four cities in the path of this storm, chicago, cleveland, boston and new york. it's chicago that's feeling the brunt of it today. blizzard conditions that could rival some of the city's biggest snowfalls. we have full coverage. our national correspondent ryan young is in chicago. martin savidge in cleveland and tom joins us from the severe weather center. ryan i always say this. it's best when you're first assignment at cnn is in a blizzard because then you really know what you're in for.cn. how cnn. how is it looking? >> reporter: i've never felt a blizzard before. we've been up since 3:45 amtraking the storm. the conditions have gotten worse. i want to point down this direction. you can see some of the guys trying to clean the side streets here. they done a good job keeping the

roads open. all public transportation is still running. there are more than 300 trucks out on the road trying to employee the roads here. we also learned more than 15,000 people are without power. you can imagine the temperature starting to drop and it's getting cold. you can see the snow blowing sideways at this point. it pelts you in the face. they want to make sure the roads are ready for tomorrow. school will happen. not only will school happen people will be able to get to work. we've seen people all day like this gentleman just walking through the snow saying this is not too bad. they are getting as much snow today as they got all last month. a major snow event. >> when it comes to the airports i've heard it's pretty much a nightmare at o'hare. >> reporter: a nightmare over 1100 flights cancelled. you know how important that airport is to the entire nation. you can imagine the business travelers that will be affected.

with all this snow flowing you never know what's going to happen tomorrow with everybody trying to get out of certain places in the midwest. >> i'll tell you, i grew up in the snow for many many years in minnesota. you'll get used to it. it takes about five or ten years so good luck. >> reporter: everybody in chicago says this is not too bad. >> thank you so much. stay warm. let's go to northern ohio. they are feeling the force of the storm. marty is there in cleveland, his hometown. you were not going to go cover this blizzard. >> reporter: i'm not sure what happened but here i am. great to be back home. that's for certain. cleveland is no chicago, at least when it comes to the weather. like chicago, they're probably dealing with the worst snowfall of this winter season so far. we still got a long way to go. they got about five inches on the ground. it's really pretty. this is where it's a pretty

snowfall. the trees are coated with it. the streets look nice. this is the hour where things are beginning to turn. the amount of snow expected, nine inches or so. we can go from pretty to pretty miserable. it's expected from this point on through the night the most intense snowfall will happen. the streets are snow covered on the square. highs are slushy to wet. it's tricky out there. right now it's sunday super bowl most folks are staying home, staying safe. cleveland not so bad. western ohio facing the conditions that ryan was seeing in chicago. a snow emergency level three. that's toledo. they're expecting a foot of snow. the wind is starting to pick up. >> of course it's beautiful there and people there are used to the snow. i worry about folks after the

super bowl driving home late at night. are the officials warning people in terms of being really careful when driving? >> reporter: they have been. they've been telling people even in the daytime they've been encouraging people to turn their lights on. be aware the it's treacherous out here. maybe it's not the blizzard of the century but if you've stayed out late it snowed while you were inside. the conditions changed. be aware of that. be careful. take that extra measure of care. >> thanks. appreciate it. city's farther east are bracing for their second big snowstorm in a week. boston hometown to the new england patriots expected to get up to a foot of snow late tonight after the super bowl. boston public schools already closed for tomorrow. new york city where i am also preparing for this storm. the storm could create a nightmare in terms of the condition in new york city beginning late tonight. we got this warning from the mayor earlier today.

>> for anyone leaving super bowl parties, you're going to have to be ready to be careful at that point. you could have some beginning of accumulation snow. you could have clip ri driving conditions. i want to urge people to think ahead, have a designated driver. don't drink and drive under any circumstance but not on a night where it could be snowy and icy. >> the temperatures have already plummeted here out east. take a look at these firefighters. this picture i saw this morning and i found it incredible. these are firefighters that were battling a huge blaze in brooklyn yesterday. it was so freezing you can see what happened. it's just as cold today. let's get a look at the big picture of this storm with me. cnn meteorologist. a hundred people people affected by this storm. how is it going to get so bad and what hours are we talking

about where people need to be particularly careful? >> this is an elongated storm. it's unlike like week's nor'easter where half as many people were affected. there's a variety of weather going on here. the blizzard warning is because winds were up to 35. the employeeing snow visibilities dropped. it's a drier snow. you get closer down to where it changes over to rain or that ice line. this is the heavier snowfall. it's a variety. notice columbus pittsburgh in the adviceseory or just below. new york is in the warning. boston too. let's break it down. chicago already some areas. 11 12 13 even 14". if you get 14 in o'hare that will break your top ten greatest snows. indianapolis has been right at

