tv show to raise questions about the doctors and their motives. good to see you. we have been waiting. how did he do? >> i think he could do as well as could be. he took about 20 minutes of his show to address these critics. i think it's interesting he waited until the first day of sweeps but he went right back at him the way they came at him and the first thing he said was he has never ever used any of these what they call "quack" remedies for personal or financial gain. >> these doctors criticizing me for promoting treatments and cures in the interest of financial gain. something i tell you every day on this program i nerv do. and they say my baseless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops.

eheld medical convictions about medical science and the specific concerns regarding dr. oz mentioned in the letter. as an academic physician. contrary to other statements i do not have any personal or professional connection thuzs to the american counsel of physicians. >> and he said why didn't you look at these people's back grounds who came out blasting he me. so he took a five-minute portion to lay out who these people are who were his critics. >> acsh dr. gillbert ross also signed the letter.

take a closer look and you see he's a convicted felon. he cost the state of new york 8 million dollars in all and two more doctors who signed the letter are also affiliated with acsh. dr. scott atlas works with him that hoover institution. >> so talk about a war of words. here we go. it's really a he said he said in this situation. it basically comes down to as a viewer as a consumer, who do you believe. >> and as you mentioned, nbc, he spoke out again. very interesting. >> the show's purpose is not to talk about medicine it's to talk about how to thrivo live the good life. we have dr. up in the middle

bar. it's not a medical show. >> so we in the television industry know that he is a doctor but do you think people at home, the viewers realize that. >> what do we call him, don? dr. oz. he comes from the harpo tree was blessed by oprah, she introduced him as dr. oz went through all the remedies. we've seen dhiem a lot of medical type procedures and give medical type information so i thought that was interesting for him to say it's not a medical show and i thought interesting that he said i will no longer uses phrases like miracle. those are some of the phrases that got him in this predicament. >> and he had to testify before congress last year.

michelle turner thank you. >> i'm not going anywhere. i'm joined now by dr. drew host of "dr. drew on call." you have been on tv yourself many many years, doctor in some cases giving medical advice to someone you haven't seen. those are big challenges right? >> they are and in my profession -- whenever someone who's not specifically necessarily a general appears in a public setting, they get scrutinized carefully and when generals show up they sometimes need get taken down a notch and in dr. oz's case he's a

teacher. and this group from stanford in the west want him to lose his way as a teacher. no one has ever taken any issue with his abilities as a cardio thoracic surgeon. why they would want to knock him down is bazar. what he does on television and as you know, television is a -- has a specific skillset associated with it and it's very different from medicine. so these guys don't necessarily understand what he's doing. >> my position has been as a doctor or any position people can be multifaceted and multi multidimensional and he made a mistake that we'll talk about later that he admitted to. so why don't these 10 doctors get that? why do they insist hes to the

lose a job? >> why don't they advise him how he can do his job better? if that's their concern, why don't they help us do that. he's trying to get people to focus on their behavior their diet exercise, all things we all agree good things. i think he does kind of step over the line he himself in the statement he put out today, says he probably did step out of line with diet supression -- >> here's what he said in times magazine column todayommendations of weight loss pills. "i wish i could take back enthusiastic words i used to take back products years ago. i have not mentioned it in a year and do not plan to return to that neighborhood."

>> he was very self critical in this analysis. he's got a learning curve too. he was never a primary care physician, it's really hard to do that. so he got overly enthusiastic read some literature and maybe not as familiar with the body of literature because that's not his field but he trusted the people advising him and he's on television so he's held to a higher standard but he's ult ultimate ultimately doing television. >> they call him "america's doctor" and they're looking at him sort of as the voice of god. but if dr. drew put the every day doctor's show on television nobody would tune into him. so do you think there's a

learning curve in terms of how much he can use television and he should be more careful? >> yes. and this is noe way to criticize the work of producers. they know how to make television but i'm certain they're the ones pushing some of this material. oh just read the prompter. you can get his attention and he has. he has a lot of eyes and ears so he can give good information. to do this so we can shape the culture in a healthy place, that's his intent, so let's help him do that. >> i know you you have to deal with some of the same sorts of things. so thank you, dr. drew. when we come right back montell

cancers and he helped her block this out. she had people following her and listening to the information, credible information and dr. oz promotes that along with all the other traditional medications. >> the doctors, the physicians say he has disdain for science and evidence based medicine. but as you know suffering from ms and your daughter dealing with hodgkins lymphoma, everything doesn't have a traditional treatment. >> but he does back traditional medication what he's talking about are complimentary things we can do. we had previously talked about medical marijuana on that show

and now -- >> they've all changed their tune. but you, quite honestly montell, you and oprah, you used to be dr. oz. there were no medical shows. did you have to deal with the same issues? >> i think we were held to really strict standards. i've tried to tape things on oz's show and he rakes yo you over the coals way more than i ever did. so, for them to say that he's a quack, is really quackery on their part and what's bothering him is the fact that these guys aren't providing the information to us as patients to be able to answer the right questions. that's what is ticking them off. >> when you gave advice or said try this or do this or just offer information, did they take your advice over their own

would be like to do this in public the same way that the speculation indicates that jenner might be doing. it's difficult process for every person every transgender person that goes through this process. it has its own unique challenges and to do this with the world watching you, makes it all the more difficult and when people have such an investment in your history and legacy like you were just discussing. i remember laying on my floor watching the olympics the first olympics i remember and seeing that historic moment. so when you add all that together i can't even begin to fathom what the weight of that must be if in fact that is what is going on. it's significant because it can be inspiring and there can be missteps that would happen but the most important thing is that

it could provoke conversations in families that might not otherwise discuss these issues and they may not realize how many transpeople are actually in their lives. >> let's talk about the sports world because bruce jenner is a reality star quite frankly. what if he had still in the sports world been a coach, do ayou think that would have made a difference? >> i do. and i'm one of the people who actually doesn't know what channel the kardashian show is on. but i know him from sports. and let's say this were coming up in sports this is an issue that hasz come up in sportsz and it will be more of an issue. i think it would have been a fascinating one if it had stayed in the sports arena and not gone fl to the reality arena.
