which candidates are now trying to angle to be second choice for these donald trump supporters? >> most of the candidates have been critical of donald trump. they haven't been overtly critical. but when asked they've said his rhetoric is unacceptable. ted cruz is the son of a cuban immigrant. he has come out and been supportive of donald trump. ted cruz could benefit from this because he hasn't been to critical of donald trump throughout this immigration issue. >> let's listen to what rick perry said during a stop in iowa. >> we're going to continue to see events like we saw last week where a young lady was murdered

come. it's been in the air for a couple of days on precisely when his decision would be made. it does seem that what we're seeing here today is a the gathering of all the p5+1 ministe ministers. the germans have been here for a number of days so lavrov is coming to the table late. that means that we are really in the final stages again. but i think kerry this morning talking about hope is the most optimistic we've been hearing him in a few days. he said there were still tough choices to be made yesterday. it was that simple. the french foreign minister said everything is on the stabtable. it's now time to make decisions. secretary kerry is saying that real decisions are being made. and lavrov is coming. we're getting to that point again.

13 minutes past the hour. new this morning, a mysterious blast shut down a beach and sent a woman to the hospital. this happened yesterday at salty brine beach in rhode island. witnesses described as sounding like an m80 boom or a grenade. officials have no idea who or what caused the blast. >> reporter: salty brine beach is expected to reopen this morning but the investigation will go on. rhode island authorities have removed sand from the area looking for clues after reports of a small explosion and an injury of a 50-year-old woman. the exact cause is a mystery.

>> explosion is a word that came during the initial reports. i can tell you from personally witnessing the sight, there appears to have been some ground disturbance there. >> reporter: the woman was sitting in a chair at the tide line. witnesses reported a boom. the force pushed up into nearby rocks and then she fell into the sand. >> there are fractures in the sand. there's definitely something that happened here. >> reporter: the state bomb squad and the fire marshals office are investigating. >> there was some type of noise and there was some type of energy transfer. we have no evidence or indication this was a device. this could be natural, it could be man made. at this point we don't know. >> reporter: the beach was declared off limits for the day. >> i had literally just stood up and walked away from there.

mayor stephanie rawlings blake. the woman has been charged with second degree assault. the mayor was not hurt and continued with the event. the event was held at the same location where rioting occurred over the death of freddie gray. family members, police and volunteers will continue scouring farmland and wooded areas this morning for any sign of a missing kentucky mother of five. crystal rogers is her name. her sister spoke with "new day" yesterday saying she would never have left her children. a reward is being offered for her return to her family. rogers was last seen july 3rd by her boyfriend. he says he has nothing to do with her disappearance. >> in ocala florida the original flag was removed after a protest

now and flights have been suspended at a nearby airport. secretary of state john kerry says he's hopeful there could be a deal with iran's nuclear program. they are, quote, getting to some real negotiations. marathon negotiations in vienna are extended into tomorrow. developing story out of the brussel this is morning. there's been a sudden shift it seems in the high stakes talks to help boil out greece. intense negotiations happening right now. i want to bring in richard quest. richard, i understand you talked sto to some of the eurozone ministers this morning. what are they saying to you about this deal? >> reporter: well, they're basically saying that it's highly unlikely, almost impossible, that an actual deal will be done here in brussels today. so much so that the meeting that was meant to be held at the end

of the day with all the european union leaders, all 28 of them, that meeting has now been cancelled. instead it will be left to the 19 leaders who are just part of the eurozone. and what they've really got to do is try and find some way not to throw the whole thing over the cliff while also recognizing that a full deal can't be done. whether that means kicking the can down the road or in some shape or form asking the greeks to prove that they mean business, because that's what this is about, the greek lack of trust. people simply don't believe that the greek either will or are capable of keeping to their word. >> well, we know that the bank there is in greece have been shut down for two whole weeks. they're running out of run. is there any gauge as to how much longer greece can go on?

>> reporter: that's the real problem in many ways. but as they would say here, your urgency is no reason why hear in brussels they need to actually do a deal that's not the right deal. the banks are probably out of money by tuesday or wednesday of next week at best. so they're hoping that if they manage to do just enough that the european equivalent of the federal reserve, the ecb, the european central bank, they will agree to start lending once again. but every minister i spoke to point eed out the complexity of this issue. the difficulty. this is a phrase we hear again and again. set of circumstances.difficult - there is no guarantee that by the end of the day there will be anything concrete on the table. >> richard quest, so grateful for the insight today. thank you so much. >> let's bring in an

international relations specialist. the eurozone leaders want the greek government to prove that they mean business. obviously there's been a series of reversals and revisions over the short and long-term. how does the greek government do that? >> it's another one of these whiplash moments that we've seen so many of in the past week. this is going to be a very difficult process. we've been talking about this for days. the last 24 hours have been especially pivotal. the european union remains essentially an indecisive body. you have the rules obsessed faction in the north led by germany and the nevtherlands.

