the department of homeland security and the fbi urging authorities nationwide to be extra vigilant. >> saw yesterday's security jitters certainly after that scare at the washington navy yard with law enforcement rushing in great numbers towards the scene. we give with boris sanchez live at penn station. >> reporter: good morning. tens of millions of americans are hitting the road this weekend. and we've seen an expanded law enforcement here at penn station in new york and other parts of the country. they're aiming to make sure everyone has a safe and secure fourth of july. >> they're reaching out on social media telling people it's a holiday, we ought to kill people. >> reporter: police and fbi on heightened alert as nearly 42 million people will travel this holiday weekend. according to triple a, the most in eight years. this amid social media chatter by isis supporters and caused by the terror group to strike in the west. >> i don't think they are capable of a large scale attack.

going into this holiday weekend treating each and every concern seriously. this all started to unfold thursday morning when a woman inside the navy yard thought she heard gunshots and called 911. within minutes the building was on lock down. it prompted a boost in security at the capitol. white house tours also cancelled. three hours went by as police went painstakingly floor by floor, room by room at the navy yard searching the building. it all of course ended up to be nothing but the d.c. police chief here says this shows d.c. is ready going into this holiday weekend. >> we're aware what the discussion and chatter is around the fourth of july events and all those threats and we take this into account. we change our tactics up but we never lower our posture zplrchlts and this all comes at

a time when there is a change this security at the white house not related to this terrorist threat but related to all those white house fence jumpers. they installed very sharp spikes on the white house fence. could prison officials have missed a key sign about the escape plans of richard matt and david sweat. the buffalo news is reporting that richard matt sent a letter to husband daughter just before the breakout suggesting he wouldn't be in prison for long. jean casarez is live outside the clinton correctional facility in dannemora new york. >> reporter: it is an unnamed law enforcement source talking to the newspaper saying that on june 9th the daughter of richard matt received a letter that had been sent before the breakout. it says quote, i always promised you i would see you on the outside. i'm a man of my word.

his daughter immediately went to law enforcement. she had no knowledge of the breakout at all. but she received security during the time that he was on the loose. and we have research and the new york department of corrections does not check outgoing mail of inmates unless by written authorization of the superintendent they believe there's a security risk that there's information they need from that mail for protection of the community. they did not have that. now, we've also learned a little bit more about what happened one week ago today. we want to show you a trailer, an abandoned trailer off the side of the road not far from the roadway. that is the trailer that richard matt was in last friday afternoon when he fired shots at that camper that was driving down the street which really alerted authorities that he was in the vicinity.

back to law enforcement on high alert for this holiday weekend with millions set to celebrate jul 4th th july 4th. let's bring in a counter terrorism analyst. fran townsend is a former counter terrorism advisor. fran i want to start with you. there's always chatter around holiday weekends. is what they're hearing this weekend different than usual? >> it is qualitatively different. what you're hearing from intelligence officials in particular is that it's not just chatter but it's clear that they have talk signals intelligence intercepts related to this holiday weekend which has caused them to expend the extraordinary

resources we see like here in new york. >> we've had some of our experts who say even this morning that officials are scaring people. is it hype or is there something specific that's making them go to these extra lengths? >> it's clearly not hype. there's specific intelligence that causes them to take these measures. the law enforcement measures that are being taken are incredibly expensive. they don't take that unless they believe there is a real reason for them to have to do that. >> let me bring you in because there have been many officials who are saying that they are quite concerned about what's going to happen this weekend. let me play for your congressman peter king of new york. >> there's great concern. going back to the fbi and homeland security over the last two or i three weeks, i would say this is the most intense level of concern i've seen maybe

since 9/11. >> since 9/11? >> yeah. when we break down the concern it's important to understand what the islamic state has been doing that's different from what's been done in the past. when we used to talk about holiday weekends and preparing for a terrorist attack, we used to think of a big terrorist attack. what the islamic state has been very effective at is mobile iedsingieds ing -- mobilizing people. they're good at trading this feeling of intimacy among people who are half a world away. if you look at lone wolf terrorist attack patterns carried out by single individuals, they're spiked within the last year. in part because social media really serves the role that groups used to serve for terrorist attacks. it used to be that to get someone to carry out an attack would require a group that spurs

them onto action and doesn't back out. social media is now filling that role. it's not so much al qaeda or the islamic state's external operations capability but rather a lone wolf type of attack, a much smaller attack that's harder to prevent and the islamic state is so good at mobilizeing people to do. >> let me put up on the screen where they have made terror related arrests in just the last couple of months. these are 18 different states. does that mean somebody was about to act or they just have an inkling on social media. >> it means they're about to act. you can espouse all sorts of horrible ideas and our first amendment protects this. these are people prepared to act on that speech or those

thoughts. you look at the attack on a tunisian beach. one man with an automatic weapon mows down dozens of people sitting in bathing suits. with all the large public gatherings, you understand one people with access to a single weapon can kill dozens of people. >> it's troubling. why should any of us leave our houses this weekend? >> because the odds are overwhelmingly in favor of you not being struck by a terrorist attack. on july 4th not just some but many people will be murdered across the country. but that doesn't cause us to stay in our houses. dealing with an age in which terrorism plays a role is understanding terrorism is designed to scare us. july 4th is a wonderful holiday. this is a great nation and i think people should go out and

