7:00 pm
just a reminder an update in breaking news. our coverage of that continues throughout the night and again at 11:00 eastern. however, that does it for this hour. "cnn tonight" starts now. >> this is cnn breaking news. >> the breaking news is hundreds of heavily armed corrections officers swarm a small town in up state new york. are they closing in on two escaped murderers? this is "cnn tonight." i'm don lemon. here's what we know. police going door-to-door as they hunt for two convicted killers. police believe a woman planned to pick them up after they escaped, but, at the last minute minute, she changed her mind. police say joyce mitchell has turn today police and has not been charged. so jason, there is big news tonight about this joyce
7:01 pm
mitchell the prison employee that investigators questioned after the escape. tell us the very latest on that? >> a couple things. as you mentioned, authorities believe she had initially planned to pick up david sweat and richard matt. but at the last minute possibly, she may have changed her mind. this is part of the investigation. she is cooperating with the investigators. also they've taken a look at her cell phone, don. they believe that her phone was used to make several calls to people who knew richard matt. again, unclear if she made the calls or somebody else made the calls. again, this now part of this investigation. also this evening, her son coming to her defense saying there is no way his mother would do anything to cooperate with two violent criminals. >> she is not the kind of person that's going to risk her life or other people's lives to let these guys escape from prison.
7:02 pm
>> he's not the only one coming to mitchell's defense. we also spoke to two of mitchell's neighbors earlier today. both of them had nothing but nice things to say. apparently all of this has been too much for her. over the weekend, she checked herself into hospital complaining of nerves. >> so yeah son, you've been covering this and following it very closely here. let's talk about the man hunt now. does it seem as if police are any closer? do you understand if they have any new leads? or any new tim sns. >> they did had one tip coming in last night. two suspicious men walking around during a storm outage. those two men ran and raised some red flags. that started a massive search out here earlier today starting at about 10:30. a number of law enforcement on the ground also in the air. we're standing here on one particular property where law
7:03 pm
enforcement members were walking shoulder-to-shoulder through the property greg bigelow's property, into the backwoods. it wasn't just a search on the ground, don. they also checked out security cameras. not only from residents here but also from businesses in town, as well. so far, that has turned up nothing. so it must have been a frustrating day as some sort of a possible sighting, perhaps. and then after an exhaustive search, still nothing. don? >> jason carol reporting for us. speaking of residents, darren dara lives right in the middle of the search. darren, good evening to you. how did you find out that this massive hunt for these two murderers was in your hometown right in your backyard? >> about 10:00, my cell phone started going off in my pocket. >> was it someone calling you?
7:04 pm
was it an alert? >> facebook, actually. all sorts of people making notations and i looked at some of the pictures. i said that's my front yard. >> your reaction? >> i've got to go home. >> i can imagine. so you immediately went home and what did you return home to? >> i returned home to a massive amount of people all over everything from state troopers to federal marshals. i had to go through roadblocks just to get to my driveway. and then, of course, all of the media. >> is this your worst concern living somewhat near a prison? >> actually it wasn't a concern because we're so far from the prison. we're about 40 miles. it never crossed our mind. so last night, we said we want to lock the doors and take the keys out of the cars. something you don't do in a small town. >> absolutely.
7:05 pm
you had been in touch with a lot of your neighbors. you said you got home to see so much police presence what are they telling you? are people terrified? >>. >> i wouldn't say terrified, but certainly concerned. this doesn't happen in a small town like this. and have such a presence. >> so you returned home. you spoke with your neighbor. you said your next door neighbor saw two men in his yard. tell us about that? does he think it might with the two men. ? what's going on here? >> it raised enough concern in which he made a phone call. i probably would have done the exact same thing. >> is this an area where you see a lot of strangers? gl no, it's not. that's the point. in a small town, you know who's walking up your street. you know if it's someone you need to stay away from.
