>> we begin this hour with another donald trump controversy. he's once again distancing himself from some controversial comments. >> accept this time they aren't comments made by the billionaire front runner but a close adviser to his campaign. here's our jeff zeleny with more. >> reporter: donald trump's presidential campaign weathered one storm after another. >> they are bringing drugs. they are bringing crime. they are rapists. >> reporter: but a new controversy over offensive language is hitting closer to home. >> who's doing the raping? >> reporter: tonight, as he keeps riding high in the polls, his team is trying to clean up another set of comments. this time it has nothing to do with illegal immigration but trump's own marriage. his long-time counsel and spokesman michael cohen is under fire for telling "the daily beast," you can not rape your spouse. those five words set off a

firestorm. >> stunning response to decades old allegation against donald trump. >> donald trump's campaign is issuing a strong response this morning. >> reporter: cohen made the comment while trying to keep "the daily beast" from reprising a 1989 allegation made by trump's first wife ivana. in their divorce proceedings she allegedly said that trump once forced her to have sex against her will. a statement she later recanted. today cohen backtracked saying in my moment of shock and anger i made an inarticulate comment which i do not believe and apologize for entirely. marital rape is against the law in all 50 states. the trump campaign famously unapologetic quickly distanced itself from cohen who's been one of the most prominent faces of trump's candidacy. trump's campaign manager told cnn, michael cohen is a corporate employee and is not affiliated with the campaign in any way. in the middle of it all ivana trump issued a statement saying their divorce was a time of very

high tension but she added have nothing but fond p fondness for dial and wish him the best of luck on his campaign. >> mr. donald trump. >> this with a week to go before the first republican presidential debate as trump's standing soars. tonight a new poll of new hampshire voters shows trump is on top of all gop candidates - with twice the support of his nearest rival jeb bush. >> he is doing well because he's speaking his mind because he's a breath of fresh air. he's not like all the other politicians who have focus groups and who tell them what to say and how to say it and exactly what words to use. >> reporter: jeff zeleny cnn, new hampshire. cnn spoke to donald trump on tuesday evening to ask about his adviser's comments. trump admitted while he disagreed with michael cohen's comments regarding marriage and rape he's not going to fire or get rid of him and he said that cohen speaks for himself. mr. trump was with also asked about the upcoming

presidential debate. listen. >> now this debate is coming up. are you ready for it? >> i have absolutely no idea how to answer that question. i am me. i don't have pollsters. i have a lot of money, much more money than all of them put together and all of that of their phony contributions put together but you have to understand i want to be me. they pay pollsters millions and millions of dollars, don. you know that better than anyone and they won't answer your question . you see with jeb bush, with the simple that was asked about iraq. it took five days to get the answer out. i think jeb is probably a nice person. i don't know jeb but i think she probably a nice person. but you can't rely on pollsters every time there is a question. same thing with hillary clinton. i mean, she doesn't want to answer any questions. she doesn't deal with the press. everything is done by pollsters. and you know my expression is if the pollsters were any good why aren't they running for office? >> donald you will be on the

following. jonathon pollard, a convicted spy for israel will be soon free after spending nearly 30 years in a u.s. prison. he was a former u.s. navy intelligence analyst sentenced to life behind bars for giving top secret u.s. government information to israel. >> israeli prime minister netanyahu said he is pleased with the u.s. decision and went on to say, quote throughout thiz time in prison i consistently raised the issue of his release in my meetings and conversations with the leadership of successive administrations and we are looking forward to his release. despite his happiness over pollard's release, israeli's prime minister is strongly opposed to the iran nuclear deal. >> the sentiment is shared by many americans. secretary of state john kerry went to capitol hill trying to convince congress they should approve the deal. >> iran's supreme leader sends a chilling message to barack obama. this image portrays the

should be approved. in africa president obama blamed "fast and loose attacks from republican presidential contenders like mike huckabee who evoked the holocaust." >> he is so naive he would trust the iranians and take the israelis and basically march them to the door of the oven. >> the particular comments of mr. huckabee are i think part of just a general pattern that we have seen that would be considered ridiculous if it weren't so sad. >> reporter: while the harshest push back to the deal is coming from republicans, the president is struggling to keep his own party on board to override a veto. even the chairwoman of the democratic party is at best noncommittal. >> there is a lot of merit to the deal but a legitimate cause for concern. i think this is a decision no member of congress should make lightly. >> reporter: the white house did

