say we are probably about seven miles from where the prison is located. this chunk of 374 closed off since last night. that's when there was some sort of suspicious sighting that triggered all of this. once that happened new york state police asked residents who live in this affected area to stay inside to leave their outdoor lights on to leave their doors locked. as of this morning, the saranac central school district closed as a result of the ongoing search. in this particular area you remember when new york's governor told the public to be vigilant and lookout for anything that might be suspicious. but they have to follow-up on every lead as if they might be the lead that takes them to these two fugitives. that's what's happening right now. this particular section still closed. we are hearing it is at least going to be closed throughout the morning. chris? jason, thank you very much. these developments come just hours after officials were suggesting that the convicts may have fled to vermont. why vermont?
4:01 am
we are live outside the prison with the answer to that and new information on the female employee may have been involved in this entire situation. paul what do you know? >> reporter: chris, yesterday we heard from the governors of new york and vermont in a press conference. they said that the search area would expand to the neighboring state of vermont. they have concerned that from the very beginning these individuals likely fled the area. we heard from one of the officials saying that in their eyes it is believed that the two individuals who fled over last weekend likely thought that at least vermont would be seeing a less police presence. now the two states are working together in the paperwork for states from both sides to be able to cross state lines. so this morning we know officers are combing this area while the police presence is very intense not far from the prison itself. we know the police officers also in vermont right now are canvassing several wooded areas and focusing on some of the campgrounds handing out flyers
4:02 am
with warnings for individuals and pictures of the two folks on the run. 800 officials have been reiterating this much over the last few days. meanwhile, we are learning more about the possible link between one woman, a female employee at the correctional facility and one of the prisoners here. specifically talking about joyce mitchell. we heard from her daughter-in-law responding individuals escape. one of the relatives there, paige mitchell her daughter-in-law saying quote, 95% of what is being said is untrue. she also goes on to say it's apalling to me and i'm totally disgusting anyone thinks she had a relationship with these men and would knowingly help them out. so clearly we are getting to hear really from more members of the community and people directly linked to some of the possible key players in this case. and back on the ground here in clinton county i can tell you there's still an increased police presence. you heard from jason a few moments ago, we are on the other
4:03 am
side of the road block here. just to put things in perspective for you, looking over my shoulder that's the clinton correctional facility that the two individuals escaped from six days ago. so it really does offer perspective into how close this manhunt is to where it all started. >> it sure does polo. in terms of the proximity of the things here's where the prison is situated. here's cadyville, new york. for more information, we'll bring in tom fuentes, our cnn law enforcement analyst. as well as michael alec who was released from prison last year after serving 17 years after a murder conviction. nice to have you both here. we need both of your information this morning. tom, let me start with you, what's happening right now as we see inside that seven-mile
4:04 am
square search area? >> reporter: well, allison, they have been using every resource possible in that area to look for them as they shelter in a place, have they gone into an abandoned cabin or an occupied house to seek shelter? because after this many days out, they need to eat, they need food water, if they are going to try to get out of the area they need wheels and cash. but i think at this point they would probably try to hunker down and ride this out. and try to survive. the other thing is that at night it's extremely cold at night. it's been raining there. they probably weren't prepared to be in the woods and try to survive that way. so chances are they have found some kind of a shelter to hide in. >> and we know it's a rural area as we said, seven square miles. so tom, how will police search every barn every home every abandoned shack? >> reporter: well, that's why they have several hundred officers doing that. they will try to search every barn every home every shack. and then have the helicopters in
4:05 am
the air by day trying to look for suspicious people. and at night when they can use infrared more effectively. look for the images of warm bodies running around on a cold forest floor. unfortunately, that also picks up animals, deer bear and other large mammals that would be warm-blooded and moving around. but it may give them the possibility of zeroing in on them if they try to move at night. >> okay michael, i want to turn to you. you spent three years aed the clinton correctional facility. there's new information this morning that really suggests that this woman who was the prison tailor, joyce mitchell played some sort of a role. so you are not surprised, why? >> it happens all the time. every facility i've been in has had some kind of scandal where a female civilian usually not an officer, in the tailor shop or the commissory or whatever is
4:06 am
having a relationship with an inmate. >> how does this happen? aren't the guards watching out for that? >> you would think so but they are not really. you are vigilant about it and after a few months you become complacent and it goes in cycles. but, you know there's a lot of opportunities. >> there's a lot of opportunities. in other words, they are left alone. >> yes. >> they are left alone to have some sort of romantic relationship. >> that's not why they are left alone. >> during the course of being left alone for a long period of time? >> yes, several hours. >> i was reading, there's a big question about the power drills or power tools the guys used to get out. everybody said they are noisy, how could they possibly have used any sort of power tools? what's the answer to that? >> they are noisy but not as loud as the inmates -- they have things to attach to their boom boxes to make them so loud.