7:06 pm
we don't have a street light. we don't have -- it's a very small town. so go on your neighbors see these two guys. did they look out of the ordinary? >> well anyone that you see at night in the pouring rain walking down the street, you kind of question. when you confront them and they take off running, your concerns get heightened and you make a phone call. who knew that it would turn into all of this. i'm really happy that we have a response. >> it's a big, open area that they're looking for. what does your gut tell you? do you think it was them? >> what's that? >> what does your gut tell you? do you think it was them? >> my gut tells me, yeah, i think it was. but, you know who's to say? it's quite a distance. but in four days in four days, you can go a long way.
7:07 pm
>> 40 miles is not that far. you may think it is, but it's not that far. >> so darren dara, stay safe. >> all right. thank you. i want to bring in the former assistant director of the f.b.i. who led the team and also stuart kaplan is an former special f.b.i. agent, now, he is an attorney. if the men are in the woods, how much easier is it to capture them now if they're on foot? >> well it does somewhat simplify things, don. it's a localized man hunt. it's not a nationwide fugitive hunt. it really does make things in one sense, more difficult because it's manpower intensive. they have to create a perimeter and close it up so tight that a rabbit couldn't get through it.
7:08 pm
>> as i was listening to dara he says we don't even have a street light. i'm sure there are little houses that are abandoned or whatever take us behind the scenes on this man hunt. it doesn't mean that they're there, it means that they're looking for the possibility that they're there, correct? >> that's correct. we don't know how credible this sighting was or possible sighting was. so there's a lot of guesswork involved here. >> as you say, there's barns, empty buildings, they can invade someone's home and hold them hostage, which has happened before. >> i did not want to mention that possibility. that's a very frightening possibility. a reporter from a local paper says two inmates used a small e electrical saw powered by extension cords to cut their way
7:09 pm
to freedom. how on earth could they have gotten these tools? >> a correctional institution is similar to an educational institution, a hospital institution. they too, have a tremendous infrastructure of maintenance personnel, plumbers, electricians, carpenters. all of that type of equipment is all readily available just to keep up with fixing pipes, fixing electrical issues. so that type of equipment would not surprise me to be present and readily available in a correctional institution. >> so we spoke to a resident there just a moment ago who said his neighbor saw two men he thought were suspicious. and that one of them was carrying a guitar case. what do you make of that? what would be the purpose? >> well i mean to me you
7:10 pm
know eyewitness accounts sometimes are not as reliable. i'm not so sure what to make of someone carrying a guitar case. obviously, these two men are on the run. they're desperate. they're going to resort to desperate measures. they need food, they need clothing. they need financial assistance. my biggest concern would be to anybody living in the area will be locked tight. these men are going to resort to getting those type of clothing food to sustain themselves especially with the climate in the add ron daks right now where it does get very cold at night. >> do you think they were looking to get food and water in
7:11 pm
their hands? or the possibility of a boat? >> i think that they're imp vising all the way through now. i think they'll take advantage of whatever is available. it depends on what they have to sustain themselves right now. they're probably going to have to commit crimes to get any means to sustain themselves. >> thank you. appreciate you. >> you're welcome. >> you're going to come back. i'm sorry, i've just been told that. we have much, much more. plus the police officer caught on camera at this texas pool party. he resigns. i'm going to talk to some of the teens who were there. also, orange is the new plaque. that show is a fictional relationship between a prison card ga and a female inmate. there's even a name for that syndrome. and we've got a closer look. that's coming up. this is the samsung galaxy s6 edge. it comes with built-in wireless charging capabilities. the iphone 6, yeah, nope, not so much. check it out.

the man hunt heats up for two escaped murderers on the loose somewhere in up state new york. back with us now, former assistant director of the f.b.i. as a matter of fact, they could be anywhere. it doesn't just have to be in up state new york. that's where they're centering that search right now. the possibility that they even look like that now? can they be disguised, obviously different clothing wigs make-up to cover tattoos?
