esus premiers sunday night, 9:00 p.m. eastern. you can follow us on twitter. go ahead and tweet me. you can tweet the show. be sure to join us tomorrow right here in the situation room or dvr the show. erin burnett outfront starts right now. next breaking news. at least four teens have gone missing in quebec and investigators fear their on their way so syria to join isis. jihadi john's identity revealed. man who knows him well. a leaked united airline memo revealing disturbing pilot errors. a series of near misses. just how serious is the problem? let's go outfront.
4:01 pm
we begin with the breaking news. four teens are missing. investigators fear they're on their way to join isis. the teens were from quebec and canadian officials are searching for them. they believe the teens arrived in turkey. this comes as authorities have identified the most western isis fighters in world, jihadi john. the english speaking, black clad figure, the one who speaks and does the beheadings is a 26-year-old londoner namedd mo mohammed emwazi. we'll hear more in a moment. what do you know about the
4:02 pm
missing teens? >> the rpnc have opened their investigation. the trail has gone cold in turkey. they believe they had left to go join isis but they have no idea where they ended up. what's interesting here is they were alerted to all of this from families. families increasingly separate seeing their children were being radicalized radicalized. some of them knowing they might believe the country. canada started trying to revoke the passports of those who they think might join isis. in this case that wasn't done. families are desperate to know more. >> paula, thank you very much. we're learning more about the man believed to be jihadi john. we now know his name.
4:03 pm
mohammed emwazi. >> our knife will continue to stab the necks of your people. >> reporter: the chief isis killer known as jihadi joan nowhn now identified as moehammed emwazi. seen in a video murdering pilots. his viral videos, but also key clues for international investigators. the basic sent is from a professional class man from a professional family. he once lived in this

neighborhood. >> nice area. >> responsible polite quiet. >> reporter: he graduate frd the university of west minister with a degree in computer programming. he claimed british intelligence investigators harassed them. he turned to a group called cage. cage says it started in 2009 and he traveled to tanzzani. he claimed intelligence officers accused him of trying to go to somali and join a terror group. he said he planned to join his fiancee in kuwait. it's thought he goes onto spend eight months there before returning to the uk where he's detained again in 2010. in 2012 authorities say he went to syria according to cage. >> in terms of him feeling that
4:05 pm
he doesn't belong as part of uk society, i think that security agencies played the most crucial rule. >> reporter: months ago both u.s. and british intelligence officers claimed to know the identity of jihadi john but refeezre refused to release it. >> it's possible he will still be face of isis rather than a person in total hiding and darkness. my guess is he's going go under ground. >> reporter: he was last publicly seen in a video with kenji goto. >> you now have 72 hours to pressure your government. >> reporter: he demands $200 million from the japanese government. isis later claims to have killed both men. his identity has been considered an open secret in the law enforcement community. it's out there now. what does this mean? uk officials and officials here
4:06 pm
in the u.s. aren't filling in any of the details about his background and have not responded to this narrative of harassment that's been put forward by members of cage who were friends of emwazi at the time he was in london. >> thank you very much alex. you said you spent a great deal of time with him over the years. you knew him. the question is did you have any idea of his radical views, of the fact he wanted to go to syria and fight for isis? >> no. i didn't have any idea that he would ever want to join up with isis. he was having a very very difficult time in the uk. he was client like we have many clients being harassed by the security agencies. he was somebody we were trying to assist.
