gunfire. one in fact involving plain clothe officers responding after police say they came under heavy fire. the alleged shooter is in critical condition and undergoing surgery. let's get the latest from cnn's sara sidner. i understand, >> reporter: i did, got caught in the middle of it. as protesters squared up with police, those conversations going back and forth with protesters chanting and police standing in their riot gear, hundreds of yards away from where they were we suddenly heard gunshots ring out. we were in the middle of talking with the new interim police chief when those shots were fired. gunshots rang out on the streets of ferguson on the one-year anniversary of michael brown's death. erupting into chaos overnight when gunfire sent protesters and police running for cover.

>> the suspect engages them with gunfire. the plain clothes detectives returned fire from the inside of the band. >> reporter: st. louis county police say officers were involved in heavy gunfire in two shootings sunday night. in one incident police say a suspect shot directly at plain clothes officers with a stolen .9 million millimeter. >> the suspect is in critical unstable condition. >> reporter: we captured gunshots on camera as i interviewed the police chief. angry protesters clashing with police hurting bottles and bricks at officers. police deploying tear gas to disperse the crowds. these images capture bullet holes and police cruisers caught in the cross fire. the night of unrest following a

day of peaceful vigils to remember brown's death and the movement it started. demonstrators marched and observed four minutes of silence, the amount of time brown's body lay on the street after he was shot. brown's killing sparked outrage and protests nationwide though the officer was later cleared by both a grand jury and the department of justice investigation, anger bubbled over. violence then mirroring violence now one year later. and the. person who was shot, we are told by police s in unstable and critical condition at this time. they have not released his name. we also understand that there are two police officers who were pepper sprayed by protesters. two unmarked police cruisers that were hit with gunfire and one officer who had had lacerations two her face because someone threw a rock or a brick

towards her. that's the scene right now. everything z has really calmed down. people have dispersed, but be the protesters saying this wasn't anything to do with them and upset about the fact that there was a shooting tonight. >> there's been that tension since the beginning about who is doing it, why they are doing it and one thing we know for sure at night things tend to change there. let's get some perspective from someone on the ground there living it. the editorial director for the st. louis american. he's very involved in the community. chris, what's your take? >> well, we only have the police version of events. this man was shot behind a building in this foot pursuit. one thing i heard from the police chief, i just left his press conference, he insisted they couldn't be protesters because they come out to seek positive change, they don't pull guns on people. >> right, but it's always been a

mixed population about who is doing what. you helped us navigate that situation many a a night down there. what do you believe about the status there now? how are the tensions? has anything gotten better? >> well, chris, what you kind of have here is one problem encroaching upon another. we have a problem of gun violence in the city of st. louis and our suburbs. we have a problem with the impact of law enforcement on african-americans. the protesters are out to address one problem, which is this violent impact of law enforcement on african-americans. but tonight i would say they stumbled upon another problem, which is that too many people have guns and aren't afraid to use them for no good reason. >> you don't see this as a suggestion that things are going to e blow up there again. do you see any changes in the works? any attitude changes in the communities? >> well, i see a national

movement that started in ferguson. it's one year on and it's been an exciting time to be here the last few days. i have gone to organizer meetings and church services and it's been a thrilling time to be here. but we have people with guns in these communities and some of them showed up on a fringe of the protest tonight. >> is it getting any better? do you see more. police presence in a positive way in the neighborhoods? more people on the street? heard about the budgeting? we know the changes towards police and community, where is that in your opinion? >> ferguson is still in damage control mode with the police department. they don't have a deal with the department of justice. they have an interim chief. until they have a permanent chief, you're not going to see any big change in ferguson. you haven't seen any big change. the county police chief, i have

seen an ark in him pr he talked about a civil rights movement. that's not the man we heard last august. he's learned he has to know the community to police it. i think the way he spoke about the shooting reflects real growth. he assumed if they were pulling guns on his officers, as this it person allegedly did, that they weren't protesters because he see what is protesters do, they protest. >> do people accept the police version of what happened there of why this happened and why the guy had the gun, which was supposedly a stolen weapon? >> i would say probably not. the people that trust law enforcement, probably not. if people had trust law enforcement and the people that distrust law enforcement distrust law enforcement statements and evidence. that's just a reality we're in here. >> the biggest question of the moment will be what's the word on the street about whether or not this first anniversary is going to be used as a precipitating moment for more

violence. are you hearing anything that concerns you? you had a pretty good finger of the pulse of people coming in from outside to use the opportunity a year ago. what are you hearing now? >> they have more opportunity today tan yesterday because of what happened last night. and today will be a critical day. if there are more people that want to come out and create mayhem and make it difficult to move forward constructively, they have an opportunity much more than they did a day before when we had a beautiful, peaceful commemoration weekend going. there was grief and there was anger and people need positive change, but there was also a coming together of a national movement that started here and came back to the origin. >> chris, you have been very helpful to us in understanding the situation on the ground. let us know what you find out. be safe and thank you. >> thanks, chris. now to texas where the fbi is joining the investigation into an officer-involved shooting death of an unarmed black college football player.

