4:00 pm
links first? >> let's see how it works. i suspect it will be worked out. you can follow under the circumstances us on twitter. you can tweet me. join us again tomorrow right here in "the situation room." i'm wolf blitzer in washington. erin burnett outfront starts right now. next breaking news. three brooklyn men under arrest tonight threatening to assassinate the president and hijack a plane. they were about to travel to syria to fight for isis as the fbi warns all 50 states are in darng danger of attack. the man who shot american sniper chris kyle found guilty. let let's go outfront.
4:01 pm
we begin tonight with the breaking news. three brooklyn men mirsarrested today. they were preparing the fight for isis either in syria or in the united states even vowing to assassinate president obama. the three men appeared in court today. two were arraigned in brooklyn. the third in florida. one of the three was arrested early this morning as he was about to board a flight for turkey where he would try to cross the border into syria. court documents paint a picture of three men trying to out wit the fbi and find way to get to syria and if they couldn't get there, the fbi says they were going to wage jihad in the united states killing police officers and fbi agents be p. the fbi warning states to be on alert for others who want to launch attacks. the director put it bluntly.
4:02 pm
>> we have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states. >> all 50 states every single one of them. these men have a will the of ideas of what they wanted to do in the united states if they didn't make it to syria. they talked about assassinating the president. they were willing to hijack aircraft. what else were they prepared to do? >> they were prepared to do a lot of things including the younger one saying he wanted to join the military funnel information to isis and if he was found out or got in trouble he would open fire on u.s. troops. the mother of the younger 19-year-old con fisfiscated his passport fearing he was going to travel to isis. he was able to during this
4:03 pm
investigation and subsequent arrest. >> reporter: three brooklyn men were under arrest. >> if they were not able to go they would seek to acquire weapons here handguns machine guns and seek to attack police officers. >> reporter: according to the fbi, agents first zeroed on 24-year-old abdurasul last august when he wrote on an isis affiliated website, quote, i'm in usa now. is it possible to commit ourselves as dedicated mar tirs any way while here. i'm saying to shoot obama and then shot ourselves, will it do. one week later the fbi found him at his brooklyn home. he admitted he wanted to fight with isis in syria. he also repeated his threat targeting president obama. officials say he identified 19-year-old akhror as a frepdsiend
4:04 pm
and co-worker who wanted to wage jihad. after the fbi's visit he e-mailed an administrator of the website telling them what he said. quote, i will execute obama i said. even after these words they left me alone. why? because they think i'm establishing a jihadi group. the fbi alleges over next few months stayed in constant contact discussing the difficulty and expense of traveling to syria. one proposed hijacking their flight to syria and giving the plane to isis. the complaint says he also proposed he might join the u.s. army so he can spy on it or just open fire on american soldiers killing as many as possible. the 19-year-old even went to a
4:05 pm
department of homeland security office where he was photographed and fingerprinted in preparation in receiving his new travel documents. last month he allegedly told an informant, i will just go and buy a machine gun, ak-47, go out and shoot all police. boom. then we will go to the fbi headquarters kill the fbi people. the two want to be jihadis were here at this court. they said they understood the charges against them. they are going to be detained until trial. they are scheduled to be back on march 11th. it was interesting when they walked in. they were 5'2" dark hair. both of them wearing hoodies. the charges against them are very serious. they were able to get the other two and seal the case with the
4:06 pm
help of a confidential informant. >> thank you very much. now jason carol is outside the apartment building where two of the suspects live. you spoke with the building superintendent puptonight. what did he tell you about these men? >> reporter: he's pretty much in shock. when i spoke to him earlier this afternoon he said nothing seemed out of ordinary about these two young men. he said both of them paid their rent on time. maybe lived here for two, three years. he said the younger one told him not too long ago he planned to take a vacation very soon. he said nothing seemed out of ordinary. you can imagine why there's so much shock from the people here in this neighborhood and the people today. >> jason, you spoke with the travel agent. the person who sold the ticket to one of the men arrested this morning as he was trying to connect and get to istanbul and syria. what have you learned about his
4:07 pm
plans? how he was trying to get there? >> reporter: according to the local travel agent that we spoke to here he came in last thursday just before 3:00 said that he wanted to buy a round trip ticket from new york going to istanbul. it was going to cost about $900. the travel agent said i can get you there for $571 going through kiev. he used a new york state id in order to purchase it. they gave me a copy of the i ten rare. he was scheduled to fly out at 12:30 a.m. on ukraine international airlines flight number 0323. when i was speaking to the travel agent earlier he also told me his hands are still
4:08 pm
shaking. he said it made him very comfortable knowing now that he was looking into the eye os of a terrorist last week. >> thank you very much. now, former secretary for the department of homeland security and tom sanderson who briefed u.s. special operation, special forces on isis. tom, let me start with you. some of what these men were threatening to do include, they wanted to buy a machine gun, ak-47. they wanted to shoot police, fbi, plant a bomb at a very popular place in new york coney island. shoot president obama. how easy would this things have been to pull off? >> first couple could be easily pulled off. getting ahold of a gun in this country is not difficult, obviously, and being able to kill individuals on the street even in front of the white house would not be that difficult. creating a bomb a little more
4:09 pm
difficult but setting it off in coney island not difficult. going after the president is a much more different issue. that would be impossible to do it for these three to do it. they did not have training. people are more sophisticated would make a better attempt but it would be terribly difficult. >> you have three men arrested and we'll talk about the fbi saying there's people in every state that they are concerned about. is there a way to stop an attack or is it simply a matter of time? >> we have to assume that one of these attacks or planning can happen. we're delusional to think there's all this activity and someone isn't going to breakthrough and do something. the question is what are they going to be able to do. this case this arrest showed a lot of intent. these guys wanted to do
4:10 pm
something bad. it's a less strong on capability on their ability to cause harm in the united states. i think one of reasons why the fbi arrested them wasn't simply because the guy on the plane but there's a public statement when these arrests are made and it's to potential followers of isis teenagers who think it's cool to join isis others who would travel to turkey to see what it's like which is we're taking this seriously. even if you're not that serious, we're taking this seriously, and you will be indicted and charged with terrorism crimes. i think that's an important role for the fbi even though these guys, at least, were not, did not seem that they had the capability that they thought they had in their own minds. >> tom, fbi director today came out and said there are individuals under investigation who are radicalizing in all 50 states, every single one. were you surprised he came out and said that? >> no.
4:11 pm
i'm not surprised you would find individuals in every state. there are probably thousands of young men and women who do hear the call to battle and feel radicalized or heading in that direction because of what they see online and tv. it would be a surprise that the dakotas might have individuals like there. >> we keep hearing, u.s. officials saying there's 150 americans who have tried to fight in syria, as many as. they have kept that number static for a long time. now i hear there's individuals in all 50 states and more than one in each state. that 150 kind of seems maybe inaccurate.
4:12 pm
>> sure. it could just be two or three in each state but it's very likely more than that. i don't think the fbi may have solid information beyond that 150. certainly, there's a good chance that there are. they at least know of 150 that have tried to go or who have gone to turkey into syria. >> what kind of attack could a radicalized individual in one of these states pull off domestically. you heard tom talking about the ease of acquiring gun, going to locations and building bombs? >> i think this is the challenge that the barred entry into isis or any of these organizations is relatively low. you say i want to belong. you e-mail them or go to the website. access to arms and weaponry is easy in this country. there's a lot of soft targets in this country. that's why everyone takes this issue seriously and why there's
4:13 pm
a focus on it because it is different. you can't keep it offshore. it is here. we have to keep arresting. the good news is these are not sophisticated attacked. they are low casualty plans. even the one that was successful the boston marathon attack was ultimately only four casualties over the course of that week. that's not good news for the victims but of course in comparison to 9/11 very different kind of attack. >> thanks very much to both of you. next mysterious drones showing up over in skies in paris. this is the second night in a row. who is behind these drones and would that be part of a trough plot? more than 150 christians now, that number has surged. men, women and children kidnap kidnapped by isis. will their lives be spared? people living in the nation's capitolal will be able to

