and hello, i'm natalie allen. welcome to the viewers in the united states and around the world. breaking news this hour, police in garland, texas, have? shot and killed two men who opened fire outside an art exhibit featuring cartoons muha. checking the suspect's car for possible explosives. the american freedom defense initiative organized the event, the mohamed art exhibit and cartoon contest. i want to show you what happened inside the building just moments after officers shot and killed the gunman outside. >> outside, a police officer has been shot, two suspects have been shot. possibly have explosives on them. that's what we are worried about right now. we are going to move y'all into

the auditorium. i need everybody to remain calm. we'll take you into the auditorium. a little further away from the front of this building. >> were the suspects muslim? >> i have no idea right now. >> i don't know anything other than that. i know, to be aware. we are going to move y'all soon to get you away from the front of the building. >> the keynote speaker was right-wing dutch politician, a photo, picture taken just before #garland shooting, thank god the heroes of s.w.a.t. team prevented the worst. fielders was placed on an al qaeda hit list over a film he made that was critical of islam. extra security was brought in for the controversial event. as the cnn's ed lavandero reports the investigation into the attack is just beginning. >> law enforcement officials here in garland, texas, say the shooting erupted just about ten

minutes before the mohamed art exhibit and cartoon contest was supposed to be wrapping up. not exactly known if organizers of the event were the ones being targeted. that is clearly the suspicion, law enforcement its operating under. an event in the works for some time. had gotten great deal of publicity. because of that there was a great deal of law enforcement perez end, surrounding this event. in fact told in the back of the building, there was a s.w.a.t. team on stand by in case anything violent like this was to erupt. we are told by law enforcement, the event lasted, whole shooting took place lasted 15 second. there were two men who drove up to the sieving cente i civic ce sedan. jumped out, shooting, they were able to wound a garland school district officer, treated and released from the hospital.

the two suspect were gunned down in the parking lot of the civic center in garland, texas. law enforcement officials do not know the identities, but fbi investigators are on the scene beginning the process of trying to figure out what the motive here was. this was an event, highly the o deskrid describe it as the free speech event the a keynote speech by a right-wing dutch politician who has been on the target list of, islamic groups around the world, they say that this was nothing more than a -- anti-islam event. great deal of controversy surrounding all of this. what many law enforcement officials here in garland worried about has taken place. back to you. >> and a spokesman for garland police said that they were prepared for something like this. joe horn talked with reporters earlier saying it could take

hours new to work the crime scene. >> our bomb unit is there. they're still working on the vehicle. and that's where we are at this time. so far as identification, we have not touched their body because they're close by the car. once that its cleared. weave will find out who they are, and exactly what was going on. we are in the process of interviewing any witnesses. along with the man that was shot. >> well the american freedom defense initiative is considered an anti-muslim group by an organization that tracks hate groups. cnn political commentator, ben ferguson, told my colleague, that organizers chose this venue outside of dallas because it hosted an event denouncing islamaphobia. >> ever since they said you have to stand with the prophet mow haemd -- prophet muhammad event.

an event they will publicize to the world. that's what they did. wanded people to make cartoons, depicting prophet muhammad in a negative light. wanted to have an art exhibit. the local community did not want this event because of these security concerns. they said we are going to have it. going to have it in the same building where they have a controversial speaker come. that was -- very appropriate al qaeda. extremism. they were speaking in this facility. we will show freedom of speech. we will not back down or cancel this. they even spent $10,000 of money on advance security. this event was controlled. you and i could not have gone without prepurchasing a ticket. how tight the security was. they knew who was in the building. exactly who the people were in that building. and they were having this kind of in a closed way. the art work was very

controversial. >> no one would dispute the right for people to have freedom of speech. especiallien this country. you know, a constitutional right. but questions being asked in some ways, were they asking for some kind of attack, not that, obviously not that any one deserved it but an invitation for asnattack if you sfloolike? >> there is going to be people that will look at this and say this is irresponsible to have something like this when you know you will need additional security you. know this could be a flash point. and they said that its exactly what muslim extremists want us to do, cower down and not have freedom of speech. they have an extremist speaker come into the same venue. they believe to recruit people to extremist idea. we are going to show that in america we will not cower don to thto -- cower down to this, and even

