picture as we say good morning to you. it's tuesday, june 30th. alisyn is off today. we have new information about the escape plan for the two new york convicted killers. david sweat is hospitalized and talking. they planned to go to mexico. when the get away driver didn't show up they had to make a new plan. >> were prison employees and inmates engaging in criminal behavior? we are live at the hospital in albany where david sweat's condition is said to be improving. sarah? >> reporter: good morning, chris and michaela. for three weeks, authorities wondered was the prison seamstress really their escape plan? did they really plan to run off with her? now that david sweat has been captured and talking, she really was their plan "a." when she didn't show up they

sweat with escape burglary and any other crimes he may have committed while on the run. chris? >> no hurry to move him as long as he's giving information. thank you very much appreciate it. you have david sweat and richard matt no longer a danger on the outside. state authorities and fbi need to look inside the correctional facility. allegations of drug trafficking and corruption surfaced during the prison break investigation. jean casarez is live with that part of the story. jean where does it take us? >> good morning, chris. cnn confirmed the fbi launched an investigation to see if there is an issue with drug trafficking inside the prison that i'm standing outside of right now. it would be amongst the inmates, but more than that to see if it would involve the prison employees. we know that the new york state general launched an

investigation for several weeks now. they have been going through files, but more than that they have been talking with employees. some of the employees told officials there is heroin use amongst the inmates. the question is are the employees involved in that? more than that were matt and sweat involved in that? they had access to areas in the prison other inmates may not have. we are learning their dna was found deep inside tunnels, inside the prison down below and because of any issues why did they get access to those areas? now, they are also talking with inmates as to whether they have been spoken to about the outside. if employees talked about what it's like out here what routes are outside the prison. now, while the prison is doing their investigation the courts are taking their toll. gene palmer appeared he made his first appearance in this

county court. it was his court appearance where they waived proceedings in this lower court. they will now go to the higher court and the grand jury according to the district attorney will be convened in most likely a month. they will determine whether there is an indictment of gene palmer. he is one of two employees charged at this point. he's got three felonies and one misdemeanor and charged with serious allegations. nothing to do with the actual escape but involving taking things in to matt and sweat. after they went missing, burning and burying their paintings. now, we have to wait for that grand jury and the other defendant, joyce mitchell. the question is will there be more charges if the drug trafficking has truth to it. michaela? >> we'll have to wait. jean, thank you so much for that. breaking overnight, president obama working to make

millions of americans eligible for overtime pay. he wants to more than double the threshold for salary workers to make that extra cash. this is a new poll conducted after several big wins for the white house. the president's approval is at the highest point in two years. senior white house correspondent jim acosta is live at the white house with details. good morning to you, jim. >> reporter: good morning, michaela. a lot of numbers to run through. the white house is setting rules to raise the pay of 5 million americans. this country, a hard day's work deserves a fair day's pay. that's at the heart of what it means to be middle class in america. here is what it means for you. under the old overtime rules, that extra pay of time and a half stopped at $23,660 a year. now the threshold is bumped up to people making up to $50,400 a

year. this comes, as you mentioned, as the president is receiving higher marks for the way he's handling his job. according to our cnn poll numbers, the president's approval numbers are on the rise. 50% approve, 47% disapprove. it's the highest numbers in two years. you can see the difference. he has not been over 50% over the course of the last several months. one reason why that is the president is getting better marks for how he's handling race relations. that is up five points. 55%. five poupts higher than last month. people are also feeling better about how the president is handling race relations overall, 20% say they are better under president obama up five points from earlier this year. another big swing for the president is his handling of the economy. we are talking overtime rules this morning. on the economy, people like what
3:08 am
he's doing right now. up six points over the last month. that is basically the reason why his approval numbers are above that magic number of 50%. that is a number the white house is going to likely see this morning. they are going to wake up to better poll numbers. the last time we talked about the cnn/orc numbers when they were not heading in the right direction. the president wants to raise the minimum wage. this is another way to get around raising the pay for millions of americans in the white house likes the sound of that as well. >> this will be a poll they don't dismiss out of hands and say is a distraction. >> reporter: no that's right. >> thank you. we appreciate it. new fallout for donald trump. nbc giving him a taste of his own medicine. wait for it you're fired. he is out of derogatory comments he made during his campaign launch speech.