tonight, mystery drones in the sky. the secret service working with french officials to identify who may be behind the drones who have flown over high profile paris landmarks for the past two nights. the city is on high alert after
4:18 pm
deadly terror attacks last month. authorities fear that the drones which have cameras would be being used by terrorists. the drones have been hovering around the eiffel tower, united states embassy and the place de la concorde. samuel, there's a lot of anxiety and fear when you talk about the eiffel tower, the american embassy. nobody know who is is flying the drones and what they are planning. >> reporter: police are out on the streets to see if this will be the third night of drones hovering over us here in paris. french people are nervous after seeing these drones over some of most recognizable and important landmarks. nothing more alarming than seening that drone over the french national assembly. that's the equivalent of the u.s. congress. this is a city that's still reeling after the double terrorist attacks at charlie heb
4:19 pm
"charlie hebdo" as well as the jewish supermarket. it's important to note that french officials seem rather skeptical of those worse case scenarios. they are stepping up the enforcement of the long standing bans across the city arresting three journalist who they allege were using drones within city limits. they were taping a story about the drones. at the end of the day french authorities say this is wake up call to them. not just because this could be the third night of drones but the ever increasing capacity of what are over the counter drones. >> thank you very much. pretty frightening when you think about it how easy to obtain the drones have been flying over other crucial sites, including one of the most important in the world, the

white house. >> reporter: we know they have him. isis propaganda shows the terror group using drones with increasingly chilling sophistication. gather aerial intelligence on targets. in paris drone sightings are sparking new fears. more than five drones spotted two nights in a row. france on high alert after terrorist attacks. france searching for whoever flew drones over more than a dozen nuclear attacks last year. latest in a series of high profile disruptions. in january a small drone invaded secret service radar crashing on the white house ground. it turned tout be an accident but it raised serious security questions. >> he had a drone come within 50

