♪ developing overnight, isis takes control of another town in iraq. as fears grow for baghdad. and new this morning, two men here at home arrested for isis connections. also this morning, police look for more suspects in the mass murders inside a d.c. mansion as a key witness changed stories about what they say happened that night. and remember that fiery plane crash on a georgia interstate? well, we've got dramatic new dash cam video that shows the plane's final moments coming up. so grateful to have your

company as always. thanks for being here, i'm christi paul. >> and i'm joe johns in for victor blackwell this holiday weekend. new this morning, isis is advancing towards baghdad after taking ramadi. it's now pushing east on the road to baghdad. this morning, iraqi security forces took back the little town isis had captured yesterday on the way to the major military base of khalidiya. now, the distance between isis and baghdad is about an hour and a half away. let's bring in senior international correspondent arwa damon. arwa, is there a chance that isis might be able to capture khalidiya air base soon. >> reporter: it doesn't seem that way. they did have the air base with strategic installations in their sights but it seems like the iraqi forces backed by the popular mobilization forces as you're called.

effectively, that paramilitary force did manage to push isis back. launching counteroffensive, according to another security force that we spoke to. regaining control over the town of hadiya, and now trying to push towards the town of huseba. so effectively for the time being, stopping the isis movement towards the khalidiya military base. of course if they're not able to capture khalidiya, they would control the entire area between ramadi and fallujah. in that case, they would pose a very serious threat to the city of baghdad. but the bottom line, even the iraqi government can claim small victories when it comes to pushing isis back. of course, key here is deadvising the kind of strategy that is going to ensure that the

gains made once again lost to isis. we see the dynamics on the battlefield shifting on a relatively small scale, but then you do have the big victories regarding as isis took over ramadi a week ago. >> and since isis took over ramadi, there's been so much talk it about the consequences of controlling baghdad. cow explain to our viewers why it is significant if ice ceus able to take control of baghdad? >> reporter: it would mean that iraq has effectively fallen to isis. this is something that no one can afford to see happen, whether you look at it from a humanitarian perspective or whether you look at it from a military perspective. and the u.s.-led coalition are not going to allow that to happen. to have a major city like

baghdad under the control of isis. it's something that no player in the region, no matter which side of the overarching political dynamic they may fall on, is going to allow see happen at this stage. >> a disturbing picture there painted. thank you so much for that, arwa damon, we will check back with you. the terror group has spread significantly in one year. and i want to demonstrate this quickly to you. those yellow areas are what they controlled, isis, look at it now in 2015. what about the significant gains in just one year, all of this, of course, as president obama said, quote, i don't think we're losing to the terror group. i want to bring in military analyst general james "spider" marks. when we talk about what the president is relying to the american people about isis, how

confident are you that the u.s. has a realistic grasp on what isis does. >> it's clearly remained our relationship with iraq and how we continue to bolster the iraqi security force, christi. this is a very critical time for the united states. i would applaud the president for saying, look, we're not losing. he has to keep his chin up, he has to be maintaining a positive approach for this thing. but i think more importantly what he needs to do at this had point is square with the american people and say, look, this is intergenerational. we have agreed in terms of our policy, that we're going to watch iraq, we're going to support our allies in baghdad. we're not going to to let baghdad fall. i think it's fair to say that baghdad is okay now as arwa indicated but what we see taking place in anbar is incredibly troubling because it adds to

that caliphate that isis is creating. >> well, we've been saying that baghdad is okay for now. it's always that "for now" afterwards. think about this last week, we were sitting here talking about al sayyed. a week ago. we've seen the fall of ramadi. we've seen the fall of palmyra in syria. moving towards baghdad, again, i think people are looking at this and wondering, can we do this via air? or are we going to have to send troops in on the ground? >> christi, really good point. it cannot be -- you cannot achieve the objective to defeat or degrade isis from the air. it just isn't going to happen. we know that. you can hold isis to a certain degree. but again, you have to create a ground presence and the strategy that the united states has taken in place is that iraqi forces are going to do that.

united states has yet to build a coalition sufficiently to really arrest isis to hold them in place and be able to push them back. that's what we're seeing right now. you are absolutely correct. the troubling picture we have right now is that baghdad might be at risk. i would tell you baghdad is in good shape. i would tell new national security council meetings there have been probably established red lines, trigger points, if you will, that says, look, if isis continues in that direction, we, united states, will increase its support but we're not going to put boots on the ground. however, we do have advisers at certain levels, that is our strategy to date. and i think we're watching it closely enough that baghdad remains okay. again, for now. that's a tactical determination. overall strategy is we're trading space, we're going to give up some ground so we create some time to continue to bolster the iraqi forces itself. >> i have so many more questions

about the american people and the iraqis. you're going to be with us all morning. we appreciate that. we'll take a break and get back to you. thank you, general marks. >> thank you. and a domestic battle also fighting isis at home. new this morning, two young men from southern california are in custody right now accused of conspireing to help isis. both of these men appeared yesterday in court in shackles. federal investigators said one of the suspects let the other use his credit card to buy a one-way plane ticket in israel. he had planned to its embark in turkey to fight with militants. the family of one of these men said the motel room was actually raided by authorities. breaking news overnight. the senate delayed its holiday weekend to vote on the international computer agency's teledata mining program. after hours of contentious debate senators shut down two issues that would allow the bulk