they are dropping the miss usa/miss universe pageants. he's already firing bam. we are live in chicago with the latest. when donald trump comes at you, the word sue usually comes up soon enough. >> reporter: yes, it does. he is threatening to sue. good morning, chris. the reality show star and now presidential candidate planned to give up his hit show on nbc, "the apprentice". monday the network made it official they are keeping the show without him and using that famous line "you're fired." >> somebody has to come out and tell it like it is. >> reporter: trump stood by his comments about mexican immigrants. >> they are bringing drugs, crime and they are rapists. some are good people. they think it's like mother teresa coming across. this one says 80% of central

american women and girls are raped crossing into the united states. well i said drug dealers, i said killers and i said rapists. >> reporter: asked if he would apologize, trump said -- >> there's no apology. what i said is right, it is 100% right. >> reporter: nbc will no longer air the miss usa or universe pageants. univision is also dropping it. >> i will be suing. >> reporter: growing pressure to respond with 200,000 people signing a pe decision on change.org calling on them to dump trump. trump has been surging in the republican polls, up to second place in the first primary state of new hampshire. he touted the latest cnn/wmur poll. >> a poll came in and they have interesting categories.
3:11 am
who is the best in terrorism? that's an important subject. trump, right at the top. who is the best on handling international trade? not even close, trump is almost double anybody else. that's incredible. >> reporter: trump issued a statement slamming nbc for standing behind lying brian williams but not behind people that tell it like it is as unpleasant as that may be. there you have it. classic trump, he is defiant and tells himself as a truth teller. >> we'll talk more about this throughout the course of the morning. greece is on the verge of economic default this morning. officials denying a last minute request. an extension on a $1.7 billion payment due to the international monetary fund. what happens when greece defaults and what will be the impacts here in the united states? let's get to cnns business
3:12 am
correspondent richard quest live in athens. richard? >> reporter: good morning. 12 hours from now, 12 hours to the minute is when the default is likely to happen. that's when greece has to make a payment to the international monetary fund, the imf. last night, the economy minister in greece told me we don't have the money, making the payment is impossible. so michaela no question about it greece will default today. the issue, of course is will there be ripple effects around the financial system? everybody is trying to be prepared for what might happen. here is a thought. there's just a possibility, the rumor, the gossip we are hearing here in athens. people saying there may be some talks taking place. who knows if it's true. we will be finding out in the next hour. for the time being, greece defaults today, chris. >> it's absolutely rocking the markets all over the world here
3:13 am
in the u.s. richard, good to have you here. thank you. breaking overnight, 38 people reported dead after a military jet crashes. the c-130 transport plane went down after take off. the aircraft has 12 people on board. the other victims, on the ground. the cause of the crash is under investigation. the u.s. and international partners issuing a warning to iran saying the preliminary agreement must remain the basis for a final nuclear deal. today is the official deadline to reach the deal. both sides agree, it will not happen today. u.s. officials want an agreement by july 9th. otherwise, the period for congressional review doubles from 30 to 60 days. chris? >> thank you very much for giving me time to get over here. let's get back to the top story. the prison escape is over. now, there is a bigger story. what was going on at the clinton
3:14 am
correctional facility? right now, it doesn't look pretty. corruption trafficking and more. let's bring in someone who understands the investigations well and where they can lead. arthur roderick a former assistant director of the u.s. marshals service. very good to have you. it is key that david sweat is talking to them on one level. you have two levels here how did this happen and what else is going on? what is the strategy in getting sweat to keep talking and what are going to be the hurdles that investigators and interrogators have to deal with where he's involved? >> good morning, chris. i think sweat's notoriety right now is driving him forward. i mean he's basically a rock star in the prison system right now. his name and picture have been put out across the country and basically internationally. i think, it wasn't that difficult to get him to talk. very narcissistic.
3:15 am
he's a psycho path and he's going to want to tell a story. they are already talking movies and tv shows. i think it just bolsters his egoto have his story come out. of course you have to take some of it with a grain of salt. if they compare it with joyce mitchell's story, they will be able to come up with exactly what occurred in the prison. also we know enough information on the outside that we are probably able to break down what he said about what happened once they got out of the manhole cover. >> get corroboration there and notoriety is the only currency he's going to get. he's not going to profit for any movies of his escape as a felon. joyce mitchell was supposed to get them, they were supposed to go to mexico together. one, why kill the husband? was it because this was joyce mitchell's involvement? second what was the chance two
3:16 am
guys like this would keep joyce mitchell alive once they got to mexico? what is your take on those two? >> very good questions. obviously, i think mitchell had fallen in love with them and she had to get rid of the husband and that was probably the trade off for getting them to mexico. i don't think she would have made it to mexico or maybe across the border then they would have taken care of her. it is very odd. this isn't the old west anymore where once you hit the border, there's automatic freedom. both canadian border officials, law enforcement officials on each side of the border on mexico and canada were ready for it. the u.s. marshals had a warrant and notified them. there were notices in both countries to arrest those individuals, you know if they came across the border. so, this idea they were going to get some type of quick freedom is a false idea. >> i know investigators were
3:17 am
baffled sweat said yeah our plan was to kill the husband. they were like why would you do that? he said we had a deal. seemed like an unusual thing to do. he was thinking of keeping with the deal with somebody when he's the kind of guy he is. now we have the second layer, what's going on inside that prison. the allegations, if you take them at the worst, arthur of the heroin trade that was going on and being driven by the guards. as horrible as those sound, it's not the first time you have heard them is it? >> no. i don't want to say it's common but it does happen in corrections facilities. we don't want to indict all 1400 employees employees. there are plenty of good employees, professional employees, employee that is stay within the guidelines at the institution. it comes down to complacency. that's what happens. some of these guys get
3:18 am
complacent. they let a little thing slip by. the next thing you know they are letting larger issues slip into the facility and drug trafficking does occur in facilities and it is a way for the, especially individuals doing life without parole. what else do they have to look forward to? >> sometimes you hear of co-dependency co-dependency. it gets deeper and deeper. thank you. we look forward to depending on you as we get more information. >> absolutely. thanks chris. president obama's approval rating hitting a two-year high. what exactly is behind the rise and what impact will it have on the 2016 race? leave early go roam sleep in sleep out star gaze dream big

