10:00 am
our viewers in the united states and around the world. we begin this hour with breaking news. pictures on an isis website appear to show a hostage burned alive while held in a cage. the video's horrific and cnn has decided we will not be showing any of these images. the hostage, moaz al kasasbeh a jordanian military fighter pilot captured last month after he ejected from his f-16 over syria. jordanian television now says he was killed a month ago, which intelligence officials have thought was certainly possible. jordan is of course a critical member of the u.s.-led coalition fighting isis right now. and jordan was one of the first nations to carry out air strikes against isis when the campaign began last september. isis threatened al kasasbeh if jordan refused to free a female jihadi convicted terrorist, sajida al rishawi, in a jordanian prison for her role in a suicide bombing in amman
10:01 am
jordan that left some 60 people dead and hundreds injured. the negotiations appeared to be going nowhere. moments ago, we heard from president obama reacting to the claims made by isis on the death of this 26-year-old jordanian pilot. >> i just got word of the video that had been released. i don't know the details of the confirmations. but should in fact this video be authentic, it's just one more indication of the viciousness and barbarity of this organization organization. and it i think, will redouble the vigilance and determination on the part of a global coalition to make sure that they are degraded and ultimately defeated. and it also just indicates the degree to which whatever
10:02 am
ideology they're operating off of it's bankrupt. >> strong words from the president of the united states. let's go to amman, jordan, right now. jomana is joining us, she's on the scene for us. we know that king abdullah of jordan he's here in washington right now, the foreign minister is here in washington. i anticipate we will be hearing directly from the king at some point shortly. but what's been the reaction in jordan so far? >> reporter: well wolf we heard from our team that is currently at this hall where the family and the tribe of moaz al kasasbeh have been gathering over the past couple of weeks. and they say the mood there is of anger and real frustration with what is going on. they're really disgusted by this. they say his immediate family his fathers and his brothers, have left to the hometown of moaz al kasasbeh in the south. but hundreds of people are now showing up in solidarity with
10:03 am
the family. of course there's a lot of concern about what kind of reaction are we going to be seeing. in the past week or so we had heard from the family, his tribe. this is an important tribe in jordan as you know the tribes are an important part of the jordanian society. they are the backbone of support of the jordanian monarchy. and they blamed the jordanian government of not trying to do enough to secure his release. there were calls on the government pressure to release that would-be -- that convicted would-be suicide bomber, sajida al rishawi. so we'll have to wait and see. all eyes right now are on the city of carak, south of amman, where the family, the tribe is from. and also here in amman, if there's any sort of protest, any sort of gatherings here this evening that we'll be keeping our eyes on. no official comment yet other than that urgent banner on jordanian state television
10:04 am
saying that moaz al kasasbeh was killed last month. >> yeah there was -- apparently the jordanian military quoted by official jordanian state television as saying he was, quote, martyred january 3rd if in fact that's true he was killed he was murdered butchered in such a criminal way as that video shows. then it clearly explains why there was no proof of life video released by isis in recent days as they were trying to negotiate. isis wanted this woman, this convicted terrorist, released. but jordan said they would be willing to engage in negotiations but they wanted proof of life. there was no proof of life. and the sense now, according to the jordanian military is he was actually dead, at least for a month. anything more on that, jomana? >> reporter: we're going to have to wait and see. we hear the jordanian military is going to be making a statement soon, within this hour possibly. but here's the thing, wolf. the jordanian government is
10:05 am
under a lot of pressure because we do not know what was going on in these indirect negotiations that they had been having with isis whether there had been any demands put forward for the release of moaz al kasasbeh. as you mentioned, as we know the only time he was mentioned when isis threatened to kill him unless a direct swap took place for the release of sajida rishawi in exchange for japanese hostage kenji goto. they said if that did not happen they would go ahead and kill moaz al kasasbeh. and of course the jordanian government said during the course of these negotiations they asked for proof of life. they did not get. we also heard them again at the end of last week also doing that publicly calling for that proof of life. so the jordanian government does seem to have known more than it was saying publicly something we'll wait and hear from them in the coming hours. >> it is brutal brutal video indeed. and it lasts for some 22 minutes as we said. we're not going to be showing it to our viewers here in the
