2:00 pm
me on twitter assist@jaketapper. that's it for "the lead." i turn you over to one wolf blitzer, in a place i like to call -- i don't know about you, but i like to call "the situation room"\s. happening now, armed and dangerous. but there's also concern right now that fugitives may have found shotguns or other weapons in the area many hunted. confederate rebelliology lies in state at south carolina's capitol as the confed real flag waves outside. isis bombs, a cnn exclusive, we'll get you behind the scenes in a town recently recame up further from isis where danger lurks behind every corner as
2:01 pm
they leave behind bombs and bobby trapsbook boobytraps. bobby jindal announcing his run for the white house. we'll bring it live. i'm wolf blitzer, you're in office office. "the situation room." new information is emerging about the help a aspirin employee allegedly gave to two convicted killers, as searchers develop that are strongest clues yet for the pair who broke out a prison in upstate new york. numerous personal items were found in a cabin in a very remote location. there's also concerns that. at the same time an ex-inmate is revealing extraordinary details about the relationship between one of the fugitives and prison wore are joyce mitchell accused of
2:02 pm
aiding the escape. the former inmaid saying the pair would often sneak off to a storage closet for sexual encounters. today's other big story. 'em as the confederate flag waves outside the capital ton, the state lawmaker is being honored there. the body of past orr clementa pinkney has been lying in state. he was one of nine church members murdered during bible stud,. our correspondents and analysts guests are all standing by with full coverage on these and other major stories. let's begin with alexandra field who's in owls head new york. the state police did not deny that these escaped killers could be armed. explain what's going on. >> well wolf this is certainly a possibility that police are preparing po it all along. obviously they were very cunning, very dangerous. it was defy logic to they think
2:03 pm
wouldn't make some attempt to arm themselves. a lot of homes are used for hunting camps, meaning there's the possibility of arms in those cabins. but they could firm that any weapons are missing. they might not have a system for inventorying which guns belong in the home and they wouldn't perhaps be able to notice if a gun was missing at this point, wolf. >> there's also questions, alexandra, about whether one of the men had an injury. >> reporter: we know a pair of boots was left behind in a cabin where investigators believe they were both staying. there are unconfirmed reports that there were a pair of bloody
2:04 pm
socks left behind. state police have still not publicly confirmed whether or not there were blood, socks confirmed, but police are saying it could indicate something small, perhaps a blister, or on more serious injury. tier looking for signs if they're impeded. if they're barefoot or one of them is injured, these -- could slow their movement down's police continue to close in on them. >> how has the search area shifted, since authorities believe the men haven't been seen since saturday? >> they're moving through areas and responding to any -- anyone who is suspicious they may have seen someone suspicious. at the same time wolf you point out the last credible lead came on saturday. it's been four days since that.
2:05 pm
so they have to widen the search. we know that they widened the search up to malone today. it's a place where they wanted to put police show the community there is a police presence there and they really are taking a careful look at every corner of this region. >> alexandra field, thanks for that report. mean why explosive any claims about a sexual relationship between the alleged accomplice and one of the escaped inmates. >> let's go to brian tot, he's got new information. >> wolf this man tonight, gene palmer is now the focus of a lot of key questions. he is the person who delivered a package of frozen hamburger meat with tools inside to inmate richard matt. palmer's lawyer says that palmer didn't know the tools were
2:06 pm
inside. still he's being scrutinized tonight. >> he's a 28-year veterans correction officer who's career is on the line. his lawyer says palmer regrets not running the meat through the metal detect orr. palmer delivered it to inmate richard matt. >> we're learn now there were tools hidden inside that package. mr. palmer did not know what was inside the package. he had no knowledge beforehand there were any kind of tools inside. the only mistake he made was trusting joyce mitchell. >> or make not the only mistake. palmer knew the two killers well one received a painting made by richard matt. >> it places you in a
2:07 pm
compromising position. once you have set up that situation, it could be manipulated further, where you are now in their debt. >> gaston also says if palmer used matt and david sweat as sources for information, which kept the facility safe as he claims he shouldn't have done that either unless it was sanctioned by authorities at clinton. was it? the new york state corrections department would not comment. gene palmer is on paid leave. he's not been arrested or charged. a former inmate at clint beenen who says he knew palmer does not think he would help people escape. >> he was not like the other officers. he would mingle more. >> that inmaid eric jensen worked at the clinton tailor shop. jensen says about four times a week mitchell and swelled would disappear into a closet at the taper shop. >> i believe they were getting it on. i believe they were getting it
2:08 pm
on in that back room. mitchell's husband lyle says she swore she never had sex with either inmaid, but jenkins says tlurp suggestions otherwise. >> especially like when the superstar football player he asked the girl out on a date or for the prom or something like that. >> i spoke a short time ago with joyce mitchell's attorney steve johnston. he says he's not been able to speak to her yesterday about the specific allegations, but he says mitching has toll police investigators and told him he never had sex with david sweat and the corrections officer so far has found no evidence of that. is the new york department of corrections would not comment on the jensen's allegations, wolf. >> did this former inmate at this prison did he ever ask david sweat about a relationship with joyce mitchell?
