statement from the republican national committee. now, all of this is on the backdrop of where i am and where donald trump is going to come later today. it is the border between the united states and mexico of laredo being a place quite active. that's part of the reason he's coming here. another reason is because the head of the local border patrol union has been pretty active about asking politicians to come down and asked donald trump to do the same. there was a report earlier about whether the broader union would allow that to happen but donald trump's spokesman texted me a short while ago saying it is still on. alyson? >> i'll take it here dana. thank you for that report. right now trump is also opening up about his faith in his one-on-one with anderson cooper. he calls himself an honorable man of conviction that does not believe in asking for forgiveness. >> so forgiving, that notion of

forgiveness, that's not a central thing for you. >> well, i try not to make mistakes where i have to ask for forgiveness. so when i ask a question like that it's like, i don't like to make a lot of mistakes. >> so i know it's a detail but the idea of repentance, is that something important to you? >> i think repenting terrific. >> but do you feel a need to? >> if i make a mistake, yeah i think it's great. but i try not to make mistakes. i mean what do i have to -- why do have to ask forforgiveness if i'm not making mistakes. >> you talk about the quukeucharist and talk about drinking wine and having my cracker. >> the room laughed. >> some say -- >> they didn't say that at all. when i left i saw people -- i got the biggest ovation of the weekend. i saw people. and i saw how a couple reporters made a big deal of that. we were having fun.

it's a quinnipiac poll. >> okay. it's not even a poll. joining us is a cnn political commentator and consultant margaret hoover. the headline of this mattering, what is going on with trump, he may run as a third party if the rnc -- whatever the basis is that could make a difference. we'll pop up the poll to show a three-way race between hillary clinton, jeb bush and donald trump. he takes a bigger bite out of bush. >> yeah look i'm an independent and a big fan of third-party candidacies and they can do a lot of good on a national level. the ross perot model the closest we have. history was rewritten a lot. he was part of a protest vote against the incumbents. but republicans should be concerned in the macro sense. we are a long way out of seeing this anything more than a

threat. >> here's the major difference between ross perot and donald trump. ross perot, besides the hair ross perot actually stood for something. he was running not just a protest vote but on balancing the budget and physical discipline. donald trump needs to be for something instead of against everyone in the republican field. by the way, immigration may be his issue, but it is not just let me build a wall i have $15 billion. he needs to stand for something serious. >> the the really important part to make ross perot was a third party candidate, he was pro choice donald trump is running as a conservative populist saying the republican establishment is not treating him with respect and he supports too far to the right. that's a different part of independent candidacy. >> i talked to the trump supporters yesterday and it's possible he doesn't need a policy to hang his hat on. what they say he represents and what they believe he's running on is making america great again.

they believe that he personifies the american success story and that he talks about wanting to make this country number one again. and that they are responding to. >> i hear that a lot. and i think in the context of the republican primary, that will get you some juice early on. but if you're really going to mobilize a massive group of millions of people for a national election as a third-party candidate, i think you're asking for a different set of support and a different kind of support. you need more serious policies. and you need something other than that. >> he's leading in polls right now. so let's do him the service of not just calling him a clown and taking him seriously. >> you have to take him seriously. >> we'll do some real talking. one of the founding fathers fears was a strong man could rise up in a democracy in times of instability and frustration and offer people strong and clear solutions. that's a bold fear. and that's the appear he's

making. true demagoguery. the fact that's the root of his appeal we should be taking that seriously. >> are you writing a book on george washington right now? oh you are. >> using that model, are you suggesting they have guards against them in the electoral college. that won't be possible for a third party to rise up in that way? >> well, our count citynstitution talks about the checks and balances in place. when we live in the fact-free zone throw a bunch of bombs and candidates who are serious like rick perry and lindsey graham are fighting to get into a debate. that's tragic. >> so you're upset about about what trump is doing that you say serious candidates like rick perry -- >> he's the three-term governor of texas. >> you don't think he disqualified himself last time? >> i don't. >> i'm not putting governor pataki and governor perry in the

same category. >> rick perry did more this go-around. he's shocked the heck out of me. he's had an important speech about racism. >> he talked about what donald trump may do to the republican party what happened to the wig party in 1854. >> these are national polls. we are way overplaying trump here. if you look at the early polls, yes, he's taking off right now but taking a lot of oxygen. guess what happens? you flame out. he's not leading in iowa or north carolina. or new hampshire. not in south carolina. >> he's exposed something your party is ignoring, a mood of discontent. it's a little bit rapeaping what you sow. you told everybody what is wrong with the administration and now they are angry. >> that's exactly why i said the republican party needs a sister moment. jeb bush all the guys on the top need to call out the extremism on the right. they need to stand up to him and call him out. by the way, jeb bush isn't going

