4:00 am
the suspect killed by police. one of the apparent targets a cartoonist who depicted mohamed with a image of a dog. more than 1600 flights are canceled into boston and the snow is just starting to pile up, folks. this is cnn breaking news. so glad to have your company. i'm christi paul. >> i'm martin savitch. >> we are following breaking news this morning. police investigating whether the suspect in twin terror attacks in a synagogue and danish capital acted along. >> the suspected gunman was killed hours ago at his apartment in copenhagen. earlier they released this surveillance photo of him. it started yesterday when a gunman sprayed a copenhagen cafe killing one person there.
4:01 am
a gunman was targeting a cartoonist who was on a wanted list when shots rang out. >> it sounds like they are never going to end, doesn't it? just ten hours later then a gunman approached two officers near a synagogue and started shooting. a bystander was killed. nic robertson is with us. talk to us about where you are and what happened there. >> i'm literally around the corner from the apartment building where the alleged gunman was and was killed by the police. he had returned to his apartment at about 4:50 in the morning here.
4:02 am
the police had it staked out the night before because of what they had seen on that surveillance footage they realized that was the apartment he lived in or they believed that. they waited for him to return. when he returned they challenged him and then he opened fire on them. they fired back, killing him. this is known here as an area that has a high immigrant population here. the police have not released the identity of this man nor what they believe the motive for the attack may be. what we have learned from the jewish community here, a 37-year-old man was killed who was a guard outside the synagogue. there was a party there in the house behind the synagogue that night for a young girl and he was -- he essentially was on guard duty when this gunman walked up and shot him dead and shot the two police officers who were there with him guarding that event.
4:03 am
>> are police pretty certain that this suspect acted alone at this particular time? >> they believe they got the man who is behind the two attacks. there seems to be little doubt in that at the moment. they haven't declared it 100% but the police presence in this city is high and armed policemen behind me here and other police spread out through the city and still a lot of police officers on duty because there is a state of heightened alert and caution because they can't, authorities here cannot be sure if there will be another follow-on attack, a copycat type of attack and it's not sure. while police believe they have the man responsible and they have now killed him, they do take a lot of care and caution, we are being told, that they don't rest up because there is this concern, of course, that
4:04 am
there may be the potential for another attack to follow on from someone else. >> very good point. nic robertson, thank you so much for bringing us the latest there. we are learning more about one of the victims. he is 37-year-old dan uson and killed outside of the synagogue and providing security for a bar mitzvah inside. he was very active in the jewish society in copenhagen. i want to bring in the deputy prime minister of denmark and joins us on the telephone. deputy prime minister, thank you for joyce ejoiniining us and soe losses in your country. can you tell me do you believe the gunman acted alone? >> tomat the moment, the police trying to find out for certain. what is reassuring it appears it was a lone perpetrator and that the police identified him
4:05 am
quickly and now he's deceived, and, therefore, the investigation now can resume, even though we have continuously high alert and are -- the police are very vigilant in and around copenhagen. i think it's fair to say that the police are fairly certain they got the man. >> given the fact of "charlie hebdo," the attack that took place in paris and certainly with al qaeda actively going after the cartoonist, doubt the security was appropriate at this cafe where the meeting was taking place? >> well, i think everybody here is now relieved of the fact that there was a high level of security at the place of the debate, and also that stemming from that attack, there was armed police by the synagogue, because what would of happened
4:06 am
if those two places have been left alone without police protection? then this might have been disaster of even great proportion. all of our thoughts and prayers go to the families of the victims, but we also have great respect for the fact that our intelligence community and our police were present and helped make this terrorist attack or prevented this terrorist attack become even more devastating than it was. >> it had the hallmarks of a terrorist attack and you used that term yourself. do you feel this was an act carried out by some clause? >> the event at the cafe in copenhagen was a political debate on freedom of speech. as you've mentioned a swedish
4:07 am
cartoonist were present, so it appears that it was some kind of a political motive behind it. of course, this is all something that is now being part of the police investigation, but the police have, from the beginning, been investigating this as a terrorist attack. >> deputy prime minister, thank you very much for talking to us today. >> thanks for having me. the u.s., of course, is condemning the shootings in denmark and our erin mcpike is in washington this morning. erin, any indication the u.s. will help with the investigation or that copenhagen will even ask? >> reporter: that is certainly possible, but i do want to clarify that the statement that the white house put out last night is only about the first shooting, the one that occurred in the cafe and not in time but the one that happened in the synagogue. let me read this statement to you. it comes from national security council and says the united
4:08 am
states condemns today's shooting in denmark and offer our condolences to those involved. we have been in close contact with our danish counterparts and to lend any assistance necessary to the investigation. the statement is cautious but only about the first shooting. the statements we have seen from other world leaders have been much stronger and much more in-depth. of course, as you may know from the past week, president obama and the white house have come under a little bit of scrutiny because president obama, of course, referred to the second attack in paris after the "charlie hebdo" attack, the one that happened in the kosher deli as random. you are hearing from other lawmakers that antisemitism is on the rise in europe. >> erin mcpike, good to see you this morning. thank you.

