long distances. the 4,000 or so kilometers from the west coast of australia all the way to the eastern coastal regions of africa. this is known as the indian ocean gyre. it rerotates in the counter clockwise fashion. it is small scale and large scale rotation patterns. let's use an analogy here. let's say we drop a plastic bottle in the ocean. what will it do? eventually we will see the plastic bottle float. it will move along the water until it raefs an immovable surface like the beach of reunion island or coast of madagascar for instance and fortunately there are some high end computer models known as a drift analysis that can show exactly where debris will eventually end up as we go forward it a 12-month to 14-month period. this is the adrift.org.au website.
11:15 pm
you can find this on-line yourself to see exactly what i'm discussing. this is if we place a plastic bottle into the indian ocean where the actual search area is undergoing off the west coast of australia. if we did that with today's ocean currents it would bring that plastic bottle or the purported debris from the mh370 flight west ward. and we would see it travel that 4,000 kilometer journey to the west coast of africa perhaps landing up on reunion island or the coast of madagascar tanzania. we know it floats and we know it can go great distances. now the next question is marine biologists and scientists will pay very close attention to the barnacles that they have been talking about since they found this piece. this is going to help determine just how long this purported device has been floating amongst the indian ocean. linda, back to you. >> quite incredible. and amazing graphics there to explain it all. derek van dam, thank you very much. we are going to have much

malaysian government report issued in march said that there is no proof of wrongdoing by the airplane's crew and it is said in part that there were no behavioral signs of social isolation, change in habits or interest self neglect, drug or alcohol abuse of the captain, first officer and cabin crew. the hope now is that finding debris brings them closer to answers. lynda, george? >> australia's deputy prime minister said it is looks very likely that the debre from reunion island may be from a boeing triple 7. >> david joins us live from hong kong. david, good to have you with us. saying it directly that the piece of wreckage washing ashore that it is consistent with the modeling they had done. what more can you tell us? >>. >> reporter: george that's right. he is echoing what many others have said. top invest getter in australia, malaysian prime minister that

12:41 am
>> usaustralian prime minister says there is evidence this is from a boeing 777, which is the same as mh370 which as you know disappeared march of last year. it is possible that ocean currents carried the debris across the ocean over the last 17 months. omar appointed his successor, a new leader, monsour mansour. >> he has been a deputy leader since 2010. he was formally the militant group's palestinianster of civil even aviation transportation. senior international correspondent nic robertson is following all of this and jins us now. nic, givener with learning that the former leader may have died two years ago, does this mean that this new appointed leader has been calling the shots all of this time?
12:42 am
>> what we are understanding is that a small core of the leadership has known omar is not around it answer questions and hid that from the rest of the organization to keep unity. the idea is that if no one questioned whether omar was dead then it wouldn't rock the boat if you will. and the consensus was in effect that we know which direction the organization is going in. we know what we want to do. we know the information we want it pass on to the rank and file and just continue in that direction. dent rock the boat. don't threaten stability over the taliban as a whole. and that's the position that seems that mansour has taken. but as the pressure for peace talks has grown stronger and greater, it has begun to force the issue that questions that have been in essence deferred to we better check on that with omar. and it is called into question where are the answers?
12:43 am
and so the close come to peace talks and issue of omar's whereabouts has come to the point of the leadership has actually had to acknowledge to the base that he is dead. now mansour really is sort of taking over leadership that is far from clear, if you are able to hold on to it or hold on to the unity of the taliban that omar had. >> we know that those peace talks were set to continue today between the afghan government and the taliban. what is going to happen now? >> well they are not, the talks in the short term are not going it happen. certainly not happening today as planned. and that's really to be expected as a taliban try to regroup and figure out, you know what is their voice. what is their position. because fundamentally that's been called into question. and there are desperate voices within the organization. omar's son, according to some reports, wanted to be leader. there are more hard-line factions within the taliban that don't want to get into talks.
12:44 am
there was an assessment that omar didn't want it get into talks. with him gone this left a roadblock to that. manhour, the mansour, the new leader does want to get into talks, that's what he understand. in the past it's been positions in the government for taliban positions within the military structure for a number of taliban fighters within the context of the afghan army. so there have been sort of some ground work laid for peace talks in the past. but the political reconciliation the whole of the taliban organization many are assessing to the potentially under threat at this moment. if the taliban stays together under mansour then perhaps they can get under talks and his guidance after more peaceful strategy and accommodation can be made with the government over a period of time p but the threat of the organization is if they can't state together then isis within afghanistan
12:45 am
that is growing, looks to be a potential winner to pull away some of the commanders. isis and afghanistan has taken taliban commanders from pakistan when the leadership there, leaders killed in drone strikes, the organizations offractured and many have joined isis. will it be a similar situation here? will there be a faction pulling away under the leadership of omar's son and will they go for peace or not. this is the real threat for long-term peace talks. if the organization fractured the reality of successful talks really diminishes lynda. >> great analysis. nick roberts in istanbul turkey. >> the u.s. is wanting to extradite a dentist to zimbabwe for killing a lion there. petitions have 220,000 signatures.

palestinian off course. it does not come to any firm cannot collusions it what eventually happened to the plane. >>. >> we have more on the debris found off the coast of reunion island. derek have not dam joins us. derek, is it feasible that the mh370 debris could have travelled that far across the ocean. >> it is a perfectly reasonable question to answer that. i will answer that by diving deep into this actual piece they found on the coast of reunion. this is known as a flaperon. this is part of the wing. i've investigated the substance of it. it it is composite material. very well sealed and therefore very buoyant and it could literally float for hundreds an hundreds of kilometers. that's what we suspect it actually did. we know it can float. how did it float so far. it got stuck in what is known as a gyre. this is a large ocean circulation. we have about five of them across the world. this is the indian ocean gyre.
12:52 am
this stretch hes from western australia where the is current search efforts are under way and this counter clockwise retags across the northern parts of the indian ocean brings it into the west or east coast of africa. including reunion, perhaps madagascar mauritius, even the coast of tanzania for instance. let's use an analogy here. let's actually drop a plastic bottle into the indian ocean. what will it do? obviously we expect this to drift. but only drift as far as it possibly can. it reaches an immovable object like the coast of reunion or coast of madagascar and it comes to an abrupt halt on the shoreline. well fortunately we have some pretty impressive intellectual people out there that come up with what is called a drift analysis. this allows for marine biologists and scientists actually scouring this area for any remnants of mh370 plane. and it allows us to show where
12:53 am
the debris field started or where they expect that the purported plane went miss pg. ing ing g /* /* then we can see if we drop a plastic bottle in the ocean, where it would travel. and it is very clear. all models conclusively indicating we would see the west ward drift and it would make that 4,000 kilometer journey across the indian ocean getting caught up in that large ocean circulation i talked about a moment ago, eventually reaping the shores of africa or reunion island. i would expect that search efforts are going to be widened for more debris if you ask me. this is also going to be an integral part of the search efforts going forward. it is these barnacles we keep talking about on the flaperon device. this will indicate to marine biologists and scientists just how long this part of the plane was actually floating amongst