pick up an important democratic endorsement. congressman sandy leaven the longest-serving jewish member of congress has come out in support of the deal. but senator chuck schumer on tap to become the next senate majority leader remains undecide. despite mounting pressure from the president to support it. cnn, waupg. washington. another big story making headlines in the united states. the national football league upheld a four-game suspension for tom brady in his role in the deflategate scandal. the commissioner said he tried to hide the evidence destroying his cell phone. investigators say the phone may have held incriminating text messages. >> a lot of patriot fans upset about this. the controversy started when the patriots were accused of under inflating game balls to get an edge in january's afc championship game. >> it seems the bottom line is the cover up is worse than the crime. if brady had come clean right

away chances are he may have received a stern talking to and nothing more than a slap on the wrist. now his legacy and relationshipation are tarnished. rachel when brady destroyed the cell phone, did he destroy his credibility at the same time? >> first, i have to make it clear, tom brady had an assistant destroy his cell phone. i don't know what's going on in the tom brady, giselle entourage. maybe they have cell phone destructor as a position open to them. he claims this is something that is usually done by someone who works for him. that he will switch cell phones and regularly have the cell phone and sim card destroyed for priefs sif reasons. clerly as much as i am joking around they have a public life. there are people who probably go through their trash wanting to get tidbits on them. it is not so out of the really that this is something he may do or have someone do for him.

what is suspicious and got to nfl investigators is that he did it on the day the nfl investigation came to him to meet with him. that's suspicious especially since he was aware before that day they would want his electronic records. also in addition i just got to jump in and tell you that a cell phone previous to this four-month period that is really in question has surfaced. so the nfl is saying wait if that phone wasn't destroyed why was the important cell phone destroyed? a lot of question marks here. >> didn't he have three cell phones and only one was destroyed and the one that was destroyed was the one with the 10,000 text messages on it that were pertinent to the investigation. >> no one can say how many cell phones tom brady has or hasn't had. but the one that was destroyed is the one they wanted to see and at least one other one they found that was not destroyed. >> sleelly, brady can argue he was under no obligation to turn the phone over.

>> absolutely. >> will that be the basis of a federal appeal. >> they will not appeal on any of this stuff, not on the merits of did he or didn't he deflate the footballs. they won't talk about the cell phone. the appeal process will be on the procedure. that's the only thing you can appeal to an outside federal court. they will make the claim of hey, roger goodell and his office made the initial punishment for tom brady. then and then roger goodell was the appeals hearing officer on his own punishment and a witness in the case. so roger goodell, the judge was overseeing a roger goodell decision while roger goodell was with witness in front of roger goodell the judge. the collective bargaining agreement allowed for that procedure but they will say to a court, hey, laws of the shop which is a labor law in the country that he should not have been allowed to do that. at some point it is too ridiculous. >> it is especially sad that

brady has been done in on what seems to be a really old, dumb rule which is ignored by almost every quarterback? >> my personal opinion is if you cheat you cheat. all rules are there for a reason and you can't have players decide which are or are not important to follow. that being said this is minor. if it wasn't cheating it is in the smallest way. not something influencing the outcome of games and you wish that tom brady and the naval could have stopped the train earlier. there are so many ways they could have downgraded this conflict. instead at every turn more lawyers, more appeals, more arguing and we find ourselves with the most powerful man in american sports, roger goodell, facing off against tom brady, the winningest quarterback of the century in a sport that americans hold the most dear. they are on opposite sides of what has really become tawdry. >> thank you for your insights. we appreciate it.