10:06 am
united states and around the world. jomana we'll get back to you. i want to bring in our chief flalg correspondent, christiane amanpour, she's in london. paul cruickshank, bob baer and jim sciutto. jim, let me start with you. you're working your sources here in washington. i have been told for days if in fact there is video showing this jordanian pilot murdered jordan will respond very aggressively against isis. i don't know what they're going to do. but the anger is very intense right now. probably atypical because jordan is a relatively peaceful part of that very turbulent world. >> no question. there's been talk of retaliation in terms of executing some of the isis prisoners now in jordan even the possibility of this female failed suicide bomber that had been on the table, though not officially as a possible quid pro quo for the pilot, that among the possibilities. but certainly nothing confirmed. this is a real test for king
10:07 am
abdullah. does he respond in a firmer way, firmer commitment to the coalition or does he feel the pressure of a population which already to this point was uncomfortable with jordanian involvement in a campaign led by the u.s. against not just another muslim country but another sunni muslim country? this is a difficult thing for a middle eastern leader to do. keep in mind this, in the span of 72 hours, you had jordan and japan faced with the brutality of isis with populations at home that are uncomfortable with the involvement in this coalition and with leaders who have gone out on a limb abe in japan and the jordanian king. it's a real test for both leaders. >> kenji goto apparently beheaded by isis. and now the jordanian fighter pilot, moaz al kasasbeh burned to death in a brutal way, gasoline poured over his body in a cage and then he was lit. it's really, really disgusting.
10:08 am
christiane amanpour let's talk about what jordan presumably will be doing right now. the king, king abdullah, is here in washington. the foreign minister is here in washington. i assume they're both anxious to get back to jordan and take charge. >> well absolutely because this is a major test as we all know and we've all been saying. jordan has stood squarely with the united states and the western coalition against terrorism and particularly against isis. the test now for the king is will he make a national speech will he make a national address, to try to convince his people that it's more dangerous not to take them on than it is to take them on? if he doesn't take them on they will come into jordan's backyard. if you look around on the isis websites and all the rest of it and listen to their designs, they have designs on jordan. al qaeda has already, as we remember 2005 done a huge attack inside jordan. that woman, sajida was part of it. they killed more than 60 people at three hotels. so they have a lot of experience
10:09 am
with terrorism. they know the terrible destabilization that the war in syria has created, massive amounts of refugees. and it's very very unstable situation that they need to now try to resolve. i spoke to the foreign policy adviser to prime minister abe of japan who again said to me that even what happened to kenji goto that is not going to stop us going after these people. obviously japanese constitution doesn't allow for offensive military actions but he says they will absolutely keep supporting this fight against terror and they will keep funding refugees and others who are victims of it. clearly isis is trying to provoke any number of nations to stop participating. and so far, it is not having any success at doing that. and so far isis is also to an extent starting to be rolled back in very key areas on the ground whether it be kobani or up there in northern iraq. >> christiane, i want you to stand by.
10:10 am
everyone stand by. we're going to continue our breaking news coverage. we're standing by. we're getting more reaction to the murder the murder of this jordanian f-16 fighter pilot. there is outrage certainly in the kingdom of jordan but indeed around the world. i anticipate we'll be hearing at some point today from king abdullah of jordan. he happens to be in washington, d.c. right now. stay with us. at ally bank no branches equals great rates. it's a fact. kind of like mute buttons equal danger. ...that sound good? not being on this phone call sounds good. it's not muted. was that you jason? it was geoffrey! it was jason. it could've been brenda.
10:12 am
10:14 am
news. it's very sad breaking news. that jordanian f-16 fighter pilot who plane went down over syria and he ejected, he is now dead. isis has just released a videotape, a horrendous videotape showing him in a cage with gasoline poured on him after he was beaten. and then he was lit and died by fire, if you will. jordanian military according to jordanian state television saying he was actually killed on january 3rd which is a month or so -- almost exactly a month ago. that would explain why the isis terrorists did not release any proof of life video when negotiations were going on for the release of this convicted female terrorist, sajida al rishawi. let's bring back our panel of experts.
