now. >> reporter: absolutely. this has been the concern. the u.s. describing the evacuation of these troops as a temporary relocation outside the country but the situation there is looking grim right now. the country seems to be descending into further chaos. concerns about possible all-out civil war in the country. this is coming after the u.s. embassy in sanaa was shut last month. as you recall, u.s. staff pulled out. they are having concerns what this means for the counterterrorism in the country operations there. you know the u.s. there has been targeting the leadership of one of al qaeda most dangerous and most powerful franchises in the world, al qaeda and arabian peninsula and u.s. there lost a local ally in the fight on

terrorism in that country with the removal and the pushing out of sanaa as the government president haddy was pushed out by the rebels the past few months as you recall. the state department in its statement is saying following this evacuation, quote, it says we also continue to obviously monitor the terrorist threat emanating from yemen and have the capabilities postured in the area to address them. but, of course, a lot of concerns about intelligence gathering and the terrorism there not just with the threat from aqap there, but, of course, the concerns about the possible emergence of isis there and that group exploiting the political unrest and backhold to gain a fo foothold in that country. >> the u.s. security council is meeting later today. what do you expect from that meeting, if anything, other than a piece of paper or a statement?

>> reporter: we have heard the international community and u.s. reiterating there is no military decision for the political situation in yemen. they are trying come through a dialogue that has really stalled and gotten nowhere the past few months. but it is very difficult to see that happening, talking to people there on the ground, we are hearing from people there. the situation looks very tense. and lots of concerns that these talks right now are not going to do much and that the situation is headed towards a possible civil war there. lots of concerns. >> jomana karadsheh, thank you. general mark hurtling joins

us now. i want to start from the state department spokesman say they continue to actively monitor the terrorist threats there in ye n yemen. that sounds assuring but, in reality, what does this withdrawal mean for the u.s. ability to survey and respond from any threats coming from that area? >> it's a significant issue, victor, and it's a great question, because when you're talking about pulling out the special operating forces, which, by the way, this wasn't decided after the mosque bombing of a few days ago. this was decided about a week ago. you're talking about losing all contact with the country. there's very little cia operations there. the special operations forces are now out. the embassy is closed and all of those things contribute. what we are seeing, as the report mentioned, this is not only the potential for a large civil war, but there is going to be intra-jihadi fighting.

this mosque bombing is significant, because this is something that lked wal qaeda wd not to do by zawahiri. they were told not to go bomb mosques and go after these civilian targets in yemen. it is an indicator there is fighting not only the houthi and al qaeda, but also now this mixture of small elements of isis as well into this country. >> yeah. al qaeda was quick to release a statement saying this attack was not consistent with their guidelines to make sure that the world knew that this was not an al qaeda attack. let me read another element of this state department statement. i'm going to parepai parapraise. no political solutions in yemen but what is the military situation there? >> it gets back to the

discussion the three of us had had recently you can't kill your way out of this. it contributes to eliminating the evil and the bad guys. as the houthis revoled ated ande into the country and the prime minister left, there is not a solution or a government. you really are having a failed state from a state that just a few months ago was touted, as everyone knows, as the example. when the government falls apart, chaos exists. and that is what we're fighting right now. the military solution is such that you could go in, but, again, in this kind of a situation, if forces come in, even u.n. or u.s. forces come in or any other paramilitary organizational fight, who do they fight? i hate to use the expression but a schwarz scene of bad guys. you don't know who to single out

who is who and it's difficult to have an intelligence source and some kind of government source to help in that regard. >> multifaceted problems here. general mark hurtling, thank you very much. >> thank you, victor. chilling new video of wednesday's deadly terror attack in tunisia's national museum. surveillance video inside the museum. two gunmen there and had hand grenades. at one point, a man walking down the stairs almost bumped into them. they let him go, for whatever reason, but they killed 23 other people and most of them foreign tourists. "the washington post" is reporting they fended off anti-terrorism police nearly two hours and finally killed when one of their grenades failed to explode and the police were able to shoot them. this morning, new and frightening details of friday

night's attack of the new orleans airport including the machete-wielding suspect was armed with smoke bombs and mostly la to ha molotov cocktails. what the mayor says he is disgusted and shocked for florida cops fired. 40% of the streetlights in detroit, at one point, did not work. you had some blocks and you had major thoroughfares and corridors that were just totally pitch black. those things had to change. we wanted to restore our lighting system in the city. you can have the greatest dreams in the world, but unless you can finance those dreams, it doesn't happen. at the time that the bankruptcy filing was done, the public lighting authority had a hard time of finding a bank. citi did not run away from the table like some other bankers did.

