stadium and to build skating rifr rink and to build everything and that's why when they decided -- not they, when putin decided to organize olympic games architectures explained to him that mr. president, we have no space for that, that's why we must use sub tropical area. my proposal when i took part in the elections of sochi, it was in 2009, my proposal was to split olympic games in several cities. >> right. >> to organize ski jumping, by a biathlon, skiing in the mountains of sochi and not in the beach of black sea, right? well, putin said no, and it was absolutely idiotic and absolutely stupid decision. i explain why, because they
4:27 pm
spent billions of dollars, more than 50 billion dollars which is the most expensive games in the history of mankind, but nobody will use it after the games. >> why? >> because, you know, i was one in the city, and i know the tennis player from sochi, and i know swimmers from sochi. i know sailors from sochi, i didn't know hockey player from sochi, biathlon sochi and skiers from sochi. zero. that's why all of these stadiums, right? nobody will use in the future. >> and they've acknowledged this. the banks have written off -- whatever banks have basically written off any possibility of ever recouping. this is state corporation and they have said they have no chance to pay money back because this is absolutely unprofitable. at the beginning the promise to replace stadiums from sochi to the winter part of russia, to the rest of russia. now when they calculated this
4:28 pm
and they recognize that it's easier and cheaper to build new one than to replace, that's why this is real more of anthony bourdain's interview. more of our special report after the break. that's why there's ocuvite. ocuvite helps replenish key eye nutrients. ocuvite has a unique formula that's just not found in any leading multivitamin. help protect your eye health with ocuvite.

calling out alleged corruption at the kremlin comes at a hefty price. a business tycoon spent ten years behind bars after accusing putin of correction. former russian spy, he was poisoned with a deadly dose of radioactive polonium. he accused them of organizing a coup to put putin in power. his killer hasn't been caught. boris nemtsov has been arrested several times for speaking out against putin's government. here's why he says the west must wake up. >> this is a country of corruption. and i explain to you. corruption exists everywhere, including the states, right? even in scandinavian countries. but this is a problem for the united states, for canada, for the united kingdom, et cetera. for putin's russian , this is a system, not a problem. we don't have such kind of
4:33 pm
problem. this is a system. that's what he built. that's why if you are corrupted but you are loyal, and you sell for the kremlin, you are in a safe position. that's it. this is a system. this is a problem, on the other hand, for -- not for putin. for him, he builds a comfortable system. but for russian people. russian people are troubled. what means corruption? money from the budget disappears. he builds super costs for olympic games. no discussion in the society at all. big differences, much bigger than the states. that's why this is an uncomfortable country for everybody. >> there seems to be little appetite in the west, from western governments seem to have little appetite for criticizing
4:34 pm
putin or pulling for change. they seem pretty happy with the way things are. to what do you attribute this compliance or complacency? >> that's why americans must be interested in corruption up side ru -- inside russia. terrible case. this is serious. problem is that general security problem for russian people and for the rest of the world is that we build very unstable and very unpredictable system. system when everything depends on one person is very unstable. let's imagine that, for example, putin breaks his pact.
4:35 pm
what happens? nuclear power. the united nation security. what's happened with this country? result, balance, result. this is real very unstable and unpredictable country. this is important. the last point, putin, he has criminal mentality. obama is not. this is huge problem for obama. for example, when obama, for example, decided to forget about magnitsky act. this is the american act against murders inside russia. according to this act, they're responsible for murders and corruption and have a chance to
4:36 pm
have their accounts arrested and property arrested. first of all, throughout the united states and in the western world. this is the act. putin is very much nervous about this act. obama, last year in december, decided to stop this -- not stop this, but decided to not add your names in this list. >> right. >> well, in the white house, people believe that if we behave in such a way, right, putin becomes very happy and help obama, i don't know, in iran or maybe in syria, iraq. >> right. >> nothing happened. nothing happened until american rhetorics and image america like a devil country, devil empire,
4:37 pm
right? this image still exists on tv. conflicts. of course the cold war will never happen because of differences of potential of two countries. american economy is ahead of russia seven times. that's why to repeat the race, it's impossible from an economic point of view, not political. that's why. but i think that it is important for everybody, including for the states. if you want to protect security, you must protect your values. if you forget about that, finally, he will do something else. not only london, but something more. >> he seems to feel that he can pretty much get away with anything he wants. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> welcome to new russia. >> boris nemtsov was gunned down friday night.

today's rally in moscow was supposed to be led by him, had he lived two more days to see it. thank you for joining us this evening. anthony bourdain, parts unknown, jerusalem is now. it's easily the most contentious piece of real estate in the world. and there's no hope, none, of ever talking about it without pissing somebody, if not everybody off. maybe that's why it's taken me so long to come here, a place where even the names of ordinary things are ferociously disputed. where does falafel come from? who makes the best hummus? is it a fence or a wall? by the end of this hour, i'll be seen by many as a terrorist