10:15 am
christiane amanpour paul cruickshank, bob baer jim sciutto and retired lieutenant colonel james reese. colonel reese, a horrendous brutality. you would think the beheadings of those two japanese hostages were obviously awful. but now the brutal video showing the murder of this jordanian fighter pilot. what's the point? why is isis -- what is isis trying to prove here? >> well wolf, christiane said it perfectly. what they're trying to do is trying to get members of the coalition to say nomas. we don't want this anymore. we've seen this brutality, we want out. right now, it's not happening. but we have seen this brutality from al qaeda, from al qaeda in iraq with zarqawi, we've seen it for years. they're brutal people. and it's not going to stop until we put a stop to them. >> paul do they really believe these kinds of videos whether
10:16 am
the beheading video of those japanese hostages or the burning of this jordanian fight per pilot, is going to win them support, get them more terrorists, if you will out there in social media, the propaganda battle, if you will? >> wolf, they think it's going to electrify their hardline supporters and also terrify their enemies and weaken their resolve. i've watched the video. it's truly horrifying probably the most horrifying thing i've ever seen come out of isis. it really dwells on his suffering. and they're sending a message to jordanian and other regional powers don't intervene against us, stop your war against us. they did the same tactic in iraq with a lot of torture of iraqi soldiers that they found, lots of these kind of terrifying videos. that did weaken the resolve of the iraqi military. they turned and fled from mosul even though they outnumbered isis to a huge degree. so this has worked for isis in
10:17 am
the past and they've calculated it's going to work in the future. >> bob baer, you agree with that? >> i do agree with it. that's their calculations. but the reality is that any sunni moderate support -- i don't know if moderate is the right word -- is going to evaporate. if the jordanian tribes had any chance of stepping in and convincing the king to back off this war against isis, it's over. the tribes are not going to accept this. and any lingering support the islamic state had is now dead. it's an act that's really going to hurt them. it's another nail in their coffin. >> do you have any sense, christiane what jordan might be doing? in recent days i heard from people in the know here in washington they were bracing for a major jordanian response if it is confirmed that that f-16 fighter pilot has been murdered. jordan's got a pretty good air force.
10:18 am
they could, i guess, step up their air strikes. >> you know, hard really to tell from here. they have confirmed it. i don't think there are any ifs or buts anymore. they have confirmed it. it's a month ago. why all these shenanigans from isis over the last week of linking this and that and the other prisoner swap -- it seems designed for maximum publicity maximum negotiating in public as the others have said maximum sort of recruitment ability for their people and many many people will be turned off. very, very, very profoundly. but i've just had a fascinating interview with a french colleague of mine who was held for 10 1/2 months by isis. it's the first time he's spoken on television. he was held and knows so-called jihadi john who says they reserved these isis hostages -- rather, the guards the
10:19 am
terrorists reserve their worst, worst treatment for their arab prisoners, and he also said that the worst aftof the worst of their guards were the jihadis, the british, the french, the others who had come over. so it's a very very strange cult that we're dealing with here. and certainly jordan has told me the foreign minister that they will not be thwarted or derailed from their fight. i asked him last week if indeed your pilot is not returned if he's dead what does this mean for your commitment to this fight? and he says, we're committed to fighting against terrorism. >> they certainly are. and we're now being told that king abdullah who's here in washington has decided, totally understandably to cut short his visit to the united states and immediately return to jordan the country obviously in mourning right now for the murder of this jordanian f-16 fighter pilot.