was armed with more than just a machete. >> investigators now say the suspect was carrying a bag full of molotov cocktails and smoke bombs that were in his car. the man died yesterday as a result of bullet wounds that he suffered in the onslaught. cnn's shasta darlington has more of what we learned about the suspect. >> reporter: good morning. we have new details about the bizarre of tsa agents at the new orleans airport on friday night. the machete wielding suspect known as richard white died saturday evening result of the injuries he sustained. on friday night, first white first attacked security agents with watch spread and pulled a machete from his waistband and chae chasing a tsa agent. the deputies took him down. at a press conference, rochelle

called the policewoman a hero. >> i have to say officer sleet is my hero. the man was inches away from whacking me with a machete and she saved my life and probably a lot of others not to mention a lot of injuries. >> reporter: the sheriff had new details. >> he had a bag in his hand and we didn't know that at first. in fact, all of the witnesses, obviously, so being chased with watch spray and a machete never noticed a bag. what the bag revealed was six half pint mason jars with cloth wicks into a liquid that we now know to be gasoline which you commonly would refer to as a molotov cocktail. had he a barbecue lighter in the bag. he also had a letter opener plastic. >> reporter: police are still digging in trying to understand just what drove richard white to go on this rampage.

back to you. >> shasta, thank you so much. cnn law enforcement analyst tom fuentes is joining us now. we wanted to bring you back, tom, talk about the fact we have these new details. the smoke bomb, the molotov cocktails. smock bombs were in his car. what do you think is the takeaway here from the fact that, you know, he had some things on him. surely anybody in their right mind wouldn't think they are going to be able to go into an airport with a machete, attack, then go back to his car and possibly get more ammunition in some way. >> chris ti, just said the main phrase. anybody in their right mind. i think this is an example of someone not in his right mind. now he is dead there is no way to absolutely find out what he was thinking and even if he lived and said what he was thinking, you don't know if he was really thinking it at the time. so, you know, yes, he did have this array of, i guess,

weaponry, explosives, the machete itself. thankfully he didn't have a fully automatic weapons or any other firearms that could have inflicted tremendous damage in there. nobody in their right mind is going to expect to get past tsa with even a pocket knife, much less a machete and mog molotov cocktai cocktails. he had mental problems, no question about that. >> officials say he suffered from some type of mental illness. his wife and children are being very cooperative is recognized by authorities. how much do you think they will be able to glean from this and what is the takeaway in terms of how it was handled at the airport? >> well, first of all, as far as the family cooperating, yes, there's been reports that he had mental problems, they knew he was mentally ill but he was a

jehovah witness and refused any kind of treatment so they are not surprised and i think why they are cooperative with that. as far as how it was handled at the airport, you know, tsa has determined for their tens of thousands of magnetometers in the airport not feasible for them to train and arm all of them with firearms. so, therefore, they rely on the local police department, in this case, the deputy sheriff that was on duty nearby, and she, of course, does save the day and is able to stop him, you know, by shooting him. so i think that, you know, really what more can you do? you've got the tsa guards, they were manning the magnetometer. at some point, wherever the first checkpoint is, that is where you're going to have the problem and where they did encounter hem and they did prevent him from getting any further into the. >> >> kudos to all of them certainly. tom fuentes, always good to have

some other stories developing right now. 21 minutes past the hour. four florida police officers out of a job this morning. three were fired. another right haesigned in ft. lauderdale after exchange a series of racially offensive text messages and a video portraying president obama in a derogatory way. >> in these texts it says the men criticized coworkers including african-american and making a comment about their appearance and they worked in a predominantly african-american neighborhood. police have the excruciating task of telling a father away on business that seven of his eight children are dead. three sisters and four brothers died in a fire in their home early saturday morning. the children ranged in age from 5 to 16. their mother and 14-year-old daughter survived after jumping from a window to escape the flames. there was a fire detector but it was in the basement of the home.