mining to continue. the senate will convene may 31st, next sunday, just hours before this law authorizing the program expires. attorney general loretta lynch said if congress does not renew existing programs united states will be less safe. we'll have more on that later in the show as well. new details on the gruesome murder mystery in d.c. police are now looking for more suspects involved in that killing. and why a key witness is raising more questions this morning. also, new video to show share with you from a deadly crash. a police dash cam rolling when a small plane crashes into a big atlanta highway. and now we are learning 81 people were wounded in this week's mosque bombing by isis. this happened in saudi arabia. we'll have the latest developments. stay close. and for more on how you can help refugees survive conflicts

now, this attack began around 6:00 p.m. last wednesday and it did not end until 1:24 p.m. the next day when the house was set on fire. during that siem, sav voss savopoulos's son and wife amy were bound and subjected to blunt force trauma. and there were signs the 10-year-old philip was tortured. also in the police report, there are conflicting reports from the key witness about the $40,000 that was demanded to set the family free which never happened, quite frankly. joining us right now is cnn law enforcement analyst tom fuentes and correspondent sara ganim. let's start with you, the key assistant was mr. savopoulos' assistant. according to the documents changed his story more than once. it's a little confusing, can you walk us through that? >> it is a little confusing, joe. but this person was the driver

and the personal assistant to mr. savopoulos. he would do odd tasks for him out there the day. and it seems as if this was one of those tasks he was asked to do. the problem is, joe, police outline in his interview in the days after the fire when they began to investigate this as a homicide, this person, this assistant, who was not named, he tells a very different story on several occasions. admits he actually light about several things. he admits that he lied about when he was asked to go and get this $40,000, that's supposedly this ransom money that was brought to the house. he admits that he lied about how he got the money. what it looked like if it was in a manila envelope or red bag. how many doubles it was. and whether or not they still had the paper tape from the bank on them. how he dropped it off. whether or not the car he left it in was locked or not. so these are details that add up.

why would this person lie about these things so much to police. i want to bring up something, this raises a lot of questions. this person was obviously an employee of mr. savopoulos. and the suspect who was arrested was a former employee. there's nothing in the documents, joe, that label this person as a suspect. however, police lay out the narrative in a way that makes him look suspicious. they clearly state he did not tell the truth on several occasions and then admitted to that, joe. >> all right, so, tom, you look at the situation. and you're probably pretty familiar with contradictory statements made by a witness. what does this tell you at first glance? >> well, joe, at i think at first glance, it says we have the possible person involved in the whole conspiracy. you know, these are pretty big facts to not get light or to misremember, compared to what an eyewitness saying if somebody

was tall or short or dark hair or light hair. these are significant facts and very easy to check up on by police. when was the money withdrawn? how were the arranges made? who called who on what phone or what e-mail? you know, in this case, the police will be able to have all of the phone records of all of these parties. all of the e-mail transmissions. all of the text messages and be able to determine what happened. and then, of course, the bank officials. who withdrew the money. who signed for it, how it was received, what time it was received. so many aspects of this story that really somebody that involved should not get wrong. should not get that many things wrong or undo earlier statements at that time. >> we know the suspect wint used to work for the company of which savopoulos is the ceo. you know that, plus the elaborate nature of the crime. now, to your mind, tom, does this make you think that

multiple people had to be involved in the execution of this crime? >> well, i think when the place say they believe multiple people are involved, you know, i don't think they just mean that multiple people went into the home and helped tie up the people with duct tape and commit the atrocities that took place in the home. i think they're looking at this aspect that there's some type of possibly inside job, or inside connection between wint and the employees at the company. and the assistant to savopoulos, that are involved in this thing. so i think those are the type of questions that they're going to have. as far as within the home, you know, it still requires extensive forensic investigation to rule out any other people having been in that home and been involved. it's hard to be inside of a physical premise for 18 hours and not be losing hair follicles, skin particles, other dna. and then, of course, the police then have to take every member of the family, all of the

housekeepers. any potential houseguests over the last several months including the daughters that are away at school, for matching purposes. and then look at what dna in is that house that doesn't match the people who are supposed to have been in that house. we're already seeing the one match with wint, whether there are others with that. we'll learn more about whether other people are in the home. >> yeah, referring to the dna match on dna found on a pizza crust left in the home that linked the suspect that was taken into custody. tom fuentes, thank you for that. we'll be seeing you all morning lawn. sara ganim, thanks to you. meanwhile, a nightmare dentist accused of abusing young kids, pulling out healthy teeth. making this mother so pad, she tried to attack him. now, he could finally be pun shished. plus, the senate is in session

collection to continue. eric, what does this mean for safety of americans? i think that's the first thing people ask when they hear this? >> right, and it's a little bit tough to know yet, because this program expires at the end of the month, which means the senate is off next week, it's going to come back a week from tomorrow, on sunday, with one day to find some other sort of approach to pass at the very last minute since what we've seen on government shutdowns and that sort of things. this is not just government funding. it's directly related to that nsa program. so it's tough to know yet because the time that the senate has to act hasn't fully passed. and so many times it's seen something approved in the very last moments but, you know, senate leaders are certainly

concerned at this point. >> you know, polls show most people are just concerned about staying safe. and they expect the government to do that for them. give me some sense of, if the senate does not come to some type of a deal or a compromise, next sunday night, how will it affect average americans? do you have any idea of that? >> well, it's difficult to know. i mean, this is sort of rand paul's coming out party, right? the kentucky senator, the junior kentucky senator who is opposing his own party, his own states, senate majority leader, and is sort of speaking for americans with these libertarian concerns who say that security, three and four. and he's sort of leading this debate, not just in the senate, but also into his own party and headed into the 2016

