for senator mccain. >> he's not criticizing the war service, but came closer than before. >> i supported him and raised money for his campaign against president obama. certainly, if there was a misunderstanding, i would totally take that back. hopefully i said it correctly. >> reporter: even for the bombastic trump, who craves controversy, the bipartisan backlash from the weekend remarks about mccain's five years as a prisoner of war in vietnam is intense. >> he's not a war hero. he's a war hero that was captured. i like people that weren't captured. right now, he said bad things about a lot of people. >> reporter: the polls show trump isn't just leading the gop, but leading big at 24% with second place scott walker and third jeb bush trailing by double digits. the same survey may signal trouble for trump. 23% on three consecutive nights.
4:01 am
on sunday after the controversial comments support dipped. mccain is determined to take the high road. mccain's son, jack, a fourth generation naval officer, currently on active duty didn't hold back about what he thinks. >> my father is a public figure open to attack. prisoners of war, in general, trump has to understand he's running for to be the commander in chief of the united states military. if an individual gets rolled up becomes a prisoner of war, is he going to abandon them because he doesn't like people that are captured? >> reporter: today will be his first campaign event here in the first primary state of the south, south carolina. there are very important pockets of the republican electorate here. one is the military. we will see how his comments about john mccain plays or doesn't. another, alisyn are evangelicals. two-thirds of republican voters here tend to be evangelical and

being themss. this is a big job they are applying for. we want to find out, what makes them up? >> if someone says they are devout about religion and their belief in god, but does not believe in asking god's forgiveness, what does that say to you? >> well obviously, a tenant of our faith is we all need forgiveness. we are all equal at the foot of the cross. we are all fallen human beings. that is why god is god and we are not. we need a savior to get into heaven. it's by his grace we get there. forgiveness is a corner stone of who we are and, you know for us as christians we ask god forgiveness every day and multiple times per day. >> everybody is talking about what trump said about p.o.w.s. when he said do i do things that are wrong, i guess so. if i do something wrong, i try to do it right. i don't bring god into that

picture. if that's the answer do you accept him as a man of faith? >> well you know our other part of our faith is we are not to judge. so a lot of that is you know between mr. trump and god. now, for us again, we go back to the tenant of our faith. you know we are supposed to love the lord our god with our heart, soul, mind love our neighbor as ourselves. we do the best we can. we seek the kingdom and righteousness and those things get added to us. >> how did it play to the faithful there, the congregation when he said that. i go to church i drink my little wine and have my cracker, a reference to the communion wafer. and i guess that's a form of asking for forgiveness. how did that play? >> well first of all, you have a very forgiving audience. if you are asking for
4:07 am
forgiveness, you have a forgiving audience. they thought mr. trump was not ready for the question. he was probably surprised by the question so he probably didn't handle it the way he could have handled it and the way he should have handled it. i think they are willing to give him a pass on it. >> i thought this was about character, bob? that's what i don't get. if it's about character and he's saying these things about religion why does he get a pass? >> i'm not saying he gets the ultimate pass they are probably giving a pass they wasn't ready for the question. he'll be better next time he's asked the question. we all know we need forgiveness, we are not perfect individuals. the other question the one dominating the headlines, the comment about john mccain. i was stunned by his answer. i think frank was stunned by his answer and i think donald trump
4:08 am
was stunned by the comments he made. we do respect that. especially prisoners of war. %-pjohn mccain is a war ero. if i was advising him, i would say apologize and move forward. >> what about the comments he took in the hole about john mccain, p.o.w. about faith, wine and crackers? >> well you know it was a tough 20 minutes for donald trump. there's no doubt about it. the unfortunate part is you have nine other candidates on that stage who did a great job. you know they are getting no coverage what so ever right now. i think, for donald trump, i don't think he wants that comment to dominate the campaign. he is tapping into a sentiment that washington is broke, it needs leadership. it needs leadership from the outside. that's why his poll numbers are
4:09 am
doing well. he does not want the comment about mr. mccain to define his campaign. >> i would think you are more concerned about his faith and how he sees it. the last question, sir -- >> we are always concerned about a person and their faith but it is a journey and process and we are willing to walk it with him. >> the des moines register saying he should get out of the race he's a blow hard and feckless. he doesn't have the ability to accept things in a good way. do you accept that? >> the des moines register doesn't have the right to call him out of the race. that's a donald trump decision and american people decision. i will tell you this in an iowa caucus if the des moines register tells you to get out of the race that will bump him up more in the polls. >> the candidate who represents
4:10 am
your faith interests? >> we are looking for a bold and courageous leader. they happen to exist in this field. we want somebody who cast a profamily vision and is willing to get this country on the right track. there's a lot of game left to be played that's the coach in me. let the process play out. we will make our decision before the iowa caucus takes place. >> does the coach in you put trump at the head of this or second string or third string? >> well i probably won't get into that right now. he's definitely in the mix. he's somebody people are going to have to deal with. there are several good candidates in this race great alternatives to the leadership we have in the white house. i think america will be better for it when they select the right leader. >> bob, thank you very much. appreciate it. look forward to seeing you again on the show. >> thank you, chris. with the 60 day clock ticking on congress, the u.n.