christian taylor was shot multiple times by an officer in train i training. this it morning newly released edited surveillance video showing the moments before the fatal shots were fired. ed is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, all this coming on the heels of the anniversary in ferguson, but this was at 1:00 in. the morning. 19-year-old christian taylor seen acting erratically at a car dealership. at one point jumping up and vandalizing one of the vehicles in the parking lot of the car dealership. and then police say he drove a jeep inside through the glass walls and into the showroom floor. when officers arrived on the scene, police say they instructed taylor to lay down on the floor and they say that's when he took off running and tried to escape through a a back-door and was shot four

times by a 49-year-old rookie police officer. it was the other officer responding with him, his training officer that used a taser in all of this. christian taylor's father told a local station here that he understands his z son wasn't doing the right thing at the time but doesn't understand why his son had to it die. arlington police asked the fbi to come in and look at the shooting. they say it's too early to lay out all the facts, but they are taking a close look. there was an altercation. they won't say if it was physical or verbal. that's one of the things they are taking a close look at. >> thank you, ed. turmoil in the trump camp. the front running republican unapologetic for a crude remark about megyn kelly. the donald says he did nothing

is that megyn kelly is incredibly popular among republicans. she has a fan base among conservative pundits and commentators. jeb bush made the interesting point saying do we want to isolate 53% of the electorate. that's not a small thing. the question is the 1 in 4 or 5 people who currently support donald trump, they were not phased by the comments made. >> it went up. his numbers went up. >> to the larger question, i have to ask, he says only a a sick person would make that comparison. most women would hear that, would they not, that that's what he was something. does he think women are sick? that's the reduction you could make simply. >> i'm sure donald trump will push back against that, but you're right, most women when they heard that, they did have a

different reaction than men did. and you've heard from republican women, people like carly fiorina, there's a a whole women's caucus among republicans. it's informal, but these are women that are concerned with that gender gap. republicans lost women in 2012 by 12 points. they narrowed it a bit in 2014. i think it was something like 4 points, but there is this party concern about the fortunes of the republican party among women and they know that their presidential aspirations are tied to how women see them. we remember that growth and opportunity project report where women said they felt like the republican party was stuck in the past when it came to women and how they viewed women. >> to be fair, they have every reason in the world to come after trump. he's disruptive to the model right now. he's pulling ahead after that debate. if he's usually not one to say i

didn't mean this. he usually says i mean it and i'll double down. i want to play something that marco rubio said, which certainly galvanized support for him around an issue that's going to mean something today and tomorrow about where we are with the abortion argument and where we say someone is a person and not. let's listen to what he says. this will have a a bigger impact on the gop and women. >> i'm proud to say my faith influences me. it teaches me that god knew us when he formed us in. the womb. . all human life is worthy of protection, even human life that doesn't have a birth certificate, human life that scientists want to have a a debate about. but the science is clear when there is conception, that's a human life in the early stages of its total development and worthy of the protection of our laws. >> why is this so important? i obviously brought this up for a reason. i believe it's an important question. it's hard to dispute that you have the beginning of human life

at conception. what else could it be, as the senator pointed out. but the law says you have to deal when something becomes a person. there's no scientific consensus. when women hear, yes, conception, it's a person, that's it. he's the future of the party. how does that play with the 53%? >> i thought it was a fascinating interview that you conducted with him because i think a lot of people when they look at the large field of what 17 candidates, they continue marco rubio to be at the center when they think about the range of candidates. there are folks who are more moderate. marco rubio is the guy. i don't know if a lot of people knew that rubio would be against the exceptions na -- >> rape and incest. >> he made that clear. i think you have to be pushed a little bit. he didn't come out and say that right away.

had he was trying to say i voted for bills that do have the exceptions because anything to lower the number of abortions, but when pushed, he said i do not support the exceptions. i think that really changes the conversation on where rubio is ideologically and the spectrum looking at him with the other candidates. >> i know on the democratic side, bernie sanders stepping into the conversation of criticism that hillary clinton has been receiving as sexist. i'm curious your thoughts to that. what's your reaction? >> interesting commentary from him. here's a a guy who is not going to run a negative campaign. he was laudatory in that interview that he's known her for a long time and admires her. it was interesting. you have bernie sanders someone having trouble catching on with the obama coalition. that's women and african-american and latinos.

i thought with him recognizing some of the complaints from the obama coalition, from women about how hillary clinton is being covered, i thought he was making common cause with him and doing himself a a favor with that obama coalition that he's going to need should he want to mount a a credible campaign against hillary clinton. >> i would also point out that gender is an important issue for democrats. bernie sanders is someone who is learning the lessons as a presidential candidate about how important it is to talk about identity. he's someone who has worked his whole career to promote income ine equality issues. they want people to be about racial inequality. we see protesters coming out and wanting him to talk about it. >> he's also competing against the first woman who would be president. interesting dynamic. thank you both. donald trump, not unusual to have him at the center of a controversial debate.

breaking news on the first anniversary of michael brown's death as protests take an ugly ter turn. one incident involving plain clothes officers.

sara sider in has been on the ground. >> reporter: we got new information that two more people had been shot. one in the chest, the other in the arm and chest. that's where michael brown was shot and killed by police officer wilson who was cleared of any wrong doing. i can tell you that earlier in the night, there were two other shootings. this is a total of three so far shootings. two of those shootings happened along west where it started at two people shooting and police engaging and shooting one of the suspects. that suspect had a stolen .9 millimeter gun on him. i happen to be in the area when this was happening as protesters were coming and standing in front of a line of police. this happened hundreds of yards from where that protest was, but it happened right along where the unrest happened just one year ago to the day. here's what happened when i was

talking to the new interim police chief. >> we just want to be as patient as possible. >> reporter: everyone ran and took cover including the police. there is one person hurt. a police officer was hurt in a nonshooting-related incident hit with a brick. times have calmed down now. we'll wait and see for tomorrow when people say they are going to do a day of civil disobedien disobedience. >> sara sidner, thank you so much. we have mo ivory with us. i want to start with you. first, your reaction to one year later new unrest, new violence in ferguson, missouri. >> it made me very sad to see

that happen because prior to that it had been so peaceful and refreshing to see that there was a celebration going on to really celebrate that there has been some movement to come together and commemorate an incident that was so tragic. i just was on a panel this past weekend with attorney benjamin krump where we talked about solutions and what black lives matter really meant as a movement. so it was very sad to last night late i started seeing twitter and the coverage and i was saddened there was some fools, is what i call them, that had nothing to do with the protests to be out there doing this sort of thing. but i want to also say that we just have the police version of what went on last night. we do not have any information further than what is being told to us by police. we also have to keep an open mind as to what the true picture is about what's going on. >> and i want to ask you about police response, harry, specifically. you know the history of

ferguson. if you're a police officer there, you know all of your actions are going to be scrutinized, as we have seen unfold in the past year. and police in general around the country having actions scrutinized and situations that have probably come to the s surface that may not have otherwise if ferguson hadn't happened. so you're there and these protests are happening. as a police officer, what's your mind set in terms of going into that situation? >> you have to basically make sure it's peaceful. that's the bottom line there. we also have a gun violence problem in ferguson. as you have seen with this incident that occurred where police had a shooter, we're going to find out what happened here. but the perpetrator did have a weapon on him. the fact that officers returned fire and he was shot. let's not rush to conclusions that the police officers did anything wrong here. but the whole thing is you want a peaceful demonstration. this demonstration had been very peaceful. you're going to have some thugs that are going to try to disrupt it and try to start a riot.