>> thank you. certainly having that cell phone destroyed -- it is a cover up like richard nixon, bill clinton, a-rod. always a cover up. a four-game suspension is a big deal. they only play 16 games in the season. that's why it is a stiff penalty nmplgts texas authorities released hours of video in an effort to quell rumors that sandra bland was dead before she was brought to jail. they say the woman wearing the orange jump suit in the video is sandra sgland she was found dead in her jail cell three days after arrested for a traffic citation on july 10th. officials say she hanged herself with a plastic bag. her family and others have questioned that account. rumors quickly sprefd on social media that bland was in fact dead when this mug shot was taken. officials say rumors are not true. the new york prison worker who helped two inmates escape is

facing prison time herself. joyce mitchell tearfully pleaded guilty. see her wiping her face on tuesday. she pleaded guilty to promoting prison contra brand and facilitating the escape. charges that could bring up to seven years behind bars. >> while police searched the for the two men in june mitchell talked a how she delivered tools to help them break out. she talked about the plot to kill her husband and how she had a sexual relationship with one of the prisoners. meantime an american dentist is sought in the death of a prize lion in zimbabwe. walt wither palmer said he hired professional guides and thought it was legal. >> zimbabwe officials say the 13-year-old lion named cecil was killed illegally wchl with ve more on the death and renewed calls to change hunting regulations. >> cecil is one of africa's best known lions. a major tourist draw for

zimbabwe. police say he was lured out this national park and killed by an american hunter. alleging it is this man, dr. walter palmer an avid trophy hunter in his 50s and a dentist from minnesota. in a statement, palmer admits to killing cecil, but he says he didn't know the lion's significance and relied on the expertise of local guides. cecil's killing has sparked outrage on social media and renewed calls to ban trophy hunting. >> this is a very large male. >> reporter: conservationists have been calling for a ban for years. >> just because you want a picture or skin on your wall. to me it is a form of sickness. >> does it make you angry? >> extremely angry. >> reporter: she runs a sanctuary in south africa that rescued scores of big cats. many of them were bred just to

be hunted. when he was just a few weeks old, he was taken away from his mother. he was bred to be killed and trophy hunters for a gorgeous mane like that will pay tens of thousands of dollars hunting groups say that money can be funneled back in to conservation. but lion numbers are plummeted up to 90% in africa. >> wow. should trophy hunting be a crime? >> this is murder. it is cold blood killing of creature that can defend. if she can defend we are equal. >> and other conservationists want the killing of cecil to spark change. david mckenzie, cnn, south africa. we will have more on the story later this hour. we will speak with an animal activist that believes the whole system of selling licenses to

trip was legal and properly handled. >> walter palmer the dentist from minnesota defends his actions and there has been a roar of outrage over the lion's death around the world. >> if you are going to do something like that go out in the wild where the animal has a chance to get revenge against you. >> it is stupid that people could take a life like that. whether it is human or not. >> reporter: >> the international fund for animal welfare is joining us from washington. for most people it would seem -- hunting and killing an endangered animal is a way to protect an endangers species. >> the majority of american people around the world don't want to see imperilled species killed for sport. it is counterintutive and doesn't make sense, economic biological sense or ethical sense. >> is this temperature of legal trophy hunting open to

corruption any way? there is no guarantee the huge license fees paid by palmer the dentist from minnesota that the money even winds up where it is meant to go. >> there are many questions about that. even if some of the money goes where it is supposed to go is it meaningful amounts? studies have shown with lavish hunts, 3 to 5% of the income from the hunt ends up for local people on the ground where the hunt happens and there are better ways to earn this money. revenue from nature tourism, where the animal is not killed brings in three to 15 times what is brought in from these trophy hunts in africa. >> it has been banned in some countries in africa still legal in others. what will it take for something like this to be essentially outlawed everywhere? >> think i first of all, this the outcry shows what people believe. the more these issues are looked at and the more people talk about what is going on it is hopefully going to be something of the past. one of the problems with the

legality of it is sometimes law takes a while to catch up with science. in 2011 there was a petition based on the best available trade and science data trying to get the species protected. i it's been three years and the u.s. government is still looking at the petition to decide fit warrants protection. in the meantime the species has declined. we know african lions are in trouble. they have declined 60% in the last three decades. that's a very steep decline. and other spe she's imperilled like elephants and rhinos and species in trouble like leopards and giraffe are hunted for trophies as well. >> the dentist from manhattan, who carried out this hunt his defense is he thought it was legal, relying on the guides. he doesn't think he has done anything wrong here. even so it seems incredibly cruel the way the lion was killed. shot with a cross bow, left