presidential race. and he's got quite a bit of support out there, at least a vocal set of supporters. and so this is say really important debate that's not going to go away. it's one that he's leading in terms of the 2016 presidential debate. so what does it mean for ordinary americans? i don't think the ordinary american really understands the ext intricate details of the nsa programs, but you do have a lot of presidential candidates making the argument. jeb bush making the point but it does put ordinary americans at risk. we've seen people inspired by message of terrorists, acting within the united states, but this further puts the united

states at risk. now, you know, we can't sort of get that answer the direct cause and effect right now. but that is a concern that a lot of not just senate leaders, but presidential candidates are expressing, which sort of shows the limited issue in the 2016 race. >> yeah, i think you're absolutely right about that. when you look at the big picture, this is something that started with mr. snowden, and nsa and raised the questions of the united states government snooping on its own people. and now, have this huge privacy versus security debate. thanks so much for that eric. >> we'll have a live report for you, by the way, from washington on the nsa votes coming up at 7:00. also ahead, healthy teeth ripped out. isn't that awful? unnecessary procedures all allegedly done by a dentist to young children. what this dentist has done now.

drive away. >> iraqi security officials say isis has seized control near the habbaniyah air force base where they're amassing and launched a counterattack to try to hold isis back. and prosecutors are saying daron wint did not act alone when killing a prominent washington family. they had point to the elaborate nature of the crime holding sarvvvas savopoulos, and his family. a florida pediatric dentist, facing abuse against his own kids as he's closed his practice now and given up his medical license. >> that's right. and just days before howard snyder closed his doors he spoke to our victor blackwell who is in jacksonville, hearing the terrifying stories of his

victims. we want to warn you, some may find this story disturbing. it's a counsel no parent likes to hear, a child screaming out of fear and possibly pain from the dentist chair. this cell phone video was secretly recorded by the boy's mother. going to the dentist is a rite of passage of sorts but what's alleged to have happened in this office at the hands of 78-year-old howard snyder was not a rite of passage. it's horrifying. for the past three weeks, there have been daily protests outside of the jacksonville florida practice. one parent so angry, she attacked him outside his office. snyder says he's done nothing wrong. the firestorm started after brandy motley wrote about the day she took her daughter to have one tooth pulled. motley said she was not allowed to sit with her daughter. >> it was suggested that kids

act better when the parents aren't in the room. they said we don't like parents in the procedure. >> reporter: mottley said she sat in the waiting room for three hours until the waiting turned to worrying. >> finally the nurse came to me and said there had been an incident. she was hyperventilating, she had blood and marks all over her. he said motley and she had left. >> in the parking lot, i saw all of her teeth were gone. >> reporter: mottley said is dr. snyder pulled not one tooth but seven. mom called police. although it shows officers responded. one wrote a report, jacksonville sheriff's department tells cnn no report was written on this incident. initially, no attorney would take her case. >> that's when i decided to put her pictures on my facebook and tell everybody what happened. >> reporter: her story went viral. and soon other parents posted

their children's pictures and claims of unwanted procedure and abuse at the hands of dr. snyder. >> i kept reading and reading, until the name dr. howard and i knew that was the same dentist. >> reporter: amanda berry is deaf. her son domenic is blind in one eye. the boy is part of a civil suit accusing snyder of assault and battery. two front teeth were removed for unknown reasons. and dommenic was terrified and told stories. >> did you cry out? >> yes, i clinged to my mom. >> because i'm deaf, i can't hear anything. to know my wild was calling for me in my name and i can't help him makes me feel lousy, makes me feel lousy. >> until now, until the dentist

and the department, we were apart, i was feeling like sad because i wasn't with you. >> reporter: her family at one point was part of that same lawsuit that since has withdrawn. they're now pursuing a medical malpractice suit represented by phillips. phillips said he represents dr. snyder's patients most of whom rely on medicaid for health insurance. >> medicaid paid. so can i cap a tooth twice? can i then pull it? can i then successfully claim benefits from all three? absolutely. >> reporter: and dr. snyder has made a fortune from medicaid. snyder has received nearly $4 million in medicaid reimbursements in just the past four years. now the florida attorney general

has launched a medicaid defraud. it claimed dr. snooier unnecessarily placed keen crown it's in mouth of a 3-year-old. the boy's family was paid $7,500 as part of a settlement agreement. a second case was filed but the documents were destroyed. >> somebody who knows pulling teeth that should be still in the child's mouth, in some cases we even have where many procedures were done except for what they came in for. >> reporter: this attorney represents domenic and more of dr. snyder's former patients. this month, he filed the class action lawsuit on behalf of these children. claiming patterns of abuse of of his child patients. an accusation that cnn discovered has been made before. according to this 2013 police report the mother of a 5-year-old patient was allowed

to sit with her daughter during the procedure. the mother told police the doctor grabbed her daughter's place and slapped her face several times. the officer noted a small sign behind her left ear. dr. snyder was not arrested. instead, the officer referred the mother to the state attorney's office. nurses in the room later denied that anything inappropriate happened. prosecutors decided not to file charges because of an improbability of conviction at trial. cnn made no fewer than five calls to dr. snyder's office to arrange an interview. none was returned. we found him in the parking lot of his office. what do you think about the allegations? >> what do i think about them? you don't want to hear. no, sir, i do. >> they're not correct. i want to be left alone, okay? >> reporter: despite the calls to police and malpractice investigation and the fraud investigations, dr. snyder is free to practice. his license is clear.