that's what the police are trying to do is find those people and get them away from the majority of the demonstrators to make sure this stays peaceful. police officers have to take action. e we saw in baltimore where police officers were pummelled and did nothing. e we can't have that happen in ferguson. we have to make sure police officers act accordingly. >> there were two unmarked police cars damaged from gunfire. there were a couple officers reportedly pepper sprayed by protesters, one of them took a rock to the face. if you're a police officer there, do you feel like when you're look at these police officers, are their actions beginning to be criticized no matter what? >> there's a real reason why police officers' actions are going to be criticized. there's an awful history of excessive police brutality against african-americans in ferguson. for that matter, across the country. i don't think from a police officer side, just don't. don't use excessive force and

you won't be in that situation. there's a psychology of why we feel this way. it's just not pulled out of a hat. we want to think every officer is doing something wrong. we have a problem with police officers using excessive force. the ones doing the right thing don't have to be worried about video coming out or worried about their actions being scrutinized. it's the ones not doing the right thing, which is a large number that is creating a problem for the ones who are not. >> how do you breakthrough that and how do you balance ensuring safety with restraint as well. >> you can look at the incident with michael brown, where he was a criminal who tried to kill a police officer and as a result is dead. >> that's a real dram tieization. >> the facts indicate that. >> people do not believe that michael brown was a criminal.

>> the facts don't matter to you, but that is a fact. >> the officer was cleared, but the ferguson police department, however, was in the wrong. >> that's correct. >> in terms of the bigger picture. you both have a point here. but harry, finish your point. >> i read the report. there are some things wrong with that police department. there's no doubt. we have a new police chief. a new judge that was brought in. we still haven't seen too many changes in ferguson. so where is the money that's supposed to be coming from these politicians so police officers can have the resources to be able to utilize them in the city and put more cops on the street. the issue isn't that we need a black police chief or we need a black judge. all of a sudden things would be fine. it doesn't matter, as long as somebody is doing the correct job to make sure that police officers in the community come together so we can do away with

from americans who feel like their government isn't representing them. is it going to last? no, i don't think so. >> what i think is interesting hopefully donald trump is going to come on tomorrow. we'll talk to him about this, but i think that the reason i'm kind of brushing past this is i don't think this is the problem for the gop with women. we interviewed marco rubio. he is the one who says i'm about the future. his position on abortion is very strict. e he does not believe in a carve out for rape or insist. he talked about something in the interview that i think is much more important to addressing the party's relationship with women than what happened with trump. here it is. >> i'm proud to say my faith influences me. it teaches me that god knew us when he formed us in the womb. it does influence me to believe all human life is worthy of protection, even those who don't have a birth certificate, even human life that scientists wants to have a debate about.

the science is clear that when there is conception, that is a human life in the early stages of its total development and worthy of the protection of our laws. >> here's something interesting. what he said galvanized his support. had his team believes this interview did as much to help him as the debate itself did. what i was trying to address with him, he said i'm about the future, not the past. there's no scientific consensus on when we have a person for the purposes of attaching rights to the unborn. the idea that human life begins at conception, it's hard to argue against that. it's not human life at the beginning of conception. but that's not how the law works. when women hear marco rubio say i'm the future and don't believe in a carve out for rape or incest, how does that help with women? >> look, what you did was helped him in the primary of the republican party. you're making a very astute point about science. >> i've never been accused of

that before. >> he's making a totally different point that's going to help in the primary. you make a good point. 75% of americans last time polled in 2011 said they agree with the option of abortion in the case of rape and incest. that position does put him far outside the mainstream of the american public when it comes to the general election. >> but in fairness to marco rubio, he has never actually taken the point where he said i'm not going to vote against something if it has a rape and incest exception. he's saying he believes that the life should not have to pay the price for how they got there. i think a lot of people of faith understand that. and morally, the american people are very divide on abortion and these kinds of things. most people say pragmatically, rape and insist, it's hard to say you're going to force a woman to carry to term. he's not ed a advocating that.

on my faith i believe in life, but he's not doing anything legislatively to overturn a woman's right to make that decision. >> he can make the point that politics is the art of the possible. even though this is what i personally believe, here's what i will support legislatively. >> i don't know which way it will go, but a leader should want a scientific answer to that. we'll see where it goes from there. i thought it was an interesting as a future leader and that issue. appreciate it. as far as the donald trump scenar scenario, he will be here on "new day" tomorrow. he can explain for himself and tell you what he thinks matters and you can judge. a lot of news this morning. big stories to tell you about. what do you say, let's get to it. the one year anniversary of michael brown's death. gunshots ring out in the streets of ferguson.

>> this new video shows the shooter laying face down on the ground. he's now undergoing surgery. let's get the latest from sara sidner. you were interviewing the new chief when this happened. take us through it. >> reporter: that's right, he was talking about patience as we were talking to him trying to heal the community and suddenly as he's speaking, we hear the sound of gunshots ring out. gunshots ring out on the streets of ferguson on the one year an verse ri of michael brown's death. gunfire sent protesters and police running for cover. watch as this video captures another angle of the moment the shooting breaks out.

