we are there with the latest. dan? >> reporter: this story is going to galvanize critics of the immigration policy. he was deported five times to native mexico. he got to san francisco, got hold of a gun, shot and killed a woman. >> did you shoot kate, the lady who was on pier 14? >> yes. >> he is behind bars in california this morning, but shouldn't be in the united states at all. sanchez is an undocumented immigrant and repeat felon. the victim is 31-year-old kate steinley. shot at a pier last wednesday. >> he was gasping for every breath. >> reporter: kate's father was with her the whole time. no words were exchanged. this was a random act of

violence. >> i have solace that i was with her, but i have the overwhelming grief of a father. >> sanchez has been deported five times to mexico. in a jailhouse interview with kgo, he says the lure of a paycheck kept him returning. >> i'm looking for a job in restaurant or roofing, landscaping or construction. >> reporter: the shooting seized up by donald trump, the presidential hopeful who made headlines for his remarks. he said the tragic shooting is yet another example of why we must secure our bodier. san francisco officials said they had no legal basis to hold him. under the so-called sanctuary law, they didn't transfer him back because there was no order for his removal.

representation of southern heritage and those who see it as hate red. state lawmakers will begin the debate of whether or not to remove the flag from a monument here on state grounds in columbia south carolina. nikki haley called for the removal of the flag coming days after a photo emerged of the charleston church shooter holding up the flag. >> take the flag down it's going to piss more people up. >> why is that? >> this is our heritage. it is who we are. >> it's a symbol. whether it's up there or in a museum it's a symbol. it will determine whether south carolina is in the news for the wrong reasons. >> reporter: for the bill to pass, it will require two-thirds vote. over the weekend, more controversy. nascar holding the first racing series in the south since asking

fans to voluntarily stop waving the flag. some did it anyway. john? >> i'll take it nick. it will be interesting to see what south carolina decides. david sweat back behind bars this morning, transferred from an upstate new york hospital to another maximum prison. what is his punishment there? let's get to boris sanchez. >> good morning. david sweat shot and captured last sunday. yesterday at 3:00 a.m. he was transferred from a hospital in albany to the five points correctional facility in rom romulus, new york. it is a maximum security facility. it houses 1300 inmates with a security staff of about 511 personnel on hand.

once sweat passes a 24-hour suicide watch, he will be moved to a special housing unit where he will be held alone. it will have a bed, sink toilet facility controlled towel and a table to write on. aside from that he will be kept under surveillance for 23 hours a day. it will make another attempted escape less likely. >> a lot of changes coming to clinton. thanks for joining us for that update. greece is facing an uncertain financial situation. the finance minister quitting. the vote putting greece on the path to ditch the euro all together. issa is live in athens for us today. issa? >> reporter: good morning, michaela. there's a sense of triumph and trepidation in athens this

morning. many people pleased with the 60% no backing against the proposals put together. they said enough is enough. we do not want more austerity. the reality will set in. so much work is ahead. we know that the greek prime minister who saw this as a triumph now has to find a solution with europe. he's been meeting with opposition groups trying to get the support of the opposition party to back him when it comes to meeting tomorrow with the groups meeting to decide exactly what has to proceed. key today will be holding the trump card the european bank. they will decide whether to place more money into the banking system. the 60 euro limit might be reduced further. that is a huge concern. we have seen in the last couple hours, the finance minister resigned. some say it is a piece of europe

to help with the negotiations. john? >> two hours until the u.s. markets open. it could be a very interesting day. by that i mean rocky. >> pressure is mounting and time is running short. they are closer than ever but u.s. secretary of state, john kerry cautions negotiations can go either way with that tuesday deadline looming. we are live at the white house. >> john both sides say they have never been closer to getting a deal but admitting there are still key issues left unresolved. there's been a flurry of intense negotiations over the weekend. five meetings alone between secretary of state, john kerry and the foreign minister in the last 24 hours. there were tentative agreements over the weekend, the secretary of state taking time to emphasize there's no agreement, down playing the expectations.

there are key sticking points. the ones that bedevilled the negotiators since the start of the process, including the level of inspections and unresolved questions of the past nuclear activities and the big one, the relief and time line of relief on the sanctions on iran. republicans in congress are skeptical of this deal. the chairman of the senate committee spoke with secretary of state kerry over the weekend and he cautioned him because this is a legacy issue for the president, not to rush into any deal. >> i urged him to please take their time try to make sure these last remaining red lines that haven't been crossed, they have crossed so many do not get crossed and qualitatively, they don't make it worse than where it already is. >> officials on both sides have already been laying the ground work for delaying the deadline a bit more.

