night. we are counting down to the start of the 87th annual academy awards. i have got the best view in the house, a bird's-eye view i birdman's eye view, got that? of all of the action. my boy don lemon is down on the red carpet and in the mix talking to the people that are arriving. you look so handsome, my dear. >> thank you very much. you look beautiful. you totally stole my line, birdman eye view of the red carpet. you mentioned a-listers and you don't get any bigger than this. we will start off with patricia arquette is here and congratulations on your nomination for best supporting actress. this really was a labor of love for you, 12 years. >> yeah. and working with some of the most incredible people i've ever known. it's all winding up which means the end of the movie so that's kind of hard, but what a beautiful way to end it. >> this is about family for you. you brought your entire family. >> brought my posse. >> your daughter. >> they're here to support you. >> that's right. they are, and the rest of them

it didn't look like it was the most important day of her life. >> we'll talk about that coming up because it could be an interesting year for oscar fashion and that's why we are so glad to have you here. rocsi diaz, anchor and kre correspondent with the bird's-eye view. they'll be coming there in a moment and you'll be joined by a few thousand people and entertainment reporter katrina zish is the one that has the action and the view. she's on the roof of the historic roosevelt hotel. you can see everything there. how are you ladies doing? rocsi, how are you doing up there? >> i'm getting ready to party and i have my dancing shoes on and it's time to go. i'm just waiting for elton to show up, but it is such a great event. it's one of the biggest events of the night. so we're going to be a-listed out over here, michaela. >> and katrina, how about you? i know that you've been watching this in terms of what kind of year this is going to be overall.

some are saying that this could be the most predictable oscars ever. do you think that's the case? >> oh, absolutely not. we've seen the globes and we've seen the sags and of course, we have an idea of who the favorites are, but there are always surprises when it comes to the oscars and that's what makes it so much fun, particularly this year i think best picture could upset or could surprise all of us, i think people are saying it will be birdman or "boyhood," but i really think "american sniper" can come in and take the big award. it has resonated so much with the audiences and of course, the story is now continuing in a texas courtroom as we really see this real-life story continue to unfold. >> yeah. you're right. it's not just a film and the story of a man's life and his subsequent death. katrina and rocsi, thank you so much. you know what we're missing? a little dose of canadian rock star power. don lemon has got it. my wish is your command!

we'll bring it back up here so i can talk to joanna coles because you had mentioned with tegan and sara are proud products of calgary, alberta, canada. talk about neil patrick harris, the host of this year's academy awards, the 87th and this is his first time hosting the oscars, but he's a bit of an awards show darling. >> he was so good in the tony awards and has big shoes to fill because ellen was so good last year. the oscars had a couple of rocky years and she had the brilliant moment with the selfie. >> i'm sure he's going to try, and i saw him very recently in a headwig. he was just having another round on broadway. he was unbelievable. unbelievable. the man's energy is fantastic and that's what this show needs is a song and dance man and you've got it in neil patrick harris. i just like to call him nph. he's the triple threat. >> i like the idea of calling him a hat trick.

he does have the triple threat. listen, he is an eminently capable guy of holding this show together and there are so many different bids and there are ebbs and flows in the energy and people's speeches go on too long and he can nail it very quickly and the idea that you get out of the way and let the show happen and if the show is dragging you need to be a part of it. the producers promised magic and music and there will be performances this year and we know that we are going to hear and i think it's a beautiful thing, glen campbell's final song that he wrote about his experience with alzheimer's. there he is. neil patrick harris and his husband. >> very elegant in the gray, too. that's lovely. he doesn't look nervous, although i'm sure he is, and i've been told that he was talking to john legend this weekend. >> and he said, actually, he wasn't expecting to be nervous and suddenly at the rehearsal he became nervous and this is a huge crowd and everybody knows me and this is more frightening

than i thought. >> can i just say it is refreshing to see men depart from the standard black and white. i love a navy tux. i love a navy tux and i'm worried that the white looks like they should be on a cruise ship serving salmon and that would be my observation there, but i love the gray and i don't think you can beat navy and we saw a bit of navy at the golden globes and i hope it re-emerges. >> you know you made don lemon more unbearable because he's wearing a navy blue tux. >> you are so on point. all right. did you hear that? >> did i hear midnight blue? >> the original color of a tuxedo was midnight blue because it photographed better with the flash and everything in black and white. so it's midnight blue. i think don is expressing himself as a newsman. >> do you think you will see departures? >> he wears a bow tie every day,

music and you played james bevel in the move. >> that experience is what helped me to create the song. it's an honor to be a part of "selma." it is like being a part of the movement and being able to be an extension of what dr. king and those people created at that time, so to be an actor is what generated me to be able to do a song for it. >> as i was watching it, i can't believe that there has not been a picture and a feature film about dr. king and it was the first one. >> it's something because this film actually came at the right time. as much as we know it should have been a film about dr. king it happened in divine time because when we saw what was going on in our country and saw what was going on, we needed dr. king now. so maybe through this film a lot of people are becoming educated on nonviolent protests and how to strategize to make changes in an organized way and in an intelligent way. >> so you had a lot of very strong women around you. >> yes.