according to the board of dentistry, he's not been disciplined by the state and for these parents, it's unacceptable, they want more. >> they go to jail and never work on any other kids again. >> listen, we need to give you an update here, since victor's report, the dentist has closed his practice. and we learned overnight that he actually voluntarily relinquished his license to the florida department of health. but i want to bring in hln legal analyst and criminal defense attorney joey jackson. because you listened to all of that evidence, all of the things they've got against him, joey, how is this guy not in some sort of custody or facing some form charge at some point? >> sure, christi, good morning. it's horrifying when you listen to interviews of his patients when they refer to his office as a torture chamber it gives you a semblance of what you're dealing with. in addition to that, in addition to having other patients coming

forward as witnesses, you have former employees coming forward, et cetera. so understand there's two parallel things we can look to here. the first of course is the criminal investigation undertaken by the state attorney general's office, office of medicaid fraud. were whenever you're billing for unnecessary procedures or engaging into pat dispenses that's problematic and that, of course, is the investigation. oftentimes, the medicaid fraud and accusations, people accused of such thing, you would see either a criminal prosecution to the extent of jail time. or you can see a prosecution that ends up in some type of financial settlement to repay any claims that you should not have done in the first place. so, to be clear about that, it could end up where, yes, he could be in jail. or "b," he would be engaged in a settlement to pay it back. the second one, christi is

second allegations, certainly reports that there are class action suits from patients that he engaged in those activities. that is problematic because he could be forced to pay large ats of monetary settlements. >> the florida department of health is meeting next week and they're going to discuss what's going to happen to them. does what they had rule affect anything that the parents would be able to do in a courtroom? >> great point, christi. what happens is, they're really separate entities. and that is, of course, anytime you're a professional, you're licensed by the state. and the purpose of that, of course, is to ensure if you engage in any type of inpropriety against patients or otherwise, your license can be pulled. and we're seeing that here slew the voluntary pulling of that. there's really two entities. the florida department of health and, of course, the florida department of dentistry. and no act will determine

whether or not he'll ever be able to practice again. whether or not the pulling of or relinquishment of the license is longstanding. or permanent. the bigger concern is the dissipated assets knowing you're going to be sued what are you doing with your money. i think attorneys will be enj n enjoined to prevent him from doing anything with assets. as we go forward there's a pot of money there to satisfy any claims. >> joey, one word answer from you, a strong case, do you think the parents can win? >> compelling case from what we know. everyone is entitled to due process, of course, he has his rights and he'll assert them in court. you know, christi, it's problematic when you have people marching outside of your often, when you do things that affect children, the beautiful mother that you are, you don't want to

this video was recorded on an officer's dash cam. you can see, we'll show you it here again, there it is, the plane coming in, and you'll see in a moment, as it hits. this big plume of smoke as it took a sharp right turn there. and then we know, obviously that the plane is down. by the time the officer pulls up to the scene and you see it here, too. the plane is already fully engulfed. four people were, in fact, killed in that crash. and we do know that a preliminary report shows that the pilot radioed that he was having trouble gaining altitude. again, this brand-new video that we're getting in could answer questions. pulled from the air, the network tlc reacting to molestation charges to one of the stars in the hit show "19 kids and counting." we'll have that coming up. plus the california spill with some of nature's most vulnerable creatures.

we've got new details this morning of the scandal involved one of the stars of the hit show "19 kids and counting." a police report which alleges that josh duggar molested girls as a teen will now be expunged. meanwhile, tlc has pulled

iraqi security forces fighting back this morning against isis. moving right now, in fact, to regain control of a town seized by terrorists just miles from a basy u.s. advisers are stationed. plus, two men in california charged with conspiring to support isis. one father said his son would never be a terrorist. and the nsa program, the debate, the right to privacy versus our safety. and we've got some new dash cam video to show you. the final seconds before a small plane crashes into a georgia interstate. we're going to talk about how this cop's view could possibly

help the investigation. >> announcer: this is cnn breaking news. good morning. so glad to have you with us. i'm christi paul. >> and i'm joe johns in for victor blackwell. >> we want to start with some breaking news this morning. iraq officials fighting back as isis is marching towards baghdad. there is a fierce fight going on right now in a small town close to the military base of habbaniyah. what's going on now, isis apparently is using different tactics. they're coming across the river where there are no security forces rather than right there you see, trying to battle through front lines. miles from where u.s. advisers are situated. we want to bring in international correspondent arwa damon. arwa, what are you hearing about this base and how secure is it, is there any gain? >> reporter: the base itself, the habbaniyah military base is

fairly well fortified and secure. isis likely not able to penetrate through those areas, different front lines pose any significant threat to the habbaniyah base. what is important in all of this, though, it seems as it finally the iraqi government has managed to cobble together a haphazard fighting force that has managed to push isis back to a degree. this is comprised of the iraqi army, also those paramilitary iranian-backed shia militants which are quite effective, albeit controversial when it came to the battle. also that level of collaboration between them and the sunni tribes. we are hearing that the sunni tribes are the ones that are trying to hold the ground, while this sea of force and the iraqi army try to push isis forward. the big problem right now is

that these sunni tribes don't necessarily have the kind of weaponry needed to drive isis back, should isis decide to target them with car bombs, as has been its method of operations in the past. and we do know that isis is quite well at trying to take advantage of weaknesses when it comes to the defenses that have been put up in certain areas. so, it's still very much a moving situation on the ground, militarily speaking. but at the very least, we are beginning to see a little bit of forward momentum when it comes to the iraqi government forces trying to push isis back in this very critical territory. >> so let me ask you about the humanitarian need there. what have you seen in terms of, you know, some of these refugees, there's as i understand it, over 1,000 refugees that have left ramadi and have been trying to get closer to baghdad.

