ot of new information coming out. cnn has obtained a photograph shortly after he was shot. we want to warn our viewers, it is extremely graphic. david sweat, alive, is still in the hospital in albany new york. he continues to talk to authorities. captured convicted killer david sweat, claims he was the master mind behind the prison break 26 days ago. [ sirens ] >> reporter: according to district attorney andrew wiley, the former fugitive says he and inmate matt escaped the night before on their dry run, but decided the first manhole was not secluded enough. joyce mitchell was supposed to pick them up and drive to west virginia before heading to mexico. >> heard helicopters. >> reporter: wiley telling nbc news they tuned into a.m. radio
3:01 am
while on the run changing directions. he and matt were very close to being caught several times. >> the sheriff's deputy vehicle pupped up in the vicinity of where they were and they were somewhat surprised. they said matt fell backwards and, you know made some noise but the sheriff's deputy didn't locate them. >> reporter: wiley saying sweat said authorities were combing the forest floor while he was hiding in a tree stand used for hunting above them. this as we see a graphic image of richard matt moments after he was shot. he was lying on the ground a gunshot wound to the top of his skull. cnn learns the inmates started planning and cutting through the prison walls six months ago. the scrutiny intensifying on the correctional facility as a dozen employees are on leave like a
3:02 am
superintendent stephen who led andrew cuomo on a tour of how the convicts broke free. david sweat is saying they used hacksaws not power tools to cut through the cell wall then into the steam pipe. chris, hacksaws are going to be a lot less noisy than power tools. >> that's true. thank you very much. the question is, what's next for the escaped convict, sweat. his time in the hospital is nearing an end. let's get to sara with part of the story live at albany medical center sara? >> reporter: good morning. david sweat continues to recover and continues to talk which is good for authorities. he's placed in a part of the hospital a secure part of the hospital reserved only for prisoners. regular people do not stay in that part of the hospital. it's a secure area only for
3:03 am
prisoners. he's expected to be here a few more days then he will be released and released into the custody of the department of corrections, then they have a decision to make of where does he go? it is likely he will go back to the same prison he broke out of three weeks ago. he would be a problem for a variety of reasons. he could be considered a hero and also a target inside the prison where he was housed where he had broken out of. corrections officials will have to find another place for him, likely. the district attorney prosecutors him promised he will be charged with escape burglary and any other crimes he committed while on the run said it is unlikely he will get a plea deal. >> meanwhile, david sweat's mother says she's happy he was captured alive. she hopes he learned his lesson. pamela sweat says her son and
3:04 am
richard matt couldn't have pulled off the escape without help from inside. >> this was meticulously planned. they spent a lot of time they rehearsed it. are you surprised your son took the risk? that he did this? >> yeah. i was really surprised that he did it. i still say to this day, if that woman and whoever else was involved didn't give them that stuff, those guys would have never broke out of jail. they wouldn't have had nothing to do it with. you know i blame them as well as the two guys david and the other guy. they knew better. >> you are talking about joyce mitchell? >> well not just her, but other people that are in the prison system. >> this is your son. what is your hope for his future? >> well i just hope he learned his lesson and stays in where
3:05 am
he's at and i get to go see him. >> i know you haven't been able to see him yet. >> no. >> what would be your message to him if you saw him right now? >> i hope he gets better and i love him and i miss him. >> we do have breaking news overnight to share with you. the fbi and atf investigating a massive fire that ingulfed a black church in south carolina. the state grieving from the mass murder. many suspect arson. let's get to victor blackwell, live with the latest. victor? >> reporter: we are minutes from sunrise and getting our first look at the church. just the brick exterior walls is all that is left. the church was gutted by flames. the steeple brought down by a huge fire. 55 firefighters struggled to take the flames down. the atf is on scene. the fbi will be joining the investigation to determine the
3:06 am
cause. it has not been determined. they will look to see if it's the result of arson or a hate crime. as you mentioned, they have dealt with both before. in june 20 years ago, 1995 two members of the ku klux klan burned it to the ground pleaded guilty and sent to prison. president clinton in 1996 attended the rededication of this building and this congregation will now have to rebuild again. it's important to say, again, the cause of this fire has not been determined. i have spoken with the person who lives in this community, lived here his entire life he fears it's a repeat of what happened in the '90s. it's important to say this is the seventh black church across the south that's been destroyed by fire since the massacre two weeks ago. the naacp is now telling black churches to take precautions to prevent this from happening to their building. the atf will be going in once
3:07 am
the embers that are still blowing in this church cool off with sniffer dogs to determine what evidence they can collect to determine what happened here. we are expecting a news conference this morning. back to you. >> obviously, you have motivation and causation. seven churches in eight days ant be coincidence. we have news of a new cnn/orc poll out with a twist. you know what happens when you talk about immigrants? you gain in the polls. trump making a move to the positive despite the energy against him. let's bring in cnn senior political correspondent brianna, live in washington. surprising to me. >> i totally agree with you. this is a poll chris, when you look at it it's good news for jeb bush. he stands at 19 points. it's up six points from may.