7:16 pm
>> certainly with the reporting of how well prepared they were. and certainly with the amoubt of time that probably went into this preparation to get the head start that they now have i would not be surprised if they are wearing some sort of disguises to include just articles of clothing facial hair maybe wigs obviously in an effort to evade detection. but, don, i'll make it very clear. and, of course since it's an on going investigation, you know the f.b.i. that's out there, they're the best-of-the-best. in the age of technology where all of these devices leave footprints i would rest assure that they ever putting together this puzzle. i would not be surprised if it would not be too soon before these two men are captured. >> how much do you think it put
7:17 pm
them off that they woman that was supposed to pick them up never showed up? >> i think they expect today be in a car and very far away from where we think they are now. so yeah this is a bad situation for them. we think they're on foot. although there's a possibility that they could have gotten their hands on a car, stolen a car. and i don't think they'll be able to get out of the area in that matter. i don't even think disguises will help them at this point. >> tonight, cnn interviewed richard matt's accomplice in the 1987 murder. he said that matt murdered the man right in front of him. here it is. >> torture is probably an understatement. once he -- at different points during the commission of what was the crime there, he used
7:18 pm
duct tape to tie mr. richardson up. he beat him with everything and anything that he possibly can. a knife sharpener, security device for the club from the automobile. he grabbed his hands and pulled his fingers back until they snapped. and in a fit of rage he reaped into the car, grabbed mr. richardson by his neck and snapped his neck in front of me. >> why is this man in any type of a facileityfacility? >> unfortunately, as the years go on and part of the problem with our correctional institution as it is today, you know people forget and that's just an unfortunate situation. certainly for the victims of these type of crimes. someone gets convicted and they
7:19 pm
get sentenced to life without parole. as the years go on these men are able to gain fail voor and they're able to get a little bit more freedom. a little bit more latitude. it seems in this particular case maybe now this correctional institution is going to pay the you will malt price by giving these guys a little bit too much freedom to get access to what they now have been able to accomplish synonymous with the famous clint eastwood movie, "escape from alcatraz." an interview with his son says my father has a genius i.q. why did they not have him under surveillance?
7:20 pm
why wasn't here under heavier security chris? >> it's a large institution. everyone in there is a violent criminal. and these people as you mentioned, these people are sociopaths. they can assume an institutional identity and do whatever it takings to convince people that they're on their best behavior. it looks like that was the case here when in fact, this guy is an apex predator. >> would the guard know how cunning he is? >> i'm sure they have a profile on him. i think they do agree with the complacency. there's so much routine activities and they just get complacent. the other access is prison guards are very low paid and honestly you don't get the best of the best in prisons. >> when we come right back caught on camera the police

experts say oftentimes the guards who initiate these relationships have a psych psychological condition. >> it's the sexual attraction to someone who has committed a terribly outrageous act. >> one notorious case includes that of bobby parker. she disappeared in 1994 along with a convicted murderer named randolph dial. prosecutors say the two fell in love while parker insisted she was kidnapped. a jury convicted parker but she served only half of a one-year sentence. >> she very often believes she is the one who can save him. >> even if it's consensual any sexual contact between an inmate and a prison staff member is illegal.

said as far as he's concerned, the reaction by this one offer was terrible. but this had nothing to do with race. the town is not that way, the police department is not that way. do you agree with that? >> i do not. i think if you look at the stories that have come out by various parties that were in attendance from the situation involving certain adults they were using racially charged language. you will you know from the young man who filmed the video who remarked that he was just so interesting and surprising to him that, as cops were tussling other african american men to the ground that he was literally skipped over. when you look at all of those things in totality you can be the walk away -- or not think that race was a factor. >> so definitely you think race was a factor in this. as i understand there was a

7:42 pm
what do you guys think of that? >> i think, you know, in a properly administered scenario yes, but as you can clearly see from the video, this officer's conducts from his rambo-like entry on to the scene to his just you know running around in a very erratic way, that's not how you affect an orderly dispersion of a crowd. if you're giving the folks you're trying to disperse commands stay here leave, and i think the statements that came out today pretty much support the fact that his conduct was inappropriate. before i go i have to ask you, how is the young lady in the