that there's a real humanitarian need? >> reporter: well, that 100,000-plus, these are people that have effectively fled since isis really began preebing into ramadi a few months ago. with the fall of ramadi, we saw around 40,000-plus families, people, beginning to flee the city. some of them did manage to reach safer ground. but a lot of them are hiding out in areas that, yes, are far away from ramadi, but are still targeted by isis by mortars. and then around 1,000 of them or so are currently stuck on one side of a bridge in anbar province. unable to cross this bridge into baghdad. we saw them there yesterday morning in the midst of a horrific sandstorm that they had absolutely no way to shelter themselves from. they are still stuck on that side of the bridge. this bridge is the only safe passage between anbar and baghdad is still closed.

we've been hearing repeated calls from the united nations about the need for more money. they simply do not have the funds needed to deal with the growing hum ing humanitarian cr. not just because of the battle with ramadi but this has been a crisis since isis barreled through and took over last summer. humanitarian organizations desperately need more funding to be able to provide for you aof the millions of families that have been internally displaced. >> arwa damon, we so appreciate the update this morning. thank you so much. isis has spread significantly in one year, going from 2014, the area in red, controlled by isis, to 2015, significant gains in one year. all this has president obama says, i don't think we're losing to the terror group. let's bring in cnn military analyst major general james "spider" marks, a national security analyst peter berger. general marks, these arctics

coming across the river, could they use the same tactics, come from behind, say, to take over habbaniyah? >> well, certainly, you want to attack an enemy where he is not. so it's not surprising we're seeing tactics by isis. bear in mind, the isf forces, the shia militia, are at this point aware of what isis is trying to do. so there are major routes that will be protected but absolutely, joe, there are adaptive measures and tactics that will be employed by isis every opportunity they. and we would hope the isf and the shia militia will do the same. >> peter, president obama has said, we're not losing to isis. does he finally need to go ahead and change the strategy? is it is possible that allied bombing runs are not enough to get the job done? >> well, part of that calculus is also what does the person

people want. americans, you know, are much more -- if you polled two years ago, a large majority of americans would have said, you know, we should not have boots on the ground. that has changed. but president obama is very firm on this point. we obviously do have boots on the ground with 3,000 fighters there. american soldiers, they all have boots, they're on ground. but the rules of engagement prevent them from doing something that i think is necessary, if we're -- if the united states and its allies are serious about taking back mosul. i think you're going to have to have american special forces advisers with the iraqi army being involved on the ground. and also forward air controllers to bring in precise air strikes. i think if you don't have those, you know, trying to retake mosul is going to be either longer or impossible. >> general, speaking of adviser, there are actually advisers at this air base, which isis is marching toward. do those advisers need to get out of there?

>> joe, they don't. they're there for a legitimate purpose. and that is to provide support to the units that are engaged. and really, they are a cohesive element that can hold those units together. but as also peter indicated, you need to have the ability to really do some precision strikes. air strikes by themselves are only beneficial if they're really targeting and striking, hitting and damaging the targets that they need to go after. and without forward air controllers and that type of support, it just simply wouldn't happen. >> so i guess you're saying that boots on the ground at least forward air controllers is the only way to stop isis? >> oh, no. no, no, no. i've got the isf, the iraqi security force, in the vicinity of baghdad. bear in mind, that baghdad, as the capital city has the best units in the iraqi military. some might say that's splitting a hair. but those are the most cohesive. those are the ones that are

going to work the hardest. and iraq has acknowledged and relied on the shia milt which are the only ones showing up in combat. it's a combination, it's a layering of capabilities downforces from the iraqis, support from the united states, air strikes from the coalition and good intelligence to hold and have a good assessment of what isis is trying to achieve relative to baghdad. >> i'd like to ask both of you to sort of weigh in on this idea of training the sunnis to step into the battle there. and why it's a good idea, or why not. let's start with you, general. >> well, the sunni tribes are certainly engaged right now. that is not a cohesive body that has a singular chain of command. that's the real issue here. a thing called immunity of command. there's a quasicoalition but a

fissure and fracture of it. you need them to show up in some faction. >> and peter berg, is there a danger going over to isis? >> i think a lot of them have either gone over to isis or acquiesced. they regard isis as a battle option right now because the shiite government has let them down. just to pick up on what general marks has said, isis is aware of the awakening that existed in 2006, with united states and basically more or less destroyed al qaeda in iraq. and isis has just issued a magazine that talks quite a a lot about this issue. and how they're going to seek

out anybody who might have been apart of this awakening movement or might be tempted to reawaken it. so isis is very concerned about this issue. in the long turn, getting sunni tribes to turn against isis is definitely the way forward. >> peter berg and general marks, thank you both. to another developing story in southern california, two young men are now in custody, accused of conspireing to support isis. they appeared in court. one of the suspects arrested at l.a.x. prosecutors say he was about to get on a flight for israel. he allegedly planned to disembark in turkey to go fight for isis. his father insists his son was innocent. >> it's impossible. my son is a gullible nice young man who i've raised and we are muslim. not practicing muslim. but he chose to pray. and basically that's probably a

mistake. he had grown his beard and all of these things, no way he gets that from us. never just an innocent human being who was traveling to go home and see his family and enjoy a stay of one or two months and then come back. >> the father says the fbi agents searched his family's motel room. if convicted, the suspects could each face 15 years in prison. and a dramatic series of events on the senate floor lasting well past midnight. it was a showdown essentially between privacy and security advocates. for now, privacy has won. senator has pushed against measures to allow the national security agency from data banking telephone lines. what happens at this stage of the game? >> good morning, christi, right now, their plan is to come back a week from tomorrow, may 31st,