stand with people of "charlie hebdo." we are going to stand up to freedom. we are not going to back down or be controlled by extremists like the two gunmen. we are going to continue to do this in america. >> john vause also spoke with the mayor of garland, texas. he gave us more details on how the shooting unfolded. >> there were people leaving. two gunmen and a car tried to drive into the parking lot. jumped out with ougautomatic rifles. started firings at unarmed school security officer. he was hilt in tt in the league. transported to the hospital. he was released. the first suspect was shot immediately. the second suspect was shot, wounded. reached for his backpack. officers not knowing any idea what was in the backpack, shot him again. and he was killed. both suspects are actually still

lying at the scene, where the bomb squads are trying to check the vehicle to see if there is any bombs or whatever. we don't have any confirmation there is any bombs. but just to be safe. we have evacuated all of the businesses and everything in the area just to -- make sure no one gets hurt. and done an excellent job. a lot of help from neighboring police departments. >> at this point you believe that, that the two dead gunmen are in fact the only people involved in this attack? >> oh, yes. there is no case of anyone else. that's not to say that, that there is not another vehicle parked earlier or something of that nature. we haven't had time to check that out. that would be purely speculat e speculative. we have no other indications of anyone else being involved. >> the security guard injured, you said he was unarmed? >> yes. he does not carry a gun. >> okay. talk to me about the security persons. i understand organizers knew security would be an issue. i understand that they had gone

to great lengths to hire extra security for this event? >> i can't really personally speak to how much security that they hired the i have heard the reports. the school district who owns the building, where the event was located, had their own extra security officers there. but the city of garland had a number of security and swat teams in the area to provide additional assistance that might be needed. and, turns out that they were needed. so, most of the, probably most of the police officers in the area that had guns were all garland police officers. >> is there some concern about hosting an event like this at a school? or school district? >> it wasn't at a school, but a school building. special events center where basketball games and other things. it has a convention center. took part in. and they do rent it to the

public. so, events are held there all the time. this group wanted to rent it. there was concern, which is why we had heightened security in area. but we all swear to uphold the constitution, free speech, free assembly, and this case perhaps, free religion. they were welcome to use it. use the building. >> and -- >> the report i have right now. there were few texans in attendance. most of the people there were from out of state. >> again, free speech, yes. very much protected in this country. but this event was considered controversial. u.s. justice correspondent evan perez says law enforcen't was prepared for something to happen and is also trying to figure out if they could have stopped at take. -- if they could have stopped the attack. >> at this point there was a big concern that this is more like the attack in, in copenhagen,

where you had a free speech event, where you had people who were motivated again, by the -- by people who felt that this was going to be offensive to islam and want to take action to try to strike back against it. again this is something that the, the fbi, and federal law enforcement was aware of. this event was something that was -- ed pointed out. very controversial locally. there was already a lot of heavy police presence. and now what they're doing is, first of all trying to make sure this is, everybody is safe. there is no explosives. there is no danger to the public. but they're trying to figure out who the suspects are. whether or not there was anything that they missed that they could have tried to prevent this. they were looking for this. they were, there was a -- some intelligence. someone could be motivated to

look to do something against this event. now whether or not something was missed there. anybody who is motivated by these -- warranted posters, or online chat board, where people talk about people who are insulting islam could be motivated to attack these types of events. >> texasbott issued a statement. texas officials are actively investigating to determine the cause and scope of the senseless attack in garland, texas. this is a crime quickly ended thanks to the swift action by garland law enforcement. our thoughts an prayers remain with all those affected tonight. that's from the governor of texas. well, coming up here, we have got other news. we are following for the first time in almost a week. people who live in baltimore are free how to be outen their city regardless of the hour. that is next.

if you are just joining us, our latest breaking news from texas. police are working the scene of a shooting in garland, texas, where two gunmen were killed outside a free speech event. police shot them sunday night. right now we don't know the religion or motive thousands of the gunmen. we do know there was a contest, art exhibit for cartoons depicting prophet muhammad. the keynote speaker on an al qaeda hit list. police believe the shooters were acting alone. but have not identified them as of yet. now to baltimore, maryland. where for the first time in nearly a week there is no mandatory curfew on the streets. people danced in the streets sunday instead of protesting the

