family disputes that. and more developments on the dash cam video of bland's arrest. many in the community remain outraged by what they see. and this morning we hear sandra bland herself in a phone message to a friend from jail. cnn's ed levendera to give us all the developments there in texas. >> reporter: good morning, alyson. the autopsy report also revealed that sandra bland had high amounts of marijuana in her system. but also showed indications that she had tried to harm herself. but despite all of this the question surrounding her death still continues to swirl. details about sandra's bland's condition were reviewed by local law enforcement. >> we have an initial report that she did have quantity of marijuana in her system. however, we are waiting to make any kind of formal determination of that. >> reporter: the waller county
3:01 am
district attorney says the preliminary autopsy shows scars on her arm. >> it appears to be cutting, scars on the arm where someone has been cut over time. some of those actually appeared to be fresher and that they were scabbed. >> reporter: on this police intake questionnaire bland notes a previous suicide attempt by way of pills after a mis miscarriage in 2014. but on the other page the answer of asking attempted suicide is no. leaving her family with continued doubts. >> i have a hard time dealing with inconsistency. and that seems to have happened over the last couple of days here. so i don't have a problem still asking questions. >> reporter: investigators are now analyzing dna evidence on the trash bag allegedly used in sandra bag's hanging. and they are also looking into
3:02 am
bland's arrest video. >> get out of the car! get out, now! >> reporter: attempting to clear up the anomalies where cars appear and reappear chalking it up to glitches in uploading. and for the first time we are hearing from sandra bland. a haunting message to her friend a day after the arrest. >> honestly i'm at a loss of words about this whole process. how did switching lanes with snow signal turn into all of this i don't even know. but i'm still here so i guess call me back when you can. >> reporter: the bland family ordered their own independent autopsy. those results are expected to have been back by now and it is not clear yet whether they will release any of those details from their own independent autopsy. >> ed lavandera, thank you for tracking that for us. a pastor at a boltmore church
3:03 am
recently spent time with sandra bland's family in texas. thank you very much for joining us this morning, reverend. the police findings about what happened in the cell. and then you have why any of this happened in the first place, which goes to the two competing issues that have the family's attention. we'll deal with the death, obviously, which they believe to be a homicide. they believe to be a murder. this is the first time we get to hear from sandra in this moment. we just heard part of it. there's more to the voice mail. we'll be instructed to give a flavor of where her heart and mind were in that cell. let's play all of that. >> hey, this is me. i just was able to see the judge. i don't really know -- they have me sitting at a $5,000 bond. i'm just at a loss of words honestly about this whole process. switching lanes with no signal turn this i don't even know. but i'm still here.
3:04 am
so i guess call me back when you can. >> from the family's perspective, this voice identifies a person who was where in their life right now? >> i don't hear anywhere in her voice or a sentiment that this is my last call. it's not a good-bye. it's saying call me back. i'm frustrated as anybody would be three days in jail for a turn signal when she's supposed to start a new job in 24 hours. so all of us would be perplexed how this is to happen and those three minutes that are missing from that video, how it got shorter, still raises the whole lot of questions. and chris, here's the real interesting issue. where would this be if it didn't get all of this national attention? it would have been swept under the rug. they seem to be in a familiar place of practicing inequity that none of us are able to digest. >> when questions are rised, they need to be asked and
3:05 am
answered and that's part of our job as well. you refer to the three minutes, there was video that had obvious up-cuts or upload error in them. police say that's what they were simple errors. they released the tape that does not have the errors but the tape does that less duration, about three minutes as you point out. there's a question in itself the different duration. >> that's a question. chris, when you get a chance pull up the mug shot of sandra bland. and i want to show you some critical things that causes us some pause. one, you'll note how in a mug shot do you already have on a prison uniform? it's in the middle of process. the other thing i want you to be aware of chris, is that the backdrop of the mug shot is the exact same backdrop of the floor of the cell. it is not the same as a wall. we have a contrast analysis of what a mug shot looks like and there's a cinder block. but when you look at her's,
3:06 am
you'll notice the exact same duplicate of what the floor of the cell looks like. >> which makes you think what? >> say it again? >> which makes you think what reverend? >> that it was taken laying down. and it brings us questionable causes as to when that mug shot was taken place. was it taken place during processing? or was it in fact taking place after. there's no shadow coming from above her head but it is something that raises some questions that are going to have to be answered about that police department. because we're seeing consistencies of inconsistency of how railroaded of injustice is taking place. >> the biggest question goes to how she died. police say we found marijuana in her system. somewhat immaterial to the idea of suicide. there were cuts on her, which could be a reference to some type of self-injury. and then of course the big
3:07 am
offer from the authorities, which is that she herself marked on a form that she had tried to kill herself in 2014 because she lost a child. and did so with pills. does the family accept that type of depiction? >> they vehemently reject it. and note chris, it is answered on two different ways. one is the one of the allegation of i attempted because of a lost pregnancy. then on the next page it says no. i don't know how you're able to fill that wedge. this police department needs a complete overhaul and makeover. and the justice department has to intubate because it is clear they are incompetent. >> what would have been the motive for a homicide in a situation like this? yes, it was a traffic stop that went well. yes, the officer was out of line. the police say they as they have taken him off the street.