to try to get a bill passed that would extend the nsa's ability to get phone data. it was very dramatic last night, as you said, i think they adjourned at 1:10 a.m. after multiple attempts to extend this law that expires on may 31st. it's not just rand paul the candidate who worked to block votes on this. paul blocked a move to extend it to june 8, he blocked a move to june 2nd. you also have democratic senators stepping in to help. senator ron wyden from oregon, blocked an attempt to extend it to june 5th. and a lot of opponents to this. that's because people want to see big reforms and maybe even an end to the program said that

it has not done anything to save american lives. the government hasn't been able to show any examples of this nsa bulk data collection program, playing a key role in thwarting any terror plots. they basically say this is not the vital anti-terrorism tool that the government says it is. >> where does the white house stand on this, athena? >> well, the white house wants to see reforms. they support the lee foreforms house that would remove the data that's collected from the hands of the government to private companies themselves. listen to what white house press secretary josh ernests had to say. >> we have got people in the united states senate right now who are playing chicken with us. they're in a situation where they're saying to try to do just a two-week extension on -- or a short-term extension. of these critical national security authorities. and to play chicken with that is

all right. do you remember this frightening scene a couple weeks ago? a single engine plane crashing on a busy georgia highway. >> that's just incredible. new this morning, video has been released by an atlanta area police officer's dash cam, showing the plane's final moment. now, this is the video that we see with the national transportation safety board released a preliminary report earlier this week. and we know the pilot radioed the control tower to say he's having trouble gaining altitude. but what exactly went wrong is still the mystery. >> okay. let's talk with cnn's saved analyst david soucie about this. david, as we said, police just released this video. we see it coming down towards the street or the highway. and there it is, that plume of smoke obviously indicating that

it had indeed crashed. how can this type of video help with the investigation? >> well, there's a lot of information here. what we do next in the investigation is come up to the scene and there's not a lot of evidence on the scene to use because of the intensity of the fire and as you know, most aircraft are made up of aluminum. it takes a lower temperature to melt. by the time you arrive at the scene, tragically, there's not a lot to go by. so these videos are extremely important. it's not varying much left or right. it's not evidently not in a stall situation. the car is doing all he could to maintain control of the aircraft. there's a lot of information to be used in the investigation. >> so that lack of evidence due to the explosion and fire part of the reason why authorities are saying this could take as long as a year? >> it is, joe. but there's a lot more to this

than the casual observer may understand, the faa also waits until the ntsb comes out with their final report then the faa takes recommendations from the ntsb and they have nine responsibilities. they go into whether or not it was certified properly, whether the pilot had his proper certifications. the thing that we'll go into is the fuel, is the fueled controlled properly, did it have water in the fuel. there's so many different aspects that you think would be simple. the pilot screwed up or the engine quit, people think those are simple conclusions. those conclusions are not taken lightly by the faa nor the ntsb in this parallel investigation. a lot to think about there, thanks so much for that david soucie. >> you better. thank you, joe and christi. the ballots are in. right now, it is looking like ireland will be the first

new developments in that d.c. murder case. police are looking for more suspects this morning. prosecutors say the man charged with the killing of a prominent d.c. family and housekeeper could not have acted alone. d.c. police chief said, quote, it's pretty obvious that there was coordinate, unquote. the attack began around 6:00 p.m. last wednesday. it didn't end until 1:24 p.m. the next day when the house was set on fire. savvas savopoulos, his wife amy, their son philip and housekeeper all killed. there are signs that 10-year-old philip was stabbed and tortured. unless in this police report, conflicting reports from key

witnesses. let's talk about the witness, sara, what do we know about what's happening there? >> this person is an unnamed witness, in the police report, christi, he was the driver, the assistant to mr. savopoulos who worked for him, but when he was interviewed by police, he told several different versions of the story of what happened. he said he was asked by mr. savopoulos to go and bring him $40,000 which police now believe was ransom money. but in the course of had his interview, he admitted he lied a couple times to police. i want to run through these. he lied about when he received a text message to go and get the money. he lied about how he got the money. where he put the money. in one version, he said he put it in a manila envelope and delivered it to a locked car in the garage of the savopoulos home. but then changed the story and said in fact, he put it in a red bag and put it in an unlocked

car in the home. there's also discrepancy about how many bundles he dropped off. and whether or not they still had the tape from the bank, the white bank tape around them. these are great questions. police said they don't believe daron wint could have acted alone in performing this crime. so that raises the question, even though this person in the police documents is not listed as a suspect, we know that mr. wint used to work for the savopoulos family, or his company. and this person is also an employee. it raises the question do they know each other? and was he involved that police now in fact say they don't believe he could have acted alone. we've seen a continuous flow of information rolling in on this for a whole week. let's bring in hln legal analyst joey jackson and criminal

profiler pat brown. pat, the assistant's story changing. what does that tell you? and if you change your story over several times, and that information appears in charging documents as contradictory, does that witness have a potential legal problem? >> you know, if you're telling the truth, and this should be a fairly straightforward story if you're telling the truth. if he got a call and said you need to pick up this money and deliver it, there's only going to be one thing that happened, it's hard to get these details completely different each time you tell a story. at the time it was going on. he wasn't in any kind of trauma. he wasn't in a mental state to be so confused. why is this story changing? it's a huge red flag. and obviously, the police are looking at him now as a possible accomplice. >> joey, what do you think? fear, confusion? and about that $40,000 ransom, what does that tell you, what does that amount tell you about wint and the others who could be involved. >> good morning, joe, good morning, pat.