on a large scale, if they can't sort out problems regarding one small economy inside the european union how is president obama and washington going to work with the european union on major issues? >> you have questions about the other world event that is the eurozone and the euro group would have to get involved with. how long could this process go on? >> we have to keep in mind that this is really not about an immediate deal. if the european finance ministers are able to come to agreement on this particular issue, it's simply to enter the next phase, which is to launch negotiations, a process which may take several weeks if not several months. so this is very very far away from any type of decisive outcome. but it is critical to overcome

this enormous trust deficit that's largely been set by the negotiating strategy of the greek government. in many ways it's probably incumbent on greek prime minister alexis tsipras to pull a nixon in china moment and come from the radical left and sell to his marxist colleagues. but the only person who can do that is a leader in greece, who can go to his people, sell the reforms, begin enacting some of these reforms in the next 24 to 48 hours. >> he'll lose the support of the people if he does that, won't he? >> i don't believe so. i think the greeks have been so shocked by events over the last several days. they understand now what it means to collapse into the cashless, semibarter economy. they understand they really have

no choice. it's either this really bad situation or an utterly catastrophic situation going forward that is filled with hopelessness and despair. i think he can do this. the other party leaders are willing to work with him. he's going to have to shed some of the radical members of his coalition. i think in greece they can make the kind of changes that are needed to satisfy some of the more incal -- >> so many things to unpack here. always appreciate the insight. >> thanks for having me. >> sure. today is pope francis's last day in south america. he'll celebrate mass soon at a sports field. thousands of people expected to attend that.

whether or not he was legally insane when he fired. that was back in 2012. >> reporter: the judge in the james holmes movie theater shooting trial told the jurors to go home for the weekend, get some rest and then hear his instructions on tuesday morning. after that, the defense and prosecution closing arguments. james holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. and much of what the jurors heard in this trial was very nuanced testimony about sanity, delusions and schizophrenia. of course the defense is arguing that james holmes was completely insane when he went into that movie theater and killed 12 people and injured 70 more, armed to the teeth and dressed in protective clothing. the prosecution countering that holmes knew every bit of what he was doing, planned this for a

long time, suggesting don't believe anything that the genius neuro scientist graduate student was doing. and the jurors also heard very emotional testimony at times from the survivors of the victims of this attack. the judge saying that he expects that the jurors will begin their deliberations midweek next week. >> let's talk to hln legal analyst joey jackson. how convincing do you think the defense had been to claim that holmes is insane? >> good morning. listen, the reality is whenever you have a doctor in a courtroom, it could be very compelling. doctors certainly have a level of education, a level of expertise and certainly can with very persuasive in terms of telling a jury what their

client, and that is the defense, what they want to hear. the defense has done its job in terms of laying out the issue for mental illness. they've had experts parade before the jury to suggest the man you see right there was insane. but there's a very big difference between mental illness and insanity as that is defined in colorado. clearly there was some mental issues there. i mean, that could have certainly went into what he was doing in terms of the psychosis that the experts are saying that he had. however, when you look at what the prosecutions expert said -- it's a battle of the experts here. in terms of the planning and preparation would be suggestive of what the prosecution's expert versus said. >> when we look at video of him in court, i have to think that the jury was watching him quite

definition. we in psychology look at whether there's psychosis, whether he's hearing voices or seeing things. he had all of those things. >> jeff, can you fake that? >> yeah, you can mall liinger t. you have to remember this was an individual who the psychiatrists on the defense side said he clearly had a psychosis even before the shootings. this is a person who had a long psychiatric history including taking anti-depressants. >> you never can tell. remember this, there are 12 jurors that are presiding there and seven alternates. it could be depending upon -- remember, jurors deliberate, which is their only opportunity

to collectively discuss the case. however, you do formulate opinions as a juror when you sit there. so it depends upon what the evidence has suggested to them. is it compelling for the issue of the prosecution. that is the planning the premedication and the 12 people that he killed and the 70 that he injured, some of whom would never walk again. they could be say hing he's guilty. you never know. we've been down this road before in terms of how jury deliberations will go and how long they will last. >> the important thing here they're saying is he planned this therefore he knew the difference between right and wrong even though he had a severe mental illness. but it doesn't meet the legal definition of insanity. >> and remember, the death penalty is at stake here. thank you, gentlemen. >> thank you.