staggered wounded for 40 hours and finally gunned down. >> because it is legal does not make it right. if the reports are true this was a horrible way for this iconic animal to die 0 over 0 a long period of time hunted and killed. this should never happen to any an ma. >> now that cecil is dead, what happens to his pride? >> that's a great question. with lions they have a complex social structure. studies have shown when the dominant male is taken out it has a ripple effect. other lion life could be lost because the pride has become destabilize. coalitions of stray males will try to take it over. when that happens it that can battle with some adult males left in the ride and males could be killed on either side. if they are successful they could wipe out all of the young and females could die defending the young. it is a rip areal effect. not just one lion that could be killed. it could be many. >> we should note trophy hunts

happen all the time. thank you for speaking with us jeff. >> thank you very much. meantime in the united states another hunt for a big cat is taking place in milwaukee. we're not sure it may be a lion or a cougar. nobody knows for sure. whatever it is on the loose and making a lot of people in this area very, very nervous. >> the animal was first spotted july 20th prowling through someone's private house. authorities have been looking for it for a few days now. the milwaukee zoo has not reported any missing cats. so officials think it maybe an exotic pet that escaped, maybe walter palmer from minnesota the dentist could be in the area hunting it. who knows. >> a quick break. when we come back we have seen killer robots in sci-fi movies for decades. still ahead hear why scientists like stee nen hawking are warning against artificial intelligence on the battlefield.

nnchs central canada they had to take cover from violent storms. massive tornado ripped across farmland and prairies on monday for an incredibly long three hours. >> you can hear people scream sgrg that is ivan. >> i would be screaming. >> sheer terror. >> the people screaming are the chasers out there. they do this for a living. sheer excitement. >> you get close to something like that that is a wedge tornado. they don't get much more powerful than that. >> it ripped the as fault off the road. >> how about that. we have the fujita scale a damage scale. they go out and survey the damage and by the kind of damage the tornado made is how to determine what the speeds were. this skirted farmland so i don't think we will get the true force of what this was which was probably between an ef-3 and 5. >> dodged a big bullet.

>> open fields is where you want a wedge tornado. that's where we were here across southwestern manitoba. if it hit winnipeg it would be a different story. look at the storm system here. dynamic here. on the backside of it we have snow. snowing big sky, montana if you can believe that in the peaks. 10,000 feet up. that's impressive this time of the year. we are in august after all. fly in here closer. there's manitoba canada and there's the tornado touchdown extreme southwestern manitoba the cell that moved up. a clear rotation there on the radar perspective and you can see that is indicative of a tornado signature there and so certainly thankfully no one hurt with this tornado. we continue to see this low moving to the north and east. on the eastern flank of it here terrific thunderstorms have been exploding ahead of it. the big story, well out ahead of the storm is the heat. are you ready for triple-digits? it's not that you are ready.

including physicists stephen hawking and steve woz with knee yak issued a warning in a letter published today. they say autonomous weapons systems which use artificial intelligence to select targets without human intervention should be banned. predicting in the wrong hands, killer roboting could be used for assassinations and ethnic cleansing and would lead to a global arms race to rival the nuclear era. the u.s. military has invested heavily in the development of robotics for use on the battlefield. but mostly in a non-lethal capacity. this four-legged friend has been designed to help soldiers carry heavy gear across rough terrain. without the need for a driver. and this tiny machine can creep across enemy lines and is equipped with infrared cameras. lethal drones have been used for

we begin this hour in turkey where military jets are striking more terror targets in northern iraq and along the syrian border. the air campaign is aimed at turkish militants who they blamed at several attacks. the air strikes come as nato ambassadors pledge support for turkey's war against terror. the senior international correspondent brings us the latest. >> the support for the nato ambassador is very important for turkey. they didn't go into the meeting looking to get additional equipment. what they went in to do was to explain why their threat assessment change and why they decided now it's necessary to target the pkk and isis as well. until now the threat assessment has been the pkk is the biggest threat and it's syria and the growing influence of iran and isis a distant third.