>> good morning. >> i think whenever someone changes their stories there's one of two ways to evaluate that, joe. i think the first way to evaluate that is they are misrepresenting something and potentially lying. and then the other thing is shocked or confused. i may not be under any mental trauma myself but learning of the fact that my boss has died in such a tragic way could certainly impair my memory. that's one or two things that need to be explained bite can tell you this, undertaking the u.s. investigation the investigators and others are going to be looking at this computer records. his text messages. any surveillance to determine whether he was involved when you have $40,000 being brought to a home something is certainly amiss. and raises major red flags what the money is for and why it was brought there. >> pat, philip savopoulos, the

10-year-old child was allegedly tortured. why a child? and what does that tell you about the suspect in this case? it had been suggested, of course, it was going on in order to coerce the parents to come with more money. but is it possible there is anything else to it? >> well, we're talking about a guy, the main suspect, has got a history of violence and a desire for violence. he's threatened to hurt children before. . he just might like doing it. people might have a hard time understanding this but to have people in your control, he might like brutalizing them because he's psychopathic. it doesn't necessarily mean that he has to have a reason. you want to have a reason. you want to have certain motives. as human beings say, hey, there's got to be. well, the motive can be fun. we don't think it can be fun to torture a child but in his had

case, it may well be. >> joey, there seems to be a witness identification issue here. in a police report, the witness is a man with short hair, driving off in a blue porsche, wint does not have short hair. is there a problem there for the police? >> you know, joe, it could very well be an explanation. and that explanation could be that the police believes that he did not act alone. certainly, it would not exclude the primary suspect from being involved because there's so far i.d. it could mean that another party or parties were assisting him. i thinks that why the forensic evidence, we have the the pizza crust and there may be other evidence gleaned from the home, in terms of hair fibers, sweat, blooding anything else they can get to exclude suspects and exclude suspects. of course, surveillance video is going to play big in that neighborhood. and of course, where the porsche

general. thank you for being here. isis is coming across the river around the town rather than what they're known for battling through front lines. new tactic, new target it seems. do you think the iraqi forces and with the help of military intervention can actually stop them at this point? >> couple of things christi. first of all we said last saturday it was going to be a tough week for iraqi security forces in the province. that's what is happening. iraqi government is scrambling now. when you talk about what isis is doing, going around formations as opposed to going through them, you have to take into conversation other things. i check ee eed historical detai. usually you have ten to 20 days of high winds which creates things called she mals.

arwa damon was probably in one of those. you can't see. i think they're adjusting tactics to use sand storms to go around fortified position they're not as trained as they should be. this is not one of the forces that's run away. you find them first of all exhausted, secondly without reinforcement and without supplies. third, they've moved their lines. this continues to be a tough fight as isis uses the advantage of all those things against the iraqi security forces while using weather conditions in their favor. >> so when you say these weather conditions can help isis in may and june, what is the tactic there from iraq and coalition forces then? you can't just allow isis, right, to continue to push forward for two months. they inch closer and closer to

baghdad. >> it's what we call in military condition of the battlefield. you have to fight through it. you have to be reinforcing forces. that's what the iraqi government is attempting to do by sending the pmu militia units tout reinforce. you're talking thousands of those lining up behind the government security forces to prevent further incursions by isis. >> representative richard engle said i don't think the american public is ready for another full war in iraq. it keeps coming up should ground troops be sent in. polls last month said isis is a more serious threat than iran, russia, south korea or china. i'm wondering, do you think at any time the fear of isis and what should be done to stop them might supercede the fear of war?

>> i don't think so. every has the reaction to tactical defeat which is what this week was in ramadi. everyone is saying let's send forces. i've got to remind everybody, once you send forces, they're there for a long time. even when america forgets forces are there. the decision to send forces is a tough one. >> stay close to this. i want to bring in arwa damon there. what are you hearing there on the ground? >> reporter: well there's been it seems finally -- this was much needed -- a level of collaboration between the iraqi security forces, these shia military units and sunni tribes. at least when it comes to battle space around the town. from what we're able to gather from security forces, sunni tribes are left to hold

territory while dshia fighting force advances. sunnis are left behind. that may not be ideal, but they don't have the weapons to push back isis. the shia militaries, iraqi security forces better armed for that particular task. this is significant in the sense that at least in this battle space we are beginning to see this level of cooperation. we have been hearing from a number of tribal leaders and senior officials in the province. they wanted to see this shia force come in. clearly the iraqi security forces were unable to get the job done themselves. they want to see a real concerted effort to arm the sunni tribes. this is where the government could find itself in a bit of a delicate position. even though it is at the requests of the leadership that this military force went in, the government needs s ts to make t

murder case. police are looking for more suspects this morning. prosecutors say the man charged for the killing of a prominent d.c. family and their housekeeper could not have act a ed alone. the d.c. police chief said it's obvious there was coordination. the attack began 6:00 p.m. last wednesday and is ended 1:24 p.m. the next day when the house was set on far. savv savvas savopoulos, his wife amy, their son and their housekeeper. there were signs 10-year-old phillip was stabbed and tortured. also in the report, conflicting reports from a key witness about the ransoms. sarah, what is going on with this witness? >> joe is an employee of mr. savopoulos. his his driver and assistant and

would run daily tasks for him. he said he got a text asking him to bring money. $40,000 which police believe was ransom money. he told police several different versions of the story. for example, he told police he first received the text message thursday then changed to say it came on wednesday. another discrepancy. he changed the location of the dropoff. he said that a the car where he left the money was locked. then he said it was unlocked. same location, i'm sorry, different circumstance. he changed the time in can which he says -- i'm sorry, changed the amount of -- the place he put the money. he originally said he put it in a manila envelope and left it in the car. later he change had td that to bag. there's a discrepancy in the