enjoy it. we're talking about potential for danger here and that potential exists. but also as americans we're resilient. it shouldn't scare us. it shouldn't cause us to stay at home with when the odds are overwhelming against terrorism affecting anyone of us this weekend. the u.s. suffering its first measles death in 12 years. the department of health and human services says the victim is a woman from washington state who was exposed to measles at a medical facility during an outbreak in spring. her illness went undetected and was confirmed only through an autopsy. a potential speed bump in restoration of diplomat relations with cuba. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says republicans are unlikely to confirm an

for a reason. not because the republicans agree with him, but i think they're circling the wagons around trump because they feel he's been treated unfairly. certainly i don't hear it that way. there are 54 million latinos in this country who don't hear it that way and find this inaccurate, imprecise and insulting. i think the republican party needs to stand up very clearly. if not, maybe we should elect macy's. they have more guts than the republican brand these days. how are they going to stand up to isis in iran and putin if they can't stand up to donald trump? >> ru binbin i love you, but let's not compare macy's to isis. i don't like isis comparisons and metaphors in any context.

was there any issue with your son in terms of divorce or the separation with his mom? >> absolutely. he wanted to go back to live with his mother. this is the second time that his mother had sent him to live with me. the first time he was having trouble he was sent to live with me. we got him back on track. all the pictures you see with him smiling on the honor roll and everything. that was after third grade that his mother sent him to live with me. after he got straight f's in the fifth grade his mother sent him to live with me. >> did you have a good relationship? >> absolutely i did. >> let me show you a text message. this isn't a surprise. you saw it in court. let me pull up this text message that your wife sent about your son when he was missing that wrote this text because you both believed that he was trying to avoid these workouts. it said we need to get this money and ship his [ bleep ] i am going to gear him towards completing one of these ex-- maybe

time and effort may help but i have no reason to be hopeful at this point. let's get this money and get him gone. you know i'm an aunt of a lot of children and i help at risk youth. so i'm going to take issue with get him gone. as a human when you hear the word get him gone that's going to set people off. >> if you look at the context, getting him gone to military school or boarding school. my son needed more help than i could give him at home. i'm a registered nurse and with a mental health care background. my southernn needed additional help. he was getting ready to be sent. this was my plan. the day or a couple of hours after i made this very clear to him, then he ran away again. he needed the help. if you see a child that you've been working with for years and

character. there was no acting required. >> he's your governor. he's an actor. what comes first for you? >> what comes first for me because i'm arnold's generation is mr. universe. this guy has had success in a variety of arenas. >> tell us about the movie. why did you want to do it? >> the script is what it first comes down to. when they told me they wanted me to play this part i always am i little skeptical about is this a story worth telling? i read the story and it's great the way they evolved around's character. but it also is one of those that stand on its own. you don't have to be a fan of the franchise to get what's going on. >> some kids haven't seen the first ones. i'm sure they'll be taking a visit to netflix to recap. you talk about range when you talk about an actor.

you have terrific range. i fell in love with your bad boy guy from oz. we looked at all the awards you dominated with whiplash. story and character always matter to you. >> absolutely. that goes back to the days when i was doing theater and barely paying my rent on my crappy sublet in held'sl's kishtchen. i can't say every choice i've ever made has been perfect and wonderful. >> there's people watching in that place in a crappy sublet in hell's kitchen say nothing to roles that their agent would otherwise want them to take. did you have those doubts those moments where you're like what am i doing? >> yeah. i still have those moments. what am i doing? ridiculous. >> just owning it. just winning oscars. let's talk think about. did you oscar win change your life? >> well, it brings more

opportunity, you know. and more recognizability. is that an actual word? >> it is now. >> we just came back from bopping around europe following my son's orchestra. >> and were there crowds surrounding you who knew you? >> it's not like i get mobbed. it's not like i'm brad pitt. but this mug definitely is recognizable now. >> i want you to tell us about a project that is very close to your heart. it's a book. it's called "a short walk home" written by a deerar friend of yours. >> he runs the ald foundation. david's afflicted by it and it's a disease that has robbed many families of their young boys. and he tells the story about he and his wife jamie going through the loss of his stepson logan. and ultimately it's an uplifting

story about the power of love really. >> we need a lot more of that in the world. >> your message at the oscars, you told everybody to call home call their mom, call their dad. why is that important? >> as i went through the sort of awards season you know i kept coming back to what's most important to me which is family. so i want to talk about my wife and my kids and my parents too, who the last two and a half years my brother and sister and i lost our dad and then our mom. that connection doesn't go away you know because they pass on. and i want to make sure that people who do have a parent alive here you know take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy while it's here. really it's similar to the message in david's book that i did the forward for, you know i mean be here now and appreciate what you have and just love on people. >> i'm going to say amen to