to win those voters anyway. be a leader. >> jeb bush may have done it a little bit, but perry and lindsey graham have been doing it clearly and consistently in running. especially graham's campaign. and he deserves better than asterisks in the polls in the debates. >> donald trump's candidacy is a cancer on conservativism and it must be clearly diagnosed, excised and distorted. it is demagoguery, mean spirited and will lead the republican party to extradition. >> there needs to be a moment where you stand up to the demagoguery appeals. >> people like it. >> that's the point, radioi thought? the point is you have to stand

up when people are simply throwing red meat and distracting you. >> not you. >> people are always mad at me. my own family is mad at me. but people stand up and say, no don't stand up you're the oneer mad at. we're mad because of you. we heard it in alyson's panel. >> let's be honest it's not like nobody has been talking about immigration the last three years. marco rubio pushed a bill through the senate but it was on immigration. >> donald trump started the immigration national debate. do you not give him credit for that? >> well, everybody has been talking about it anyway. the reason he cut through is because of his celebrity factor right? it's not that nobody else is talking about it. it's that he has the elevated profile. people know who he is because of "the apprentice" and the other things. but that actually is on us. our culture and celebrity culture has cut through a political topic more effectively than politicians. that's a problem for us.

>> margaret and jon, great to see you. thank you so much. we have more of anderson's interview. he was pushing donald trump for ideas and anderson will join us to discuss the interview in the next hour. also we'll be joined by a congressman named henry cuellar. we'll ask him about the key notion of donald trump that it's mexico's government sending us their worst people. right now we have new details in the sandra bland death investigation. texas police say bland hanged theers herself in her jail cell. jail records show she tried to commit suicide before. we are following all the latest with ed lavandera from texas. ed? >> reporter: over the last few days the arrest has brought a lot of attention here but now things are shifting toward the autopsies and more information being revealed about them.

new details about sandra bland's condition were revealed by local law enforcement. >> we have an initial report that she did have quantity of marijuana in her system. however, we are waiting to make any kind of formal determination at that. >> reporter: the waller county district attorney says the preliminary autopsy report shows scars on her arm. >> it appears the medical examiner appears to be cutting scars on the arm that looks like where someone has been cut over time. some of those actually appeared to be fresher and that they were scabbed. >> reporter: on this police up take questionnaire, bland notes a previous suicide attempt by way of pills after a miscarriage in 2014. but on another page the answer to the question of attempted suicide is no. conflicting information leaving her family with continued doubts. >> i have a hard time dealing with inconsistency and that seems to have been the theme

over the last couple of days here. so i don't have a problem still asking questions. >> reporter: investigators are now analyzing dna evidence on the trash bag allegedly used in sandra bland's hanging. and on wednesday police released another version of the dash cam video of bland's arrest but this one three minutes shorter than the original. >> get out of the car! i will light you up get out. now! >> reporter: attempting to clear up the visible anomalies where cars disappear and reappear chalking up the glitches to an error in uploading. and for the first time we are hearing from sandra bland in police custody. a haunting message to a friend the day after her arrest. >> i am at a loss of words honestly about this whole process. how the switching lanes without a signal turns into all of this i don't know. but i'm still here so i guess call me back when you can.

>> reporter: we have scene results from the preliminary autopsy and we know the bland family ordered their own independent autopsy but we are still waiting to hear the results from that. >> it will be interesting to get the results when you do ed. thank you so much. president obama you remember made it a top priority to close guantanamo bay shortly after taking office. here's what he said in 2009. >> guantanamo will be closed no later than one year from now. >> okay fast forward to today and gitmo, the place that the president calls an improvement tool for terrorists is still open. cnn's athena jones is live at the white house with the latest. what are they saying athena? >> reporter: the prison is open despite being one of the first promises the president made when he got to the white house back in 2009. he's faced a lot of obstacles to keeping that promise. now he's trying to get it done. take a listen to the press secretary josh earnest. >> the administration is in the final stages of dratting a plan

safely and responsibly and to present that plan to congress to close guantanamo bay. he believes it's in our best interest to close the prison at guantanamo bay. >> reporter: congress has presented the biggest obstacles, like the ban on bringing the detainees from gitmo to the united states. this remains a big problem for the white house dealing with the 122 detainees still at guantanamo bay. the white house says it is not just a threat to us but also costing a lot of money. and dylann roof is accused of killing nine members in charleston last month.