10:20 am
jim sciutto, you're getting more reaction as well. >> that's right. this is from jen psaki. there's another female american held by isis. she says we stand in solidarity with the jordanian people. you'll hear a lot of those comments certainly from the u.s. and from others making those statements that we'll stick together on this. the president said earlier it will in his words, redouble the coalition's commitment to fighting isis. it is interesting, of course that secretary of state john kerry met with the jordanian king this morning. but the tape had not come out then. so he did not speak with him about it at that time. they weren't aware of it. >> and maybe before the king leaves washington he'll make a statement and we'll have coverage of that. i want everyone to stand by. we're going to continue the breaking news coverage the murder of this jordanian f-16 fighter pilot, the reaction i'm told by jordan and other members of the u.s.-led coalition will
10:21 am
be intense. we're staying on top of the breaking news. we'll be right back. the exhilaration of a new engine. painstakingly engineered without compromise. to be more powerful... and, miraculously, unleash 46 mpg highway. an extravagance reserved for the privileged few. until now. hey josh! new jetta? yeah. introducing lots of new. the new volkswagen jetta tdi clean diesel. isn't it time for german engineering?
10:24 am
we want to welcome back our viewers here in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer reporting from washington. we're following breaking news. the murder of that jordanian f-16 fighter pilot, video released by isis showing him in a cage burned to death. let's go to amman, jordan, right now. jomana is joining us with more. the jordanian military i take it, now believes he was actually murdered early january, january 3rd, is that right?
10:25 am
>> reporter: that is correct. that is what we're hearing from the jordanian military and the government here this evening. they are saying that he was killed on january the 3rd. the government spokesman saying that this was their hunch all along. they felt that he had already been killed. they're not saying how they know the exact date of january the 3rd. but the government spokesman saying that last week when isis put moaz into that equation into the negotiations for the japanese hostages he said that is when they believed they were playing a dirty game. and that is why the jordanian government was insisting on that proof of life. the mood here this evening, wolf, is very somber. this is a nation that feels -- this is a nation that is mourning. this is a man that was considered a national hero by many. we're now hearing from our team that was out at this hall where the family of moaz al kasasbeh has been gathering for the past week or so. they say that hundreds of people have showed up tonight and more
10:26 am
are showing up to show their solidarity with their family. there's a mood of anger and disgust. people are saying things like, this is how they killed a fellow muslim. this is really a shock for many here. there had been some hope that maybe moaz al kasasbeh would be returning home. a lot of pressure here had been on the jordanian government to try and secure his release. but, again, we do not know what happened with those indirect negotiations that had been taking place between the jordanian government and isis and what demands they may have had for the release of al kasasbeh. we're hearing from the military this evening and the government saying they are going to retaliate and they are going to respond. no indication here that they are going to be pulling out from the anti-isis coalition, something that many jordanians believe that this government should do. some believe that this is not jordan's war and that it should not be involved in it. and this is how the country
10:27 am
ended in this situation, wolf. >> and we're also being told jordanian television reporting that king abdullah who's here in washington right now as well as the general commander of the jordan armed forces who's also here in washington for talks with president obama and other top ranking u.s. officials will be cutting short their visit to the united states immediately flying back to jordan totally understandable. you see the foreign minister there with secretary of state john kerry. they met earlier today. but obviously the release of this video will cut short this jordanian visit to the united states. jomana, stand by. our panel, stand by. we're getting more reaction presumably we'll be hearing directly from king abdullah of jordan at some point. he might want to make a statement before leaving the united states. of course, we will have coverage. stay with us. 3rd and 3. 58 seconds on the clock, what am i thinking about? foreign markets. asian debt that recognizes the shift in the global economy.