3:08 am
to the family's thinking to your thinking, what is the motive for someone to kill? >> i think it's asked wrong, chris. what would be the motive of suicide? what would be the motive of suicide knowing that after a protracted season of up employment you're able to go back to your alma mater, you're finally able to get your life back on track. you called your friend and didn't say, this is it this is the end. this is call me back. this is not a swan song. we are not hearing the titanic, here's somebody optimistic about life and ready to move forward but frustrated with a broken system. >> reverend thank you very much. more questions and answers remain and we'll stay on this story. thank you for helping us understand the family's perspective. >> thank you. all right, donald trump is heading to the border. he's expected to tour the u.s./mexico border following the firestorm he set off with his comment about mexican immigrants. but there's a report that border
3:09 am
agents may no longer be involved in today's tour. dana bash has been tracking trump and digging out the latest for us. she's in laredo, texas, what are we learning now? >> reporter: good morning, makayla. we are trying to track down whether or not it is accurate donald trump will not be able to take the tour that he was supposed to take with the local border patrol union because the parent union allegedly said no we cannot do that. but in the meantime as far as we know all systems are go. he's heading down here later today. and the reason he picked where we are now, laredo is because it's one of the most active parts of the border between the united states and mexico. so that's why he picked this part. why he picked this issue to talk about is perhaps for anybody who covered politics a bit obvious because this is the issue that he believes and polling will back him up on this helped him
3:10 am
rise in the polls. because illegal immigration and fighting for doing more for the border and fighting illegal immigration was something that was a backing within the presidential field that he helped to fill with a pretty significant part of the republican electorate the base and voters in some of the early primary states. so he'll be talking about that. and he won't be talking about john mccain or lindsey graham or any of the other things that may have been a distraction to him. he didn't back down from but this is the issue that he clearly wants to get back to talking about. >> okay dana. we'll get more from you to see if this is really going to happen in a few minutes. thank you so much. donald trump is also speaking out in a new interview with anderson cooper. he weighs in on sandra bland's arrest and whether he thinks the officer went too far. >> sandra bland is an african-american woman pulled
3:11 am
over in texas. >> i saw that. >> i'm not asking you specifics because i can't be expected to look over everything but pulled over for not changing signals and the dash cam has been released. a lot of people are upset about that. to african-americans in this country, a lot of people believe they are treated differently by police. do you believe that there's a problem with that? >> i hope not. but i will tell you, i saw that clip on your show by the way, and i thought it was terrible. and i thought he was so aggressive. a traffic signal as i understand it and who gets out of a car for a traffic signal? i haven't been pulled over in a while, actually but seriously, he just was very aguessive. i didn't like his demeanor and thought it was terrible to be honest with you, and i'm a huge fan of the police. i think the police have to be given back power, but this guy was overly aggressive. terribly aggressive. >> do you think that happens to african-americans more than it does to you or i? >> i hope it doesn't but it
3:12 am
might. and, you know i have a great relationship with african-americans as you possibly have heard. i just have great respect for them. and they like me i like them. the answer is it possibly does it shouldn't, and it's very sad if the cases -- i watched this close so close and a few times, it was terrible. >> we're not going to get a lot of dispute from that in terms of people who watched the altercation. it was obviously that the officer didn't need to remove her from the car. >> that doesn't seem like a poll tested response. that's a visceral reaction. i don't know all the facts but that seems horrible. that's how people feel about it. >> and also when asked whether or not there's a pattern of discrimination he says no but he's good with the blacks and the blacks like him, too. you get the vote from the entire community at once which is nice. trump's strategy for dealing
3:13 am
with attacks is also on display here when it comes to rivals. and it seems to be give twice what you get. he got called a jackass by lindsey graham, so trump decides to take the high road. take a look. >> i get called all the horrible names by lindsey graham who i don't even know i didn't start it with lindsey graham. i couldn't care less about lindsey graham. he's registered at zero in the polls. by rick perry from texas up in my office a few years ago looking for support. he was up -- people are saying, i call it a hypocrite, but they are saying horrible things like i don't even know these people and they are saying these -- am i supposed to just say, oh it's okay for them to say, i guess it was lindsey graham who called me a jackass, so am i supposed to say that's okay. you have to fight back. the country has to fight back. everyone's pushing our country around. we can't allow that anderson.