new york prison escapee, david sweat, is talking with investigators. we now know more about the plan and more insight on why the escape was poszsiblepossible. let's bring in a former fbi assistant director for the criminal investigative division. he led the search for eric robert rudolph. good to have you with us. one, how valuable is sweat in giving insight into how the escape was possible and what's going on in the prison? >> he's a very significant part of any investigation whether it's inspector general or the fbi. they are going to want to know who are the bad apples inside
3:43 am
the prison. first and foremost then what and how they did what they did. >> a quick question on the side note just intrigue into this weird tale. how likely is it in your mind that joyce mitchell who agreed to help them go to mexico according to david sweat, take it for what it's worth, that they were going to kill her husband and part of the deal and that they were actually going to keep her alive and go to mexico with her. do those things surprise you? >> they do. i don't think either one was likely. if she were there when they popped out of the manhole, i don't think they would take time to divert to her house to kill her husband. i don't know why they want to do that that wastes time. secondly they had no use for her whatsoever. they would have tossed her out and she would have been in a shallow grave within an hour. >> it's a horrible thought.
3:44 am
it's insight for them in terms of how to filter the investigators. if they tell them that's the legit plan that's the lens they have to examine everything. these types of allegations with the fbi and the inspector general looking into heroin trade, working through the employees, getting to convicts. not the first time you have heard of it but what does it instruct you into terms of the investigation? >> first, this is a form of public corruption. when official prison guards and people that work inside prisons in a position of trust are committing criminal violations not just rule breaking this is public corruption. it's the number one priority of the criminal division. this was a very high priority. what you see is systemic corruption. 22 arrests of prison guards in maryland maryland 14 arrests of prison

