we see peshmerga soldiers in cages. they threatened them telling them to abandon their jobs or face a similar fate. cnn can not independently confirm the authenticity of the recording. cnn is on the ground in iraq. let's go to senior international correspondent ben weidman who is live in erbil. you have been on the lines with these fighters. do you get the sense, do you surmise this video will have any impact on their resolve? >> it's clear from the video itself, george, that's the aim of isis in putting out this video showing 21 of their comrades in cages and certainly hanging heavily over this video is an implied threat that these people will suffer the same fate as so many others we have seen in libya and syria. and iraq but it does not appear this will make a major impact on

the resolve of the kurds. they realize this is in a sense, a fight for their very existence. isis has very little tolerance for the fact the kurds seem to want to determine their own fate and not throw their lot in with the dark ages mentality of isis. now certainly -- we are hearing other information, other news that may bolster the morale of the kurds. we understand overnight there was another major assault by isis in the area where earlier this week they fought for five hours trying to break through kurdish lines. in this instance the action took place south of erbil, an hour and a half drive. according to our sources, at least 50 isis soldiers were killed after a battle that lasted an hour and a half and involved coalition air strikes, as well with. they say among the 50 bodies that they found of dead isis

fighters that there were foreigners as well. there's also been action in the sinjad area west of here near the syrian border where peshmaga forces joined with the kurdish fighters from syria who came in to iraq to join in the fight against isis there. despite the propaganda put out by isis it does appear when it comes to the kurds isis is on the defensive. >> then this propaganda we're not showing the video. with we are showing images if even that. not playing in to this but the video uses music shows images and important we cannot confirm these men have met a demise in this video. correct? >> that's correct. what you see are flashes of

stills of the egyptian christians killed in libya last week. certainly know there's no indication the kurdish fighters have been killed in this instance. certainly the indications are their fate will not be a happy one, despite the importance of compassion in islam. it does not appear that isis has much compassion for those it takes prisoners. >> i want to ask you one other question about the weapons that isis seized, american weapons that it recently seized. what more can you tell us about that? >> this is a video that was posted day before yesterday on facebook. it appears to show isis fighters overrunning an iraqi army base. we understand it is about 100 kilometers to the north of baghdad. our sources indicate that incident actually happened earlier in february.

it was only the day before yesterday the video was posted. what you see is them displaying about 35 by my count u.s.-made m-16s. it's important to stress they are u.s. made but of course in the possession of the iraqi army at least they were. in addition to that, you see a pile of ak-47 assault rifles. you see some armored personnel carriers also american made as well as a humvee and lots of ammunition morter and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. this is the latest incident along those lines swrechl seen in time after time particularly in anbar province as isis has taken over one iraqi military installation after another. last june when the iraqi army fled with their tail between their legs from mosul, they left behind a huge amount of

who will be making their way back to the territory controlled by the pro-russian separatists. another thing that could be positive step is the pro russian separatists said they believe the bulk of the fighting operations are over and they have given an order to start making preparations to withdrawal heavy weapons from the front line area. that's very significant. according to the agreements that would be the next major step to happen is for both sides to withdrawal heavy weapons away from the front line area to make sure that no fighting ensues there again. of course ukraine for its part today is marking one year since former president was forced to leave the country, forced to flee by helicopter. there will be a solidarity march through central kiev, centering around the area where the uprising start ed a year ago. the president of germany will be coming and polish leader and

welcome back to cnn newsroom. i'm george howell. a minnesota police officer is recovering after he was shot when responding to a burglary. the shooting happened early saturday morning in minneapolis. a man was arrested in connection with a burglary and reported domestic assault. investigators do not believe this particular officer was the intended target. >> the officer was not at his squad car when this happened. he was outside of the squad car. it's clear to us the officer was shot in relation to his response to the call. it didn't seem at all, to us related to the information that we have at this time that there would be any reason to shoot this officer other than him targeted for him doing his job. >> detectives are looking in to whether the reported assault, the burglary and the shooting are all related. there's a new u.s. government report that warning of armed domestic terror groups

in neighborhoods around the u.s. and some law enforcement groups say the threat from home grown groups is greater than that from foreign groups. cnn's nick valencia has the story. >> reporter: from california to florida, all across the united states sporadic attacks on law enforcement by sovereign citizen extremists. a new intelligence estimate circulated this month at the department of homeland security puts a focus on domestic terror threats. >> unfortunately, there's a number of those tloout throughout the united states that we have to be concerned about. deadly plots like this one last year in georgia armed with several explosives smoke grenades and plenty of ammunition police say dennis marx showed up ready to kill. deputies shot and killed marx after he tried to drive his suv in the courthouse. the fbi's assistant director tells cnn there maybe thousands of others like marx ready to

attack. >> we have been talking about the international terrorism threat but there are domestic groups just as concerning that we worry about here in the united states. >> reporter: a recent survey listed sovereign citizen terrorists ahead of foreign islamic terror groups like isis and domestic militia groups as the top domestic threat. by some estimates 300,000 sovereign citizens in the united states today. >> their believes go back 20 25 years or even further. essentially they believe the federal government has no jurisdiction over them. >> the latest dhs report counted 24 violent sovereign citizen-related attacks since tween 2010 with law enforcement officers as the primary target. >> they have no baysis in reality. they are often telling people they can get something for nothing. they don't have to pay their taxes, they don't have to pay credit card debt.