4:07 am
and they are so loud to rattle the gates in the cell. >> so in the middle of the night, inmates are playing loud music, so loud that it reverberates from cell to cell. why is that allowed? >> i don't know. i suppose they make decisions and weigh the pros and cons. and the pros outweigh the cons. they want to keep the inmates happy on some sort of level so there's not an uprising and causing problems and fighting with the officers. and they do have to keep some order, so there's a balance there. >> doesn't that answer the question of how they could have made all this noise breaking through the walls, if the music is just you know throbbing? >> that was never a question in my mind because -- anybody -- the first night you spend in prison that's the first thing you notice. what is going on? it is like new year's eve every night. >> how much would you say the inmates there are trying or
4:08 am
plotting a break out? >> well, i mean everybody sort of has it in the back of their minds, can i -- is there a hole in the wall over here? or how sturdy is that door? how realistic -- i don't think many people are realistically thinking how am i going to break out. the whole time i was in prison i knew one person who tried to get away. and he was caught the minute he stepped five feet out of bounds. >> tom, i want to bring you back would you be surprised if in fact these guys are just five miles away from the prison? they are not in mexico or canada still in the area? >> reporter: well, from what we heard, i would not be surprised at this point that if whoever was going to pick them up whether the employee or someone else didn't show up and they came up out of that manhole cover and looked around and their ride was not there, then they were stuck with being on foot unprepared in the woods trying to survive. and that's a whole different
4:09 am
thing than expecting a ride and there heat could be far gone. but at this point it also means they are all the more dangerous for all the residents in that area for them to possibly do a home invasion or carjacking something desperate on their part. >> and, in fact we know the residents there are being asked to stay inside at this hour. so we obviously are watching the breaking news and will bring you all the developments as soon as we have them. thank you for all the information. we'll turn to the battle against isis that could be changing. up to 4050 additional troops could be joining the troops in iraq. the administration says they will train and assist iraqi forces. and new military personnel will act as recruiters reaching out to sunnis in anbar province.
4:10 am
michelle kosinski is at the white house with details. >> reporter: yes, and they want to get equipment to the iraqi forces quicker. but we are not talking tens of thousands of troops. about 450 troops set to go to between ramadi and fallujah. they are there to help the iraqis help themselves. the question exists though if these deep-rooted problems have been there in the iraqi army for some time why wasn't this assistance and more done well before ramadi fell? and sending significantly more troops now when you look at the total number that's there, doesn't that indicate there were significant underestimates of what was needed in the first place from the administration? we have gotten as much of an admission there are problems as we're going to get, yes, there have been setbacks yes, forces do need to respond more nimbley to isis and to act quickly with
4:11 am
a shortfall, yes, this is a problem they have been working on. there's criticism coming from some republicans as well as come democrats, not only that more needs to be done but also fears that the u.s. role is just going to get bigger and bigger and bigger. chris? >> the legitimate fear is what we are watching. thank you very much. american airlines had a flight veer off at charlotte's international airport. flight 786. when it went off the runway the pilot miscalculated. no one was on board the plane, that was hurt that is and neither was the plane that was cleared for departure 30 minutes later. just a weird thing there. ben carson raising eyebrows yet again after catching flak after appearing here on "new day." he made controversial comments about gay people. >> you think being gay is a choice? >> absolutely. >> why do you say that?