>> the suspect engages them with gunfire. they return fire from the inside of the van. >> reporter: officers were involved in heavy gunfire in two shootings sunday night. in one incident police say a suspect shot directly at plain clothes officers with a stolen .9 millimeter. >> there were four officers in that van . all four fired at the suspect and the suspect fell there. he is in critical, unstable condition. >> reporter: i captured gunshots on camera as i interviewed ferguson's interim police chief. angry protesters clashing with police hurling bottles and bricks at officers. police deploying tear gas. two businesses were damaged and luted. bullet holes in police cruisers caught in the cross fire. it followed a day of peaceful

vigils to remember brown's death and the movement it started. demonstrators observed silence, the amount of time he lay on the street. brown's killing sparked outrage and protests nationwide. though the officer was later cleared by both a grand jury and department of justice investigation, anger bubbled over. violence then mirroring violence now one year later. >> our thanks to sara sidner. we want to turn to the pastor of the ace of mind church of happiness. we spoke to you very frequently during those early days. pastor, thank you for joining us. i can imagine the words shots fired in ferguson after the day you had yesterday marking the first anniversary of michael brown's death. i'm sure that your heart sank. >> yeah, one thing we want to

say this morning is that we're not going to allow what 20 minutes of last night that happened, the violence that took place to earmark or to be the memory of the hard work and dedication that has taken place over the last 365 days. there's been too much work, there's been too much sacrifice and too much hard negotiation and change that has taken place in the city and the surrounding municipalities to allow those few moments to be the image of ferguson and st. louis right now. >> i hear that and respect that. you really feel that yesterday, the events of last night, the shootings, those were not a true sense of what is happening and the feeling in ferguson today? >> you guys have had had reporters here all week. you have seen the work that's going on behind the scenes. the ferguson commission, you have seen what the churches have done, the schools have done. in about an hour, we're going to

have our local schools that are going to open up for back to school. this city, even the brown family, yesterday they had marches, they had celebration, fundraisers, there's been so much hard work going on. we refuse to allow the least of us to represent all of us. so yes, there was violence, yes, there was unfortunate happenings, but the image of st. louis and ferguson is that change is on the horizon. we have to allow that change to take place. we look forward to what the social securit citizens have done in electing new board members. there's a lot of great things that are going on in this community. we have churches who have never been out in the community knocking on doors, serving their community at large. it's so much more greatness going on in the community that that's the image we want to portray. >> we have been watching the movement. we are watching the progress with you. i'm curious what your thoughts are about what needs to continue to happen?

it is momentum you talk about. what needs to continue to happen because the fact is, as i know you'll recognize, there's a problem of gun violence in the community. what are some of the steps you think need to be taken? >> well, the biggest thing is to allow the work that the local organizers are doing to continue to work and to allow the relationships that have been established to continue to grow. when you talk about gun violence, america is under siege from gun violence all across the country. gun violence from black on black crime, gun violence from police brutality, the guns are out of control in this country. we have to educate those who are carrying guns on when to use our constitutional right to carry, when to fire, when to use it for protection. what has to happen is the work done in the school systems where the education of the youth, the work that's been done in the community to help get jobs back into the community, the

restoration of the homes and businesses being restored, we just have to be patient. there has to be a message of patience because ferguson didn't happen overnight. mike brown's death sparked a movement, but this movement is years, decades in the making and those of white house understand history, we have to be patient and we have to let change take its course. >> leadership is so key. they have a leader in you. thank you so much for joining us this morning. thank you for your good words. >> thank you for having us this morning. donald trump insisting he has no issues with women. in fact, he says he cherishes them. the republican front runner is under new criticism this morning for what many consider a crude, over the top comment about fox moderator megyn kelly. let's get the latest from athena jones in washington. one thing that's consistent is donald trump continues to dominate the political discussion. >> good morning, another week,

another controversy with donald trump at the center. he's offended hispanic immigrants, veterans, and all of this without hurting his standing in the polls. the question now is whether these latest remarks will do any lasting damage to his candidacy, particularly with women. >> reporter: donald trump on the offensive. >> i said nothing wrong whatsoever. >> reporter: the latest controversy surrounding the billionaire erupted after he said this about fox anchor maine. begin kelly, one of the moderators of thursday's debate, to cnn's don lemon. >> she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions. you can see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. >> reporter: trump was upset with unfair questioning from her during the republican primary debate. >> you have called women you don't like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals. >> reporter: the gop front runner appeared on four sunday

shows to defend himself, including cnn's "state of the union" saying he never intended to suggest kelly was having her period as many interpreted her comment. >> i was going to say nose and ears, because that's a common statement. it's a statement showing anger. do you think i would make a stupid statement like that? only a sick person would even think about it. >> reporter: in a sign of growing concern in some gop corners, he was disinvited from a republican gathering over the weekend after the comments about kel kelly. many but not all of trump's rivals criticized the remarks. >> do we want to insult 53% of all voters? what donald trump said is wrong. >> they were completely inappropriate and offensive comments, period. >> a comment that drew fire from trump on sunday when he tweeted if you listen to carly fiorina for more than ten minutes

million-dollar question. the white house has expressed confidence repeatedly not necessarily that it won't be a vote of disapproval by congress, but that the white house still has those votes to sustain a presidential veto. so the president is on vacation here or trying to be. but there's been a lot going on. on the one hand you have groups stro strongly opposed to the deal spending literally tens of millions of dollars buying ads and lobbying against it. you have all these members of congress going to israel on a visit funded by the charitable arm of a group staunchly opposed to it. they are visiting with prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who may be the most vocally opposed person to the deal in the world. the white house has been trying to match that effort on their own. they have been holding briefings, some classified between the president and members of congress. while the president is here, the white house said there might be a phone call or two, but don't expect that same intensity of outreach. that could be an indication they know they have the votes and they have that level of

confidence. the president has been giving interviews before he went on vacation here. the interviews are coming out now. he doesn't back away from the criticism of his opponents that some saw as pretty harsh. he's explaining it and reenforcing it. >> thank you for that. it is a new phase in the war against isis. the u.s. sending in new resources to fight the terror group. six fighter jets now on the ground at an air force base in turkey to support the u.s. coalition against the terrorists in syria. let's bring in barbara starr live in washington for us. >> good morning, the planes now if in southern turkey at ready to strike targets inside northern syria. six f-16s, about 300 military personnel to support them out of a fighter squadron in italy.