is steven le burke, an off duty detective. this captured this past sunday night from a camera on the motorist dashboard. he backs up, fearful. >> i will put a hole through your head. >> that kind of a threat acceptable under any circumstances? >> let me say that under these particular circumstances, it is a problem if the person in question being stopped was unaware he was a police officer and backing up possibly concerned for his safety. >> he does appear to pull his badge, but it is not clearly seen. despite the pleas for understanding, the detective keeps on threatening. >> i didn't see the sign. >> you're lucky i'm a cop because i will beat you right now. >> here insists the car was driving dangerously. >> the motorist only called himself michael admits he took a

temperatures into the mid-and lower 80s. temperatures into the triple-digits and this is the heat index and we combine the air with the humidity and the duchts into the 70s makes it feel like 106 and 108. the heat wave continues. here is where we will have heat indeces up to about 110. the trn is the prolonged heat wave. temps in the 90s for a couple of days. in places three days would make an official heat wave. boston doing better in the mid-and upper 80s. new york into the low 90s and we will continue to see the temperatures staying into the 90s by friday. we will have showers and thunderstorms moving thursday

>> i'm errol barnett. this is "cnn newsroom." migrants desperate to reach england have made attempts to enter the eurotunnel. at least 1,500 migrants tried to storm the tunnel from the beverage french side. one was found dead. >> david cameron is saying that both countries are working to increase security at the tunnel. >> this is very concerning as you said. we're working closely with the french. the home secretary met with the interior minister. we invested money in the fencing around calais. we are putting fencing around the entrance at the tunnel. we're doing everything we can. >> the latest attempt follows a similar one late monday night, when tunnel officials say about

2,000 migrants tried to enter the eurotunnel in france. the british freight transportation administration released a statement saying the migrant situation has become, i'm quoting here, a national emergency. >> many syrians caught up in that country's civil war, dream of a future across the mediterranean in europe. >> if they have the money, smugglers can get them there. arwa damon is investigating the lucrative trade. here's our report. >> reporter: it's the illusion that lies beyond these waters. the illusion of a better life in europe that drives many to make the treacherous journey. the vast majority of them syrians. their country, decimated. they easy prey for the smuggling vultures. earlier this year we met this syrian family that doesn't want to be identified.

a barrel bomb hit the home next to theirs, covering them in dust. we used to hide underground, sometimes for three to four days mohammed says. his children still have nightmares of the dead and shredded bodice. this 12-year-old says he wanted to bring his english and math books. his younger sister, her toys. mohammed sold everything to come up with the $5,500 each the smugger was charging. now, made all the more lucrative. facebook pages, regularly changing. opening advertise smuggling services. the names of known cafes where smugglers can be found, spread by word of mouth. we call a number for one of them.

the smuggler asks if i would like to travel by plane or boat. the boat would cost me $5,700. he calls back later and says i can even fly to europe from turkey with a european passport that he can obtain. and would cost me around $10,000. this man halid, is another smuggler who agrees to speak with us as long as we conceal his identity. the cost varies between italy and greece. between $4,000 to $7,000 halid tells us. i put you in a home. i get you food and drink, he continues. i call you to tell you the trip is happening in an hour and to get ready. from there, small fishing boats take the migrants out to larger cargo ships, waiting in

clean up another set of comments. this time it has nothing to do with illegal immigration. but trump's own marriage. his long-time counsel and spokesman, michael cohen, is under fire for telling "the daily beast," you cannot rape your spouse. those five words set off a firestorm. >> a decade - old allegation against donald trump. >> donald trump's campaign is issuing a strong report. >> cohen made the comment, trying to keep the daily beast from reviving a 1989 allegation. in the divorce proceedings, she said trump forced her to have sex against her will. a statement she later recanted. cohen backtracked, saying in my moment of shock and anger, i made an inarticulate comment, which i do not believe, which i apologize for entirely. marital rape is against the law in all 50 states. the trump campaign distanced