death of freddie gray. the city has been rocked by violent demonstrations since gray died last month after suffering a fatal spine injury in police custody. six officers now face charges. nick polencia was at one of the celebrations. here is his report. >> reporter: over the weekend in baltimore. much different scene. a change in attitude as demonstrations turned more into celebrations. earlier sunday, an interfaith coalition group held a rally to bring together people who wouldn't normally spend a sun day together. hours after that, we saw a group of 600 people from all age as cross the city of baltimore come here in sort of a marching band context. they want to put on a show for the people here who stayed after that rally. this is the first day in the city that it has the not had a sur k curfew. at a press conference early sunday the governor spoke about that in detail. >> we started withdrawing the

guard. truck are pulling out this morning. going to take a little while. we brought in 4,000 people this week to keep city safe. brought in 1,000 officers. 3,000 members of the guard. 3,000 volunteers to clean things up. >> reporter: one of the pertinent questions in the city remaining is when the national guard will fully withdrawal from baltimore. the governor did announce they will begin to unwind. but there has been no timetable given when all of them will be gone. >> in israel, 57 police officers are injured. 43 protesters under arrest after demonstrations in tel aviv turned violent. it all started with video of a scuffle between an israeli soldier of ethiopian descent and two police officers. the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu will meet with those involved in the coming hours. >> reporter: here in tel aviv's

central square, this is very much the tail end of a long night and long afternoon of protests. a couple hundred people left here. few police officers as well. a far cry from what it was a sh short here in the square. this started as a peaceful protest. 500, 600 protestors, blocked off main streets in tel aviv. both side there showed restraint. police and the protesters trying not to escalate too much. organizers on beth side urging it to stay the way. over the next few hours, this e vfld ae -- evolved into violent protests on the streets of tel aviv. we saw picture, windows broken on cars. cars damaged. number of police injured. number of arrests as well. police trying to calm the crowd down. trying to disperse this crowd. using tear gas, also waltter dispersing and officers on horses to break up the crowd that had gotten out of control with police. hate had become unruly on the streets of tel aviv. that had become a concern.

this was happening eight, nine, ten hours into the protests. a symbol of how much this means, how much passion and how much simmering anger there is behind what happened here. it all started a week ago. a video went viral. showed two police officers beating an ethiopian israeli soldier in uniform. that sparked long simmering tensions on the part of ethiopian jewish community here that feels look they have long been mistreated at the hands of police and authorities. that all culminated in tel aviv. anger spilled over. anger boiled over. we saw officers injured. protesters arrested. damage. destruction even on the streets of tel aviv. oren liebermann, cnn, tel aviv. in just a few days britons will vote in a crucial election.

right now it is too close to call. a poll of voting intention published sunday shows a tight race between the conservatives and labor. the conservatives have a one-point lead. keep in mind a margin of error of 3 percentage points. my colleague, errol barnett has traveled across the pond and joining us from london with more on it. hello, errol. >> good morning, natalie from outside 10 downing street office of the prime minister on what is the homestretch. last few days before the uk general election. and it's shaping up to be a fascinating one. what you just showed. there is no clear front-runner at this point. the outcome could go either way. the dominant parties of politics, conservatives, head by david cameron, and, labor, ed milliband, polling much loeser than historically. basically means they will need

to create a coalition government with parties historically on the fringe or the outskirts. scottish national party, headed by nicholas sturgeon, the u.k. independence party, nigel forage, and part of the outgoing government, headed by nick kleg. a lot of thor use that filled airwaves and rhetoric the past few weeks have been driven by some of those parties. what are thoser use? how might it affect the outcome of the election? let's bring in cnn contributor robert oakley, cnn, long time cnn viewers, will recognize him. nice new have you here. good morning to you. >> good morning, errol. >> with all the shackkeup, is a one excited about election, doesn't seem much driving it other than outside party. >> for an election which has so many possible outcomes it has been an extraordinary thing, the

parties are defensive. stuck to what spin doctors told them. nobody made any great mistakes. no gaffes. but very little passion either. and really it's not an election in which you feel that the politicians have got to grips with the electorate. they have been screened from them in many ways. people are not feeling as engaged as they should. and what has to be a very exciting election with all sorts of possibilities. >> there is some good news as well. prime minister david cameron, steadied the economy. things improved some what. people aren't necessarily giving them credit for that. that almost seems to have created space, for them to push the issues of immigration and e.u. referendum. what's the reading on the economy? >> on the economy. you have to say the co-legislation government has the had a reasonable achievement. yes, not, not, not brought -- eradicated the deficit. but brought it down considerably. and on top of that they actually created nearly 2 million jobs in the country. more than the whole of the rest, whole of the rest of the