4:07 pm
>> you have seen the horrific videos videos. you've seen the still images of these horrible beheadings we know he's the man standing there, the man talking. when you saw them, did you recognize him? did you think it might be him? >> i think it's important to say that it was the journalist from the washington post who came to me and said that she had confirmation that it was emwazi that was jihadi john. i couldn't be certain that the two men were the same. the person i knew is vastly different. >> vastly different in what way? >> the person was very kind and
4:08 pm
didn't give any self-importance about himself. the person i'm seeing on the television that gentleness obviously, quite evidently doesn't seem to be there. >> you described him kind gentle humble. jihad jihadi john is a killer possibly a psychopath. when you saw the similarities in the videos over the past since last august or earlier, did you come forward to authorities and tell them this looks a lot like someone i know? >> i didn't have to because i didn't know until last sunday. it's been a few days that i knew. once again, it was the washington post that put that information towards me. >> you didn't know -- i'm trying to -- it wasn't until you looked
4:09 pm
at him closely? >> i haven't watched the videos. it's not the kind of thing i like looking at. when this whole thing started, i've read about the videos of course. i've seen it reported in the print media but i've never actively gone out looking to watch these videos. for me they are extremely disturbing and not the kind of thing that i enjoy watching or looking at or even have an interest of looking at. it's only when the journalist opened her laptop and said would you mind looking at this video and confirming for me whether or not you think it is. i watched them and i said there's a similarity there. i have to admit. i can't give you a guarantee because he's wearing a hood at the end of the day. >> let me just ask you the difficult question here. i know you're saying you haven't watched the videos and didn't and i'm sure most people would agree with that. some media outlet, including newsweek and the daily mail claim you're in a video from august 19th 2006 calling for
4:10 pm
jihad against the west outside the american embassy in london. let me play it so our viewers can see it and you can see it. >> we know it's incumbent upon all of us to support the jihad of our brothers and sisters in these countries when they are facing the oppression of the west. >> there's a link to this video on youtube posted on august 6th 2006. the caption says it's you. it has your name. is that you? >> that is me indeed. >> you're calling for jihad against the west? >> yes. in terms of i'm calling on muslims to defend themselves when they are being attacked when they're being oppressed. that's the keyword, oppression. when muslim countries are
4:11 pm
unlawfully attacked and invaded then it's the right of any nation to defend itself. i've read a lot of accounts that happened on september 11th i can tell i've read the horror of what took place on that day. i can very much understand why the american people felt the need to want to defend themselves because it's a human emotion. when a people feel that they're under attack or being oppressed like the palestinian then stla to right to self-defense. that is what the most modern conception of jihad is. it's not about overtaking anybody's land. it's not talking about maiming people and destroying them without any reason. the vast majority of muslims around the world feel is they have every right to defend themselves when an unlawful
4:12 pm
invasion colonial occupation or racism is the way they are being treated. >> when you say you support the jihad of our brothers and sisters in this country facing the oppression of the west. are you saying you support a group like isis? >> no i'm not. it's the western media and western pseudo academics that constantly perpetuate these narratives that all forms of violence are the same. just because somebody commits an act of violence in iraq, they i equate it with what's going on in palestine. >> when you say jihad, are part of the reason that emwazi become jihadi john. he heard someone like you that he looked up to at a non-profit
4:13 pm
he was seeking assistance from and that's part of the reason he became what he became? >> absolutely not. everybody in the uk know what i mean. they know i'm not talking inging about executing people. that's something i'm against in my every day work. when i talk about guantanamo on a daily because that's where i start my work from, it's due process. i recommend to any muslim group or organization or body or even fighting out there that they respect those norm of humanity that we expect when there's conflicts taking place. the idea that all forms of violence are the same as absolute nonsense it's a con
4:14 pm
sent concept about defending inging ourselves. >> thank you very much for your time tonight. next, new details about the three brooklyn men suspected of trying to join isis. the man who knows the ring leader of that group. the number of christians abducted by isis is going up higher and higher by the day. where are they and what could be happening to them? on a mump lighter note the video of the day is llamas on the loose. u.s. officials say they were about to travel to syria to fieg for isis. he's a 30-year-old man who police say organized and financed the operation. debra is out front many brooklyn where the suspects live. what are you learning? we're learning about the 30-year-old money man.
4:19 pm
he promised he would pay for his trip. he gave the 19-year-old about $1300. he took him to the travel agency here on coney island avenue in order to help them buy that ticket. he made promises he would pay for his expenses. enough to buy a weapon. if he needed money in syria then he would send cash. this according to the documents. we know he did speak to multiple individuals asking them to help to fray the cost to support the brothers. that's the code name for the jihadist. we're also learning a little bit more about him personally. kwoents e don't know we don't know when he arrived in the united states but he visa. he opened kiosks. we assumed he was using money to help fund some of these activities.