3:08 am
he's emerging here as a bit of a humble front-runner. when people were surveyed about how he would do in certain categories the economy, illegal immigration, social issues they said bush would do the best. look at trump at 12%. he is bleeding off a tremendous amount of support from the field especially when talking marco rubio down eight points walker down four points that's the wisconsin governor. those are not a good poll for those guys for sure. look at democrats. hillary clinton is just taking it really taking the field as we have seen her doing. 57%. i will say it's down since may, but it's really within the margin of error. you can't say she's sliding, but bernie sanders getting excitement there. look at the national match ups. the good news for jeb bush is in a national match up against hillary clinton, he is doing the best. the bad news is that he is still
3:09 am
trailing her by 13 points. you look at how donald trump shapes up here 25 points behind hillary clinton in between jeb bush and trump you have marco rubio and chris christie. they are trailing the democratic front-runner. >> interesting, brianna. it's not all up for donald trump. mexico is saying it is not going to send a con tes tant to the next miss universe pageant citing his derogatory comments about mexicans. the donald is not apologizing. he's filing a $500 million lawsuit against a broadcaster for dropping coverage. we are live in washington with the latest on the donald. >> good morning, michaela. this keeps getting more interesting. trump isn't saying he's sorry. we know he's bold brash and proud. he's supremely confident and he
3:10 am
believes he's right on this illegal immigration issue. so far, it's not hurting him. he's surging in the polls. that may be why we saw that quintessential trump style in new hampshire. donald trump on the trail in new hampshire and refusing to back down from his comments about mexican immigrants. >> i understand everybody loves what i'm doing in terms of the border. we have to stop the illegals from coming in. >> reporter: the real estate mogul caused an uproar two weeks ago. >> they are bringing drugs, they are bringing crime, they are rapists, some i assume are good people. >> reporter: nbc universal cut ties with him saying they will no longer air miss usa or miss universe pageant. the outcry hasn't stopped there. mexico is withdrawaling citing his racist comments.
3:11 am
and the co-host said they won't take part either. trump is standing his ground. what nbc and univision did to these young women is disgraceful. they never had them in mind. >> reporter: trump filed a $500 million lawsuit against univision and hasn't ruled out a similar move against nbc. >> my first thing is univision. see how they respond to a $500 million, very good lawsuit. it's a very good lawsuit. let's see who comes next. >> reporter: but the former reality tv star wasn't the only speaking republican president wooing voters in new hampshire on tuesday. >> i want to be the next president of the united states. i intend to win this election. >> reporter: new jersey governor chris christie launched his presidential bid, telling a town hall -- >> you are going to sometimes shake your head and say i wish he hadn't said it that way. i guarantee, here is one thing you will never say, i don't know
3:12 am
what he thinks. >> reporter: christie and trump, offering their own brands of straight talk. the latest polling showing trump in second place among republicans nationally. chris christie is starting out until the low single digits. as for the lawsuit, univision says trump's complaint is false and legally ridiculous. the company will vigorously defend the case. michaela? >> we will be watching. here is something to watch. tonight, trump is going to sit down with don lemon. they are going to talk about the fire storm and the presidential race at 10:00 p.m. the white house and cuba set to simultaneously announce an agreement to restore diplomatic relations. washington and havana set to reopen for the first time in more than 50 years. president obama and castro announced the relations in december. since then washington removed cuba from the list of country that sponsor terror.

greece becoming the first developed economy to default on its debt. they did not make the $1.7 billion payment owed. greece now asking for a two-year bailout from europe the third in six years. the country is asking for $32 billion. finance ministers will discuss requests again, today. back now to the top story. the manhunt may be over but the fallout continues with 12 prison employees put on leave. an escapee, david sweat reveals he and matt practiced their get away the night before breaking through. arthur is the former director. thanks for being here. it's very interesting that david sweat is now talking, according to state officials and he's talking a lot. one of the things he claims is that he was the master mind of this entire escape. now, why would he be telling
3:14 am
authorities that he was the master mind? what's in it for him? >> good morning, alisyn. i think this is just feeding his ego at this point. everything that comes out of his mouth has to be correspondoborated. they know what the plans were. they have to bounce it off and compare it to what mitchell is saying. with matt being deceased you know you are never going to get a story, never get the true story as to what happened. what you have now is an individual trying to feed his ego. he's a narcissistic psychopath so you are going to hear this stuff. some of it probably is true. i'm sure the basis of it is true. you are going to get a lot of embellishment coming from him. >> another thing he is saying is they did a dry run before they escaped. listen to how the d.a. explain what is they did first.
