this morning, iowa's largest newspaper -- cnn's chief correspondent, dana bash is traveling with the trump campaign and has a lot to tell us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: that's always the case when talking about donald trump. so far, his campaign philosophy is his politically incorrect rhetoric taps into a part of the gop that the republican establishment doesn't understand and the media don't understand. so far, the polls seem to be backing him up. the question is how long is it going to last? in a brutal editorial, the des moines editor is demanding donald trump pull the plug on the side show calling him a feckless blow hard who can generate headlines and polling numbers, not by provoking

3:02 am
the same survey may signal trouble. 23% on three consecutive nights. on sunday after his controversial comments support dipped. mccain is going to take the high road. mccain's son jack a fourth generation didn't hold back about what he thinks. >> my father is a public figure open to attack. prisoners of war, in general, donald trump has to understand he's running to become the commander in chief of the military. if an individual becomes a prisoner of war, is he going to abandon them because he doesn't like people that are captured? >> reporter: he's going to have his first campaign event here in south carolina the first in the south, a primary state for republicans. it is going to be very interesting to see how he's received here chris. this state hosts eight military

bases. over the past two election cycles a quarter of the electorate consider themselves veterans or active duty military. chris? >> a big religious community down there. we haven't heard a lot of what he said in iowa about religion. dana thank you very much. there's no question trump is getting attention. we have news for you. someone who could be one of the strongest candidates entered the race this morning. ohio governor john kasich. big swing state. he has a lot of aspects of him that put him in the center of the gop. >> that's right. governor kasich is going to jump into the crowded field here. here he is on snap chat making the case for why he should be president. take a listen.
3:04 am
>> no one running for president helped balance the federal budget saved a state from bankruptcy or served on the defense committee for 18 years. maybe i ought to run. >> he's going to turn that media out to i am running. if you look at his credentials, this is interesting. if you look at his credentials, on paper, he looks like someone voters should give a close look. he served in congress 18 years, balanced a budget. he was on the arms committee, a commentator on fox news and serving second term as governor in the crucial state. he won 7 in 10 independents a quarter of black voters and a quarter of democrats. he could be the most qualified and least known candidate. the question for him is can he breakthrough in this jam packed field? he's pulling in the low single digits
3:05 am
digits we are talking 2% 3%. will voters give him a boost after his announcement? >> we have a lot of talk about. let's bring back dana bash and cnn politics reporter m.j. lee and patrick healy. patrick, donald trump is at 40%. is it time for the pundits and the media and gop establishment to take him seriously? >> i think so. he's someone with real traction it seems like in iowa and new hampshire. even more so he's going to be a big factor in the debates. going into that first debate he's going to be the person that jeb bush is preparing for, that some of the others are preparing for. the question is is he going to talk about policy? when we say take him seriously, i don't think it's so much he's putting through ideas of dealing with islamic state. he's not going away. he's a one-man show.
3:06 am
the challenge is you never know what he is going to say. it's about self-interest. it's not necessarily about going into a republican field and saying this is how we make the country better. it's how can i get my message out and talk about myself? >> dana and m.j. let's take a beat on the poll and see what we put together with cnn, a poll of polls. this index they will use to get and pick for the debates. that's key. let's take another look inside the abc poll. dana how he does after mccain gary put it out there, it was the smallest sample the fourth day, but it was so negative with those 200 it brought his number down. what does that mean? m.j. for you, what does it mean when you look at the head-to-head with hillary clinton? start with you, dana? >> you are right. that's why i mentioned it.
3:07 am
it is very telling, i think, that abc made a point of putting out exactly how they did their survey what days they did it and the fact it came down significantly on the last day. you made another important point, chris, they said it was a small sample. it's hard to tell. there was another poll not a national one, but in the state of iowa where he made the remarks that was taken over the same period of time. it included sunday the day after he said the things about mccain and it didn't change the way people felt. so it's a little too early to tell. one thing i want to tell is you said something very important that we haven't been talking about. the evangelical vote. here in south carolina two-thirds which is huge. two-thirds of republican primary voters call themselves evangelical. it's almost that close in iowa. over the weekend, that same
3:08 am
forum, he would not say whether or not, in fact he hasn't asked god for forgiveness. that is a huge red flag for a lot of evangelicals. that may matter to them more than the back and forth with mccain. >> it's fascinating he never asked forgiveness from god. it hardly got comments because people were so ruffled about what he said about a former vietnam veteran. when talking the general election the thing to remember about trump is he's always had a bit of a cap when it comes to the broader electorate. look at every poll that's come out about the 2016 candidates his cap is at 40%. 6 in 10 people said trump is not someone i'm interested in. for him, the success rate depends on whether or not he can max out the 30% or 40% of people that vote for him. we will see if his comments will
3:09 am
hurt him. if trump supporters are bothered by it or we like him and the fact he says whatever he wants. we are going to continue supporting him. >> let me spell out what he said in terms of religion and forgiveness. he was asked if he ever asks forgiveness from god. he said if i do something wrong, i try to do something right, i don't bring god into the picture. no way to know what that means for iowa. >> it's going to take a few days for comments to get reflected in polling. it always does. whether republican caucus goers are going to remember the comments and the des moines editorial, a lot don't care about what they say. >> what do they say? remind people? >> they said he should get out of the race. >> because? >> because he's not qualified to be president. he's making this into a side show. he's being, kind of the bafoon
3:10 am
lindsay graham is trying to get their numbers up. iowa would be won with 20% to 25% of the vote. trump has that already. he goes into iowa with a set of strengths. whether he's in the race in six months seven months whether he wants to be participating with the republicans who he doesn't seem to take seriously the jeb bushes the bobby jindals. itis an open question. i's about the attention coming on him, him being able to get off the tweet-like comments where he makes the hip shots. that's what he loves doing. >> dana let's talk about john kasich getting into the race. how do you think he moves the needle? >> you know i think he is perhaps a dark horse in this. you know for months and months and months people have been saying look at john kasich because of what some of what was
3:11 am
laid out. he is the full package on paper. he is a governor who has had success in ohio which, i have spent a lot of time in ohio. it has been depressing. the joblessness is bad and it's gotten better since he's been governor. he can claim victory on that. he has experience in washington as budget chair. he worked with bill clinton on balancing the budget which is huge if you are a republican or democrat. he has that. the question is whether or not, he can breakthrough this field. he has a little bit of trump in him in that he's kind of shoots from the hip. people might not know this on a national scale, but he kind of also likes to talk in sound bites. it wouldn't surprise me if he does better than people think. >> dana bash coining a new trumpism which i like a little trump in him.
3:12 am
there is an emerging theory there could be a trump snapback and someone like kasich could benefit from that. the zone of rationality of the gop, he looks better and better. do you see anything on that? >> absolutely. i think compared to trump, a lot of candidates in the republican field end up looking more presidential. i was speaking to former south carolina governor jim hunt yesterday, asking about the trump comments. his bottom line is people are not going to be -- issues related to military are what people vote on. the fact trump is saying these things and making these comments it has an effect in the field. it makes everyone else look more presidential and seem more like they could be commander in chief. someone like john kasich who is at the bottom of the polls could

