a wednesday and thursday time frame. it's not all bad.
12:48 am
300 schools were actually closed on thursday thanks to our fresh fallen snow and the kiddies getting outdoors and taking advantage of some of the fresh powder on the ground going sledding in england. why all of this active weather? we have got a big dip in the jet stream causing chilly temperatures. lots of wet weather expected to continue right into the early weekend for the mediterranean. that includes you if you're located in rome. but we have had good news for skiers and snow borders. i like to see him like this. that is snowfall settling into the region in switzerland and the al pps. the powder keeps totaling. so fresh powder for everybody hitting the slopes this weekend and into early next week.