2:09 pm
>> jensen says he and other inmates asked sweat if anything was going on. jensen says sweat would often laugh after that but never confirmed or denied it. >> brian, thank you. the search is focused on 75 square miles of very rugged country and rough terrain. joining us is kevin mull ver hill. thank you very much for joining us. first, what's the late zest information you can share about the i don't think again manhunt? >> not a lot of new leads today, mr. blitzer. the manhunt continues. we've had a number of potential sights sightings. think obviously we aren't 9 people we are looking for. >> i don't know if you saw those
2:10 pm
police vehicles rushing behind you. is that common or unusual? >> well i would say they're probably responding to something. >> potentially maybe involved in this manhunt. as you know you know this area well. there is nor reports that a shotgun was missing. do you believe these two kitters are armed right now with guns? >> i think they're smart people. obviously they broke out of a maximum security prison. if they had the capability to arm themselves obviously they would, no doubt. >> you have no doubt they would use those weapons, right? >> yes, correct. >> we heard mare charles gaston say earlier today he believes the last sighting of these men was around 10:30 a.m. saturday. how can you be sure they haven't traveled way beyond your county
2:11 pm
and other areas in the past four days? >> i was fortunate enough to get up in a helicopters today. i can tell you that's very thick e. very rough terrain i can't imagine their movements are very vast and they're able to move very quickly at all. >> you believe they're walking, they don't have a vehicle. is that right? >> correct. they're on foot. >> due think they infrared hoo et-seeking devices from helicopters or air krafl are useful? >> well any technology we have including infrared is a tool. they kind of point us in the right direction. i'll be honest since this detail has started, we haven't

glee armed with new klees, wore the fuj tips may be armed with guns. we're back with senator culver. sheriff, i'm told -- that local this morning believe they're not using air krafl or the heat-seeking equipment as part of the search. is that right? >> i'm not sure. appear that is being controlled out main command center. i'm at the operating post. >> the other question quoting major charles, he said today that items were found, left behind in that cabin where the
2:18 pm
dna link was found. what were the items they may have found that could be connected to the killers? >> i'm not sure wolf. that's a state police investigation, and they followed up on that. sglool do you know who owned that cabin? there are reports it was owned by someone who actually world at the clinton correctional facility. i was wondering if that's true. if it is true it sounds suspicious. >> i can't confirm that. i'm sure the state police are following up on all those leads. how klee do you believe that your colleagues are close to finding the two killer. >> afc doing the fly-over i think it's possibility to be wandering through the thicket.
2:19 pm
that they had at least a bit to eat -- they haven't had anything to eat since saturday. they're hungry tired, fatigued, and they're wandering around in a heavy thicket. we're going to come across them. >> and you believe -- you're working on the assumption these two are partners they haven't separated in. >> we have nods to is indicate otherwise. >> sheriff, we'll check back with you tomorrow. good luck. >> okay standpoint thanks wolf. >> let's bring in our if analyst tom fuentes, matt forrazz, and retired chief deputy u.s. marshal matthew fogg. thanks for joining us. what's your reago to what we just heard? i'm concerned with the fact
2:20 pm
they're saying they're together. i've always believed that they would separate. >> why do you believe that? >> that's normally what they do. we know that traveling together they're more likely to be identified if these separate. again, i believe somebody hemmed this from the outside. i believe they had food and water, and i believed that somehow they probed have moved out area. >> tom, same thing? >> i agree. it's agreed that four days later they have 1,000 officers there, but what do they have saturday night into sunday morning, how far could they have gotten? >> matthew horace many more details are emerging about joyce mitching's relationship.