using a sledgehammer. may 4, they got their big break when the prison turned off the heating system giving the prisoners a chance to cut through the steam pipe with a hacksaw. the convicted killers relished the plan even joking about it bragging it took them 20 years to break out, it would take them only 10. >> again, according to "the new york times," a source says david sweat's account is credible. it prompted an investigation into the prison practices and people. as a result we know a dozen employees are placed on leave and two employees facing criminal charges in connection with the escape. >> thank you very much. we have developments. details e emergencying about the chattanooga gunman that killed four last week.
3:16 am
the shooter told him isis wauz stupid group and completely against islam. this as investigators uncovered disdain for the u.s. government in writings by the gunman. we are live in chattanooga with the latest. what do you know? >> reporter: chris, good morning. this could be the first real hint that investigators have at a motive. they are scouring the papers. the writings done by abdulzeez years ago. he opposed the u.s. war on terror. now, this comes as his friend is speaking out to cnn telling him they did talk broadly about the conflicts in the middle east but here is how his friend characterizes what abdulzeez told him about what he thinks about isis. >> it was stupid and completely against islam. not to even think about going towards them.

>> reporter: we are starting to hear the first plans of funerals for those five lives lost. we know staff sergeant david wyatt will be laid to rest in chattanooga with full military honors. this is important because he was not from chattanooga. his family chose to bury him here because they love the community and the outpouring of support they have seen in the community since his death. >> thank you for that. the death of texas jail inmate sandra bland. it's being treated as a murder investigation. it's unclear if she took her own life or was murdered. the moment a jail guard found her body hanging in her jail cell. three days earlier, the 28-year-old was arrested and accused of assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop. police dashcam footage will be released later today.