itself from cohen. trump's campaign manager told cnn, michael cohen is a corporate employee and is not affiliated with the campaign in any way. in the middle of it all, ivana trump issued a statement of her own saying, their divorce was a time of very high tension. but she added, i have nothing but fondness for donald. all this with only a week to go before the first republican presidential debate as trump's standing soars. tonight, a new poll of new hampshire voters shows trump's on top of all gop candidate, with twice the support of his nearest rival, jeb bush. >> ease doing well because he's speaking his mind. he's a breath of fresh air. he's not like all of the other politicians who have focus groups and tell him what to say and how to say it and what words to use. >> reporter: jeff zeleny cnn, nashua new hampshire.

you've called donald trump dangerous. but with each controversy he's been through he's only risen in the polls. donald trump aside, what does that say about republican sentiment right now? the electorate? >> the republican electorate, there's a lot of anger out there. unfortunately, donald trump isn't the solution for that anger. donald trump is exploiting that anger, as a guy who is a talented showman and a conman where he is tricking conservatives to believing he is one of them. he's not. he's a liberal. >> what is the outcome for the republican party ahead of debates? is this a distraction or a shakeup that the party needs? >> it's a distraction. i believe you'll have a lot of high-quality candidates on that stage, with one exception, donald trump. and those folks have thought through a lot of serious alternatives to hillary clinton's policies. and it's going to be something where trump tries to exploit and

>> she cannot believe she committed suicide. they're not buying that. an american dentist is being sought in the death of a prized lion in zimbabwe. he said in a statement he hired professional guides and thought his hunting trip was legal. >> this has people all around the world, particularly on social media, outraged. zimbabwean officials say the lion was killed illegally. david mckenzie has more on the lion's death and renewed calls to change hunting regulations. >> reporter: cecil was one of africa's best-known lions. a major tourist draw. conservationalists and police say he was lured and killed by an american hunter. alleging it's this man. dr. walter palmer an avid trophy hunter in his 50s and a dentist from minnesota. in a statement, palmer admits to killing cecil. but he didn't know the lion's

significance and relied on the expertise of local guides. cecil's kills has sparked outrage on social media and renewed calls to ban trophy hunting. conservationists have been calling for a ban for years. >> killing sufficient an animal because you want to have a picture and the skin on your wall it's a form of sickness. >> does it make you angry? >> extremely angry. >> reporter: there's a sanctuary that's rescued scores of big cats. many bred to be hunted. when he was a few weeks old, he was taken away from his mother. he was bred to be killed. and trophy hunters for a gorgeous male lion will pay tens of thousands of dollars. hunting group says that money can be funneled back into conservation. but lion numbers have plummeted,

welcome back everyone. jonathan pollard, a convicted spy for israel will soon be free after spending nearly 30 years in a u.s. prison. pollard was a former u.s. navy intelligence analyst, sentenced to life behind bars for giving top secret u.s. government information to israel. >> look how old that file video is. benjamin netanyahu says he's pleased with the u.s. decision. and said the following, quote, throughout his time in prison i raised the issue of his release in my meetings and conversations of the leadership of successive u.s. administrations. we're looking forward to his release. staying in that region now. there's outrage in the west bank after a 20-year-old palestinian was shot and killed by an israeli soldier. >> is typically the case in these types of incidents, details surrounding it are murky. but the anger and sorrow are very clear. aaron mclaughlin has more.

>> reporter: the body of mohammed abu latifah taken for funeral. he died after running away. the israelis had come to his house at dawn to arrest him and another man. they had been suspected of planning an attack. abu latifah ran to the roof. he was injured after he fell from a rooftop. his family denies he fell. they shot him. all of the injuries were to the bottom of his body. then, he butwas arrested. now, his mother weeps over his grave. decide her the tomb of an 18-year-old. a high-ranking israeli commander shot him dead. video shows he was running away. it shows him throw a stone at an israeli vehicle. two soldiers exit the car ready