and the charges are in addition to the state department charges. the justice department has not decided if they will seek the death penalty. frightening moments aboard a royal caribbean cruise ship. a fire broke out in a mechanical area of the boat. one crew member suffered first-degree burns. you can see the thick black smoke apparently that could be scene billowing from the freedom of the seas pulling into port in jamaica. passengers had on life vests and had to head to drill stations. the fire was put out by the ship's suppression system. not quite the vacation in paradise people were planning on. >> sometimes the crewsuises turn out not to be so much fun. >> they can be amazing, it's like a floating hotel, but when things go wrong, you're stuck on a boat. >> that's right. the mystery surrounding sandra bland's death grows this morning. a jail form indicates she mentioned a previous suicide attempt. but her family did not buy that.

there is new information from the case of sandra bland. her family says she was never diagnosed with being depressed. here is a texas judge here with

us this morning, judge duhan, i understand psychological testing has been done. what can you tell us? >> well, makayla, thank you for having me this morning. i can tell you we will be releasing the results of that autopsy either today or tomorrow. i can tell you that the autopsy report is going to show several things. one, it is going to show that she had very high levels of marijuana in her system. it's also going to show that other than some bruising on her wrist, presumably from the handcuffs and bruces on her forearm, there was no significant trauma to her body other than the ligature marks on her neck to indicate any kind of a struggle or otherwise. >> why is the marijuana in her system considered paramount or material to the case? it doesn't point to why she ended up dead in her cell does it? >> well, i think any information which goes to her mental or

physical state from the time of the arrest to the time of her incarceration is vital to the investigation. >> i want to look at the forms that were released and i think we can show them on the screen. one form indicates she attempted suicide in the past. and there's handwriting, we can't ascertain this is her's or whoever did the form but the intake says she tried to commit suicide in 2014 due to a miscarriage. she used pills to do so but there's discrepancy because on another page of the form there's a typed answer saying no to the question of attempted suicide. we don't know why that discrepancy. at the very least, sir, should she not have been under some sort of suicide watch in that cell? >> well, makayla, what happens is when they come into intake first you have a jailer who typically sits down with the inmate and he goes through the checklist and writes down the answers that the individual is

giving him. in this case they also i believe, brought her back three hours later and had her sit down in which they went through the questions again and interviewed them directly into the computer. so the answer in the inconsistencies you're seeing are the answers she gave the individuals at that time. >> okay. what about the point of being under some sort of suicide watch? >> well, at the time if you also notice on the forms when they asked her the questions of whether or not she had any suicidal thoughts or thinking of committing suicide at this time she answered no. based on her demeanor in talking to the jailers, they didn't see anything indicated to them she was having any tendencies to that effect. >> you can understand my pushback on that. 2014 was just last year. if someone had attempted suicide after having a miscarriage, one would want to take extra precautions with that person no? >> well, there's no doubt you have to be very careful. and we have a lot of inmates

here and you have to evaluate all of them. our jailers are not medical professionals. they evaluate them to the best of their ability. and when somebody's in we make sure like i said she was making phone calls while she was in jail. they even brought her out and let her make free phone calls from the desk. and they had no indications like anyone else said in this case there was no indication she was inclined to do something like this. >> until the very end, you can understand sir, why the family and so many others are wanting questions answered. because there have been discrepancies on the form there have been discrepancies on the surveillance video. there are unexplained time gaps from the prison we are not talking about the original arrest video. this was a young woman in the prime of her life on her way to a job interview that did not signal. yet three days later she ends up dead. in her voice mail she may sound tired, but to many people she doesn't sound like someone on the bring of ending her life.

