5:30 am
>> a little more subdued than many people would have been. >> that's going to be great this cycle. >> it is. thank you so much for starting your morning with us. >> "state of the union" with dana bash is up at 9:00 a.m. and again at noon with a special edition. right now it's "inside politics" with john king. the wait is over. hillary clinton makes it official today. >> don't you some day want to see a woman president of the united states of america? >> republicans rush to offer not so warm welcomes. >> if hillary clinton is going to join with barack obama and the gun grabbers and come after our guns, then what i say is come and take it. >> and forget elizabeth warren. is this man a surprise threat to a surprise coronation? >> i'm lincoln chaff fee. i'm considering a run for the president of the united states. >> plus, rand paul also jumps in
5:31 am
and rebuts republican rivals who say he's not tough enough to become commander in chief. >> i want to promote as reagan put t peace in strength. >> marco rubio is next as the 2016 race shifts into high gear. "inside politics," the biggest stories sourced by the best reporters now. a big breaking news day as we welcome you this morning to "inside politics." i'm john king. thanks for sharing your sunday morning. hillary clinton makes it official today. she wants to be your next president. with us to share the reporting and their insights on this big day, national journal's ron fourteen yeah, lisa leer, robert acosta of "the washington post." and the latest greatest edition leah malika henderson. welcome to the fray. >> thank you. hillary clinton is running for president again. she begins today in just a few hours, we're told. she will begin the overwhelming
5:32 am
front-runner for the democratic presidential nomination. it's as close to a lock as you can get. if you had to bet today, she also begins because of presidential election dem graphi demographics. she begins as the early favorite to win the white house in 2016. yet, ron fourteen yeah, as someone who has covered hillary clinton for two decades. you write formidable but can be beat, why? >> spent the last three or four days in iowa. out there specifically, they're not so sure that they want this to be a coronation. they don't want it to be. they want it to be a contest. they have doubts about her ability and willingness to do the retail politics that you have there. they're taking a hard look at martin o'malley specifically. >> they're taking a hard look at martin o'malley. we have poll graphics. she is 47 points ahead of her closest rival, that's joe biden. she's at 62%, joe biden is at 15%. we don't think he's running.
5:33 am
elizabeth warren who says she's absolutely not running is 50% behind. rick santorum went 2% to winning iowa so it can be done, but really? >> it can't be done and i hate -- i hate to do this but i have to disagree with ron. >> whoa. i'm he shocked. >> i know. i don't see it. she controls the entire democratic party. until martin o'malley or any of these other would-be challengers are ready to put on their big boy pants and come after her hard, i don't see how you do it. unless you take down the cuba queen in this case and you have to go after her. >> i completely agree with that. >> not just putting on your big boy pants, it's what's it about? barack obama, by this point in 2006, he had arrived. no offense to mar contintin o'mr governor chaffee, no offense to any of them, but they don't have the experience.
5:34 am
lincoln chaffee wants to say, she voted for the iraq war and he was disqualified. that's what senator obama did. >> does that have sway? >> no, you look at lincoln chaffee and why is he here? none of these guys, they don't come with nicole ligss. if you looked at barack obama, he came with a coalition, african-americans, he came with young people. in that way he was able to run a very effective, obviously winning campaign against hillary clinton. none of these other people. people don't know who they are. it's one thing to tear down hillary clinton. it's another to introduce yourself effectively to voters who don't know how are. >> they're not transformational inspirational figures. >> the campaign has not started. >> i don't think there's no way. there's never no way. anybody can be beat especially in today's politics. look at what's happened over the last several years. the surprises we've had, mostly
5:35 am
on the republican side. look at obama in 2008. the question is there's nobody anywhere close to her. the democratic party has made this investment. the question is she's her own biggest enemy. she's her own biggest opponent. you write a great story of the republicans preparing. they think she's going to be the nominee. they think they need to go after her for the next two years. are they a little bit worried that they fought the clinton wars on the right and they lost? >> they are worried. look at secretary clinton's pre-campaign time. she's been pretty successful. one of the reasons senator warren is not running is because hillary clinton has moved to the left. she has made progressives more aware of her positions and they're more comfortable with her. in iowa, they wants to see her campaign and a fresh tone and a new message. when it comes to her politics, she's more in step. >> the question is who is she? i remember her. you remember her when she was first lady of arkansas, then
5:36 am
first lady of the country, senator, secretary of state. nobody in my lifetime has reinvented themselves. she writes an epilogue. it's teasing where she wants to go in this campaign. she says i'm more convinced than ever that our future in the 21st century that a child grows up with the same shot of success that charlotte will. she's not saying the clintons are dead broke anymore. she did so with the mixed success working in the mississippi delta. this is a more populus hillary clinton. can she sell that? >> you can't sell what you aren't. she has to figure out who she is and sell that. i get worried when i read the stories we've seen. they pole tested barack obama and separate yourself. who is she? >> right. >> what are you going to do?