european union put together. that is an achievement. one of the reasons for that is that the lead dems under kleg, insisted on raising tax threshold for lower paid. paid to get off benefits and into work. that is a general achievement. conservatives thought the country will say "thak very much. come back in office. finish the job." and their pitch has been competence or chaos. look at labor, borrowed and helped to create the problems for the economien the first place they say. the conservatives have unwisely made lots of promises themselves. uncostly promises. more money for nhs and tax cuts. ed milliband, said we are the party of economic, financial spovenlt trust responsibility. it would be more taking money from the rich and less from punishing ordinary working class

people. >> the interesting aspect of the rhetoric. it all comes done to promises, pledges, red leans from the parties. there is a question as to whether any of those will be held on to once a coalition government forms. because the business will need to be done. pressing the issue of immigration for example. that seems to have generated a lot of debate. what does debate senter around? >> the immigration in a sense. the two major parties have kept it down as much as they could. yes, a good vote winner for ukip. they feed into, the feelings there are too many immigrants in britain. having too much impact. and use of public services. other parties hatch played it down. they don't want to beep accused of being racist if they get the terminology wrong. and competed. extra restrictions. put on immigrants before they're they're allowed to access. and the question is whether feel will stick with ukip when it

comes walking into the polling booths and putting their cross on the paper or whether they will say, "look, they're going to win, two, three seats at most. am i wasting a vote by actually voting for them at the end of the day?" of course the european union you mention. another big, big issue. david cameron. conservatives. promising a referendum. ened of 2017. and he will negotiate. terms for britain within the eu. labor, the anti-european party. hard working, middle-classes, everybody else. it will be bad for business. and we went have a referendum on europe. if they damage the conservatives. ukip are desperate for a referendum. if they damage conservatives they will not get what they want. >> what it all comes done to.

welcome back. to the viewers in the united states and around the world, i'm natalie allen. our breaking news coverage out of garland, texas continues now. where authorities are trying to figure out the motive behind a shooting outside of an art exhibit featuring cartoons of the prophet muhammad. police shot and killed two men who opened fire outside of the event. a security officer was also hurt. a bomb squad has been checking the suspect's car for possible explosives, at last word they're on the scene there. it was described as a free speech event. the keynote speaker, right-wing

dutch politician placed on an al qaeda hit list because he made a film critical of islam. moments after the shooting. police scrambled to get people inside the building to safety wheel they secured the scene and started investigating. one woman who was inside describes what happened. >> there were military or policemen everywhere. running. and -- urging us quickly to get back inside as fast as we could. and so of course we, you know, followed their instructions. >> police say about 200 people attended the event outside dallas. one reporter who was inside the building covering the story ended up catching the tense moments just after police killed the gunman. gabrielle rojas has that. >> reporter: wrapping up. all about to leave. i was a few feet from the door when people were rushed back

inside. followed by police officers. we were told no one would be allowed to leave. police and security they held everyone in the main exhibit hall with the drawings of prophet muhammad from the art contest were displayed. swat team members told the crowd there was a shooting an officer was down with two suspects there could be explosives outside. the mood inside was still relatively calm at that point. people were just trying to figure out exactly what happe d happened. officers moved the crowd from the main hall in the arena space and asked everyone to sit in the stands. at that point the people attending the event started reading their phones trying to get information. at one point the crowd got upstet whu upset, that the draw the contest had been described as anti-islam event. they wanted us to know they did not kid it anti-islam at all. far from it. they kidded this an event to sell great the freedom of expression. freedom of speech. at a mood inside got patriotic at one point.

a lot of folks felt like this was an attack on their expression of free speech. at one point they started singing "god bless america." just before 9:00 when police started letting people out of the building to get back to their cars to get on to buses. we with members of the media escorted back to our living trucks. as the we were lead from the building to the media area we had to be surrounded by members of the swat team and you can seep it is still a very live, active situation. out here. reporting in garland, 13 eyewitness news. >> again, police have not yet identified the two gunmen. earlier i spock wike with bob b based on his experience in the c if a, he says the suspects most likely did not train in syria or iraq. >> we are going to find out what caused this, it was probably depictions of the prophet, are the people connected to the islamic state?