went through it. couldn't believe it went in after three minutes in then to get another one soon after that and another one soon after that in the first 16 minutes, just a crazy start to the game. >> okay. >> i have never seen anything like it. i watch a lot of soccer. i have never seen 16 minutes like that ever. besides scoring at will you have powers of magic. you have a premonition. you visualized this game beforehand. but you thought you were going to score foul goals. my question to you this morning, you must be incredibly disappointed. >> yeah i guess it wasn't good enough. yeah no the mind is everything. you know it's just i found dreams of this as a younger player being part of a world cup team and playing in a world cup final, that's every soccer players dream to win a world

cup. we just made history tonight. >> it is kind of extra awesome. there's so many levels of awesome. the fatigue this morning is warranted, but totally allowable. what's interesting is you can silence the critics. we talked about that a couple days ago. i asked how you were going to block out the critics and focus on the game. it allows you to put to bed the comparisons to the '99 world cup team the 2011 team. it's a new game, is it not? >> absolutely. you know we all stayed true to what we believed in this world cup. yes, our defense was solid from start to finish. yes, our attack took a little bit to get going, but we all had faith. we knew our best was yet to come. we kept saying it. we kept believing it. the coaching staff believed it. we performed one of the most epic games in soccer.

>> can we talk about your third goal the one from mid field? had you practiced that? >> no. i did that once before in a training practice. i have never really attempted it ever in a game like that. it was just one of those things where you don't think. i remember winning the ball off one of the players, pushing it in front of me and fully striking it as perfectly as i could. as i saw the ball launching up i'm thinking to myself wow, this is on frame to go to the back of the net. i wasn't sure if the keeper was going to get it and punch it out. it hit the post and went in. i couldn't believe it. i started running around smiling and cheering. >> you kicked it. everyone is going she's not really doing that.

oh my god, she's doing that. it was crazy. that was the minute it went into a cosmic stage. i have 8-year-old twin boys. this weekend, they were outside playing soccer. they are soccer fanatics. one was saying i'm alex lloyd, the other said i'm carli lloyd. you captivated boys and girls across the country. it's got to be amazing. >> it is. i think i have flown under the radar for a majority of time with this team. i put my head down i have gone to work i worked hard. i do all the right things on and off the field. i just want to be a good role model to all the young kids and boys out there as well. just to teach them the importance of doing all the right things in order to accomplish your dreams. >> and you are doing it let me tell you. talk about a great gift for the

united states on the fourth of july holiday weekend, carli. i want to ask you about the sun. we have video showing how that stadium has a retractable roof. they left the roof open. you won this game clear, fair and square. there was question whether it impeded the japanese goalkeeper and if it came into play. the coin toss gave you a big advantage of the outside? >> yes. that was my job, to hopefully win the coin toss and pick the correct side. so we picked the shaded side. i, honestly i'm not sure how the sun was in the keeper's eyes for that first half. it was, you know an interesting stadium where, obviously, part of the sun was shining on part of the field. but, at the end of the day, we are both looking at some ways into the sun at some point.

states at least six secretaries of state. he knows diplomacy and negotiations. i want to get inside that room right now. the secretary says there is no deal yet. what i want to know are they pretty much done right now? is this all over except for the signing and the dotting the "i"'s and crossing the "t"'s? >> if the breakthroughs aren't in now, houston, we have a problem. the issue has to be how to render them into language that allows iran and the united states to remain on the same page after the agreement is done verification access to military sites, what to do to limit iran's research and development on tencentrifuges. there are no apparent crises. you don't see the lead

negotiator back to tehran. you don't hear them saying the americans are forcing us to capitulate. there's an effort to lower expectations on the part of the secretary of state. clearly a sense there's so much invested and so much to lose. frankly, i would be stunned. i know about end game surprised. i would be stunned, if sometime this week there weren't an agreement. >> no one hair is on fire. that's a great, great point. what's happening behind closed doors as john kerry trying to get last minute concessions? it doesn't sound like it. is it about selling it to american people? >> remember you have foreign ministers who have to at least own this and want to be a part of the end game. again, if you have a 50 to 80 page agreement with six or even

more annexes that deal with the technical issues there's a lot of language. frankly, i think the real challenge is not getting a consensus between the u.s. and iran it's how to bridge what will be a huge hurdle here in washington. the administration has created real objectives. bob corker last night, whose name is on the iran sanctions review act identified a couple of how to deal with military programs. are they going to come clean? what to do about access anywhere anytime, any place inspections. that seems to me to be very tough to render in a way that congress is going to approve. i expect congress is going to decide it is not a great deal and the president will have to veto and will the white house be able to sustain the deal. >> who is getting the better

deal here, based on what we know? >> there are no good deals with iran. once they mastered the fuel how to make the material once we conceded the right to enrich once we agreed they are left with a large infrastructure the fact is the question is how to minimize the risk. at the end of the day, you are going to end up with a slower smaller, easily monitored problem. the iranians are going to get billions of dollars in sanctions in five six, seven years from now. they will be left with an infrastructure to give them the capacity to weaponize if they choose. this is an arms control agreement to manage not solve a problem. >> is the u.s. safer if they go through with the deal? is the u.s. safer one year from now, two years from now, three years from now?