5:37 am
what are you going to do to make our country better? she can do that in an authentic way and not be what she thinks joe benson wants her to be. >> she has to thread the needle with being the fighting grandma who will fight for populus economic causes and also being someone who can bring washington back together. in the general electorate there's a desire to see washington work. we don't know if that's possible. she wants to cast herself as someone who can do that. that is a natural fit. >> it's my turn is not a compelling presidential message. >> no. >> the republicans will make generational argument. she will be 69 on election day. ronald regan was 69 on election day. >> they'll make the argument, nice woman -- >> i don't think they'll make that argument, nice woman. >> let's skip that. >> what democrats will do is say, listen, she's got this
5:38 am
experience. it might mean she's older, she's 69, but it also means she knows the ways of washington, that she knows leaders from her experience as secretary of state. i think her challenge is going to be, how does she make people excited? that's something barack obama was able to do. there's one thing to be populus but to be aspirational. >> she'll have history on her side. she will say i will be the first woman president. if you look at the demographics in the country, that's powerful, a nice weapon to have. it has to be personal. robby mook, she has more high tech people, john podesta can walk in the room and say no to hillary clinton. she's the candidate. she'll have to set the tone. robby mook said in a statement the campaign distributed. this is not about hillary clinton, not about us, of course it is, of course it is, we are
5:39 am
humble. we take nothing for granted. we are never afraid to lose. yes, you are. we are out to compete and fight for every vote. we know this campaign will be won on the ground. >> i followed one of my favorite writers, me. in 2013 i wrote a memo to hillary. people like her, think she needs to get her authentic self out there. they wrote through me in this memo to her, she needs to be accessible, vulnerable, small and scrappy campaign, she needs to show she's nimble, humble, honest, authentic. fearless. something she's never been, fearless. she has people around here who respect her, think she'd be a great president, think she's a decent person and want to show that side of her for the first time. back to your point, can she be that person. can she finally be fearless? >> that's why the e-mail thing is such a bad deal.
5:40 am
it's so counter to what she promised. >> when you surround yourself in presidential politics says so much about what you're going to do in your campaign. >> yes. >> hiring robby mook, he's run grassroots campaigns, hillary for america, not hillary for president. he's making it a grassroots campaign. he'll reach out to people, not take people for granted. mook's hiring will be the biggest factor. >> i agree. can she do the real retail politics. >> you can have the best staff in the business. the point you made about e-mails, she still has some explaining to do on that one, to the congress, i personally think it's inexcusable for somebody as the keeper of government records, you don't get to be the only person who decides this is the government's property, this is my property. you needed somebody with a clean set of eyes. >> here here. >> she didn't. here we go. >> a lot of iowa democrats agree.