what is your response to all of that? >> well, and obviously, i mean to anyone looking at the situation saying that she didn't appear to be anyone who was on the brink of injuring her life i think that would also have been a situation that appeared to the jailers. and i would like to make sure this is clear, too, in terms of her arrest that was done by a state trooper with the department of public safety. i'm county judge for waller county. the first time we had interaction with sandra bland was when she was brought here to the county jail. we always make every effort to accommodate. we put her in a cell. she had every indication that she was making phone calls and trying to obtain the bond to get out after it was set on saturday. why that didn't happen i'm not the one to answer that question. and i understand perfectly well why there are questions. i met with the family two days ago and understand they have questions that they want answers. and it is our intention to make

welcome back to "new day." there's so much to talk about in the world of politics. let's go to john king with "inside politics." have at it john. so much of it circling around the canada zididacy of donald trump. looking to the border in a minute donald trump was interviewed by anderson cooper yesterday. i want to hear your take on

this. he offended mexican immigrants and john mccain, is that presidential? or if you were to win, hold on to that possibility, if you were to win, would you change your tone? >> as president of the united states you're going to be hit by half the country out there. >> it's true. it's true. no i think it's a little bit different. right now i'm trying to do something to make the country great again. politicians will never make this country great again. >> as president you would change your tone? >> i think so. i think i feel very different. >> so two theories here. is that to be believed or is he just saying yeah to get through the interview, i'll change my tone to be differently. or after the bill o'reilly interview, he did say, okay, i take it back maybe. is he learning to adapt as a politician? >> no absolutely not. >> okay thank you. >> that is not even remotely close to an apology, right? and he's just -- seems to be

careening his way from one gaffe to another as we go along. and it's amazing because we haven't yet seen in the polls what the actual effect of his remarks will be. we haven't had a way to measure that about the john mccain thing this weekend or you know really the illegal immigration remarks. >> how many men have been told by a woman when they get married, i'm going to change my tone. he's not going to change. >> a big piece of his appeal is this tough tone on immigration to many offensive tones on immigration saying some of them are good people but mexico is sending us the murderers and the rapists. it's a traditional stop now if you're running for a bigs of tugbig office. how important is tone there, especially when we are two weeks

from today waiting for the first presidential debate. and donald trump is guaranteed a spot there. >> absolutely. what will be interesting to see on the border today is what is his message when he's there? can we actually fact-check that message? does he say thing that is are actually true? about the problems at the border -- it's interesting because he's going to be shepherded around by a group that obviously has an agenda. and we'll have to see whether or not he can actually resonate with voters down there and clean up his remark, which have outraged many people. >> outraged many people but also got support of gary langer the abc washington post pollster former ap guy, a smart guy, said the native part of the republican party. there were some republicans who don't want more immigration and think immigration period is bad. and donald trump has those people on his side. listen to rick perry, that was

rick perry stating, the three-term governor of texas, he's proven he knows how to handle the border. listen to what he says about donald trump. >> let no one be mistaken donald trump's candidacy is a cancer on conservativism and it must be clearly diagnosed, excited and discarded. i will not go quiet. when this cancer on conservativism moves into a movement of mean spirited politics to send the republican party to the same place it sent the wig party in 1854 the graveyard. >> how much of this do we take as rick perry from the heart? and how much, forgive me do we take the rick perrys on the bubble that may not take the first fox debate. >> it's rick perry on the

bubble it's rick perry from the heart, it's rick we areperry being exactly right. but this is not about donald trump. we are asking the wrong question of how this affects the republican party. what he is is a clear reflection of the supermajority of the country's discuss justified, anger, disgust and disconnect with the american political system. that disgust -- >> he says i'll break everything which has appeal because nothing is getting done. >> that didsgust is going to far outweigh donald trump. in a huge age of connectivity a man like donald trump is using this to his disconnect to do some amazing disruptively positive things to the country and majorly destructive things to the country. >> that was rick perry at his best. we did not see that rick perry

back in 2012. >> another person reacting to donald trump, i want your take on this one because this one is putting too many eggs in the same basket. here's marco rubio taking on donald trump. rubio is likely the debate as well. all of this the here. >> i don't think the way he's behaved over the next few weeks is worthy of the office he seeks. we have a president now that has no class. and we have a president now that does selfie stick videos that invites youtube stars there and people that eat cereal out of a bathtub that accuses his -- you just saw the interview where he goes on comedy shows to talk about something as serious as iran. the list goes on and on. >> he's trying to play exactly to what we're talking about. but he's doubling down. you don't call the president of the united states classless. you don't call him classless for things that raub rubio will do when he becomes president.

the selfie stick is to reach the media the way they are doing it. >> i will say that rubio was late to the game in terms of conducting trump. it took him a long time to figure out exactly what he wanted to say. and to you know he's got a very tricky position on immigration. and, you know he's figuring out his message and perhaps doubling down too much. i'm not sure that that will actually work for him. >> if you want to say i criticize the president's media strategy that's one thing. i understand he's trying to stick donald trump to barack obama, which somehow appeals to conservatives but seems to be beyond cynical. you started a new series this week based this week in los angeles #maevewest. you mentioned the great piñatas which i love there. >> trump piñatas yeah.