>> oprah. >> ava. >> what was that experience like? >> well, i have to say this lady over there is my mother. she's a strong mother, so i grew up around that strong woman energy. >> mom! >> ma! ma! he said i have ava dubonair. and i said i grew up around a strong woman. >> i'm a mama's boy. what is your name? >> majalia. how proud are you of him? >> i am so proud of him, and i'm proud that he's at the oscars and he's going to perform, but i'm most proud of the kind of person he is. he has a good spirit. he's a kind, young man and the oscars is -- that's what he do, that's a job. i'm proud of the person he is. >> now i see where you get it from. >> it's all right here. >> it's all right here, but it took a lot of strong women like your mom to do that and this movie featured women, strong women and it showed their involvement in the movement.

>> i think that is so important to acknowledge and recognize that it was, many people say coretta scott king helped give dr. king into the movement early on. so women played such a significant part in making the change in this world that we have to acknowledge and they will continue to make an important impact and a powerful impact on changing the world. so it's great to get the love. >> what was the collaboration like with john legend? did it just flow? >> it really flowed because it was one of those moments where you just, like, i need to call john legend about doing this song and i hadn't thought what we were going to do, but i knew that we should do a song together for "selma." i called him and told him three titles and i told him glory, and he really liked that. and he wrote and gave me the piano and i was inspired to write. it was one of those that we could do this song forever because this is what we want to do this type of music.

>> so ava, did ava -- she takes the high road. she's a very bright woman and a very positive woman and there was talk about the film being snubbed and i just have to keep moving forward. we were nominated for best picture. what do you think about this talk about being snubbed? >> we're grateful to be nominated for best picture and it wouldn't be withoava and dav oyelowo. look, the movie is about the voting process. unfortunately, they didn't get voted to be best director, but they have long careers ahead, and i know that one day they'll be here as nominees and hopefully win it. i wanted everybody on our team to get nominated, but of course, it's disappointment. >> it does speak to diversity in hollywood. >> i mean, i think that's part of the process. i don't think it's, like, i don't think we can say hollywood is not just about being diverse. i think the world, as you know, we have to all have the dialogue

nominated for best picture. let's run through the list "american sniper," -- oh, you got will? let's go talk to will.i.am. >> are you proud of this guy? >> common, i was just congratulating him for his role on "selma" and for musicians to transition from, like, one thing to another thing, you know, a lot of times the art slacks. i had to congratulate him. the lyrics that you've got on this song and the performance that you did in that film, you know, to be able to serve both sides of -- of the field as an actor and still keep it thorough and awesome as a musician, and the lyricist, hats off to common. >> let's talk about the movies because i know you're a man of the music. let's talk about the movies. did you get to see many of them this year? >> i saw pretty much all of them. >> what do you think? >> what do i think about what? >> what do you think about "boyhood"? what do you think about "selma"?

>> "selma" was amazing. >> run through them for me. >> "selma" struck a cord in me because i learned things in the film that i wasn't taught in school and certain details about martin luther king, so that's the one to me that really was entertaining and it was educational and inspirational, emotional. it hit all of the buttons. so, i thought ava did a really good job for directing, but not nominated, what do you think about that? >> um, -- i -- i try not to get my emotions get wrapped up in politics and all i know is i nominated it. it hit a chord in me, and i know to me, i don't let someone else's opinion dictate how i relate to it and how it resonates within myself. so i don't even know how to answer that question. >> i think you did a fine job

heard that and it was fantastic. when you look across the american musical landscape and you think of glen campbell and you think of the songs he recorded and the career that he had from the '60s and all of the records that he played here in l.a. and his musicianship as a guitar player and all of the others that he's so well versed in and the songs and he had galveston. by the time i get to phoenix, wichita lineman, rhinestone cowboy and a huge, iconic reference and for him to go into this part of his life carrying the message that he's carrying and laying it out there for the world to see in advance of all ziemers research, it's pretty special that you can have the legacy he has and to carry something forward. >> does it make you a little bit nervous because the family is here? >> yeah. we just talked. >> it does make you nervous because you want to represent as best as you can represent, and you want to bring honor that you

welcome back to hollywood's biggest night. we are having a grand time watching all of the arrivals in the rain. you can tell that the stars are hiding under some of those umbrellas. it's sprinkling here in hollywood and apparently showers are expected. the weather service is saying they'll happen for the rest of the afternoon, but that's not going to rain on our parade, oh, no, it won't. we understand that down on the red carpet a bit of a rock star has arrived near don lemon. are you going to have a chance to talk to richard linkletter there? >> it is so loud i can -- is she coming to me? can you hear all of the screaming? yes, it is, the director of "boyhood." >> you showed up. somebody showed up. i think the applause it for you. this is a long way -- i say this because motion picture of the year, right? best achievement in directing, best writing for a screen play, all of those things and more. you started and you were on an oil rig when you were in college and then you decided you wanted to be a director and you brought

a super 8 camera and here you are. >> and add 33 years or whatever of working pretty hard and yeah, fun. it was fun how you work at something and life kind of gives you a fun journey, potentially. >> why this film? >> this film's been done a while and we premiered at sundance and it always kind of connected to people and they really can relate to it. i wouldn't have necessarily have predicted that because of the nature of the film, it's a little different, but people just saw themselves in it. >> what was the idea coming up to shoot something over 12 years. i call that -- obviously, it's bigger than that, but it's like a video time lapse. >> a film time lapse. >> yeah. >> we're telling a story about what it feels like to grow up, you know? to be a parent, to change and those relationships and how you feel different at different times. i don't know. >> you watched your daughter grow up in the movie. >> sure did. in life and in the movie, but