thawed? >> well, certainly for this administration there never was a strong relationship between the president and the israeli prime minister now that relationship is extending to the two administrations from a whole host of policies like to to deal with the palestinian stayedhood. this is something, right now, the white house certainly talking. it's not clear how much they will ever follow through on it, partly because of the invested politics and partly because of policy. certainly the next administration, whether it be secretary clinton a democratic nominee or anyone on the republican side, that relationship will be very different, both parties both likely, you know -- contenders, you know, better personal relationships with prime minister netanyahu at the table and that is probably what we will see that relationship change. it will be very interesting to

"rolling stone" magazine she was attacked at a fraternity party. discrepancies in her story emerged and that caused "rolling stone" to apologize for the article. >> reporter: we may finally learn what really happened to the woman named jackie whose story in "rolling stone own caught attention last fall. in the article, a university of virginia student named jackie claimed she was brutally raped by seven men during a fraternity party. university officials who acknowledge they did know some of the details of jackie's story months before "rolling stone" article published, they asked the police to launch an investigation. long before the criminal investigation concluded, a few important things happened. first, "rolling stone" apologized for its reporting when it became clear there were

discrepancies the woman's account. friends of jackie told cnn they were with her that night and she told a different story of what happened. they showed us e-mails and text messages that appeared to show that jackie had fabricated the man who she said orchestrated her rape. police cleared the fraternity where jackie said the alleged rape had happened. but police have always left open this possibility that jackie was raped somewhere else or on different night. now it's important to remember that the police investigation is separate from the university of virginia's internal investigation into whether they handled jackie's claim and other reports of sexual assaults correctly. >> sarah, thank you so much. let's bring in cnn's law enforcement analyst tom fun ten now. >> what questions specifically do the police need to answer? >> first of all, they need to

answer, did it occur? and what part of her accounts are true and what aren't, and is there another possibility that she was raped somewhere else. but the number of discrepancies that came up in "the rolling stone" article caused "rolling stone" to issue a partial apology i guess this past december but not a complete retraction of the entire story, so they left it open that it could have happened or something happened or someone did, you know, possibly rape her somewhere. so there is a lot of confusion about this case from the beginning, from the initial criminal investigation in charlottesville and the university of virginia to the continuing investigation that continued after the two articles appeared. hopefully, we get some answers tomorrow afternoon. >> if this story was fabricated in part or in whole, will there be consequences for this woman known as jackie? >> that's a good question. there could be. she did make the report

49 minutes past the hour right now. will amanda knox be extradited and forced back into an italian jail cell for the roommate of her former roommate meredith kercher? the case is not over. since 2007 knox has been acquainted convicted again of the same crime. an investigationive journalist is joining us now. nina, it's so informative. you've covered this roller coaster for years. as we get close to a resolution, do you think we will finally have one?

>> well, i think that we will have one in the sense that the court activity in italy probably can't go any further. this is the final appeal. the system is sort of like a tennis game. it goes back and forth and back and forth and both sides can appeal and this is the final defense appeal. supreme court has already ruled once the conviction should stand. so they will probably rule as they did before and the conviction will be upheld and that means that the issue will become a matter of whether the italians asking for her to be extradited and returned to italy. >> do you think that will happen? and do you think the u.s. will allow it? >> my sources in the state department told me they don't expect the italian government to ask for extradition. the government, the political side of the italian system is separate from the judiciary and the political people in italy probably don't want to start a

diplomatic showdown with the united states because the united states has informed them they probably will not return her and not agree to an extradition. it's hard to tell exactly how they are going to behave. i can't predict that but that is what i'm understanding. >> so if they would try to extradite her and the u.s. would not agree to that, does that make her a fugitive of the law, and what would that mean for her life if she wanted to travel? >> well, that's a really good question that you should probably ask a lawyer. i understand that if -- i mean, she certainly wouldn't be a fugitive in the united states. if the united states doesn't put it into our own justice system, she is not a fugitive here but if she were to go to canada or mexico which i assume have extradition treaties with italy, i guess the italians could ask for those national governments
