between the military and prorussian separatists, the newsroom starts right now. hello, everyone and thanks for joining me. al two people are under arrest a day after a pair of deadly shootings in copenhagen denmark, the suspected gunman also dead. now the fbi is on the terror case. it all began yesterday when a man targeted a free speech forum attended a well known artist. a 55-year-old man died and three officers were wounded. ten hours later, a second shooting took place outside of copenhagen synagogue, a 37-year-old man providing security was shot and killed and two officers were wounded. this afternoon denmark's tv too broke news that two people were arrested at an internet cafe and we're still waiting to see

whether -- surveillance video helped lead them to the 22-year-old man who has a criminal record and who police say may have been inspired by the paris terror attacks. a u.s. official tells cnn the fbi is new assisting with the investigation. the chief of the danish security and intelligence service had earlier said quote, there is good reason to believe this is terror related and therefore we are treating it as if it is terror end quote. right before the show today, i spoke to the controversial swedish artist lars vilks. he survived yesterday's shooting at the cafe when he was attending that forum on art, blasphemy and freedom of expression. he has survived two attempts on his life.
11:03 am
al qaeda placed him on their most wanted poster and since then he has traveled with body guards and he checks his car the bombs. i spoke to him exclusively before this show about the attacks in denmark. do you feel you were the target perhaps, for your depiction of the profit mohammad back in 2007? >> yeah that's the best can date we have i would say, because there's hardly anyone else who has that level of threats there. but of course you cannot be really sure. this is the best shot we have, at least at the moment. >> others dayed, the first person to die in the attacks that began on saturday was a 40-year-old man, did you know him? >> no, i didn't.
11:04 am
i mean it seems that it was a person who passed by, it was those who were in the lecture room they were protected there by the police. so this was a passer by who unluckily actually happened to be in the wrong place. >> take me back to this freedom of speech forum that you were sponsoring. what was the objective, what were you hoping would take place and was security a big concern as well? >> yeah i mean it's the lecture series concerning freedom of speech and art. and so the seminar was made by the committee here and they give me a place for lecturing, which
11:05 am
is much more difficult in sweden. and i think we had a good program this day. and everything starting well. we took up the charlie habdo case but it was at the direction of the ambassador of france in copenhagen who actually talked about the situation and i think it was so interesting. when we finished we went on to the program and there was a woman from a feminist organization and she started to talk. and when she started, we suddenly heard a lot of noise, i mean it was bang bang bang. and very quickly we could understand that something was going on. the
11:06 am
they rushed to ed to the body guards took me and put me under a table and we were guarded by people with drawn guns. i understood that we actually came into a safe hiding there. >> and at that point, did you think you were the target you were the reason why that shooting was taking place? >> well yeah as i said before it's so difficult to see. what was -- what could you aim for really? what could you be against? i don't know. it's very well known and been -- we published now after the charlie hadbo related that. i moon i'm standing in the middle there and this thing was announced, and yeah it seems
11:07 am
not unreasonable to believe that. >> and once the shooting stopped, or you felt it was safe for you to emerge to come out, what were you thinking feeling, what did you see? >> i didn't see anything because the gunman he attacked from the front, i mean he was probably trying to shoot himself s for this kind of fight. so there were several of the
11:08 am
policemen that was wountdgded but still they tried to fire back. and i'm sure the gunman understood that if he went through the glass, then he would be in the line of the police fire. so they forced him back but without really effort. and the poor people in the lecture room i mean that was not taken away they were hiding in corners and on the tables and everything and they were just waiting for who is going to open the door here and what will come in and luckily, it was one of the wounded policemen who actually came in there. >> and i realize as an artist your drawing of the profit mohammad was many years ago in 2007 and there are other artists who have rendered pictures of the prophet mohammad and angered

many in the muslim community. authors, and charlie"charlie hebdo"charlie heb"charlie hebdo" being the target. do you feel responsible or do you feel that you have contributed to this sentiment that has inspired some people to resort to violence to express their anger about how the profit mohammad has been depicted? >> well when you pose a question on the political responsibility i mean the religious symbols they are carrying at least in this case they're carrying political decisions, certain dogmas so if you question the basic symbols of this it's part of a political conversation and if you have people that want to go
11:10 am
out and have guns and start murdering people the thing is you should put these people in prison. because you cannot accept people murdering and try that way to stop the discussion you have concerning our questions which you do with the freedom of speech and in a democracy, so it is a responsibility of course the ones that are falling the rules, if those people try to stop it with violence and murder. >> do you rethink in any way the motivation behind your 2007 drawing? >> yeah i then that was a kind of minor thing because this was more about the question about, again, the art world, in every art exhibition you'll see that you have a political statement
11:11 am
against bush and against israel, but you never have any question about the islam thing, which actually then were more interesting subject after the caricatures. so i wanted to add something to that discussion why are you so one sided again, in the art world. i didn't expect this to be something more from the mild side that that area of exhibition. and basically it was a misunderstanding that very often comes over when you make a drawing immediately end up in a disaster an enormous interest and lots of violence. that is not the case. it's very rare that something actually becomes so interesting. and if one follows the story of
11:12 am
this round about thing, it has to pass many many levels of interest before it actually living it's own life and becomes enough known to become a symbol for hatred. >> at one time you were on an assassination list by al qaeda and other similar groups. to your knowledge, are you still on anyone's assassination list and if so is that why you continue to travel with body guards? >> yeah i mean why am i now such a well known target. and that's half the value because these guys they work very much concerned with a media interest. so it will be someone that's well known, so everyone can have
11:13 am
a reference to these things. so that means when i go somewhere, i always have body guards i can't go anywhere on my own. >> so now what -- so now what you narrowly escaped death, in denmark. how does this influence your forum that you might arrange, your next public outing. yeah that's a very interesting question to me talking is a mean mean -- one, to those who are arranging the next meeting, and next how will it be protected. and if there is something which cannot be protected, that is not my questions to answer. that's the questions that the higher level. but one has to understand that

>> reporter: we know that the police have been all over copenhagen today, and several houses have been searched by the police. we know they are trying to find out where the perpetrator has spent his last hours. so they are trying to connect the dots. and figure out what happened. we know that he was connected to an area of copenhagen where a well known gang was living. and in the area they have found a weapon a semi-automatic weapon that might be the first weapon that was used in the first shooting. >> astrid tell me about the access to these big weapons because we heard earlier in my conversation that in his view the suspect was better armed than the police.
11:19 am
>> normally the police will not carry semi-automatic weapons when they are standing by as body guards. and when the perpetrator came there, he did have a pistol or a machine-gun. and yes, i suppose it is true that it has way better firepower than the policeman's armory. and now that the policemen who are sent from copenhagen are sitting at the jewish synagogue and is guarded by policemen with semi-automatic weapons. >> there are some comparisons that the fbi is willing to make about what took place in denmark and what took place in paris. what are danish authorities saying about the parallels and how what happened in paris would