to fire. the shooting happens out of frame. the incident was recorded on a camera at this gas station. it took place just over that way. the medical report says he was shot three times, twice to the back and once to the side of his face. the israeli military says it's still investigating. fit released photos of the shattered windshield. and an undated photo of him holding a machine gun. the commander fearing a lynch that would place his subordinates and himself in mortal danger exited the vehicle and implemented standard procedure. >> it's impossible to see how a youth who was running away from you, can pose a mortal danger that would justify shooting to kill at him. >> reporter: high-ranking government officials express support for the israeli commander. on his facebook page, the

education minister posted, a man comes to kill you, kill him first. this is the conduct that we expect from idf commanders. >> this is sending a very clear message to soldiers. that this is acceptable and even desirable behavior. >> reporter: this is the third son his mother has buried. two other sons were killed during the second intifadah. she has little hope for justice. every time a new generation comes they cut them off and kill them, she says. down the road from the house, palestinian youth throw more stones at israeli soldiers protests of the latest palestinian death. the soldiers fire back both real and rubber bullets. and the cycle continues. erin mclaughlin. now, to the u.s. where a south florida man is under

arrest charged with planning to use a weapon of mass destruction. >> his name is harlem suarez. he is 23 years old and he planned to bury a nail bomb on a beach in key west and set it off with a cell phone. he first came to investigators' attention by posting pro-isis messages on facebook. it's just past 10:00 a.m. in turkey where the military has new support for its fight against terrorists. >> there is some concern about who exactly turkey is targeting. here's our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr. >> reporter: turkish war planes pound kurdish targets, after a round of air strikes inside syria. it comes as nato held a rare session, to hear turkey's rising

authorities are seeking a dentist for killing a prized lion in a national park. cecil was revered by visitors and locals. walter palmer said he hired professional guides and thought his trip was legal and properly handled. a family is grieving while a mother was killed riding a mall escalator with her young son. >> an investigation shows some mall employees had five minutes to show down what would be the deadly escalator. we have to give you a warning. what you are about to see is disturbing. >> it was supposed to be a relaxing day at the mall. her husband, says there were no warning signs at the escalator. nobody telling her not to step on. she picked up her child when the staff member warned that the

escalator was dangerous. she picked him up and prepared to step over. then the floor panel collapsed. workers had five minutes warning to shut the escalator down. at sock 01 all appears normal. at 10:05, two work eshgsers almost fall through. at 10:10, they step on that moving staircase. workers point to the same loose panel. the mom pushes her son to safety before the mom is pulled to her death. it's been two weeks ago, this little girl was playing near another escalator. her hand trapped inside. in a separate incident sunday a

boy suffered minor injuries after his foot got stuck in an escalator at a beijing mall. the mall stayed open customers n the seventh floor. it took crews four hours to dismantle the escalator and find the body of the young mother. gone forever because her son wanted to ride the escalator. a local official claimed human error for what happened. the mall has not returned our repeated phone calls. this is not unprecedented in china. there was an incident last year when 13 people were injured when an escalator reversed direction. and a similar incident back in 2011 in a subway here in beijing, injured 30 people and killed a teenager. will ripley cnn, beijing. want to take you to central canada now. people there had to take cover from a series of violent storms. we can show you one of them in the provinceeince of manitoba.

>> it's like the movie "twister." >> it is. it ripped across farmland and prairies for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. that's a long time. >> and tornadoes usually last only a few minutes. this tornado in particular snapped some utility poles damaged a bridge and tore the asphalt off of roads. our meteorologist ivanka cabrera joins us now. >> it was moving through prairies and farmland. a little further to the east winnipeg, that would have been a different story. that's we talk about tornadoes that hit the tornados in the united states. you the get into trouble. in manitoba in this start of southwestern manitoba, not too many folks here.

just north of the dakotas in the united states. well defined tornado vortex here. that moved through on monday night. and that brought down that wedge tornado. we're thankful it hit rural areas. a wedge tornado can have winds in excess of 200 miles per hour. this is a big storm system. on the backside of it we've been seeing snow in montana, that's happening. to the east a heat wave under way. in the southeast this, is the way it's been. dew points in the 70s. makes it feel like it's 105-110. a little better to the north and west. to the north and east get ready. it's hot and it will stay hot and remain hot through the weekend. look at new york city. boston you're doing okay in the upper 80s, new york city, 90s. 90s in philly. and in d.c. the mid-90s.

