we're following two big breaking news stories right now. the malaysian government makes it official. debris found does belong to the boeing triple 7, that as another related object has been found. >> we were talking about from what we know now a routine traffic stop and that results in an officer losing his life. breaking news in memphis, a manhunt this morning for a person who gunned down a police officer during a traffic stop.
3:01 am
good morning. >> we want to begin with breaking news in the search for malaysia airlines flight 370. this metal object of interest is how it's being characterized. it's been found on reunion island. there is the picture. there are some markings that are being examined. this is the first image that we've getting of that object. and cnn is continuing to get information from a alimony government official there. but a source tells us the origin of this debris is what still needs to be verified. but take a look there. everybody i'm sure has an opinion about what they think it could be. as we zoom in there you could see some markings that could help identify it. >> a piece of an aircraft wing that washed up on the island has officially been identified as part of a boeing triple 7
3:02 am
aircra aircraft. this is the flaperon. that idea is coming from french authorities. mh370 disappeared 17 months ago and was a triple 7 aircraft. the debris arrived yesterday in toulouse. you see it here under police guard. we are covering both of these developments this morning. we've got erin mcloughlin on reunion island. tell us about that metal object of interest. >> reporter: good morning, victor. it was found on a beach not far from here, about 11 and a half miles from where they picked up the piece of debris.
3:03 am
a photo of the object shows a fw twisted piece of metal with chinese characters on it. a team of eight police officers were out on that beach earlier today to pick it up. but so far being very tight lipped as to what it could be. it's a metal object of interest they're investigating further. refusing to speculate if this could be tied to mh370. >> there are reports that people on this island have said they saw wreckage and debris potentially months ago. have you ever been hearing anymore about that? >> reporter: we have been hearing those stories, but we've been so far unable to verify them. a local radio station has been absolutely inupdan dainundated
3:04 am
called. we know there are teams of volunteers out scouring the beaches, curiosity seekers who genuinely want to help solve this mystery. each piece of debris is potentially a clue, not only to where the wreckage may be, but also to how the plane possibly came down. >> thank you so much erin. >> it is confirmed, again, this debris is from a boeing triple 7. what else are your hearing there? >> reporter: it is confirmed by the malaysian transportation ministry. they've released a statement just this morning. they have received the triple 7.
3:05 am
they must have looked at the dimensions of it. they must have looked at that flaperon in great detail and and lie analyzed it. there were two serial numbers they collected from it and had a look at it. that is likely how these groups got together. it was the united states national transportation safety board. it was the french authorities and boeing and malaysian authorities. it's a considerable team. it's a civil aviation authority, a specific investigation team that covers mh370 itself and malaysia airlines. now they have confirmed it is a flaperon from a triple 7 aircraft. that isn't so say that it's from mh370 specifically. but they will be coming here to this lab run by the french ministry of defense. it's a highly technical lab with
3:06 am
a lot of forensic expertise that can look into and confirm whether this potentially did come from mh370. now, of course there was another piece that was delivered to france as well yesterday. that is a piece believed to be a piece of suitcase. that was delivered to a lab in paris or just outside. it's run by the national police. it's the criminal research institute. that's being analyzed as well. this morning in an interview with the australia press, the deputy prime minister has said that it doesn't have any kind of marine life. the piece that was now confirmed to be a flaperon from the triple 7 aircraft had a lot of barnacles attached to it,
3:07 am
telling the story it was in the sea for a very long time. it had marine life growing on it. this piece hasn't. it is a standard operating procedure for any investigation like this. and they will have collected dna from family members of the passengers on board flight mh370 and now they'll go through that verification process. >> we have with us now julian bray joining us via skype, aviation expert. you've seen that photo of this metal object of interest. when you see this, can you identify this as some part of a plane. or does any element or characteristic stand out? >> it could well be from our
3:08 am
subject aircraft. but there again, first of all, we have to establish the aircraft type. if it is from the triple 7, that is one more piece in the jigsaw. and then they have to make sure it came from this particular aircraft. and that is the big leap they're all going to have to do. and that's why they're going to start on the flaperon first. they're going into closed meetings on monday and tuesday because there has to be a magistrate present during the initial stages of examining the evidence. >> now, you've seen the picture that ste we have on air now. have you seen those characters? do you recognize those? we've learn that those might be instructions or a brand name. but when you see those
3:09 am
characters, do those indicate anything for you? >> let's put it like this, you've got to remember it's been in the sea for a long time. so you can't actually read it. it could be -- the point is you want it to be definitive. so there's a big question mark. they will actually try and scrape away at the surface very very gently and use various solvents in order to get through to the substrate where all the prints will be. it can be done. so forensically they can get down and reveal all the words and characters. and that will give them a clear indication as to where it came from. and there are amazing reports coming out this morning. a few days ago we suggested there should be more than one piece of debris washing up. and we get more debris washing
3:10 am
up. quite amazing. cnn is ahead of the game. >> this incident over the last 17 months that there has been no debris, now the confirmation that the flaperon was from a triple 7. we've heard from sources from the investigative side that they identified that this was likely part of a triple 7. but when you get to small parts like this object of interest, how complicated is the confirmation that this is part of a triple 7? i'd imagine that many of these parts are used in many different models. >> not only that. they're also manufactured in several different countries. they're actually making flaperons on behalf of boeing and they've been doing it since 2004. we thought could it be a reject
3:11 am
that somehow found its way into the ocean, should have gone for recycling but somebody tossed it into the ocean and it's now been washed up. but the fact that we've got other bits coming forward, might suggest -- and there's a big might there -- that this could be the mother lode of what we need to see. so they've got to sort of beef this up so they can actually move the search nearer to the island. >> malaysian authorities have announced they're reaching out to authorities in territories within the vi tinty of reunion island to allow for experts to conduct more substantive analysis should more debris surface. thanks so much. we'll talk more throughout the morning as we learn more about this metal object of interest.
3:12 am
thanks. we want to get you some other breaking now we're following out of tennessee this morning. there is a desperate manhunt for whoever shot and killed a police officer in what should have been a routine traffic stop. 33-year-old shawn bolten died late last night. >> reporter: this is a tragic situation in the city of memphis. as you mentioned, an active search underway right now for whoever is responsible for the fatal shooting of a police officer in memphis overnight, 33-year-old shawn bolten was the office who was shot and killed. it has been reported that it was a citizen who used that officer's radio to notify police that one of their own had been shot. the police director of the