you know, we may never know that. this doesn't look like a particularly well organize add take. the attackers probably, i would say at this point, hadn't spent time in syria and iraq fighting. you know, i think the police certainly were prepared for something look this. even though there was no information. that there would going to be an attack. how do you think the white house is going to respond to this. and the white house is concerned. i have been talking to law enforcement over the last couple weeks. about their concern. a really truly organized assault inside this country -- oughtautomatic weapons. the fbi, police all over the united states are in high alert about this. the president cannot ignore this. he is going to talk about upping aid to law enforcement,

improving intelligence. the fact is that when you have this war going on in the middle east all across the middle east and getting a lot worsen yemen and syria and iraq. the chances of this not washing up on our shores is zero. >> we have been saying it -- while we have been covering this breaking news, bob, that understand -- the right to free speech. that this group had a right to hold this -- contest. and all over the country. they wanted to make their point. hired police for it now. we have a community there, suburb of dallas, that has the had -- evacuations. that this is going to take several hours. businesses could be impacted. tomorrow as well. what does that say for holding these types of events? perhaps it could happen in neighborhoods around this country. >> it could happen anywhere. the fact is -- the beliefs of

islam are incompatible with the first amendment. you cannot depict the prophet. it is horribly sack religious to muslims in any form. and you know, and the fact that people can so easily obtain guns all across this country. and this, there is a element in the united states, as there is in europe, that wants to push our first amendment rights. and there 'tis, inevitably going to be a conflict. i leave it up to the philosophers. you know on this whether you should test these rights with these pictures. but the point is -- when you dupe this, you are going to get a reaction. people that are either muslims or converts to muslim. violence will follow. >> the president of the group. i don't know how much you know, had known about this group, american freedom defense is n h

initiative. pamela geller is head of the group. they say this the anti-muslim movements most flamboyant figure head. and geller took to her website after the incident writing this is a war on free speech. what more do you know about her? and this group? >> well, she, i doubt that she was the target in this. she is -- comes from, you know, a set of people who oppose immigration, people with diverse views. she says if you let islam take over the united states. it is not. it will if numbers are great enough. she herself is not known for, insulting islam. or depicted the prophet. they are fairly moderate in terms of anti-muslims. so i think again going back the depictions of the prophet.

of the prophet muhammad, kidded blaspheme by many muslims. police say the gunfire lasted only about 15 second. right now they haven't given any indication of the gunman's religion or motives. still at the scene investigating. officials believe isis has carried out another deadly attack against a city in iraq. militants killed 200 yazidis. a yazidi political party condemns heinous criminal acts. isis repeatedly targeted the group and reign of terror. the italian coast guards pulled 3,700 migrants off the libyan coast. the french navy says it saved about 217 migrants in the mediterraneans also on saturday. italy has been struggling to keep up with the surge of migrants trying to reach its shores. most are fleeing violence and

pocher t poverty. e.u. parliament pass aid resolution last week calling for stronger action to help deal with influx. the death toll from nepal's earth quake is now over 7,200. and a government official warns it could still rise much higher. more than 14,000 people are injured. the search for survivors continues. but the government says the chance of finding any is now extremely slim. well, maybe not. rescuers did save this 101 year old man from the rubble of his home near kathmandu saturday. one week after the quake hit. his home was one of about 300,000 damaged or destroyed. how about that? 101-year-old man hanging on for that long.

well, thousand of people in nepal are living in tents now. and still out in the open. the u.n. says more than 3 million people are in need of food. aid groups say tough customs inspections in the country are holding up deliveries at kathmandu's airport. but the government is saying some planes are bringing unneeded supplies and all emergency shipments need to be checked. >> two women from nepal among those helping the earthquake's most vulnerable survivors. we recognize them. just so happens as cnn heroes several years ago for their charitable work in their country. we have their story. 2010 cnn hero of the year is -- >> winner of the cnn heroes award in 2010. and --

>> 2012 skrchlt cnn hero of the >> both nepalese wing the top pry. both crushed by the earthquake that devastated the country. >> we have to, take everything back. we have to start again from the down. four of our houses in the district have actually, absolutely, is absolutely gone. >> she runs a rehab center for 400 women and children. mostly victims of human trafficking and sexual violence. today she is taking on these 11 orphans because their shelter was damaged by the earth quake. she runs a home for children of incarcerated parents. when i met you three years ago for cnn heroes you kept talking about this dream project. this is it. >> yes it was on paper. now on to reality. but i figure, it took time. but i have my dream and my project. >> but now a bit of a set back with the earthquake? >> yes it has set back.