4:12 am
>> because a lot of people go into prison, go into prison straight and when they come out they are gay. did something happen while they were in there? >> now appearing on fox news yesterday he admitted that statement was bone-headed. but then he went on to say that gay rights and civil rights are not the same. >> quite frankly, i didn't remember any times when there were signs up that said everybody else here and gay people have to drink at this fountain. i was a little irritated. >> well, the gop presidential contender was out stumping in iowa yesterday and also said if elected president he would make the government more efficient by having workers spy on one another. that interview continues. >> it's interesting how many people agree with dr. ben carson about it. i know within the media it was a shock of the conscious moment but a lot of people agree with
4:13 am
him and a lot of people agree with him about the point saying it is not the same as civil rights. i think you have to be careful not to confuse what was done in the name of racism. no one is saying that lbgt is being attacked as badly as blacks were in this country. it's about whether or not they are being denied something in a way that defeats equal protection under the law. that's what the case is about. >> what i find interesting about ben carson is he's not your typical candidate, whether that's a good thing or bad thing. >> a lot of people like it. >> absolutely. we'll have more ahead on this search for two fugitives that broke out of the maximum security prison. you know that by now. the question is where are they? canada? mexico? vermont? maybe seven miles a way. we have people positioned everywhere and will bring you the latest. and hundreds more troops are heading to iraq to fight isis. will this make a difference?

you have to have the capability or the will. president obama is not providing the capability and doesn't have the will. >> that sounds like senator lindsey graham wants to see more boots on the ground fighting isis do you agree? let us know. this is a big move by the administration bringing in 450 extra troops to iraq as early as this summer. they are not supposed to be fighting but training. is that a reasonable assessment of what happens when you're on the ground in a war zone in we'll discuss this with representative seth molten a democrat from massachusetts on the armed services committee and a decorated iraq war veteran. first of all, congressman, as always thank you for your service. and now we'll take on the news of the numbers. do you believe even at 450 being put on the ground as trainers, is this a big shift? is this a new plan? is that the right way to describe it? >> that's not the way i see it. and i spoke yesterday with the white house and met with the iraqi ambassador, but this is a place where i disrespectfully
4:19 am
agree with the president. i think we need a serious long-term political strategy for iraq before we put more young americans into harm's way. make no mistake, isis is a national threat to the security of the united states. and the only way to defeat isis is to eliminate that political vacuum in iraq into which they have grown. but that's the point, it is fundamentally a problem. the iraqi government didn't get defeated by isis because they were poorly trained. isis came in and the iraqi army put their weapons down and went home because they had lost big in their government. and we are not going to fix iraqi politics by training iraqi troops. >> here's what is working well against your team right now for the republicans. you have no plan lindsey graham the senator, takes it a step further and it seems to me that what he means by no plan is you don't have enough people fighting on the ground. do you believe that the president has no plan? and do you believe the answer is for men and women like you to get back on the ground fighting isis? >> i don't believe the problem is that we don't have enough
4:20 am
troops. i believe we need a serious political plan to fix iraq. and, you know this really shouldn't come as a surprise because at the end of the surge ambassador crocker and general petraeus said we made tremendous military progress so much so that we can withdraw troops, but we need to make more political progress. when iraqi politics started to fall apart is when we pulled those advisors out of the prime minister's office. that's when iraqi politics went off the rails. and their own army now doesn't trust them and we are not going to fix that just by training more troops. >> i know that it may be politically incorrect, but why isn't there more discussion down where you are about going around the central government there? if they seem content to disenfranchise the sunnis, you know the problems are going to continue. why not do what they are asking and go right to the sunnis and give them what they want. go to the kurds to give them what they want. why not? just deal with the obvious