3:35 am
engine and more importantly the black boxes and the remains of the victims of this horrible crash. those are at the bottom of the ocean someplace more likely than not. >> i want to take a look at the latest image of what they have discovered overnight here. because one of the things of great interest, i think, to a lot of people are the markings, the characteristics that are on this piece of metal that was found. how quickly might they be able to deduce or id a plane based on those characteristics? >> now that it's in the hands of the french, the bea, that's the french equivalent of the ntsb, it's become a criminal investigation. so i think it's going to be some time before you get any sort of official word on what that next
3:36 am
piece means and what it might hold in terms of information about the plane. >> as we talk more about this underwater search for the massive amounts of debris, so far you've got a flaperon from a triple 7. and this, as you can see from the picture, this is just between rocks or stones on this beach. this isn't a very large part, to put that into some context there. >> correct. >> i'd imagine they would be studying those gyres, the movements of the current there is. how would that put them towards the rest of mh370? >> great question. they have to backtrack that over 500 days to make it help with the search for where the x marks the spot is. that's an extremely difficult thing to do.
3:37 am
it's thousands of miles. there have been typhoons, there have been monsoonal changes in the weather pattern. so to be able to backtrack it to the point where it makes sense is going to be very difficult. the one thing that it will do is give those teams that are out there at this very moment searching and have been doing it month after month after month, it will give them a boost knowing there's actually a target out there somewhere that they're looking for. >> and how confident are you that they will eventually find this crash site location if these items do prove to be from mh370? >> right now i'm very confident. i think -- i've got some colleagues out there. i think they've got the right equipment and the right game plan. i've seen an image or two. they're about halfway done with the primary search area. i've been there myself.

good to have you. we don't know because fox has not said and won't say which polls will be used. but take a look at this. first, we've got the top nine, solid here, tenth spot going to governor kasich. meanwhile rick perry, rick santorum, others part farther d the list. you've got on the outside santorum and now bobby jindal. it all depends on which go with. i wonder, though, that 10th to 11th spot, being in the round table versus the debate, is the difference as dramatic as some have said it is? >> it's interesting. you could argue it both ways. there's something inherent in
4:33 am
being in the big debate that really can't be discounted. at the same time that debate is going to be more chaotic and hectic. if you think about it, would you rather be the ninth or 10th person in the debate that will probably be the donald trump show or would you rather be in a small debate where you'll have more time to talk and make your case? there's actually an opportunity in being in the second debate. some people call it the kiddy table debate. if you win that debate, now you're on an upward trajectory. you've now got momentum. if you're a rick perry, a john kasich, a chris christie, you've got to project this idea that you want to be in that big debate. but if you don't, you've got a grievance to complain about, a

4:35 am
then you have to prepare for that and tough see yourself as someone who's responding to those big candidates who are going to be in the center and going to get all the spotlight. the camera is going to pan back and forth and they're always going to come back to trump. what happens whereas if you're on that smaller stage, the earlier stage, you can more define your own candidacy and put forth your own message. those candidates will have what i think is a better opportunity to define their own case. >> let's put up the group of eight that cnn believes are safe for the debate. let's put that back up on the screen. so i'm going ask you for not a prediction, but i'll phrase it as an expectation. who do you expect will take those last two spots? >> i've got to go with chris christie and rick perry. these are the guys who have been

my father goes around all across the country speaking to high school student athletes and their families. he said that just a few weeks ago he was out west and there were two girls who were playing lacrosse, and they were already offered scholarships, also 13 years old. also only in the 8th grade. and a lot of people think that this is maybe too young. that the ncaa should step in and not allow it. are we setting these kids up for possible failure? we asked you your comments, and your insight, and here's what you had to say. melanie said sadly another example of college sports looking at winning instead of academics and what's best for our youth. must be 17. kids should be at least a junior in high school because most kids tent to think the job is done once they're committed. it's like a distraction. if a kid had won an academic scholarship at 13 to ucla, would he be too young then? no, of course not. i thought that was an interesting comment. roy said it takes the pressure off having to find a way to pay for college off the shoulders of the parents.