3:14 am
>> is it presidential though? >> i think it is presidential. >> you gave out a personal phone number. >> that was a whole story. you have to see the way it morphed. where he wanted to get on "fox and friends" and called me up out of the blue. then he wanted to come in for campaign contributions. and then he started hitting me years later and i happened to have this crazy phone number and held it up and said this guy was over here and actually as you probably know, the room was packed it was standing room only. in fact they had the overflow crowd also with closed circuit television into other rooms. the place went wild and we all had a good time. >> but is that presidential? >> i think so. i think it was fine. >> somebody in congress you would give out their phone number? >> i was hit by somebody unfairly. i was called names. the somebody hitting me was a bad guy up in my office asking for money and asking to get him on television. >> and as the president of the united states you're going to
3:15 am
be hit by the whole country. >> that's true. i think that's different. right now i'm trying to make the country great again. politicians will never make this country great. >> as president you would change your tone. >> oh i think so. >> if you play in the world of politics and run for political office does that not make you polished? >> i don't know. i think he's not a pure politician. i think that he does see himself in that way, but i don't know that wanting to be president makes you a politician. >> i would say critics say his behavior makes him a politician. he's almost incapable of rising above anything that happens. and other than perceiving an established connection with "fox and friends," the interview is valuable. anderson cooper is gifting you with a chance to see what is behind trump's promises and criticisms. is he telling the truth that he says politicians will not? or is he setting the new standard for pandering? we'll play you the q&a, he gets pushed by anderson and then you

we have breaking political news now. "the hill" is reporting that donald trump is threatening a third party run for president. especially if he says the rnc does not support him, he will consider running in a third party. so what is it about donald trump striking such a core with voters leading him in the polls? we went to the historic palace theater in stanford connecticut, and sat down with a group of his supporters to find out what it is that is so inspiring about trump. shawn, what do you like about donald trump? >> well, i like that he gets results and isn't just talk. >> paula? >> i like that he's not a politician. i'm tired of politicians. i'm tired of sugar coating that they tell us they are going to fix this economy. i believe mr. trump really wants to make america great again.
3:50 am
>> susan? >> he says what he means. i honestly believe he's telling the truth. >> jerry, what do you like? >> our country is in terrible economic condition. and middle class americans have been decimated really over the last 30 years. donald trump has taken failed companies and businesses and turned them around to make a profit. and he has the complete ability to be able to do that. >> ryan what do you like? >> his immigration policy. i think immigration is the most important issue facing our country today. >> what do you think is donald trump's immigration policy? >> certainly to crack down on sanctuary cities. i don't think it would not have gotten the coverage it did without donald trump speaking about it. >> what did you think about donald trump saying the controversial comments about sending criminals and rapists. >> he didn't say mexican, he said mexico. and they are outmaneuvering us.
3:51 am
what other country in the world doesn't allow that immigration to come across the border? >> jeff what do you like about donald trump? >> the fact that he's a businessman and a developer. the fact that he's a straight shooter. the fact when he goes into the boardroom, he has to make something happen. >> so you call him a straight shooter. some people say he shoots from the hip. he just this week called senator lindsey graham an idiot. >> it's true. >> is it presidential? >> well, what is presidential anymore? i mean we have a president sitting in the white house right now. he's taken so many vacations that's costing the taxpayers dollars. what has he done for america? donald trump will take us above and that make america the way we once were. we'll be great again. >> we'll talk about where some people believe he's flip-flopped. he previously was in support of universal health care. today he says obama care is a total disaster. does that bother anybody? >> i think it's right.
3:52 am
>> he is. >> but obamacare is a disaster. there are a lot of doctors being pushed out of the market place because they cannot afford it. >> does it bother you he first was for universal health care? >> we all have the ability to change and adjust. certainly donald trump has that ability down to a science. >> so you see it as adaptability not flip-flop. >> that's right. >> i want to ask you about the comments donald trump made about john mccain and his p.o.w. status. some took offense and said when donald trump said i prefer people who don't get captured. that he issued a slight unintentionally offensive remark to all pows. how do you feel about those comments? >> i think he's taken that too far and he did say that mccain was a war hero. and he was a war hero yes, he said what he said but i think that the media and everyone is only playing that one clip.