4:21 am
problem that way. >> well, i think the point is that we need a serious political strategy. and we need to be involved politically. look this is not a choice between having a purist iraqi democracy that's independent or having an iraqi democracy where america is working the public strings behind the scenes. it is really a choice between america working the public strings or iran working the public strings. that's what's going on right now and that is not in the national security interests of our country. >> are you worried about the march -- we are talking mission creed, are you worried about presidential creed as we go down the road to the election men and women start offering up more and more boots on the ground as a way of showing they are stronger on this attack against isis? >> i think that is a risk. and it is also important to say that having american military trainers on the ground i mean that is really a combat role. i had that mission as a platoon commander in the marines about ten years ago. and when the iraqi unit that we were partnering with came under fire started to get overrun, we
4:22 am
went to their assistance and that started the battle of naja some of the most brutal fighting of the war until that time. so an advisory mission can very quickly become a ground combat mission. let's not forget the vietnam war started as a military advisory mission. >> right. now, two quick points and i'll let you know because i know you have important things to do one, that's a big point you just made. people keep saying advisors will be fine, that's not the reality in a war zone. vit vietnam, is that a dangerous analogy at this point? do you see this becoming another vietnam? >> i don't see it becoming another vietnam right now, but it's important to know that a mission starting as an advisory mission can become a mission combat mission and mission creed with make it an awful lot worse. so the only really long-term solution here is to have a serious political strategy not just to think that we're going to fix iraqi politics by training their troops.
4:23 am
>> congressman moulten, thank you for your perspective on this much needed. the search for two fugitives is underway. police are surrounding an area very close to the prison they broke out of friday night. we'll have the latest on the manhunt for you, next. i'm caridee. i've had moderate to severe plaque psoriasis most of my life. but that hasn't stopped me from modeling. my doctor told me about stelara® it helps keep my skin clearer. with only 4 doses a year after 2 starter doses... ...stelara® helps me be in season. stelara® may lower your ability to fight infections and increase your risk of infections. some serious infections require hospitalization. before starting stelara® your doctor should test for tuberculosis. stelara® may increase your risk of cancer. always tell your doctor if you have any sign of infection have had cancer, or if you develop any new skin growths. do not take stelara® if you are allergic to stelara® or any of its ingredients. alert your doctor of new or worsening problems including headaches, seizures, confusion and vision problems. these may be signs of a rare potentially fatal brain condition. serious allergic reactions can occur. tell your doctor if you or anyone in your house needs or has recently received a vaccine.
4:24 am
in a medical study most stelara® patients saw at least 75% clearer skin and the majority were rated as cleared or minimal at 12 weeks. stelara® helps keep my skin clearer. ask your doctor about stelara®. the real question that needs to be asked is "what is it that we can do that is impactful?" what the cloud enables is computing to empower cancer researchers. it used to take two weeks to sequence and analyze a genome; with the microsoft cloud we can analyze 100 per day. whatever i can do to help compute a cure for cancer, that's what i'd like to do.

4:27 am
we are following a developing story. police have surrounding the search area looking for two escaped prisoners in upstate new york. this comes from a late-night tip. let's bring back cnn's jason carroll near the new search area. jason, what are you seeing? >> reporter: the search area is in west plattsburg. this section of route 374 is closed about a seven-mile section to the east of where the prison is located. it has been closed since last night when someone spotted something suspicious in the area. at that point, again, last night they asked residents who live in the area to stay inside. to look their doors. they had exterior lights to leave them on last night.