2:21 pm
he was in the honor block, if you will. what do you make about that? what if anything will help in the search for these two guys? >> well number one, i don't think anything we hear we should be surprised at. we've heard things day in and day out related to the security of the prison. this was a security breach, nothing more, nothing less. the fact they were in this honor belong if you will and one of the them at least, according to this other inmaid used to go a few times into some back room with this woman. it sounds like some sort of fraternity frat house. >> actually it does.
2:22 pm
what happens, a lot of times these situations -- everybody wants this thing to run smoothly. the bottom line is sometimes guards will do exactly this. i'm sure there are a lot of protocols, thinking that nothing -- if i turn my head this time or that time it's going to be better for me as a guard. that's why a lot of times contrabad is introduced -- how do they get drugs? because a lot of guards this is a different society, and they have to live there with these people. a lot of times people will do just that. >> it's showinging to me tom. i don't know if this kind of detail is hocking to you, but it's pretty shocking to me. >> not shocked, but one thing i would like to know more about is has there been serious budget cuts tlurg the past few years? has work been put on these
2:23 pm
correctional officers that made thinks irate or disgruntled. oftentimes we'll see a disgruntled employees want to be back at the city the police department back at somebody and then do something that would embarrass the management the people running that prison. >> is it possible matthew, these two guys are going to be out there a long time? >> i think it depends on how we evaluate a long time. eric fram was over two weeks. if we let the information guide how we record and understand the only way that information will come out is program because investigators have interviewed all the owners of the cabins, and there are against mying. then they may be responsibility fo theft. that's a game changer for us.
2:24 pm
>> it's day 19 in this search. guys stand by. we'll have much more in the story. there are new developments. also south carolina honoring the victim of the massacre while continuing to fly the confederate flag. one lawmakers wants that flag to stay up. later, an exclusive look at linger -- bombs and booby traps, left behind by isis. if you have moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis like me... and you're talking to a rheumatologist about a biologic this is humira. this is humira helping to relieve my pain and protect my joints from further damage. this is humira helping me reach for more. doctors have been prescribing humira for more than 10 years. humira works for many adults. it targets and helps to block a specific source of inflammation that contrubutes to ra symptoms. humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers including lymphoma have happened, as have blood

public viewing of the coffin of the state senator and reverend pinkney just ended at south carolina state capitol. the procession carrying the coffin passed the confederate flag. pinkney and eight others were shot and killed a week ago. state lawmakers agreed yesterday to schedule a debate on removing the flag from the grounds of the south carolina capitol. drew griffin spoke with one of the lawmakers who voted no and now is apologizing for some of his remarks which were very controversial. drew tell us what he told you. >> reporter: i can tell you he deeply regrets what le told me. we're stalking about representative chummily. when i asked him about it
2:30 pm
yesterday, he had an exchange where he seemed to be putting some blame on the victims in this case. take a listen to this, wolf. these people waited their turn to be shot. that's sad. if somebody in there with the means forself defense could have stopped this and we would have had less criminals. >> reporter: are you turning this into a gun debate? >> you said guns. why didn't somebody just do something? i mean you've got one skinny person shooting a gun. you know? we need to do what we can. >> i asked if point-blank he wanted to change his words, he didn't but today a change of heart. he sent out an e-mail deeply regretic his works. he said the responsibility for the despicable murders rests solely on the murderer. if any of my remarks suggest
2:31 pm
differently, i am deeply sorry. that's william chumley. >> what did he tell you about his stance on the confederate battle flag. he's opposed to opening up debate on removing it and opposed on taking it down. he said 15 years ago when the state moved that flag from the capitol dome down to where it currently stands on the capitol ground the compromise ended the controversy in his mind. he does not want it to come down. >> drew thank very much. let's get more. joining us here in "the situation room", former colleague of the reverend pinkney, the south carolina state senator marlon kimpsonemp kimpson. >> just hearing this state representative's chumley's words, these people sat in there and waited their turn to be shot. it's just awful that he's now apologyizeing
2:32 pm
apologizing. what was your reaction when you heard that? >> i think mr. chumley brought disservice and dishonor to the south carolina general assembly. first of all it's a reckless disregard for the families who are in a period of grieving. but also equally important is the fact that he has no evidence to support his statements. he doesn't know what exactly happened in that church. >> we had a very constructive debate yesterday. for our progress to be marred by some legislator who is so inconsiderate really disappoints me. >> i know it is shocking to hear those words, especially during this time of mourning. >> the governor haley is