10:31 am
welcome back to our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer reporting from washington. . want to update you on the breaking news we're following. isis militants released a video that appears to show the barbaric murder of a jordanian fighter pilot. cnn has made the decision not to air the video or any images from it. it appears to show the pilot confined in a large cage and burned alive. just a short while ago, president obama reacted to this horrific news. >> i just got word of the video that had been released. i don't know the details of the confirmations. but should in fact this video be authentic, it's just one more indication of the viciousness
10:32 am
and barbarity of this organization. and it, i think, will redouble the vigilance and determination on the part of a global coalition to make sure that they are degraded and ultimately defeated. and it also just indicates the degree to which whatever ideology they're operating off of, it's bankrupt. >> the jordanian f-16 fighter pilot, moaz al kasasbeh was captured after his jet crashed in syria in december. he ejected from that f-16. he was taking part in the u.s.-led air strikes against isis. in the video messages last month, isis threatened to kill the pilot if jordan didn't release a female would-be suicide bomber, sajida al rishawi. jordan called for the release of the pilot in exchange for al
10:33 am
rishawi and demanded proof the pilot was still alive. but a banner on jordanian television now says he was actually killed on january 3rd. barbara starr is over at the pentagon. she's getting more reaction. horrific news, barbara. u.s. military officials are deeply deeply upset, outraged, if you will, by what has occurred. >> reporter: that's right, wolf. general lloyd austin the head of the u.s. central command, the part of the u.s. military that is leading the coalition, he has just issued a statement and i'll just read you in part. he says u.s. central command strongly condemns the savage murder of the jordanian pilot. he talks about it being another vicious act and that first and foremost the thoughts of the u.s. military are with the pilot's family. general austin also saying he has just spoken to his jordanian counterpart, the jordanian chief of defense staff. now, that's important because of course the u.s. is going to want to do everything it can to keep
10:34 am
jordan in this coalition. but that remains to be seen. king abdullah of jordan has been in washington at this hour on his way home back to amman. obviously he wants to be with the people of jordan consult with his government and i think fair to say everyone is waiting to see what the next steps may be by the jordanian government. will there be execution of the prisoner, sajida rishawi, the woman that jordan was offering to trade in return? she has been condemned to death for her role in previous bombing attacks in jordan. will there be other prisoner executions? all these things potentially. we do not know but potentially on the table, all of this putting king abdullah in a very delicate position of showing solidarity with his people and with the family of this pilot, also wanting to still by all accounts that we know of at this point be part of the coalition. let's quickly get to one other point. jordanian state tv saying that
10:35 am
the pilot was actually killed on january 3rd. a very specific date. how would anybody know this? i think it's fair to say that u.s. and jordanian intelligence has been very active in recent months trying to collect everything it can on isis in syria, which is very tough because neither country has military personnel on the ground. what we do know is u.s. intelligence has been intercepting eavesdropping, if you will every isis communication it can. perhaps they learned of the death -- the january 3rd death allegedly through intercepted communications. but also jordanian intelligence services some of the most capable in the region they work with their trusted agents on the ground all over syria, all over the middle east. they have people that they talk to. it is possible that the jordanian government at the very highest level had some tip that
10:36 am
january 3rd was an indication of the date the pilot was actually killed. it's a very specific piece of information and really there's only so many ways either government would know that. wolf? >> thank you very much barbara. we'll get back to you. i want to bring back paul cruickshank cruickshank, bob baer and retired lieutenant colonel james reese. in the statement just released by general lloyd austin at the end of the statement, it says, we stand with our jordanian partners and together we will fight this barbaric enemy until it is defeated. until it is defeated. in this statement which i assume was carefully prepared. general austin says the mission is defeat them. the president often says degrade
10:37 am
and ultimately destroy. take us behind the scenes at the u.s. military central command, colonel reese. on a statement like this it's very blunt. >> wolf it is. one of the reasons is the j.a.f. the jordanian arms forces, are one of our closest allies there. and their soldiers their airmen and soldiers there are fantastic. and we've worked closely with them through the years training and they also helped us fight in iraq in the early years. so there's a very special close relationship especially with general austin and his staff there. this is something we have to watch. right now, the best thing that i know general austin is going to do jordan is going to come up with an idea. they can't let their passion push them too far. work with the coalition. but the coalition knows at the end of the day, they need to defeat and destroy isis to make this go away. >> bob baer destroy isis until
10:38 am
it is defeated, that's not -- they've got some pretty strong capability right now. >> well, exactly. and they still have regional support. i know it sounds odd, but turkey is not playing a straight game here. boumeddiene, the "charlie hebdo" bomber, fled across the border. it's easy to get across that border. the turks cut a deal with the islamic state when they got their hostages back in mosul. we're also not getting cooperation from iran. iran is making a land grapb in iran giving support to the islamic state. and there's arab gulf money coming into the islamic state. the point now is this group is beyond anybody's conceivable in any way support them politically, militarily, any way.