the other big story that we are following, the blizzard in boston. snow already falling across the northeast. we are going to go there live. plus, the cease-fire in ukraine. it's now in effect, but will it hold? an update coming up. try zyrtec-d® to powerfully clear your blocked nose and relieve your other allergy symptoms... so you can breathe easier all day. zyrtec-d®. find it at the pharmacy counter. zyrtec-d®. that's the way i look at life. looking for something better. especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib, a type of irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. i was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging,
4:10 am
could i come up with something better. my doctor told me about eliquis... for three important reasons. one, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. and three, unlike warfarin, there's no routine blood testing. don't stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. those three important reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you.

let's show you some new overnight video in from boston which is just getting slammed. this morning, there another blizzard that is bearing down on that city, a city that has just set a new record after weeks and weeks of snow. this new snowstorm is affecting millions of people, not just boston, but all across new england. >> right. in fact, in ohio, take a look at the scene here. three people died while they were driving on some pretty treacherous roadways. obviously, this has contributed to the weather there. a pregnant woman and her unborn child were among the victims
4:13 am
there. then the airline travelers who are feeling the storm's effect with more than 1,600 flights, i think, at this point cancelled and boston logan is getting introduced under and new jersey's newark airport. >> we have crews spread out throughout massachusetts. you see there on the left is our correspondent and but we begin with correspondent cristina alesci. you've been there three hours. how is this evolving? >> reporter: oh, my goodness. coming down 1 to 3 inches an hour. when i got up, the roads were cleared. now you can't see the road any more. the plows haven't been able to make it through. this morning, boston set a record. it's the official snowiest month on record here. you know, just to give you some contacts, this has been the fourth storm in as many weeks. as you can see here, this huge snow pile is 80 inches of snow.
4:14 am
it's the snowiest winter in -- i think the seventh snowiest winter in boston. it's just nrveincredible. the city is trying to dig out and every aspect is trying to get around and transportation. the mass transit system has been shut down a few times already, including today. and residents had to get their cars off the street yesterday. there was a 10:00 p.m. parking ban in effect. not for mention, plenty of concerns like rooftops and snow accumulating on rooftops is a major concern here. keep in mind, residents are nervous about power outages because the wind is supposed to be whipping up. this morning it was blowing about 22 miles an hour. when it gets that high, you get visibility concerns because the wind is just taking all of this very powdery snow and kind of blowing it all over the place and that what creates the visibility pattern problems. as you can see here, more snow.
4:15 am
this is what i'm talking about. it's just snow on top of snow and it's really making it hard, especially for small businesses because employees can't get there. that means they are shutting down their businesses. customers can't get there. revenues are down. the governor saying it should be valentine's day week to help these businesses recover some of those lost sales and intaed it is here, it could get even worse by the coastline. that is where my colleague will ripley is in cape ann. how is it going over there, will? >> unlike you guys in boston which got a bit of a break overnight from the snow it kept falling here on capan. down the road they have recorded a foot of fresh powder since this storm began. the winds are whipping right now. this is our gustometer.
4:16 am
the wind gusts were so strong and shaking our beds. you see one of the wind gusts here right now. the atlantic ocean behind me, you can't see it. it's all white caps. the waves are crashing in. the visibility near zero here as well and it's expected to stay that way even after the snow has stopped falling. the reason for that, there is so much fresh powder on top of these huge mounds of packed powder that you're going to have a rare situation where you have limited visibility even after the snowfall, which is going to make driving very dangerous and it's the reason why roads here in rockport are closed right now and are going to stay closed until 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. you can't see it because it's hidden by the tree line but there is a bulldozer trying to carve out a path on the road to our hotel. it's so narrow, you can barely drive. you just have maybe a foot or so on each side of the suv as the locals would say, guys, this storm is wicked. back to you. >> thank you both very much.
4:17 am
forget the gustonmeter. >> you can hear it, for heaven's sakes! cristina was talking about the businesses there and wanting to extend valentine's day. one place delivered dinner for the first time in four years. he said i have a special truck and special valentine's day menu and i thought i would have fun. they will bring dinner to you when they can but doesn't seem like they will able to do that very soon? >> the secondary roads it takes a while from living there so many years. we have to clear out the interstates and then get to the roads. here is thundersnow that is ongoing as we speak. move this forward ahead for me, michael, so we can see the nl2 radar and depict the heavier bands moving through boston. incredible scenes right now. not only are we getting the snow
4:18 am
but thundersnow. the national weather service is sporting snowfall rates 2 to 4 inches an hour and in the last hour, we have already picked up 3 inches of snowfall across the region to hear. in fact, getting word from the national weather service as well that we have in plymouth down across the cape here because of the strong winds coming in, we are talking about two feet of water that has now made it into the area of plymouth and that is what we were concerned about because of that north wind that comes in and the water gets pushed out. look at the lightning bolts coming down here. incredible stuff. you see the purple hues that is indicative of the heavy snowfall going in boston right now. an amazing scene. we have several more hours of several more inches so this is not going to be done. when the blizzard, as far as the snow coming out of the sky is done, we are still looking at blizzard warnings that extend all the way out to worcester, mass. unbelievable scene there because with you see the snow on the