2:33 pm
declining at least for now declining to remove the flag saying she doesn't have the authority. others say she does have it to remove it for cleaning or whatever. should that flag which is still flying there in front of the state capitol be removed at least during the days of mourning? >> if i were governor i would have used that provision to remove -- that you just cited, to remove the flag. i think that could have sent a powerful message to the rest of the country that she is willing to exert all of her energy examining the statutes and, you know the statute provided that support now, having said that i'm not here to speak on her behalf. i do appreciate her showing some leadership earlier this week because that leadership allowed us to get a vote in the house
2:34 pm
and the senate and so i think that she has moved some of our legislators towards the sine dei legislation. the tone started off with snort paul senator paul thurmond, there were passionate remarks made by both republicans and democrats. i automatic carbly optimist ilkka the lectors have the desire and the will to remove the confederate flat from the front of the statehouse. wolf if we look at what is
2:35 pm
happening across this country, this movement is now spreading to mississippi. i understand the governor of alabama used his statutory authority power to remove the flag and also i'm told that the governor of virginia will no longer issue license plates bearing the symbol. so south carolina is a proud state. we have a number of newly elect ed federal who understand the significant impact across the world. people are willing to do the people's business and bring this state united. there's been too much division but let me be clear. after we remove the flag we still have to have a serious dialogue about race relations in the state, including an economic empowerment agenda because many
2:36 pm
citizens feel disenfranchised from economic opportunities and procurement. that is the solution for the future. we have to come away after honoring these victims of this horrific tragedy, and major sure we do more than just remove symbols. we need a substantive agenta so that all citizens can participate in economic empowerment and have the retirement security be able to send their kids to college, to be able to get a good education. that's what we're going to focus on in the aftermath of this tragedy. senator, thanks for joining us. we'll check back with you tomorrow. senator marlon kimpson joining us from south carolina. coming up the latest on the manhundred dollars. police now say the escapees may have guns.

2:43 pm
the local wpg commander said something did not feel right. they put a warning on the gate and the resident told them that isis had booby-trapped it. do you see the jews thing? a thing coming out of it? okay. don't touch the door. isis no longer controls it but there are the town is still cloaked in fear. a certain unease emanates from the adults. anger evident in their voices. mahmud darwi says isis forced him to purchase black clothe fog his little girls. the throe say they were sometimes scared. now they enjoy being outside without head scarves, and they want to go back to school. we went to a month and then they closed it the girls tell us

they made it a base for the state, mean isis. that was two years ago. now they say they are happy. in an environment like this one can only hope it stays that way. arwa damon cnn, syria. what a development over there. here in the united states the 2016 presidential race is about to become a bit more crowded. we're watching as the louisiana governor bobby jindal becomes the 13th republican to entered the race. also ahead, the latest clues and the surprises in the hunt for a pair of dangerous escaped killers. are the escapees right now carrying guns? i'm caridee. i've had moderate to severe plaque psoriasis most of my life. but that hasn't stopped me from modeling. my doctor told me about stelara® it helps keep my skin clearer. with only 4 doses a year after 2 starter doses... ...stelara® helps me be in season. stelara® may lower your ability to fight infections and increase your risk of infections. some serious infections require hospitalization.

all right. take a look at this. this is just coming into "the situation room", an awful situation, a heckler interrupting the president of the united states just a little while ago during an lbgt pride month event in the east room drawing a shark rebuke from the president. let me play the video. >> i've told you the civil rights of lbgt americans -- yeah hold on a second. okay, you know what? no no. no, no, no. hey! listen you're in my house. don't start -- [ cheers and applause ] >> c'mon, it's not -- you know what? it's not respectful when you get

invited to somebody's -- >> pretty ugly situation although the president handled it well. we have a key race alert happening right now. we want to go to louisiana, the republican governor bobby engine dad, he's getting ready to announce he's running for president of the united states. this is the 13th republican and a few more expected in the coming days as we await -- here he is on the stage. you know what? >> my name is bobby jindal. i am governor of the great state of louisiana and running for president of the greatest country in the world, the united states of america.
