4:04 pm
he told me there is a one-traffic light town essentially, and nobody is being allowed in or out, without going through a check point or car search that one of his friends tried to come in town and police checked the license to make sure they live there. a cemetery caretaker, where the grid searches are taking place, he told me that he is scared, he is sitting there with his rifle watching this unfold hoping that it ends soon. of course, this is an unconfirmed sighting, but there are several things to take note of here. last week police in a neighboring county received tips of unconfirmed sightings there were two men matching the description of the escapees walking along railroad tracks east of there, and state police that were leading this investigation did not receive that tip until tuesday and it
4:05 pm
was not until yesterday they were able to find surveillance video from a business. this was just hours after the search here near the prison essentially went cold, and they got this tip, and they went and looked at the video and could not confirm it and it was not high quality enough and sent it to the state police crime lab for further analysis and enhancement and hours later, this afternoon, residents telling me around 4:00, police converged on friendship with another similar sighting, although still unconfirmed, where they are now concentrated hoping this may end the two-week long search. poppy? >> stay with us as we bring in deborah feyerick who joins me on the phone. i want to caution here, because i think people can get very excited when they hear this news, but this could very easily not be them. >> yeah, you are sraabsolutely right, poppy. there have been multiple times
4:06 pm
in the last two weeks since they escaped, there have been alleged sightings and people want these guys to be caught but unfortunately it has turned out the tips are false sightings or just incorrect, so authorities right now, they are investigating that area along the railroad tracks in friendship, new york, and a law enforcement source told us earlier it appears to be a credible sighting. investigators did find the tracks near friendship, new york, and you have heavily armed state and local police officers along the federal agents and u.s. marshals walking along the railroad tracks saturating the area as heavily as they possibly can, and we have been cautioning for the last couple weeks, these guys may be laying low, and richard matts a clever man and
4:07 pm
he escaped from prison and tried to escape from the mexican prison as well and he knows how to avoid capture now because he learned from his mistakes, and so while these sightings are coming in and they are being called credible and possible, and all of those things, you have to be very, very careful because right now as long as they lay low and they don't make a mistake, they will remain hidden. once they surface, once they make themselves vulnerable, mistakes may come more easily, and richard matts is going to avoid that at all costs, poppy. >> it's your law enforcement source that broke the news that they had this credible sighting. if call it a credible sighting, they probably met in person with who saw them.
4:08 pm
what would make them classify this as credible? >> well, because i guess it seemed credible for lack of a better word. it seemed they had information and whatever the person saw, the descriptions matched the two men that are at large right now, and so they have got to chase it down. a couple weeks ago, two weeks ago, there was a report from a cab driver that said he dropped two men sitting their description at a train station in philadelphia. again, they are doing everything they possibly can, and when we look at the investigation right now, and you see these searches going on, and these are so labor-intensive, and you have men and women doing these searches and you have to consider that investigators are
4:09 pm
also investigating prison records and seeing what visitors came and what calls were made in and out of the prison. they are trying to determine if richard matts or david sweet, and they are going to the library, the prison library and looking at books that may have checked out, so this is very intensive, and every u.s. marshal you speak to will say this is a marathon, and this is not a sprint, you have to do the most thorough investigation possible, and the men that are out there they want to find these guys really badly and they are going to go into hot pursuit of tips that appear to be at the top of the level. >> deborah feyerick, fantastic reporting, and thank you. sarah, thank you as well. we will take a quick break and on the other side i will talk about this with tom fuentes, and john cuff, former head of the

matthew hoarice. what is the hardest part about it, getting the manpower there quickly enough? >> yeah, to get the parameter established before dark, and get the dogs and the helicopters and search teams and special operations teams and get the enthusiasm back up. these guys were in horrible weather and now they are going to start all over again, give up another weekend and being with their families, and as john cuff men tupbtione mentioned, maybe it was a good lead, and in some cases you don't know what happened. >> nightfall comes at 8:53 eastern time, and that is not but an hour and a half from now,

matthew, and what does that do to change the search? >> it's going to be limited to some extend, and as tom eluded to earlier, we have technology that we can use overnight, and if it does rain we will re-engage that in the morning to determine if they are in that area, and we will be doing planning, and what happens at dawn when the sun comes back up. >> what is that technology they are using at nightfall? >> infrared techniques with planes and helicopters, and you best believe now that we are on the ground there, the planners and everybody involved will be planning what happens at daybreak and how we approach this thing on sunday morning. >> when you talk about somebody like eric rudolph, the centennial park bomber able to leave out in the wilderness for five years, and it's different for these two escapees, but would you expect them to hunker down if they are in this area,

the second male was described as wearing a medium colored shirt without pants and the subject destination may be pa, and that was from scanner traffic. emergency response teams heard that a little more than an hour ago. i want to give you context. scanner traffic not always reliable. a lot of calls come in and flood emergency response when something like this is happening in a town like this where people know the police are converged on an area and are searching heavily and start to call in, and everything they see that might seem out of the ordinary, and we know there has been an active search since the late afternoon, very rural area, and very intense search near a railway and a creek and a highway that runs through the town, and we know from witnesses, residents there on the ground that the town is essentially in lockdown and nobody getting in or out without