4:20 pm
he did overstay his visa. the efforts we're helping the two men who lived in the building behind me to travel to syria to join isis. >> thank you very much. you talk toed about islam. what did you talk about? >> he didn't know much about islam. thought i would be the right person to ask the questions he
4:21 pm
had. >> did you feel he was going down the wrong path? >> there was tense conversation between him and i regarding some touchy subjects about islam. one of the things i advised him to learn islam from reliable sources, not from internet. i had a sense he was going towards that path getting his information from internet. >> phil does this surprise you? >> there's a couple of things you'll have to note. this individual who was seeking guidance about whether martyrdom is the right answer. if you don't get the answer you shop around. this is looking for the person who will tell you that committing an act of violence is
4:22 pm
appropriate. >> that's what it sounds like he was doing. >> you said in some senses he reminded you of a lost man. >> because he didn't have a background in islam and learning is from teachers at school. he was kind of lost off his arguments -- about his arguments. he make statements and he didn't have background information about the statements. that's why i said he was a lost man. >> phil when you hear about that and put this together with the fbi warning which is there are people in various stages of radicalization in all 50 states and not just one per state, how hard is it to find theedsse people. how many more people are out there doing that that they can't find?
4:23 pm
>> it's not hard. it's impossible. the popular perception is the first front lines is family and friends. that's nice in theory. families and friends don't know. they will get an answer they don't want, they'll find an avenue that's more radical and more secretive. the second is you're talking about past radicalization. it's not illegal in america. we were built on radicals 250 years ago. the question is how do you start looking across the internet after all the furer, how do you look on the internet when you look at people practicing free speech to look at that one-tenth and 1% that's thinking about violence. >> in a sense it's impossible. police are saying he helped organize and finance this plan to terror operation. from the man that you knew does that surprise you that he could be in some ways the master mind of something like this? >> of course. i was surprised seeing their
4:24 pm
names on the news. his personality, he's a calm guy. >> when you hear him talk about him as a nice planman, gentleman, good to talk to. some people think it would be obvious who these people are but obviously it's not. >> there's a couple of classic character isistics characteristics. we have 15 years of this. one is the segregation in the subject's mind is one piece of life versus the piece of life in the community. please identify the people at risk. i found parents didn't know. their kids talk. if i wanted to talk to one person in this case it would be that 30-year-old. there's a human being involved somewhere and it's usually the
4:25 pm
older guy who tells the 19-year-old, the path you're going on is okay. you need somebody who is that accelerate. that's the 30-year-old in this case. next, isis abducts more christians from their homes. the number doubling in a couple of days. is there chance they can be saved? funding for the department of homeland security running out. will congress be able to make a deal in the next few hours? you know, i think about money kind of a lot. money is freedom. money's always on my mind. car insurance. credit cards. preschool. debt. cell phone bills. it's complicated. it's not easy. i am not a good budgeter. unfortunately, i'm a spender. i would love to learn more about finances. savings. investments. retirement. man: the more educated i am, the better decisions i can make in the future. there's nothing more romantic than a spontaneous moment. so why pause to take a pill?

republicans just wrapping up a meeting but not able to fund the agency. who wanted to carry out attacks in the united states. more is at stake. tens of thousands of workers and 200,000 essential employees could go without pay. tsa, coast guard, border patrol secret service would all be
4:30 pm
affected. dana bash is outfront live on capitol hill. we're hours away until dhs runs out of money. what's the hold up? >> the hold up is the republicans who are demanding that any fund will go along with the rider that blocks the president's executive actions that allows millions of undocumented immigrants to stay in the country. that's still the fundamental difference. what we understand is how republicans because they can't come up with the solution to fund the department through the end of the fiscal year they're going to try to pass a three-week stopgap measure to make sure it doesn't run out of money tomorrow night. it's not ideal. it's not 100% they can pass that but they'll try tomorrow. >> what do you think? do you think they'll succeed? >> probably. i can tell you that house democratic leaders are telling their rank and file don't vote for this. they think it's ridiculous that
4:31 pm
once again they're just continuing funding that's a couple years old and the department needs new programs and so forth to keep the american people safe, and it's time to do that. there probably will be enough republicans who don't want to have egg on their face for another shut down that they will pass this and the senate will do so as well. that just means three weeks from now we'll be having the same conversation. how are they going to reconcile these philosophical and political differences whether to fund the department and how far to push back on the president's immigration policy. >> pretty sad from washington as isis grows. isis is abducting even more christians. more than 260 christians from syria have been kidnapped. activists close to the groups are giving numbers. it was not even 100 a few days ago. now it's up to 260 as they go from village to village.