involving donald trump, some of them involving other candidates. i think we're hyped about it, but it's too early to make definitive judgments until we get really right on top of the primary season and then into the general election. >> it's never too early to hold you accountable for what you say, but we'll let mr. trump say what he meant and didn't mean. but the party in general, marco rubio says he's the candidate of the future. he's not for a rape or insist carve out. you know from being with ronald reagan, who had a stiff position on this issue, that's a rare position. and he was resistant to the idea of forming a consensus as to when we do have a person in the place of the unborn and says it's at conception. do you think those positions raise a a real challenge for courting women in this election? >> i don't. i'll tell you why. i have been hearing this argument for decades. i heard it when ronald reagan

was running for president and he won in two landslides. i just really think that other issues -- i'm on here with paul and i don't have to remind paul of that famous phrase "it's the economy, stupid." the economy may well be the lead issue, it generally is. abortion will play a much smaller role in had this. >> on your side, paul, you have an opposite problem. your front runner is a woman. from the beginning, it's been assumed that women are going to vote for her because she represents the first. do you think that that is enough in the analysis of why she gets the woman's vote? >> absolutely not. that's really important. this is a critical difference in the way hillary is running. i do think the last time she ran the campaign gave a sense of entitlement and senator obama came and beat her. this time she's very interested in trying to earn and deserve every single vote, especially from women like herself.

especially women who have been working moms like she was when i first met her. today according to "new york times," she's going to go out and propose how to change how we pay for college so that more middle class kids can go to college without being crushed by debt. but at the same time, republicans all opposed tough new laws to protect women on equal pay. they opposed that. now they want to defund contraception, which is written into the law in 1970 by a congressman from houston named george bush. >> by defunding planned parenthood? >> and title x entirely. it was actually co-sponsored by george bush of texas. it helps protect their lives and their health. it's a great thing that the government does. republicans want to end that. those kinds of issues, i think, are going to be very important in the fall. >> what do you think?

is the party up against it when it comes to doing the things you need to do to make women want to vote for you? >> no, i don't think so. when i listen to what paul was just saying, it occurs to me we're almost $19 trillion in debt. years ago i worked for a congressman on the budget committee. you get into arguments where everybody agrees we need to cut spending and do those kind of things to preserve the future for our kids and yet on the other hand, they don't want to cut this program and that program. this is the beginning o of that kind of discussion and it's going to involve issues across the board. i think the economy is about the future. i think that's going to be very important for women as well as every other voter. >> we know that the cnn had a poll up there. what do women care about most? the economy, they are working, raising families, sometimes doing both alone.

but there's selectivity in that. so paul cares about the economy. but they may care about different things within it. paul is highlighting issues that may matter to women within economic standpoints and title x could be folded into that even though it's about the extension of privacy rights about your reproductive rights, but you have to indicacater to each spe interest group. >> to some degree that may be true. we have been talking about carly fiorina here this morning. she's surging. carly fiorina, if she's on the ticket, it's going to be hard to say that it's an anti-woman -- >> just because she's a woman? that's what i was saying. is being a woman enough to say i'm for women? >> well, it's more than enough to say that -- to not say they

are anti-women. i heard this argument before. i must say as a conservative, what happens here is i always hear my democratic friends say you need to have diversity. you need to have more minorities. we have two latinos in this race. if we had a ticket of carly fiorina and marco rubio, suddenly i'm sure we would be hearing all sorts of things that they are not really representing women or latinos. so there's a game here that gets played with all this kind of thing. i think we have to realize it and i think stick with these issues and stick with the economy and i think that's what carries the day. and again, this card was played against ronald reagan and he won in a landslide. >> the more we hear about what they will do, the more we'll be able to assess it. thank you both. nice tie, red and blue. >> trying to bring people together. >> thank you very much.

happened. i wanted to let you look at what happened in the very first shooting, the one that kicked off some of the violence. >> you're seeing a shot here and hearing the sounds of gunshots. you can see people scattering trying to get. anywhere so they are out of the way of the bullets. police say that shooting was between two people who started firing at one another. i want to show you another angle of that. i happen to be there on my cell phone talking to the interim police chief who was new to town and new to ferguson. i want to show you that video as well from a different angle. he himself very caught off guard and surprised when the shooting started. >> e with just want to be as patient as possible. >> those were many rounds. and lastly, there was someone who was shot and very badly

injured, but shot, police say, by police because he was fleeing police and was also armed. police also say he shot towards them hitting a police vehicle. two undercover vehicles got hit with gunfire. this is very graphic video. we want to warn you about that. the graphic video taken by someone who was on twitter here taking pictures of police as they stand over the body of the man who was shot. that man taken to the hospital. police say he is in unstable, critical condition at this time. >> thank you very much. let's get to "inside politics" with john king. you have trump in the center. >> larger discussion about the frustration with politicians. looking forward to your conversation when he joins "new

day" tomorrow morning. he's continuing the conversation today as we go inside politics. just finished an interview in which he said he did not -- he said megyn kelly had blood coming out of her eyes and wherever. he said it would be classless and over the line for anyone to suggest a woman was having her period. that continuing a theme e he had as he made the rounds of the sunday shows, listen. >> do you think i would make a stupid statement like that? only a sick person would even think about it. i was going to say nose and/ears because that's a very common statement. blood pouring out of someone's nose. i cherish women. i want to help women. i'm going to do things for women that no other candidate will be able to do. >> i'm not sure blood coming out of your nose and ears is a common statement. i've been in this business