freezing mark. they've seen a bit of a mix. columbus you're above freezing. pittsburgh you're at 33. doesn't mean you're not going to see any snow because the wrap around cold air will give you a blast behind it which could drop a dusting to an inch. if you have heavy rain it will wash off the salt. washington, d.c. you're all rainfall. philadelphia maybe a dusting before it changes over. new york, this is interesting. around midnight hour you'll get into the snowfall. around 4 or 5:00 it changes to an icy mix for your morning rush. then it briefly goes over to rain. again, everything is just crazy. on cape cod you go to rain. that's great for nantucket. in boston you're looking at a foot. that goes over to detroit, cleefds. the cleveland. interior sections of new

condition of whitney houston's daughter, bobbikristina. she was found unresponsive in a bathtub by her husband. i know you just severreceived some new information about her condition. >> reporter: we have known she was in this medically induced coma but a source says that bobbi kristina is in the intensive care unit. her condition has been stabilized. she's breathing with the use of a ventilator. we have received a statement from bobby brown, singer bobby brown in which he says privacy is requested this this matter. allow for my family to deal with this matter and give my daughter the love and support she needs at this time. obviously a very difficult time for mr. brown as well. >> i know there's been a lot of talk about how doctors are going to be able to measure her brain

function, her brain condition because she was found unresponsive. do we know anything about that if they're going to be reducing the medication at all? what the steps are going forward? >> reporter: they have to determine once the sedatives dissipate they will have to determine how much brain activity she has. tat relates to why they put her in the medically induced coma in the first place. a doctor told me this that when the brain is robbed of oxygen or blood for an extended period of time there's difficulty in getting blood to parts of the brain. they reduce the need for blood to get to all the parts of the brain by reducing the activity. that's why she's in this coma. sometimes people are in it for days weeks and in rare cases months. not many details coming from the hospital. a source tells sonni that this

peninsula. i think that would apply to jihadi john. the more he gets people to go to syria and join up gives him great value. >> the fight against isis is a fight not just in one place. it's a fight in iraq. many have said we're making much more headway in iraq than syria. are you concerned about the lack of ability to gather intelligence on isis in syria in particular? >> absolutely. we don't have the same extenseive networks to penetrate them. we had people in iraq. we don't have in place with handful of syrian fighters in syria. when you're not there or given sump a such a head start to place themselves in powerful position in syria and iraq you make it difficult to try to penetrate

hello, chicago. you got a lot of snow to deal with right now and the airport is an absolute nightmare. if you're watching us from chicago, stay in cozy up and enjoy the super bowl. also cleveland taking the brunt of this storm. the city could get up to half a foot of snow tonight alone. joining me on the phone dan williams. how you guys doing preparing for this storm? i know it's coming down heavy. >> it is. it's coming on and off kind of sporadic now. i think the snow started up a little while ago again. it was coming down pretty heavy earlier today around noon. >> what do we know about what you -- go ahead. >> i was going to say as far as preparation for the city this is cleveland. we do prepare well. last night and during the day today we had 20 crews on two

different shifts during the day today and last night in preparation for the snow that came this morning. tonight at 11:00 p.m. there will be 40 crews on throughout the night to make sure the roads remain clear. focus really is on the emergency routes first to make sure those remain clear for emergency response vehicles of those who need to respond across the city and those critical corridors. >> i think one of the big concerns is with the super bowl tonight. folks are going to be out at super bowl parties at the bars. many people will be drinking. what are you saying to people warning them about driving in these conditions when the snow will be coming down harder? >> people make decisions like that. in light of the weather i think they might use a little more caution. we're cautioning people to do

all right, all across the midwest and the northeast, 100 million people are in the path of a big winter storm. let's get an update on where the storm is now and where it is heading overnight from tom. how bad it is going to get, tom? already over a foot of snow in many locations. thousands of schools are closed already. the blizzard warning in chicago will run until midnight. the trickiest forecast though is new york city. the storm center is just now leaving illinois. it has several states to trek across. we think the snow moves in after the midnight hour in new york changes to a mix in the rush hour in the morning, then rain, which would be great. significant icing. models north of new york drop a quarter inch to half inch of ice. boston it's going to stay snow for you, schools already closed