2:51 pm
44 years ago, a young couple who had never before been on an airplane they left their home on the other side of the world to come to a place called america. they had never seen it. there was no internet to search. but they had heard the legend. there was a place in this world where people were free. and the opportunities were real. they weren't really coming to a geographical place, they were coming to an idea. and that idea is america. to them america represented all that was good in the world. where you can get ahead if you worked hard and played by the rules. a place where what matters is the content of your character, not the color of your skin zip code you were born in or your family's last name. my dad grew up in a house without electricity without
2:52 pm
running water. the only person in the family past the fifth grade. he and mom they came to louisiana because they believed in america. and when they got here they found that the legend was true. they found that the people of louisiana accepted them. and they found that america is indeed the land of the free and the home of the brave. 37 years later, my parents eldest son became governor of louisiana. it was the aftermath of katrina. our economy was locked in a downward spiral. our biggest city was reeling. for 25 straight years, more people had left this state than had moved into it. louisiana was in big trouble. so we had to make big changes. we had to believe in louisiana again and that is exactly what we did.
2:53 pm
we reformed our ethics laws we went from one of the worst states to one of the best states in the country. we privatized our outdated government-run hospital system we reformed education with nearly 100% charter schools in new orleans. now we have statewide school choice because every child deserves an equal opportunity for a great education. we made the dollars follow the child because we trust the parents not the bureaucrats to make the best decisions for their kids.
2:54 pm
we did what they said could not be done, we shrank our government. we cut our budget by 26%. we cut the number of government bureaucrats by more than 30,000. it wasn't easy. the big government crowd fought us every step of the way. they protested, they filibustered, they even took us to court but in the end we won. today we have more people moving into louisiana than out of it. our highest population in history. our kids are coming home. and now we have more people working than at any time in our state's history. with the highest incomes in our state's history. a job for your family. a paycheck in your mailbox.
2:55 pm
they're the ultimate proof that your state is doing things right. of course there is another side to the story. the big government crowd they hate what we have done. they say that we have cut the government more than anyone. the government budgets are always running low on fund with me and the governor's office. my response to the big government crowd is simply this -- yes. i am guilty as charged. and our state is better off for it today. it's time for the folks in washington to admit the truth. you can't grow the economy and the government at the same time. it is an either/or choice. now hillary clinton she wants to grow the government in
2:56 pm
washington. we want to grow the real economy out here in america. here's the key difference. democrats evaluate success in terms of the prosperity of government. we define success in terms of the prosperity of our people. my approach is different from most of the other people running for president. the united states of america was made great by people who get things done. not lots of talk or entertaining speeches. i want to be sure, there are a lot of great talkers running for president already. but none of them not one can match our record of actually shrinking the size of government. if great speeches helped our country, we would be on easy street right now.
2:57 pm
the guy in the white house today, he is a great talker. we have a bunch of great talkers running for president. we have had enough of talkers. it is time for a doer. i am not running for president to be somebody i'm running for president to do something. oh it is easy to talk about the mess obama has made of our country. every american knows about it. every republican candidate talks about it. that's not even half of what we should expect from our next president. we owe voters more than just a tirade about the problem. we owe them honesty about our solution. i will do the things you cannot
2:58 pm
do in washington. i will say the things you cannot say. i served two terms in congress. i can tell you how it works in washington. if you want to be with the cool consider if you want to be liked by the media, if you want to be invited to the right cocktail parties, you have to accept there are things in washington you just cannot do. they say, you cannot reduce the size of government or the number of bureaucrats. oh you might be able to cut the rate of increase here and there, but they say you cannot actually cut government spending. but we can and we will! they say the 18 trillion dollar national dealt can't really be addressed. it is just a part of doing
2:59 pm
business so it is better not to talk about it. but we can and we will! they know social security and medicare are going bankrupt. but they're afraid to do anything about it. so they deny the math they pretend everything is fine. but we can't reform and save these programs -- but we can reform and save these programs and we will. in washington they say term limits is a quaint idea that we are naive to believe in. they think we need a permanent class, a ruling class of elites. it is safer to not rock the boat. but we can rock the boat and we will rock the boat. >> all right we'll continue to monitor monitor, bobby jindal governor of louisiana, the 13th republican to formally publicly enter the race for the
3:00 pm
republican presidential nomination. the first indian-american to make this announcement. he is wrapping up his speech. we'll continue to monitor it. we have a lot of other news though we are following here in "the situation room." happening now into the woods, the manhunt for two killers zeroing in on a remote area around the cabin hideout. as we learn intimate new details about the relationship between one of the convicts and the prison worker accused of aiding their escape. >> terrorist apology, boston marathon bomber breaks his silence as he is sentenced to death tonight some survivors of the attack aren't buying his words of remorse. >> massacre scene, worshippers return to the charleston church where nine people were gunned down a week ago as their slain pastor is honored and controversy over the confederate flag rages. >> hostage ransoms, with kidnappers holding 30 americans overseas