awhile. but let's just focus on the point that he comes into the debate as the national front runner leading in the polls. he's leading in new hampshire. everybody keeps saying he's going to be hurt eventually by this. i'm not so sure. >> it's not clear he's going to be, but at some point we have to ask is he going to pivot and start talking about the economy and other things. that's what the frustration going on inside his camp with his advisers. they wanted him to use the debate as an opportunity to grow a little bit and move into the next phase. it didn't happen in the debate. it hasn't happened over the weekend. that's still the challenge facing his campaign. there are going to be a rolling out policy papers. they are hiring operatives in iowa and other states. but the challenge for donald trump is can he stop talking about it. in all fairness, we're asking him about it, but can he stop

talking about this. >> he was just asked on "today." there are no detailed policy papers. instead of saying they are coming, he said 24 million people watched that debate. i'm a ratings king. he likes to talk about himself. how does he pivot? what does he need to do? >> first of all, he has to stop doubling down on the remarks he made about megyn kelly that we're all talking about now. he keeps getting into explaining mode. roll out some serious policies. go to an early primary state and give reporters something else to talk about. something else to e see rather than donald trump has not managed to prove there's much more there than the guy who can have this entertaining persona, but he hasn't shown there's much past this yet. >> but roughly a quarter of the republican voters say they want that guy. they want who is going to break all the glass. carly fiorina, who was in the

earlier debate, she's the only woman running for the republican nomination. she was on "state of the union" yesterday and donald trump is saying i didn't mean that. carly fiorina says i don't buy it. >> the point is women understood that comment. yes, it is offensive. i started out as a secretary. and as i made my way up in the business world, a male-dominated business world, i have had lots of men imply that i was unfit for decision making because maybe i was having my period. so i'll say it. >> donald trump a couple hours after that interview tweeted out i just realized if you listen to carly fiorina for more than ten minutes, you develop a headache. she has zero chance. this is the part -- let it go. welcome to politics. people criticize you. >> he can't help himself. he wants this to be the sound track of his campaign, which is he will be a laughing stock at some point.

a lot of people might be. laughing. but that's not how you elect a president. it's unclear to me if he wants to transition and become a serious candidate, sending a tweet like that is not the sign of a serious person. it's entertaining if you're into that kind of humor, but i'm not sure that it's that productive. >> life is the fifth grade and donald trump is helping me prove my point every day. i want to get to this quickly. bernie sanders has been drawing huge crowds. 28,000 people on the west coast in portland. 15,000 people estimated in seattle the night before that. huge crowds for bernie sanders on the road. he also did "face the nation" yesterday. it was teed up for him to go after hillary clinton. listen to bernie sanders. he says he thinks some of the attacks are sexist and defends her. >> i have known hillary clinton for 25 years. i admire her. i respect her. i like her. she and i have very different points of view on a number of

tough? >> well, first of all, it was a debate to find out what did these candidates have to move this country along. i don't care about somebody's personal life. and i didn't like what she asked. i think they set him up for the first question and this whole debate was a set up against donald trump. it was an establishment against this man who is the only one who has come out and is talking about the issues. this is what the country wants is for people to talk about the issues. >> some are going to say there's been a fair amount of criticism against your candidate for not talking substantively enough about those issues. he will say things, but not have the policy to back them up. >> the debate on fox, mr. trump

was not the only. candidate that was minimal liezed or attacked and made to not have a fair shake. i don't think that that debate was worthy to be honest with you. >> fortunately, there will be several others that we'll have going forward. to the point about pushing candidates on their stance, it is the moderator's job to push and to ask these tough questions. people are saying -- some people are asking, is this the way we want to see this man who is running to be the president of the united states, he's going to receive tough questioning from president putin of russia. how is he going to handle himself as a president? >> we both agree he can handle this. he's a businessman. he goes into negotiations all the time. e he comes out with contracts

that best fits his business. he's going to negotiate in our best interest. look at what we have in the white house right now. he's not doing anything in the best interest of this kocountry. i believe strongly that mr. trump will bring this country to where it needs to be and he's going to make this country better for all of us. susan and i agree on this 100% here. tough questions are fine. >> tough questions are fine, but honestly, when there's a nastiness to them and an attitude that goes along with them, that's another can of worms. i welcome tough questions, but not with an attitude. >> when you put these tough questions, all these candidates get asked these tough questions, but can they deliver. mr. trump is the man that can deliver because we see how he runs his corporations.

good morning welcome to "new day." it's monday, august 10. 8:00 in the east. we have breaking news overnight. multiple shootings on the first anniversary of michael brown's death in ferguson, missouri. there was peaceful protests all day long, but there were also three rounds of gunfire late into the night. one shooting breaking out with protesters running for cover. take a listen. [ gunshots fired ] >> another shooting involving plain clothes officers happening after police say they came under heavy fire. new video that some might find disturbing shows a gunman laying on the ground after being shot by police. he's in critical condition. we get the latest from sara saunders. she's been on the scene all night. she witnessed the gunfire. >> reporter: there were three shootings, as you mention ed.