10:39 am
we need regional cooperation. it's not just the jordanians. it's the most capable army capable intelligence service. but we need the rest of the region to destroy this organization. >> yeah. and that's obviously a lot easier said than done. paul if in fact the jordanian pilot, moaz al kasasbeh if in fact he was murdered on january 3rd why would isis hold up release of this brutal video showing him in a cage beaten and they poured gasoline over him and then they burned him to death, tortured him in this way? why would nay wait a month to release the video? >> that's not clear. but it appears if it was on january 3rd that was just ten days after they captured him near raqqa. obviously he was forced to eject from his warplane. possibly this was timed for the visit of king abdullah to washington for sort of maximum
10:40 am
embarrassment from the jordanian point of view. but not clear why they waited a whole month to put this out. but this is a really quite elaborate spectacle that they put together high-end production in terms of editing. so this is not a video they could have sort of turned overnight. it would have required several weeks to put together, wolf. >> yeah, it's very sophisticated. 22 minutes, in fact. and they begin by making the point that jordan is involved with the u.s.-led coalition launching air strikes and they make the propaganda point that they're simply killing a lot of arabs in syria and iraq in the process and then they go on at the end of the video, they show the pilot tortured they show the pilot burned to death. stand by. we're going to continue to watch the breaking news. much more right after this. mmm, a perfect 177-degrees. and that's why this road warrior rents from national. i can bypass the counter and go straight to my car. and i don't have to talk to any humans,
10:41 am
10:44 am
we're following the breaking news. the murder of a jordanian f-16 fighter pilot, lieutenant moaz al kasasbeh, shown in a video just released today by isis showing him burnt to death inside a cage. we've just received a statement from the jordanian military a statement from the commander, general commander of the jordanian armed forces. let me read it they referring to isis announced today the assassination of our heroic pilot on the day, january 3rd, 2015, meaning a month ago. the armed forces announced the mar dirdomtyr
10:45 am
martyrdom of our pilot and we ask god to accept him. the armed forces mourns the martyred hero and emphasizes that his blood will not be wasted and its punishment of those who assassinated moaz will be a revenge in the same level of the jordanian tragedy. joining us paul cruickshank, bob baer and retired lieutenant colonel james reese. he says there will be revenge in the same level of the jordanian tragedy. so clearly jordan is now officially going public and saying they're not going to step back they're going to seek out those responsible for the murder of this 26-year-old lieutenant and they're going to go after them and do what they need to do in the same manner as the jordanian tragedy.
10:46 am
what does that say to you? >> wolf one thing that's always interesting to me the jordanian armed forces have very similar values as the u.s. military. they fight for each other, just like we do. so it shows me that there's passion, there's anger running through the jordanian armed forces right now. and they want to go right now and they want to go really try to make it a knock on isis of what happened here. but like i said they've got some smart commanders there, centcom will help them. >> the u.s. has certain capabilities jordan has certain capabilities. and together they can be very effective. bob, we're getting word that protesters in amman, jordan are gathering outside the palace of king abdullah. he's here in washington but is flying immediately back to amman, jordan.
10:47 am
they're protesting wanting revenge. i suspect that kind of protest on the streets of amman and other cities and towns and villages throughout jordan will intensify in the coming hours. and that could have a huge impact on what jordan might do, right? >> yeah wolf i think we'll see a change. this burning somebody in a cage is nothing to do with islam. this is just pure barbarity which these people reject in any -- as i said before any sympathy toward sort of an islamic state in syria and iraq is going to die very quickly among these people especially the tribes in jordan live by revenge. and they'll be pushing the king probably to get more involved in the war on the islamic state, even using at some point commandos or whatever means the jordanians have. so i think this is going to be a huge political boost for the king. the people are just so disgusted in jordan by this. >> they certainly are.