4:28 am
the school district is closed as a precaution while the search is underway. basically what we're having out here allyson, is every time something suspicious happens, every single time there's some sort of a lead that might take investigators someplace, you have to have this type of response. we saw tuesday in willsboro and are seeing it out here today. in terms of how long route 374 will be closed we are hearing until further notice. >> jason carroll reporting there in new york. joining us is former senior fbi profiler and special agent dr. mary ellen o'toole. it's been going on six days since the escapees got out and yet no signs of them seemingly. what is going through your mind as an investigator who is searching this area where we just saw jason carroll right now? >> well, my concern would be at the moment or at the point where
4:29 am
he's confronted. either by law enforcement or by someone from the general public. when i say he i'm referring to really richard matt. he's the one that just has such an extreme violent tendency. his -- he would engage in violent behavior not even as a reaction to being confronted but he would engage in it because that's what he likes, that's what he's comfortable with. and the response would very likely be immediate. and my concern as an investigator would also be that if he were to have taken hostages he would not bond with the hostages. so it's very difficult as a hostage negotiator to negotiate with someone who would use his hostages as objects. they are notoriously difficult to negotiate with. so those would be some of the concerns based on richard matt's personality. >> well, they both are hearty criminals and both convicted killers. one of them has already killed a
4:30 am
law enforcement officer, david sweat. you mentioned how dangerous richard matt is. but we haven't heard anything about carjackings, break-ins, robberies since the guys got loose. is that surprising? >> a little bit. it really is. because they have no resources, apparently that would be able to support their leaving the area. so the question is how are they moving around and what are they depending on? and my opinion is they did not plan this to occur this way, to go through all that trouble of drilling holes and going through that elaborate tunnel and then coming out on the street they didn't plan that okay now what do we do? we just wander around for a couple of days? so this is not part of their plan. this is something they're having to adapt to as they go. but i will tell you this again, i say particularly richard matt because if you're looking at the
4:31 am
distinction between the two, there's an extreme distinction between the two. he will be far more adaptive to having to land on his feet than a non-psychopathic offender. >> it sure sounds like he's a cunning character. we know he was a good artist in prison and drew pictures of oprah reportedly and maybe charmed the prison employees. we have heard there may have been a relationship between matt and the woman who was a super visor in the tailoring department. i want to turn to her, we don't know her connection to these two guys or whether she actually did help them with their escape plot. but when you look at somebody you know who is an employee becoming an accomplice possibly what turns somebody who is so unassuming, a mother a wife somebody who you would not anticipate being in a relationship with a criminal? why?
4:32 am
what is the attraction? >> well, first of all, it would be important to point out that he would have targeted her. when i say he most likely richard matt he would have targeted her first. it would not have been vice versa. he's a predator and he would have looked at her as he does with other humans to see her vulnerabilities, to see where he could use his very keen manipulative skills and really zero in on her. the process would have taken a period of time. it would not have happened overnight. and he would have charmed her and he would have made her feel very special. and he would have said things to her, like you know what if you were in my life all those years ago, i never would have ended up here like this. i have never met a woman like this. and that process would have also been involved in her engaging in behavior she typically wouldn't engage in. like bringing things into the prison breaking prison law here or there, and maybe a sexual
4:33 am
relationship. so by the time the grooming process has occurred she's very compromised and it is him and her and she sees him as somebody who changed. maybe he found religion and has changed as a part of this process. it's a sinister process and he orchestrated it. >> she has not been arrested at this point. why not if investigators believe she's involved? >> at this point they are still interviewing her about information that would be helpful to identifying where the people are. at the point where she's arrested then she's represented by council and it is more difficult to sit down to talk to her because she has to think about her own criminal liability in all of this. so they need her cooperation. that's very important right now. >> all right. mary ellen o'toole, thank you very much. >> you're wellcomewelcome. thank you for that