5:41 am
>> this will be part of the same. a lot more to talk on hillary's big day. rand paul's temper becomes a problem in his first week as a presidential contender. marco rubio out of the gate. about to use the uh... cott scott: that's a bunch of ground-up paper, lad! scotts ez seed uses the finest seed, fertilizer, and natural mulch that holds water so you can grow grass anywhere! looking good, lad! man: thanks, scott. ez seed really works! so, how come haggis is so well behaved? scott: 'cause he's a scotty. man: oh. scott: get scotts ez seed. it's guaranteed. seed your lawn. seed it! but for people with copd, the world is filled with air. sometimes breathing air can be difficult. if you have copd, ask your doctor about once-daily anoro ellipta. it helps people with copd breathe better for a full 24hours. anoro ellipta is the first fda-approved product

weit's not justt we'd be fabuilding jobs here,. it's helping our community. siemens location here has just received a major order of wind turbines. it puts a huge smile on my face. cause i'm like, 'this is what we do.' the fact that iowa is leading the way in wind energy, i'm so proud, like, it's just amazing. big day? ah, the usual. moved some new cars. hauled a bunch of steel. kept the supermarket shelves stocked. made sure everyone got their latest gadgets. what's up for the next shift? ah, nothing much. just keeping the lights on. 5:45 am
signing a 30-year mortgage on a home. scary sure, but no match for our colossal self belief. we're supposed to do scary. without scary, we don't get to be brave. welcome back. for six plus years now republicans have made the case that freshman senator barack obama just wasn't ready to be president, yet the first three official entries into what will be a crowded gop field are, you guess it, freshman senators. ted cruz two weeks ago, rand paul this past week and marco rubio jumps in tomorrow night. cruz had a big first week, a huge jump in the poles. rand paul entered with a bigger
5:46 am
foundation but week one was rocky. questions about his temper because, yes, he gets testy in interviews when you suggest he's changed his positions, like on iran. >> if you look at the evidence that iran is not a threat, iran cannot even refine their own gasoline. there has always been a threat of iran gaining nuclear weapons. >> or on cutting off aid to israel. >> just to be precise, end all foreign aid, including the foreign aid to israel, is that right? >> yes. >> that has not been a position -- a legislative position. we have never introduced anything to phase out or get rid of israel's aid. >> or on how to treat workers, say, who entered the united states illegally. >> what becomes of the 12 million undocumented workers in the united states? my plan is very simple. it will include work veisas for those who are here. i do not support amnesty.
5:47 am
millions are crossing our border without our knowledge and causing a clear threat to our national security. >> he got testy a few times, robert, with people saying that he's been inconsistent. that's not the biggest issue. whether you can sell that to reporters, but when you're out there reporting in iowa and new hampshire, places even he conceded this week, he has to win early. rand paul to prove he's not ron paul, to prove he's a nominee. do conservatives see him as pure, as one of theirs, or does he have issues? >> his father's supporters, ron paul libertarians, they're skeptical about rand paul. is he running as a movement or confining a new centrist conservative, moderate conservative. people aren't sure where he's going. if he doesn't have that hard base of 20% that his father had in iowa and new hampshire, it will be a struggle in a crowded field. >> you'll see him on "state of the union" after this. please stay. dana bash hosting the program.
5:48 am
she asked rand paul the question, more of these testy confrontations came with female reporters so she asked him, do you have a problem? >> perception is reality sometimes in politics. if you are the republican nominee and you're on the stage with hillary clinton, female opponent, you have to pull the punches given the perception of you now? >> women have come a long way. women are in positions not because they're women but because they're intelligent. they should be equal to their counterparts. the interviewers in the last couple of days probably got it easier than what i gave to elliott spitzer on your program here probably about a year or so ago because the thing is that i'm unwilling to let people characterize things unfairly and if someone's going to write an op ed on me in the question, that's fair for them to try to do it, but it's also fair for me to try to set the record straight that they're editorializing the question. >> and you've got a frown on your face. please. >> well, you know, the problem
5:49 am
here is that rand paul has changed his mind. why doesn't he have a real answer to this? he can talk all he wants to about savannah guthrie and being a host tile interview. we all know savannah guthrie. she was not being a hostile interviewer in that instance. it seems like every time this comes up in interviews this is what sets him off. he sort of says, are you going to believe me or are you going believe your lying ears? >> or are you going to believe your videotape? >> yeah. >> his team wanted to basically run a general election strategy. they were hoping hillary clinton's announcement would come the same time as theirs. they're trying to reach out to people who don't know rand paul in a very uncharming way. he comes off as a rand spleener. it's not really how you want to introduce yourself. >> that's why it matters. in this instance he is both delusional and vulnerable. he's delusional if he thinks he hasn't flip flopped.