it was roughly 24 hours ago, when we were reporting on the breaking developments surrounding steamy allegations rocking the house of lords. >> lord sewel, setting standards for parliament, finds himself in the middle of a scandal, said to involve drugs and prostitution. here's our max foster with more. >> reporter: "the sun" on sunday. lord sewel, allegedly snorting cocaine at a sex party with

prostitutes. he resigns from his committee roles. on monday wearing an orange bra. the police announce an investigation. and sewel takes a leave of on sense, as he calls it, from the lords. "the sun" on tuesday, he's quoted as bragging about adulterous affairs and resigns from the lords once and for all. it was the flood of detail from this covert detail that undermined sewel. and he conceded threatened the reputation of the lords. the bigger question is whether or not my behavior was compatible with the house of lords, or whether it would undermine the public confidence in the house of lords. the answer to both of these questions remain that i can serve the house by leaving it. he had few defenders, least of

all, barroness stowell. >> i think it's really important that all of us as members of the house of lords, especially because we are r unelected, consistently meet the expectations that the public have of us. >> reporter: the liberal democratic leader said the scandal showed the lords was rotten to the core. but prime minister david cameron appeared to rule out reform saying he had tried and failed in the last parliament to do so. and was not planning to go down that route again. there may be more salacious detail to come. but this house hopes the mud won't stick here now that sewel has gone. the irony being that he was in charge of setting parliament standards. max foster, cnn, london. >> certainly an embarrassing development for lord sewel. a report on twitter's earnings sent the stock on a

wild ride on tuesday. the company beat expectations in the second quarter on revenue of about $502 million. and that caused shares to soar by more than 5%. but the story changed somewhat didn't it? >> that's right. growth among new twitter users wasn't as strong. rising 15% from the previous year. investors said that new twitter features were not attracting and keeping new users. shares diving 11% after an after-hours trading. that's you know -- it wasn't good. you get the point. >> twitter's influence continues to grow despite its problems. >> playing a pivotal roll in events. claire sebastian explains. >> reporter: from politics to popular culture, over the past few months twitter has been at the center of it all.

athens june 27th. the greek prime minister announcing a shock referendum on the bailout terms set by europe. it didn't end there. throughout that day, he tweeted 23 times, each more defiant than the last. >> we don't need to ask permission. to get the voice of the greek people to be heard. >> reporter: as the crisis escalated, parallel protests on the streets and on twitter. the greek finance minister even tweeting out his resignation. >> today, there's an expectations of transparency. there's a lot of politics that take place on twitter. and it can be perilous because some of the negotiations are extremely complex. >> reporter: they don't come much more complex than a nuclear deal with iran. to say key parts of this historic moment played out on twitter would be an understatement.

on the day the deal was reached, the iranian president's twitter account sent out 21 tweets. and the white house, faced with the task of selling the deal to a skeptical congress they went one step further. they set up a brand-new account, @theirandeal. >> using twitter for what it was designed for. explaining complex nuclear agreements involving several nations. >> reporter: jokes aside, twitter has become a powerful tool. and no one knows that better than taylor swift. ♪ shake it off ♪ >> reporter: on june 21st, the pop star tweeted to apple, to her 61 million followers. it was an open letter saying she would not release her album on apple's music service because the company wasn't paying artists during its three-month trial. apple reversing its policy. >> i think that's an amazing example of how influence and authority has really has been

democktized today. here we have a performer who stopped one of the most powerful companies in the world in their tracks within 24 hours. >> reporter: twitter, the company, is in a period of transition. the power its users can wield, seems to be greater than ever. >> about two years ago amazon introduced a prototype program to use drones to deliver packages. >> now, the company is proposinge ing dividing up drone zones. the vice president of amazon prime air, said the traffic would be based on a drone's mission and capabilities. 0 to 200 feet above ground would be for low-speed traffic, such as recreational drones. i think we're in the future. >> it sounds like it. package delivery drones would be between 200 and 400 feet above