3:15 am
>> they did get out to that point of the village and did actually pop one of the manholes up. they felt due to there being a number of houses in that area that it might not be a good spot to exit from. so they located a manhole in between that manhole and the tunnel system where they escaped from. >> what do you think of that possibility, they made it as far as the street poked their head out, didn't think it was a good place and went back into the prison for the next night? >> i think it tells you how emboldened they were about the security going on at the honor block. obviously, the inspector general for the state of new york and the fbi are looking at exactly what was going on in that cell block area. i'm just glad it didn't seem at this point in time to go out into the genera population
3:16 am
this type of lax security. i think the honor block is where they have to concentrate their efforts. we have heard of dry runs in the past in other major escapes that occurred in the united states. obviously, that comes down to a lack of complacency and security. >> erin burnett spoke to david sweat's mother on cnn last night. she had a theory why she thinks he's talking as well as who she holds responsible. listen to this. >> no he always told on himself all the time when he was a kid. i was surprised he did it. i say to this day, if that woman didn't -- and whoever else was involved didn't give them that stuff, those guys would have never broke out of jail. they wouldn't have had nothing to do it with. so i kind of you know i blame them as well as the two guys. >> his mom is blaming joyce
3:17 am
mitchell and the other prison guard for providing the tools. >> yes. obviously, they needed help to get out and what mitchell provided and what the tools were able to do for them obviously got them out of jail. i'm not surprised she's making that connection. obviously, law enforcement is making that connection. if they were in a care and custody type of environment, this would have never happened to begin with. >> care and custody type of environment. how does that look different from what they were in? >> if you look at what was going on in the general population it's more of a care and custody environment than the honor block where you didn't have to wear prison garb. you had loose security. you were able to get to different parts of the prison that the rest of the population wasn't allowed to. you were basically a trustee. i question the fact how can you put two question on it that committed murder number one and
3:18 am
committed murder in the way they did in that type of environment. >> all those questions need to be answered with this investigation. thank you for being on "new day." >> thanks alisyn. >> over to chris. >> say it with me usa! usa! the american women shutting out germany, only the best team in the world, not anymore. a gripping match. let's bring in andy scholes. is it time to bring up teddy? >> this was an amazing win for team usa. they knew all along, they had to get past the germans if they wanted to win it all. last night's semifinal game top ranked team versus the second ranked team. the game was scoreless in the second half. germany had the golden opportunity to take the lead in the 60th minute. their shot is wide left. alex morgan gets taken down in
3:19 am
the box giving the u.s. a penalty of their own and lloyd, who has been awesome in the past few games, drilled it home to give u.s. the lead. the 84th minute put the game away. team usa pulls off the upset beating germany, 2-0. they now advance to the world cup final. >> we knew we had this in us. this team had a lot of confidence and, you know we have done a good job of blocking out you guys and distractions and, you know i think focused on what we need to do. we had every belief we could win this game. >> it's been a collective team performance. we didn't come here to just make the final, we came here to win it. >> team usa awaits the winner from tonight's match between england and japan. the final is sunday night at 7:00 eastern. chris, four years ago, team usa lost a heart breaker to japan in the final game in penalty kicks.
3:20 am
you know team usa likely wants a rematch between japan, if they have their choice. >> a lot of due excitement. teddy, you remember him in the men's. >> i do remember him. >> we need the women's equivalent of him. it will be great. >> oh my gosh my 10-year-old daughters are soccer players. they were to riveted, at times they had their hands over their eyes. it was so spenceful for them. >> the girl who, you know the penalty was on she thought she caused the game and the team rallied around her. a great moment. >> there are good lessons. >> great team. in the 8:00 hour we are going to talk live with two team usa players, kelly o'hara scored the second goal and abby wambach.

there is a poll worth hearing this morning. some surprises in the cnn/orc poll. good news for jeb bush but also donald trump. the pair are the only republican candidates with double digit support. bush is 19 with trump following at 12. trump is in the race. he leapfrogged all these people. the other headline is when they line up against hillary clinton, they are taking a beat down at this point. still early. what does it mean? we have cnn political reporter ryan liza and author of "you are the brand." >> steve, how do you explain in the middle of all the controversy over trump's mexican comments he's number two in the poll? >> you are going to ask me to
3:26 am
explain donald trump? i have no idea. i'm here so i better try. >> the respondents. what are they seeing? >> tough be kidding me. when i saw donald trump and heard him say what he said those horrific things about mexican immigrants i thought, there it is we finally see who donald trump really is. most of us knew. people say, oh a candidate who says what he thinks. i'm thinking you are kidding me? my analysis is this people are tired, most people or many people those in the republican primary, are tired of people who try to figure out what they want to hear. at least trump says what he thinks. he may be back pedalling, which you are, you are trying to figure out how to say you didn't say what you said. the fact is chris christie is saying, wait that was my role except he has a real job and has to be accountable for what he
3:27 am
says and does. trump doesn't. >> is there a chance the surge in the poll is about his popularity in celebrity despite, not because of what he said about the immigrants? >> absolutely. i think steve is right. there is a visceral like for someone in the republican primaries who is one, very anti-obama and very, sort of, conservative on the immigration imshoes. conservative voters are not where jeb bush is. i wouldn't mistake his support for a dominance in the republican primaries. we saw this in 2012 where we had a big republican field. remember this? michele bachmann leading in the polls in the summer of 20u 2011 then a phenomena of surging and declining. one candidate always staying up