5:50 am
mixing up the reporters, that's not the problem, but when he has a woman from ackeney asking why he's flip flopped on immigration, 65-year-old, why he's flip flopped on iran, he responds half as temperame temperamentally, he'll kill himself or on a debate stage. he has to figure out how to control his temper. >> yet don't count him out. ron paul was right behind that. so if he keeps what he has right now, rand paul will be an impact player in iowa. can he grow enough to win and be a nominee? i want to get to this. marco rubio announces tomorrow night. this is the one i'm most interested in. he has a lot of problems. marco rubio in my view, let's talk about it real quickly, not aye lot of time, gets the american dream thing better than the other candidates. as an inspirational family story, you'll hear a lot of things like this. >> i know that every chance i
5:51 am
have ever had and everything that i will ever accomplish i owe to god, to my parents' sacrifices and to the united states of america. [ applause ] >> if he can grow inspirational, generational can draw a contrast with hillary clinton and i think people will think that's good. >> the best political athlete in the field. >> if he can grow. >> self-made donors like it, too. >> jeb bush remains a key threat. can he get the money from florida? can he build a national fundraising base? >> can he sell the fact that he's only been in the senate for a few years. he has the obama problem. >> he'll remind you he was the florida speaker of the house. >> our reporters give you a glimpse at tomorrow's news today including a sneak peak of how chris christie plans to prove his 2016 critics dead wrong. it needs to be earned... every day...

let's head around the "inside politics" table so our great reporters can share something from their notebooks. >> marco rubio tomorrow will become the second latino in the republican primary field. jeb bush when he announces might become the third one. he's been called an honorary latino, not only by his son but many folks i talked to in florida. they think he's going to give marco rubio a big run in terms of getting the latino vote. he got 60% of the latino vote
5:57 am
when he ran in florida. speaks spanish. very moderate record on immigration reform. colorado, florida in terms of splitting the latino vote. >> robert? >> in baseball spring training just ended but in new jersey a politician has been getting ready for the new political season. that's chris christie. he's been having town hall meetings in the garden state. this week he's gone to new hampshire. he believes he can mount a political comeback by talking to voters, engaging in a forum, having his personalities show. it's a crowded field. >> he's been missing for a while. it will be fun to watch chris christie. thank you, robert. lisa. >> one of the nascent questions about hillary clinton is not about her running, it's her husband. he said he would be taking a backstage rule. on tuesday two days after his wife announces he'll be in new
5:58 am
york giving an award on global health. the at end of the month he'll be headed to africa. they're saying it's better despite his political assets, it's better to let his wife take the spotlight and define herself. that may not be as easy as they think it is. we all know after several decades in the political spotlight, nobody puts bill clinton in the corner. >> we do have experience in trying to do that. >> i spent the last four days in iowa. i was really struck by the fact that if you ask any democratic official in iowa, they want a contest, not a coronation. they're going to get a contest. it's very clear that martin o'malley most likely but somebody will give her at least a run for their money because that's what they want out there. what really surprised me is how the clinton team gets this. it's a smart team they have on the ground. they know iowa, respect iowa. the leader of it, matt paul, is from iowa.
5:59 am
in addition to what she'll do with a small campaign, they'll use her celebrity to have rising young iowa politicians and to focus on some local issues that normally a president wouldn't that are important to democrats to show that she thinks her campaign is bigger than just her. >> we'll see if she can pass that test, shall we say? iowa at that hillary clinton is more than a four letter word. i'll close to this. today is hillary clinton's day, monday is marco rubio's, ted cruz is hoping to steal the thunder. the texas senator is now looking to start a conversation with national security conservatives. he's going to be in north carolina on monday speaking to the conservative john lock foundation. the central part of his speech will be that the world grew a lot more dangerous when hillary clinton was secretary of state. cruz causes a lot of grumbling among his colleagues for ignoring long established
6:00 am
protocol. his team insists the monday speech is not meant to be rude to rubio. they say it was well on the books before the scheduled announcement. they say it will be over several hours before the big event. we'll see if any bad blood comes of that. that's it for "inside politics." thanks for sharing your sunday morning. stay with cnn today for hillary clinton's breaking news on the presidential announcement including on "state of the union" which starts right now. it's d day, declare for president day. hillary clinton's announcement is hours away. this is "state of the union." hillary clinton launches another bid for the white house. the democrat who says he may challenge her. republican candidate rand paul on the clinton trust factor and expectations for hillary 2.0. good morning from washington. i'm dana bash. her announcement video is made and hillary clinton's new campaign aids have their finr