amount of cash. a picture shows two bundles of cash. one had the red tape around the bundle. the man that went and received the money from the teller said there were four. there's a discrepancy, this driver, who remains unnamed in the documents. he said he was there at the bank when money was withdrawn and later changed to say he was not. all of this police say it's clear daron wint could not of acted alone. this raises the question, who else was he acting with? could this person have possibly known wint? wint was also a former employee of mr. savopoulos. did they know each other? was he simply doing as he was told and dropping off the

latest. i understand this cleveland cop was involved in a 22 minute police pursuit of a couple and fired 49 shots. >> reporter: yeah, this case happened in 2012. from what we're told, over 137 shots fired by several officer who is participated in this chase. it was discovered the folks inside the car were not armed. of course cleveland has been waiting for this verdict to come out. the judge held it several days. it was known they were going to release this information over the weekend. we've talked to people who said they were given a heads up. people talk about ferguson and baltimore. we know this community has been working extra hard to make sure when this verdict comes out the community stays calm. we're told michael brelo stood on top of the car, on the hood and fired into the window of that car. this angered a lot in the community. in fact, a lot of questions

about whether or not cleveland was going to be considered the next ferguson. community members have been working hard to make sure this doesn't happen again. the verdict will come out in an hour and a half. we'll stand by live to find what information comes out in this court case and how they move forward as a city. >> we understand this will happen in an hour and a half. we're going to hear this verdict. i assume there's a lot of security there. >> reporter: well actually right now we don't see a lot of security. some of these court cases. i've been to baltimore and ferguson. you don't see the cops on the street now. the national guard did get alerted about the situation. we're not sure if they're anticipating anything happening here. a lot of conversations with gang members, community leaders, church leaders to make sure nothing happens here like in other states. we don't know the verdict yet. everyone is standing by. as we drove downtown this morning, no extra security

precautions, nothing out of the ordinary. everything looks like a normal saturday morning. >> ryan young, we appreciate it so much. ryan young in cleveland waiting for that verdict to be read. we'll bring that to you when it happens. joe? also in cleveland, new details involving the 12-year-old shot and killed last november by a cleveland plolice officer after a police officer mistook his pellet gun for a firearm. there are also reports six months after the controversial shooting, investigators have not interviewed the police officer in question, timmy lowman. meanwhile, a report this week reveals police officials wanted to charge rice with aggravated menacing and inducing panic. what's your response to this

report that the police officer in question has not been interviewed? a number of officers apparently were interviewed. they were put in statements, so called garrett statements were taken out because some was a bureaucratic matter as easiedy to -- as opposed to police matter. we're hearing the officer tha r fired the weapon has not been interviewed? >> any experienced investigator should know it fits the amendment right. none of this matters. anything they say would be self-serving. in a crime fighter's dream, you have everything on video. it's almost immaterial what they have to say self-serving or no. you have it there for your review. the only question they have to answer is whether or not a crime was committed likely.

that's probable cause. people are arrested for far less everyday in america. >> you do point out he has the right to not make statements? >> yes. a high profile case like this begs the question, what's the delay for ironically or maybe not, today is the actual six month anniversary of at thtamir passing. >> let's talk about the notion of charging rice with aggravated menacing or whatever. what do you think of that? it was clear what we had was a 12-year-old holding a pellet gun police mistook for a firearm. the notion they wanted to charge him in this takes it to perhaps

a different level? >> certainly. first of all, if there's any mistake in belief i suggest on the part of the police officer by the attack they took. what we do know, and if you look at walter scott, there has been a pattern and an effort by some law enforce. -- law enforcement to cover their behavior or mistakes. >> you said we're approaching the six month an verse sniversa. we had the sheriff giving update on the investigation and why it's taking so long. sounds like bureaucratic nightmare. why do you think it's taking so long? what do you think about the amount of time? >> well, there's really no explanation for amount of time other than they're hoping this will die, and they can sweep this under the rug. >> he says it's a bureaucratic problem really.

a member of the public if you're not paying attention. >> how do police move forward with this? what do you think police should be doing? obviously they're on alert. how do they move forward this weekend? they're goi >> they're going to continue to investigate. this is not something that comes as a shock to us. the threats are real. added attention and protections are immediated a are needed and i'm sure in place. >> in your time with hell's angels, what was the most alarming thing to you, your take away with that investigation? >> the all-in belief in the club, the club name, the patch they wear. it's the bible they live by. it's the religion they follow.

as we saw, they will fight for it and kill for it and die for it. >> what is their religion? what are they fighting for? >> they're fighting for their brother hood. they're fighting for territory, reputation, prestige. they all want to be the king of the mountain. they want to be the big boy on the block. anybody that challenges them is in in the way standing between them and that agenda. >> you were talking about their arsenal and guns they have access to. where do they get the money? does drugs infiltrate this? >> well, narcotics and every other kind of crime you can imagine. extortion, prostitution, drug running, gun running. money is not an issue for these guys. they know how to make money both legally and illegally. money is not what is going to stop them from being able to get

to feed people in poor villages after the hunt. the rhino horn is worth more than gold and silver and cocaine one said. he wanted the horn ee edwanted. that. >> there's been 1200 killed by poachers in the last year. we as a nation say no, let's not value rhinos just for their horns. you africans, even if you're poor and going to feed your family with proceeds of selling rhino horn, you can't do it. we want to protect this species and allow future generations of this animal to live. we in the united states, it's okay for a rich guy to shoot a rhino for its horn. what hypocrisy is this? what moral reasoning is this. >> how do we save animals?