week after week with after week with especially in the northeast. they are tired of this. >> enough already is what everyone says to me. it is like don't hate the messenger. it's not my fault. another snowstorm that we are currently tracking across the big cities along the east coast, including washington, d.c. new york, and, yes, boston once again. this is the latest watches and warnings in effect. you can see the shading of pink from new york to philadelphia just outside of washington. that's a winter storm warning. we have snow and a wintry mix ongoing across this region. in fact, that has allowed people to take yes, selfies in front of the white house in washington, d.c. obviously a national monument there. you can see the fresh layer of snow. our radar is currently lighting up like a christmas tree with all kinds of colors from atlanta to boston. of course that representing rainfall, the shading of blue and green and you can see the

mixture where the pink coloring through philadelphia. cold enough behind this cold floont we have transitioned to snowfall for rhode island and much of connecticut. this system is going to move off shore. we are going to start to clear things out. you guessed it, an arctic blast of air will inundate the eastern half of the united states once again. i want to show you the northern parts of the plain states because we have windchill warnings and advisories in effect. 30 to 40 degree s below zero. yes, this is windchill forecast temperatures for this region. this is cool because you never know what you will find in this type of rare temperature drop including one lucky individual who got to go out on lake michigan and see what is called an ice cave. look at this. i think this is absolutely fantastic. i'm actually from the midwest, from grand rapids michigan. i've seen the lakes freeze over like this. currently the great lakes at 85%

us. >> greece will get a four-month extension in funding that will prevent bankruptcy but must come up with specific promises of economic reform by monday and it will keep the country from leaving the euro. officials in dubai don't know what caused a huge fire in one of the world with's tallest apartment buildings. the fire broke out in upper floors of the torch tower, ironically called in the early-morning hours on sunday. flames erupted and burning debris could be seen coming from the tower. residents fled when the fire alarm sounded. it took firefighters several hours to extinguish that fire. i want to show you how it looked after the sun rose on saturday morning. you can see the charred areas of the side of the building. some residents worried of whether they could go back after running from the building with just a few clothes they were wearing. isis threatens to cut the tongue of anyone who utters this one word.

last summer. many arabic speakers still call them daesh. what do they hate about it? some say it sounds like other words that can mean to stomp on something. some isis supporters they want the full name of their state to be shared with the world. there is a push to call them daesh to deny them the legit macy. what about other names in english, isis, the islamic state in iraq and syria or isil the islamic state in iraq and levant. but it leaves geography out of the mix. but can anyone call them an islamic state in they hold land which is one of the attributes of a state and they have in some areas what amounts to a

government but they are not recognized internationally as a state, just a terror group and there's no consensus on whether they are actually islamic. to supporters isis is the essence of islam and everyone else an infidel. a notion rejected as absurd by countless muslim scholars and believers around the world. isis fighter and supporters insist they follow the path of allah, god and the west is hell bent on battling islam. >> that's how they recruit, how they try to radicalize young people. we must never accept the premise they put forward. because it is a lie. >> reporter: whatever we call it and it calls itself daesh, isis isil islamic state, it is what it is a group without scruples bent on spreading a rain of terror. another story here north korea, the leader of the country

you can see the stronger winds starting to pick up in to scotland and ireland. we are talking wind gusts in excess of 80 kilometers an hour at times. of course that shading of deep red and purples, that is indicating our strongest wind gust as it pushes across paris in to amsterdam, as well as london. you can see copenhagen to oslo this direct northwesterly wind ushering in chilly weather, as well. this cold front does have showers associated with it. this is mainly a rain maker for the region. maybe a few snow showers in advance of it. the main concern here is obviously flight delays. we have potential of an hour to an hour and a half perhaps at amsterdam, dublin more of the same. you can see that is associated to the winds we are anticipating from this particular storm system. now we hop across the big pond. that is the atlantic. this is the united states. and now our eyes focus on the western half of the united states. we are monitoring a low pressure

we have been producing our own molds for casting since then. next up in refining our oscar statuette is removing the parting lines from the process. this allows us to refine the surface to ensure he looks as perfect as possible. this is our polishing department. this is where we take our statues that have been sanded and ground and we bring them to a mirror finish. everything we do with oscar is done entirely by hand. ♪ here we are in our engraving department. this is where louise white, who has been engraving our oscars since the early '80s puts a serial number on every one of them. we take oscar from his raw state