ground there as you saw with some of our reporters there that will get picked up. you don't need snow coming out of the cloud to get a blizzard and exactly what we have. dangerous stuff there. you saw the woman in the live shot? you got to walk the dog, i understand but try to limit that activity because by the time we get into tomorrow is what you're dealing with, windchills 20 and 30 below zero by the time we get into monday morning and we are tracking another storm that is going to be moving in through the region here. so, yes, the winter of 2014-2015 going down in the history books. we are number seven right now for the snowiest weather, i think we will get to the top five. >> you do? >> absolutely. no question. >> you made a very good point. please remember your pets. bring them inside. >> check on the elderly and your folks because they lose power with these temperatures and it's dangerous. >> thank you, ivan, so much. another story we are continuing to watch closely this morning is the cease-fire. it is in effect in ukraine. the question is will it hold? in our next half hour, we will

having a high immigrant population and socially deprived with a young population here as well. what happened was the suspect gunman returned to his house, his apartment which is really just behind this block of buildings you can see behind me here at about 4:50 this morning. the pliolice were waiting there because they had reason to believe that is where he was living. he challenged them and started firing and then the police killed him. the police are going through the apartment building and talking to neighbors there and haven't said who this man is yet or precisely where he was from but what they have described him as being is about 25 to 30, of an athletic building, quite tall. the local police i've been talking to say the community is worried and concerned if there

4:33 am
it would appear as if it's similar to other incidents and, of course, mr. vilks who is the one that was was in this theater, he made his own statement saying he was the target and it's related to the 2007 caricatures of mohamed by the cartoonist. now, the reality is we don't know yet. but there are similar incidents that we have seen elsewhere, if, in fact, mr. vilks' statement is correct, we saw the canadian incidents, two of those in october, we saw the new york incident, we saw the sydney and last month, of course, the tragedy there in paris where 17 innocent people were killed. so if it's a lone wolf, they are being encouraged by perhaps some of what we are hearing out of the middle east with al qaeda and peninsula.
4:34 am
>> do you think this is the big terror and not the huge attacks we all feared but, in fact, these terrible attacks on a much smaller scale? >> well, certainly, martin, it would appear that we are seeing a surge of this sort of thing, that people are spun up by social media, that they feel that they are part of a franchise of disjointed jihadists around the the worwor a particular mission. if you listen to to -- if that is the case then we as citizens, local police must be very vigilant about perhaps these types of individuals, lone wolves, if you want, all of a sudden, appearing. but the fact is we can track this as a local community. you see something suspicious, tell your local police.
4:35 am
they will be suspicious as well and, you know, they will confirm whether or not it's, in fact, a threat. but if we don't do it at the local level, much like the people there in copenhagen, then we are going to be perhaps subject to a similar incident. i don't see that this is going to be resolved easily and it's certainly not going to be resolved militarily. it would appear as if you have a fringe ideology on the loose that could affect a lot of societies around the world. >> vigilance is needed here. retired colonel bob mcginnis, thank you very much. >> thank you, martins. this is cnn breaking news. comurp on hour 15 the truce ukraine and prorussian separatists hoped to put an end

process. >> is there anything you see politically that could be done as we move forward? so solidify some sort of peace? what does each side have to do and give here and do you think it will happen? >> well, of course, what is needed is political will and, you know, what we will be looking for in the next few days as well, according to the package, is signs that, you know, one of the key cornerstones of heavy weaponry is going to happen. the guns will hopefully be silent and the armed individuals, the regular armed groups, will also go back to where they came from. it could take a huge effort and under no illusions and hence we are deploying for technology aside from the drones we are already using things like satellite imagery so we can be the trusted eyes and ears for the international community on the ground. >> with that much distrust, i think that is part what is make willing this so difficult.