10:48 am
paul in this official statement from the jordanian armed forces talking about revenge, that is very important. tell our viewers why the use of that word revenge, is so powerful in that part of the world. >> well it's an eye for an eye. i think it indicates that the jordanians are going to go after isis to a much more significant degree. they have significant intelligence capabilities in the region. of course this pilot comes from a prominent jordanian tribal family from the south of jordan sort of very, very connected. so i think we're likely to see a very big backlash as bob was saying in jordan but also in the wider region amongst sunnis. i think this is going to be potentially a very powerful backlash against isis. this may have been a big miscalculation from isis in brutally burning this pilot alive. >> guys i want all of you to stand by because we have much
10:49 am
more on top of this breaking news. unfortunately there's other breaking news. we're following the murder of the jordanian pilot held by isis. but also we're following another breaking news story on another front in the war against terrorism. the latest attack on soldiers in france. more arrests in a sweeping terror investigation. we'll tell you what happened outside a jewish institution in nice in the southern part of france. sunday dinners at my house... it's a full day for me, and i love it. but when i started having back pain my sister had to come help. i don't like asking for help. i took tylenol but i had to take six pills to get through the day. so my daughter brought over some aleve. it's just two pills, all day! and now, i'm back! aleve. two pills. all day strong, all day long. and now introducing aleve pm for a better am. if a denture were to be put under a microscope we can see all the bacteria that still exists.
10:50 am
10:53 am

also, officials are investigating yet another knife attack on french soldiers in the streets of nice on southern france. we just learned the suspect in the attack was on the radar of intelligence officers. let's get more from our senior international correspondent jim bitterman. what can you tell us about this? what was it a knife attack on these soldiers who were stationed outside this jewish community center? is that what happened jim? >> that's exactly it. the soldiers were on patrol outside the jewish community center. also close to a big department store in nice. suddenly this man came at them with a large knife described as a butcher knife. something large in any case. one of the soldiers was wounded in the cheek and perhaps neck. in subduing this perpetrator,

they were -- another soldier was wounded slightly. so two slightly wounded soldiers. they of course captured the guy. the police have said now that his name is kooul baa lycoulibaly, which is the same last name as the suspects in the paris terror attack. it's a common name so there may be no direct correlation. nonetheless, this coulibaly had been on the radar of french intelligence officials, mainly because he took a one-way flight to turkey on the 29th of january. so just a few days ago. he went to turkey. they signaled the turkish authorities. the turkish authorities sent him back. he came back to france and they called him in for questioning. he was questioned but they didn't hold him because they didn't have anything to hold him on except he had taken a one-way

flight to turkey. so he was released and was on the streets. then suddenly perpetrated this knife attack this afternoon in nice. >> i know they're investigating if there's any relationship between this suspect with the knife attack in nice whose name is coulibaly, as opposed to amedy coulibaly, the guy who went into the jewish supermarket and murdered those four shoppers inside there before he himself was killed. we're going to stay on top of this story. jim bitterman watching what's going on in france. a lot more on the breaking news. that's it for me. i'll be back at 5:00 p.m. eastern in "the situation room." for our international viewers, amanpour is coming up next. for our u.s. viewers, "newsroom" is next with brooke baldwin after a quick break. toms was all i was doing. and when i finally told my doctor, he said humira is for adults like me who have tried

online by isis supporters. this jordanian pilot captured by isis when his jet went down and thrust into the center of hostage trade talks appears to have been burned alive while trapped in a cage. it is incredibly difficult to imagine a more brutal murder than a beheading with a dull knife, but this video shows isis may have found a new and even more disgusting way to kill. let me be 100% transparent here. cnn has decided we will absolutely not show any of these appalling pictures out of the respect for the families and to avoid showcasing this brutal isis propaganda. but i will tell you, i have chosen not to watch this video. i have several colleagues who have watched