i don't know what people do with those, but there are a lot of people buying them for $150 a pop. >> so trump is good for the economy. >> that's right. >> i know what john mccain and grandma are doing right now. >> let's get back to you in new york. another poll we are not going to spend a lot of time on today, but a lot of the polls asked hillary clinton what if she had competition. if she would beat bill clinton, she would beat him and mrs. obama. we said bernie sanders has good numbers but she even beat oprah. there you go. >> that's all huff and puff. i think that much like you were just discussing about what trump means to the gop in that they can dismiss the man but not the mood he's tapped into bernie sanders has tapped into a mood too. he's not getting the crowds by mistake. he's offering something that the party is also hungry for. >> authenticity.

to be here. >> you couldn't come at a more important time. what is the state of play as you sense it from your briefings and talking to the brothers and sisters down there in d.c. as this begins? >> well, i had to briefings yesterday. i've been living and breathing this for the last ten days. and first i went over the classified intelligence briefing which is part of this process, and then had a classified briefing with john kerry, ernie monise and jack lie lew. i'm in homework mode. i'm disappointed about the way this has broken down to partisan lines. a lot of the guys came out against this deal within an hour of it being announced. they had not read it and didn't know what was in it. if they were in a jury pool to decide this case they would have been disqualified. the term is preemptory

challenge. and this is important for any votes casted here. >> we'll go to john boehner to see what he has to say on the deal. >> do you think he's written a deal? >> i'm not going to speculate that but you should ask him that the next time you talk to him. ask him questions about it. i'm focusing on the deal itself but my inquiry is starting to shift a bit, chris, to what are the alternatives? you can pick apart a 100-page document. and i think it's pretty solid. but the real question before us is okay if we vote it down what happens next? and that's the question these guys that are expressing this adamant opposition have to answer. you have the rest of the world essentially saying it is a good deal. they are ready to sign on to it. >> the u.n. security council

voted right away that upset members of congress. i don't quite understand that. the u.n. clearly has its own curfew in this own situation. but let me ask you this a big point of alternative is being offered by your brothers and cyster sisters down there on the right side. but some of these sanctions got them to the table. that's the key. we just did this too soon. do people understand there was very little foreign support at the table of negotiations for keeping sanctions on? >> well, i think you make a point, chris. the point is the sanctions were effective, not only because of us but because of the cooperation of people like china and russia and great britain and germany and france and the rest of the world. if they think this is a good deal and we're the outliar, is there any reasonable expectation that they are going to jump back into the sanctions regime? the expectation is they aren't. and that's one of the things we need to know and that's what i'm going to be asking the

intelligence community and the political community. this is characterized as a deal between the obama and the iatola and american and iran. it's really a multi-national deal. we're not the only player at the table. so again, the question comes back if the sanctions aren't going to be effective, then where are we? the reality is iran is a nuclear threshhold state. they are within two or three months of a bomb if they choose to go there. this arrangement, the temporary arrangement and now the deal that's been signed locks them out of that for something like 15 years. but they say there could be a nuclear threshhold in 15 years. well they are one now and this would move them backwards. so i'm not fully committed to the deal and still have questions and consulting with outside experts. but people around here aught to take a big breath and get a few of the facts before they start coming out so adamantly on this. i don't know how they can do

that. >> criticize versus scrutinize always a delicate balance in d.c. another divisive issue, what can out about planned parenthood or did not? what is your take on the video that came out? and does it substantiate that report that planned parenthood is selling baby parts for profit? >> i haven't seen the cuts and how it was edited and those kind of things. but my understanding is it was edited and created an impression not necessarily accurate. i don't think there's any evidence substantial of that allegation. planned parenthood has been around for a long time and provide all kinds of prenatal and health care screaming for women. and i think that this attack is unwarranted. >> the video did make planned parenthood itself say that the officials were showing a wrong type of behavior.

is it the target of scrutiny? >> i think it should be the target of skrupcrutiny. i'm all in favor of scrutiny as we just talked about with the iran deal. we need to look into these things to understand them to understand what happened. but i'm not prepared to jump and say, okay this 70-year-old, 80-year-old organization is -- should be done away with because of this alleged video, which i think is somewhat ambiguous. >> and it is hard to find a group associated with the alleged video that has not very much been against planned parenthood already. last question for you, senator king for now, you are an independent, and therefore you must be umbillically tied to