>> in the early years, you diffuse the agreement. an iran that is going to have more resources to pursue the ambitions. if you are looking for a way to kick the can down the road and maybe, just maybe preserve the option and the hope because it's not based on experience but hope that in fact the iranian regime down the road could transform and lose the desire and motivation to have a nuclear weapons threshold state. then i suspect among the believers and those who want to believe in this this ultimately could emerge. right now, this is a business deal. we get to diffuse the nuclear crisis for now. no preemptive military strike. you make it american military strike. the sanctions regime should you need it the iranians get a lot of money, a lot of legitimacy

a north carolina deck to collapse over the holiday. 24 people plunged ten feet to the ground from the structure gave way. the injured range in age, 5 to 24. take a look at this rescue of a hiker who fell nearly 30 feet in rugged terrain in the suburbs. officials say this 45-year-old was hiking alone in the state park when he fell. he called 911 and rescue crews got the man on board. the train was too steep to carry him out. they used a police helicopter to get him off the mountain. no word on his condition at this hour. >> wow, goodness. a frightening moment there. let's turn to charleston three weeks after the massacre. the legislature is set to debate the removal of the confederate flag from the perch outside the statehouse. removing the flag requires a

two-thirds majority a threshold that could reach the senate but in trouble in the house. we want to bring in former south carolina state senator and ben ferguson is here with us. morning to you. to the two of you, i want to play the sound from governor nikki haley predicting how she thinks it is going to play out. take a listen. >> i don't think this is going to be easy. i don't think that it's going to be painless but i do think it will be respectful and it will move swiftly. >> the same prediction as the governor of south carolina? >> well this is not going to be an easy journey. we have attempted to take this flag down for many years. it was put up in 1961-'62 with the civil right progress we made in the state. there have been many bills filed. while this success is within our

the past. we are not getting away from what the state was. this isn't, you know we understand it's not just about risism. it's about heritage and history, but time to be in the history section of our state. i think they are going to have a tough road doing that as people say, okay we are getting away from the tragedy. we are going to debate this for what it is. the longer they wait, the harder it will be. i want to show you the cnn polls. i found this fascinateing there wasn't more opposition more resounding opposition among those being polled. 54% of those polled say the flag should not be removed from government buildings. are you surprised the number is so high? >> i'm not surprised. i think that there are a lot of people in south carolina and throughout the south that are tired of having this debate. >> right. >> now that we are here what you see is not only do we have the economic pressure not only do we have the boeings and

sunoco's moving toward taking it down you have nascar. for a long period to have time that was the last con stitch wan si. now, they are saying the flag should come down. what we see is a ground swell, this momentum. i whole heartedly agree, this isn't about erasing the history of south carolina in any way, shape, form but putting it into the proper context. it's so hurtful to many put it in a museum to learn from it and teach kids about this troublesome past. >> there's an important part of nascar. they encouraged their fans to leave the confederate flags at home. people did not comply. >> no. >> it probably wasn't a surprise to many. do you think nascar should have taken it further and called for an all-out ban?

>> i don't. nascar is a place where there's a lot of people -- if you have ever been to a nascar race, people refer to themselves as good ole american red necks, god bless america. when they fly the flag it has nothing to do with racism. >> is that the problem? is that a disconnect? heritage or faith, what is it a symbol of? >> i think south carolina doing the right thing tryinging to bring it down. i also don't like it when we say because of what one person did and because of how they flew that flag that somehow everyone should take it down instantly. for many in nascar it means fast cars and beer. that's what it means to them, bringing the family together in an rv and celebrating good ole american fast car sport. that's truly what it means to them. i think they should have the right to fly that if that's what they want to do. i mean ultimately if this

>> that was the cousin of the 7-year-old victim in a rash of gun violence in chicago. seven people killed including the young boy. dozens more left wounded. joining us now is pastor ira of greater st. john bible church. they are offering a reward for the capture of the shooter and the church also is home to the family members of amar'e brown. thank you for being with us this morning. we know the family members are heart broken. how do you explain these sickening and senseless violence and murders chicago is seeing right now? >> when you look in chicago, there is a combination of social dispair, proliferation of guns and the underground drug economy. that is the -- those are the reasons that there is so much violence taking place here in our city. >> according to the chicago police department the bullet

that killed 7-year-old amar'e was intended for his father. he is a high ranking gang member arrested 45 times. as a church leader and community leader what can you do about gang violence? >> number one, there's no nothing anymore powerful than love. we have to teach love preach love and empower families mentoring programs. these are the things the church can do. it's not just the church alone. when you look at the violence that exists in our city there's been a collaborative failure of multiple institutions. families are fragmented. children in our community, 72% of them are raised in a single parent household, then you have poor schools. then you have issues with the police department. and then the city everybody has

a role to play in restoring some sense of calm in our city. >> when you say we have issues with the police department you know the police chief said they beefed up police officers on the street this weekend. they say they hadded 30% more police officers this weekend. what more do you want to see them do? >> bottom line is we must all own this issue of violence. it's all about problems and i can tell you, i'm not blaming the police for this. the police did not pull this trigger. the police did not kill this baby. someone in my neighborhood someone who lives among us that's the culprit. that's the perpetrator of this crime. but, i'm basically saying that everyone has a role to play. it's going to take a concerted effort from all of us. the bottom line is we have to address the core of the problem. we keep looking at the symptoms