welcome back. it is time for "inside politics" on "new day" with our friend jong king john king how are you, john? >> i'm good. any day is a good day with you. >> i like that very much. >> a lot to talk about including the former secretary of state may not like much. we'll get right to it this morning. i want to start with the president's plan 450 or so new advisors not a combat role but let's help the iraqis in the fight against isis especially around ramadi. a lot of democrats don't like the president's party saying wait a minute. including charlie rangel who
4:39 am
raised the b-v-word. >> this is exactly how vietnam started. if you don't think you're putting them in harm's way, you're not living in the real world. >> how would you feel if you were hillary clinton and the iraq war is what undid you, or did you in in 2008. and now as you start to gear up in this campaign one of the big debates in this presidential campaign is going to be do you agree or disagree with the president sending more troops? what if things don't go well? should we send in more? >> right. no matter how we look at this situation for hillary clinton but the republican candidates as well there's a baseline weariness about u.s. involvement, not to mention the retracted situation in iraq. and i think the republican candidates especially are finding themselves cornered in a situation where they want to demonstrate the skepticism a level of skepticism about the president's strategy there, but they also understand the foreign policy and national security will be the dominant issue heading into the 2016 election. and they want to be able to say,
4:40 am
this is an administration that's saying this is a strategy that is aimed at isis. so do you show that support or sort of reign that in and keep it to yourself until you know what's going to happen? >> it's a matter of policy feeling out the titanic with a thimble. as a matter of politics iowa is an anti-war state for democrats. >> hillary clinton hasn't said anything we don't know her position on this. you can assume bernie sanders is oh no no no no. lincoln chaffey who is independent turned democrat who says no no no. what does she say? >> it's going to be awfully hard because if she says no no no how does that square up with what her position was in 2003 and 2004. and in she says yes, yes, yes, then like i said she's going to have cousins coming after her in
4:41 am
iowa. that's a very anti-war -- a lot of vietnam-era hippies are now voting in the iowa caucus. >> i think the has memory of the anti-war sentiment back from 2008. let's stick in iowa. governor chris christie of new jersey is heading to iowa. he spent a lot of time in new hampshire lately and a lot of people say to write him off, but he hasn't been to iowa in months. and the question is wide open out there, scott walker has it slightly this is his first time out there to give an education speech. he said he wanted new jersey to pull out of a common core supporter at one time now he's going to pull out. chris christie is down at the bottom of the pack. i hate to say this with you, governor but down there with donald trump in the 4% range at the bottom of the pack but thinks the power of persuasion will help him. chris christie to make a play in iowa? >> at this point it is very difficult to see how chris christie can revive the candidacy. the poll numbers really speak for themselves both nationally and in iowa.
4:42 am
he's pullolling at 4%. if you are polling at or near donald trump, that's not a good sign. one thing to watch out for with christie is how the donors talk about him. is there going to be a change in tone among the donors? so far we have not heard much to show confidence he can make this happen and save his candidacy. >> and yet, jeb bush hasn't -- while the established leaders, if you're chris christie you're thinking maybe. >> i was about him really playing another state, that would be new hampshire. the most significant number is that 58% of iowa republicans disapprove of him. and that number is down by ten points since november. so he's going the wrong way in a big field. he doesn't have a chance in iowa. >> not to say 45% of iowans said they would never vote for chris christie. >> a whole bunch of the republican candidates have been
4:43 am
going on the mitt romney primary. he's having an annual retreat out in utah and you have governor walker senator rubio, governor christie governor kasich senator graham going out there. rand paul and jeb bush invited but they don't look to be going. i think those candidates are remembering a lot of romney's friends that can help to raise money. so they will touch on that one. but i do want to spend time on this feud between fox news and the union leader of new hampshire. fox news is having a debate the first presidential debate they say they will have their number of candidates and some people won't make the cut. and chris wallace said iowa can win over new hampshire but so can we. the leader is not happy. he says what fox is attempting to do and is bragging about doing is a real threat to the first-in-the-nation primary. fox news will winnow the field of candidates before new hampshire gets to do so. this idea of having a debate the