guards drug trafficking, you name it. >> if they are doing this is it more likely they would help these convicts or more likely they wouldn't have been on their guard the way they should have been allowing them to stage this escape? >> well i think it is more likely. i mean it's -- it's -- there are criminal activities conducted by guards, lax culture inside the prison is probably going hand in hand with that. >> and in terms of expanding the investigation, because as you are pointing out, drug trade in prison is wrong, but it happens. so, what is going to be the important aspect here in figuring out who helped these guys get out? do you think that circle is going to get bigger? >> i do think it is going to get bigger. i think the predication for the fbi investigation is a byproduct of looking at this whole escape plan and talking to prison guards and people inside and outside the prison talking to

3:52 am
nbc pulling the plug. they had to review their contracts with trump. after all, he has threatened lawsuits in the past. they wanted to review their deals, make sure they could pull the plug. >> let's talk about it the cry from the latino community has been resounding. you talk to people not just about the univision pulling out, but a lot of people are talking about it. a lot of celebrities are going to boycott, i don't want to be a part of this i'm pressuring nbc. do you think this is what put it over the edge? >> there was -- the issue simply was that people who could have spoken out have not spoken out. for example, you know why didn't jeb bush whose wife is mexican and whose children are mexican-american. why didn't they come out swinging. why didn't rubio and cruz come

out? let's align with the mexican-american community and go after this issue. why didn't hillary clinton be stronger on this? where does bernie sanders on this issue? across the board, the people who could have spoken didn't and it created a frustration from coast-to-coast that erupted on social media. >> there's no question there's a plus minus on it. you have to look at both sides. the result is a good thing. you have an outcry that speaks to an important issue. a lot of people don't want to take trump seriously. a lot of candidates don't want to give him that oxygen. you are making a good point as well. he markets himself and that's the right word as plain speak. you believe this decision by nbc is a good indication in the name of plain speak, we are not going to allow bigotry anymore. >> that's the point.

the latino community is fed up with being the scapegoat and accused of these kinds of crimes. the other part it may have been about mexican immigrants but the mexican-american community, as well as all latinos in the united states felt it. this defamed the entire 54 million latinos in the united states. that's the cause of the uproar. it was the boomerang effect of the comments. we are much closer in proximity to the border and our cultural roots. when you attack someone across the border and you are only two and a half hours from the border you feel that pain. >> brian, it's interesting, trump took nbc to task. we can pull it up. standing behind lying brian williams, but not people that tell it like it is as unpleasant as that may be.
3:55 am
he doubled it. >> he knew where to kick nbc. to your point about marketing, his brand is standing up to people never backing down. he's trying to make it look look it was his decision a good thing for him. the bottom line it's a loss for his business. nbc breaking up with him. the hispanic marketplace is growing quickly. networks like nbc want to appeal to it and need to appeal to it. that's why as we saw the complaints over the weekend. >> do you think he's out, trump? nbc has a contract. but the election what do you think it means in terms of how badly trump is hurt by this? >> i thought he would go back to "the apprentice" in the fall. i thought he would be on the campaign trail, then go back to "the apprentice" and his reality show. this break up implies he will never go back to the network. it suggests they have to find a new home for miss usa and miss

"apprentice" was a valuable brand to him. >> miss usa, there's been a tweet? >> they just weighed in this morning for the first time saying the pageant will go on. they are disheartened by what happened. it is supposed to happen in two weeks. right now, they don't have television network that is are going to air it. i have a feeling, we will hear of a solution for that. nbc knows, that's the ugly part. they don't want to be associated with trump or these women appear to be the casualties of the situation. >> we appreciate it obviously. there's a lot to discuss in this. we appreciate you joining us on "new day." you can get in on the conversation. tweet us. you can go to cnn instagram or go to our facebook page as well