4:32 pm
ben is in iraq. this is pretty frightening when you think about it that these numbers are going up every single day. they are taking more and more christians. we keep anticipating. they are keeping reports there will be some sort of video from isis about what they intend to do with them. what do you think they're intent could be? >> this is tragic. it's part of isis' plan to take over more territories and recall the challenge, the isis troops going on into iraq and going after syrian christians in the province long standing home of the syrian christians. they're trying to take more
4:33 pm
territory and engage in culture and heritage genocide. we have seen what they have done with hostages in the past. with the males there's the potential they could kill them slaughter them put them on video. the women, perhaps marry them off or sell them into sexual slavery and sending back the elderly and those that are infirmed back into the communities. it's really a tragic situation and difficult to predict what will happen at this point. >> pretty awful when you look at the precedent here. there's not been a single moment of humanity in these situations. is anything being done on the ground by anyone? whether by u.s. special forces on any one to try to rescue these 262 christians or is it pretty much no one has no idea where they are. >> i've seen some reports that the syrian kurds are beginning
4:34 pm
to push and attack isis positions in this part of syria. that may lead to perhaps, more information and intelligence where the hostages are being held. that's being supportive based on some of the reports i've seen by american air power. you may have the advantage of if these numbers continue to swell, it's hard to hold that many hostages or at least to control them without being noticed. the reality is these are territories where isis controls the ground and difficult to capture and find the hostages. >> i have ben now on the phone from iraq. ben, i want to you about another new development today. another upsetting video that's out from isis that we got late today that shows the destruction of priceless pieces of history of anticquityantiquity.
4:35 pm
tell me why they say their doing it. >> reporter: this is a five minute video posted on the internet. it shows the mosul museum. you see men pushing one statue over after another, smashed to the floor and they go after them with sledge hammers. then you see another man with a drill defacing these famous winged that dates back to the 7th century b.c. during this video there's an unidentified man who claims they are destroying idol because that's what god has ordered them to do and they will do it even if they were worth billions of dollars. this is really part of this long term campaign by isis to eradicate any vestages of pre-islamic, non-islamic civilization. we've seen this happen in
4:36 pm
countless places in syria as well as here in iraq. we have spoke to sources in mosul that say the video is only half the story. the other half is that isis has sold many of the priceless antiquities from the museum to merchants on the black market. erin. >> it's horrible. it's like some of the militants did. you just heard ben reporting they are saying god ordered them to do this. what does isis gain by being so destructive of things like this and releasing the video. who says that's a good thing? i'm inspired by that. >> among their followers, many of them think this is exactly what should be happening.
4:37 pm
they are justifying this. the idea is they are trying to reshape the map not just erasing the border between syria and iraq but also changing the face of history and culture itself. part of this is their team to e reshape the identity in history. this is part of that program. anyone who asks the question what is the battle against isis look like. you just need to watch that video. >> all right. thank you very much. next, united airlines revealing recent string of near misses. i've got the memo that went to every pilot. some pretty terrifying things happening at one of the most prominent carriers in the world, and the safest. plus the video everyone is talking about. a pair of llamas versus law enforcement.

>> they are talking about one low on fuel and one nearly hitting ground. a plane does a fly around. it says something is wrong. it's normally not such a big deal. if you wait too long before initiating such a thing which seems to be what happened here then you're talking about a much more serious measure. why is that? this plane is coming in hundreds of thousands of pounds at hundreds of mile answer hour. suddenly they have to change the physics and go a different direction. what does that mean? that means in the cockpit a series of precise things must be done very quickly. they have to go to full power. they have to reset the flaps. they have to retract the landing gear. they have to stabilize their climb and inform the control tower. in a big jet sochlme of this may be automated. a crew still has to be in charge and a lot of stuff has to happen in a short period of time. the closer you are to the

ground the less time you have. >> say the pilots don't perform the pull up at the right moment. that's not something that happens every day. you can get it slightly wrong. that's the fear. if you don't pull up at that exact instant, what then happens? >> any number of things could happen. first, one you may not succeed. the truth is this plane is at one of the most dangerous points of any flight, which is where it's transitioning from being a flying vehicle to a rolling vehicle. if you don't get it right you can go into the ground in an uncontrolled fashion. it's not a good thing. secondly all that being done at once could create an instability in the aircraft and make it hard to manage on the ground there. if you're way up in the air you can recover from that. if you're only 100 feet or 200 feet off the ground you may not have room. what if you do power through all