we were there for all three. the first one a ringing out sometime after about 11 p.m. as protesters and police were facing off, but this happened a couple hundred yards away from where the protests were. gunshots ring out on the streets of ferguson on the one year anniversary of michael brown's death. erupting into chaos overnight when gunfire sent protesters and police running for cover. watch as this video captures another angle of the moment the shooting breaks out. >> the suspect engages them with gunfire. the plain clothes detectives returned fire from theed in of the van. >> st. louis county police say officers were involved in heavy gunfire in two shootings sunday night. in one incident, police say a suspect shot directly at plain clothes officers with the stolen nine millimeter. >> there were four officers in

that van. all four fired at the suspect and the suspect fell there. >> i captured gunshots on camera as i interviewed ferguso's interim police chief. [ gunfire shots ] this graphic video posted on twitter shows a man who is shot while fleeing police. police say he had fired at them. police also say a stolen handgun was found on the scene. >> get some help, man. >> reporter: angry protesters clashing with police. hurling bottles and bricks at officers. police deploying tear gas to disperse the crowds. two businesses were damaged and looted. these images capture bullet holes and unmarked police cruisers caught in the cross fire. following a day of peaceful vigils to remember brown's death and the movement it started. demonstrators marched and observed four and a half minutes

of silence. one minute for every hour that brown's body lay on the street after he was shot. brown's killing by a white officer sparked outrage and protests nationwide. though the officer was later cleared by both a grand jury and the department of justice investigation. anger bubbled over violence then mirroring violence now. one year later. that violence, at this point, according to police, not linked with the protests. police saying they are criminals, of course, they're alleged criminals. we don't know exactly who this person is who has been shot. we know that he is in unstable but critical condition. back to you guys. >> sara, appreciate the reporting. be safe there. let's bring in chris king. the editorial director for the "st. louis american." the big concern it's just like a year ago. do you think that's a fair representation? >> reporter: no, it's different than a year ago.

ferguson started a national movement devoted to rectifying the desperate impact of law enforcement on african-americans, and this incident of what seems to be street violence on the fringes of a protest doesn't change the fact that there's a national movement. >> from the people to the policies, what has changed, in your opinion, as you're there in the community. have you seen changes within the police or new things being budgeted, are there jobs, programs, the infrastructure surrounding the social needs? where is the progress? >> well, ferguson police department has to work out a consent agreement with the department of justice. until we see then they're not doing anything meaningful. there has been inking of municipal court reform. one of the problems in st. louis county is the small municipalities that use the police forms as armed tax

collectors. there was a bill passed that the chief and the protesters out last night testified for was passed. that will make it more difficult for nmunicipalities to basicall use their cops as armed tax collectors. >> and armed tax collectors, what does that mean, chris? that's an incendiary statement. >> that's what the department of justice concluded. what the department of justice report e revealed was e-mails between the police chief and the city manager and the court administrator basically saying, chief, we need more tickets and we need more money. and the chief saying, i'll write the guys. and the ferguson cops are doing competitive ticketing. they were competing to see to get the most tickets out of one traffic stop. >> that's the report. they have to fix it. there are a lot of issues that wound up reflecting around the country about the needs for jobs, education, infrastructure. do you see the kind of infrastructure being put in place to make a meaningful

difference? you've had a year now. >> no. not yet. it's a long way to go. i mean, this is centuries in the making. if you think about it, law enforcement, abuses of african-americans is actually older than freedom, i mean, the slave patrols were the first police officers, and we have a long way to go to rectify the way the police do their business in african-american communities. now the poverty sub straight that accounts for street violence we saw last night and anger at the police. that's a separate issue all together. and the state will, i think, set new priorities after the ferguson commission issues the report next month. >> obviously you know we revisit these stories on anniversaries to give a sense of time lapse and hopefully progresses on the issues concern. what is your message one year out? >> we have a national movement where young african-americans stood up for something important to them and it should be

important to anyone. if you think about it, police are a government service. our constitution tells us a government service cannot have a impact by demographic. if police are policing african-americans differently than others, that's unacceptable by our constitution. the washington post report had it seven times more likely for an unarmed african-american to be killed by a police officer than an unarmed white person. that's unacceptable. it's an important movement with a good goal. >> it's unacceptable to more than just young black people as well. so you a lot of people not just protesting but trying to make change around the country, including in many police forces. thank you very much, chris king. keep us informed of what is going on there. appreciate having you on the show. on the heels of the new unrest in ferguson, we want to take you to texas where the fbi is investigating yet another shooting of an unarmed black teenager. christian taylor was killed in

arlington shot by an officer in training. this is some newly released edited surveillance video showing the moments leading up to taylor's death. you see him there in the lot stomping on one of the cars in the car dealership lot. we are in arlington with the latest. now the fbi is involved. why? >> reporter: this is a request made by the articleton police department. they know full well that this shooting will be intensely scrutinized in the coming days and weeks. this all started to unfold around 1:00 friday morning when police say christian taylor drove up to the car dealership in south arlington and started walking around and acting erratically. at least that's what the video shows. walking through the car dealership and walking on cars and smashing windows. he drove a joop into a showroom

floor. two police officers including 49-year-old rookie brad miller. police will say there was a altercation they won't say if it is physical or verbal. christian thaylor was told toly on the ground and he didn't and four shots were fired by officer miller and taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. it's the moments of the altercation police say will be the most important part as they investigate to figure out whether it was a justifying shooting. >> we'll watch the story along with you. in other news donald trump's opponents believe the republican frontrunner is on the ropes for many what consider a crude comment he made about megyn kelly. trump insisting he doesn't have issues with women. he claims he cherishes women. for more on the turmoil surrounding the trump campaign, let's bring in cnn's athena jones in washington. >> reporter: hey.

was killed. he's the second firefighter to die in the line of duty in less than two weeks. late last month dave ruhl was killed. investigators investigating several drone sightings. pilots from at least four commercial flights reported seeing drones sunday as they were making their final approach to the airport. turning to cnn correspondent live in washington with the latest. what a concern and several times it happened. >> reporter: absolutely. this morning the faa said it has seen a significant increase in pilot reports of drones near airports around the country. it happened again yesterday in new jersey. just listen as multiple pilots call in drone sightings.