3:53 am
>> jerry, you are a veteran. you are a marine. what did you think about the pow comment? >> i think his lack of respect for mccain is actually sitting more as a senator and as a veteran. as a marine, we like guys that don't get captured too. i don't think he meant that as an insult to pows or the military at all. >> don't forget mccain insulting the crazies. which was a blank insult of those going the trump route. >> exactly. and how do you know how many military people -- my husband is a vietnam vet. and after i told my husband what mr. trump said my husband said i love him. >> so you took more offense at john mccain calling the trump supporters crazies because there may have been some veterans. show of hands, how many people on election day plan to vote for donald trump? undecided? >> i'm undecided. you know i can see myself
3:54 am
voting for him and then if somebody else comes along to care about myish shoo uh issues and my positions, then i can see myself voting for them too. >> unlike ryan i want to see the policies and want to know what it is about. i want to see that it is fairness for people. i understand what trump is saying it's a little put on and for entertainment, it's a lot of show person in there. so i'm waiting to see what policies are going to look like and what he's going to say moving forward. >> we had hoped on this panel to have it be more ethnically and racially diverse. we tried very hard to reach out to african-americans and to hispanics, and though connecticut where we are is 14% hispanic we couldn't find anyone who wanted to come on and support donald trump. do you imagine hispanics coming around to support donald trump? >> trump is playing to america not playing to a minority of one group to another.
3:55 am
he's just saying it as he sees it. he's not saying i better speak this way because there are more hispanics in this crowd. >> everyone is tip-toeing around and he brought the conversation back. i think, again, he's brought it back and brought it back on himself to where americans can talk about -- republicans, if all these candidates are just pandering and hoping to get these hispanic votes, i think it doesn't do them or anyone in this country, i think it does them a disservice. >> what do you think of the theatrics in the race that trump has brought to the table. >> politics is theatrics. you have to tell people who you are. >> and really you like him or hate him or whether you agree or disagree with him, he puts on one hell of a show. >> that's what it comes down to for a lot of people right? show. >> for them they all had something else to like about donald trump, but the common denominator was they like his passion, and they believe that he will make america great again.
3:56 am
and that is what he is talking about. >> you also said something you were talking about before the show the notion of we're tired of the old way. and he's really grasping onto that thing that a lot of american voters are feeling. like that's not working, we'll try something else. >> he's certainly capturing whether he is the right messenger for it or not, as the one young man said with his policies i think that was well done. they are so angry that politicians and so angry at the lack of movement on big issues that trump is benefited from talk about what they are angry about. the irony is they are mad at politicians, saying what people want to hear but trump is doing that more than anybody else. he's telling people exactly what they want to hear. this stinks that stinks but we are really great. and that's what they want to hear. the question will be like the young man said how will he get it done? >> exactly. there are two undecided and
3:57 am
waiting for more specifics. you might hear some today. what is your take? tweet us using #cnnnewday. i would love to hear your feedback. we are following a lot of news this morning. let's get right to it. new details in the sandra bland death investigation. >> we have an initial report that she did have quantity of marijuana in her system. >> get out of the car! >> police released another version of the dash cam video of bland's arrest attempting to clear up the physical anomalies. >> i'm infather rateuated. there are polls in iowa saying i'm doing really well. >> the quinnipiac poll is showing voters -- >> you keep bringing up negative polling. i know i'm polling well in. to make the world viable of any alternative absolutely underscores that fact. >> we are going to do everything

possible to stop it. good morning, everybody. welcome back to "new day." "the hill" is considering that donald trump is considering a third party run if the rnc is not fair to him during the primary season. this threatens the gop's chances of winning the white house in 2016. >> this is as donald trump is expected to tour mexico today after divisive remarks were made about the mexican immigrants. dana bash is live from laredo texas. this is meaningful about the third party because polls show he takes a much bigger bite out of jeb bush as a considered gop favorite than he would out of hillary clinton as the democrat favorite in a three-way race. that's exactly right. for weeks republicans i have been talking to privately say they are very concerned about
3:59 am
the ross perot scenario which is exactly like you described, when ross perot ran in 1992 he took enough votes away from the republican president that the democrat bill clinton won. now donald trump said many times including to our own anderson cooper that he is not ruling out a third party run, but in this article he takes it a little further and is more specific saying that he won't rule it out. the republican national committee continues to be unfair to him. and you remember we reported that the rnc on monday or over the weekend put out a statement very harshly critical of donald trump. and it's no -- it's no rare thing for any neutral in a primary race to come out to criticize a candidate for comments. so that i think, these comments are on the heels of that statement from the republican national committee.
4:00 am
now, all of this is on the backdrop of where i am and where donald trump is going to come later today. it is the border between the united states and mexico of laredo being a place quite active. that's part of the reason he's coming here. another reason is because the head of the local border patrol union has been pretty active about asking politicians to come down and asked donald trump to do the same. there was a report earlier about whether the broader union would allow that to happen but donald trump's spokesman texted me a short while ago saying it is still on. alyson? >> i'll take it here dana. thank you for that report. right now trump is also opening up about his faith in his one-on-one with anderson cooper. he calls himself an honorable man of conviction that does not believe in asking for forgiveness. >> so forgiving, t