4:22 pm
we're looking at as photographers, for the images you can't get in the other vehicle. >> reporter: as the market grows, so do the number of people with access to drones including those who seek to do harm from above. paris prosecutors are telling cnn they have ruled out any connection between the connection of these three journalists and the mystery drone sightings. they are out watching tonight as well. they still have not solved the drones that were spotted flying over more than a dozen nuclear plants. almost 20 sightings in that place. they haven't been able to find those people. the mystery really does continue. >> pretty frightening that they aren't able to track it. lieutenant james reese. this is pretty amazing. you have drones flying over nuclear sites and the american embassy and the eiffel tower and
4:23 pm
special forces aren't able to figure out who is doing it. could a significant attack be carried out like drones like this? >> good evening. yes, i believe it could. i could launch a drone near an airport and fly that right into a plane taking off and try to get it sucked into its engine. it's definitely an athreat. >> they don't seem to be able to identify them or where they are coming from. you know isis is now using drones. how big of a concern are they to national security right now? >> they're a concern. we need to we're a little bit behind the power curve on what we're going to do. one of the good things about it is the drone capability for the payload of what it can carry is really still limited.
4:24 pm
that's a good thing. they can still cause terror. that's what they're trying to do. you can put a pound of tnt on there. isis aqap they have these explosive experts who know how to do this. they know how to detonate them or you could crash it into the white house and get an explosion. you won't get a mass casualty but you'll have some death and cause terrorism. >> it will when you talk about that. there was a drone flying over the white house a few weeks ago. because they're small and you talk about the payload and the fact they could carry tnt. right now the payloads are not that high. the question is is the united states able stop an attack by a drone? >> that's the critical aspect right now. i'm going to say we're not that good at it. one of the things that helps us is that the time of flight of these things are not that great. they're run by battery packs,
4:25 pm
battery power. that's one of the limiting factors that comes about it. we could use some electromagnetic aspects. it's what law enforcement got to look at and for the military oversaes overseas. >> looks like we lost that shot. pretty sobering discussion there. nextducted by isis. hundreds more on the run. numbers of christians we have reported abducted are surging. could they be facing a massacre. the congress is threatening to throw the mayor in jail. a special report. biotech to clean energy. whether your business is moving, expanding or just getting started... only new york offers you zero taxes for 10 years with startup ny business incubators that partner companies

christian hostages a lot more. we're also learning at any moment isis may release a video threatening to kill those christians. jim sciutto is out front now. we're know learning the number of christians taken hostage is so many more than we first thought, heard and feared. these syrian christians formed their own militaia. this is of grave concern. keep in mind, syrian wrss were trying to defend a place they had been for thousands of years. they were fighting for their land and sadly losing the fight. >> what do you know about this
4:31 pm
video that may be released? >> reporter: based on isis's past bloodthirsty past their m.o. is to kill them. few people survive the grasp of isis when they're looking for the propaganda value. the sad fact is the syrian leaders involved in this have received a warning there's a video coming. it's offshoot the expectation is there will be no good news in this video. >> thank you. the christians kidnapped that jim talking about are syrian christians. tonight their communities fear death as isis closes in.

4:34 pm
that have shown the level of brutality. my heart bleeds. this is just the ongoing campaign of genocide. it's targeting anyone who does not embrace this ideology who is considered a non-believer. these stories are continuing and continuing to be worse. the video will probably just confirm the horrors. >> it will be horrific. we had known there were incidents of this happening. it shocked the world when they put out a video of 21 christians being beheaded last weekend. you're now talking about 150 or more christians. if something like that were to surface, does that change what the united states does in the fight against isis? >> well i'm speaking for my own personal perspective, frankly, the last i've heard is we're talking about training the syrian army in march. we haven't started the training yet.
4:35 pm
we need to ramp this up. there's plenty of allies within the kurdish community, obviously the iraqi christian and syrian christians in syria that are willing to take up arms. they have to. they are wise. their territory. villages they have been in for 2,000 years, a generation after christ. they have been wiped out of their homes. there's plenty of individuals that their livelihoods and lives are at stake. those are the very people we should be getting behind and arming not next month but not. >> what's the point? when you look at the history of islam and so many instances incredibly tolerant of other religions living side by side in muslim communities, what is isis doing here by targeting and killing christians? >> listen isis they are 21st century terrorists embraceing a
4:36 pm
7th century acts of harborism. that is what they are embracing. they are the ideology that must be addressed. this is not just something the west or america's going to solve. the larger issue with isis is going to be solved within islam and the larger community not only needs to stand up and condemn the acts but take proactive actions. those are the arab leaders we also need to be supporting 100% in the fight. this is not going to be solved by sending 80 second airborne in