>> reporter: all right. air traffic controller warning all of those pilots. none of the flights had to take evasive action and all landed safely. even a small hobby type drone can be very dangerous. the faa says it can take on an engine of a passenger plane midair, can even cause damage to some other part of the plane. we saw what geese can do to the planes and the engines with the miracle on the hudson. forced to make an emergency landing on the hudson. this morning the faa said drones are just as dangerous. they're investigating the latest incident and warning for you are caught, you could be hit up with fines with up to $25,000 as well as criminal charges.

questioning me. we almost have to be sick to put that together. >> okay. now that's what he said. that's how he defended it. and now, also, this goes to a bigger point that he was making which is about why he thinks that the mod raters were coming after him. listen to that. literally it's two seconds in brett baier gets up and starts saying about raising the hand about third party stuff. i'm saying i can't believe it. we haven't even gotten to the lecterns yet and they're doing that. that was number one, which people forget about. it was totally inappropriate. the whole question was aimed at me. then megyn gets up and starts talki ing beginningerish. the question was a very unfair one. >> let me push it back on him. the latest nbc interview.

let's bring in political commentat commentator. let's take him at his word. what is your take? >> for a guy who constantly seeks attention and wants everyone talking about him and him alone, to suddenly get offended and start whining that all the attention was on him at this debate and that a question was designed specifically with him in mind is pretty preposterous. i think we saw a side of donald trump both at the debate and in the days following that makes it pretty clear he's not, you know, the leader he has proported, you know, to be if he were to win the presidency. >> is he also a little bit of the victim. there's no secret that the gop doesn't cotton to him at this point. they have to deal with what he's tapping into. and they did -- he said, you know, they didn't ask me the

same kinds of questions they asked everybody else. i personally don't like the way megyn kelly is asking him. that's what is his right. politicians don't usually attack the questioner. does he have a point? >> when i was watching the debate and i was watching it start to finish. i had to go on television after and i thought the first question about the names he's called women. when chris christie gets a question on new jersey's economy next seemed a little silly. donald trump doesn't have a record. donald trump is not a politician. it's his best asset. there's not lot for people to ask donald trump except for about the things that he has said, you know, things he's said in the past. so i thought it was a very kind of a lame question, but he did get some more substantiative questions later on in the debate, and look, i mean, this is what he's got to look forward to for as long as he's going to be in this. no one is going to be asking him

about his vote on the iraq war. i mean, he just doesn't have the kind of record that other politicians have coming into the election. >> what is the -- >> honestly, i think for conservatives who were understandably looking for a nontraditional kind of candidate and might have been intrigued by donald trump, i think they have seen through the debate, through the moments after that he's probably not the answer. trump supporters don't ever seem to be bothered by the crazy things he says. even the things that make him look not very conservative. i imagine he'll still maintain some support, but i think he'll get a bit of a dip in the polls from this incident. >> and s.e. you have been making a direct point. he doesn't line up as a conservative conservative when you look at his positions. he's tapping into the anger that certainly is owned in part by that base. they have a little bit of a choice.

this guy makes me feel the right way, but will he do the right things? you think that is starting to move along and maybe it's time when donald trump comes on tomorrow maybe it's time to start asks him what are you doing for these people other than voice anger. fair? >> completely fair. look, donald trump obviously has tapped into some anger. he's correctly identified illegal immigration among others as a problem. he didn't invent that problem. he's not the first to discuss illegal immigration or any of these other issues that conservatives want him to talk about. but it's the way he talks about it and the solutions that he offers that should have conservatives really thinking twice before following him down the rabbit hole. >> let's bring in anna navarro in. good to have you. the other thing that happened at the debate and in our interview afterwards, i think that may mean more to women, right, that's what they're hitting trump over the head with.

you insulted women, this is why the gop can't get more women under the tank because stupid stuff like this. marco rubio said on his position on abortions there are no carve outs for rape or incest. he said i'm not for it. i want your take on what else he said. >> i'm proud to say my faith influences me. it teaches me that god knew us when he formed us in the womb. all human life is worthy of protection. but i think the science is clear that when a child -- when there is conception, that's a human life in the early stages of the total development and worthy the protection of our laws. >> two different things. one, from the moment of conception you have human life. tough to argue with. the law asks when do you have a person in order to attach rights? that was the point of back and forth. he says science is clear that

happens at conception. that's not true. we don't have scientific c consens consensus. the feds passed their own law about the rights much unborn. this is not a clear question. he's supposed to be the future of the party. how do you think it helps or hurts with women? >> i think he's being incredibly truthful and honest as to where he is on this. he's saying -- i've known marco rubio now for 20 years. we grew up together in republican politics in miami. he's a friend of mine. marco is a man who lives his faith. he's a very ardent catholic. i think he's answering the question from his heart and he's being truthful that is formed by his faith. he believes it starts at conception and he believes life needs to be protected from that moment on. whether it fits or not into scientific argument that somebody may have or not is different as to whether he's

answering it honestly or not. i think marco is answering it honestly. this is a guy that lives and practices his religion. >> there's no reason to question his honesty. if he wants to be the leader of the future, why wouldn't he grabbed on to the idea of getting a scientific consensus. we do it for global warming and other things. why not for a question that matters. what is going on with planned parenthood and what is going on with reproductive rights. why wouldn't you want to know? for a pro life position, it will probably benefit you. >> i think honestly i think he believes, and i think he's right, that most americans would rather thereon him, are more comfortable listening to him talk about unborn babies than they are planned parenthood. i think the democratic party has moved so far to the left on this issue. removing language like "legal, safe, and rare" from their charter. putting up wendy davis on a pro

abortion platform is out of touch with where the country is. i don't think marco rubio feels like he has to be held to a scientific standard. he can talk about his faith and his position on abortion because he knows that a majority of people in this country believe there should be more restrictions on abortions not fewer. believe in the born alive acts. believe that abortion after 20 weeks should be illegal. he knows he has the consensus of a majority of americans with him and not to the democratic party. >> interesting. so for him it's not about vetting he feels it. it's a function of his faith. >> sure. >> the question is what happens if he makes it through the primary and obviously we wish every candidate the best and gets to the general where a lot of these decisions are not made on the basis of solely faith. anna, thank you very much. s.e. appreciate the perspective. rocks, bottle, and bullets. on the first anniversary of michael brown's death in

ferguson, missouri during demonstrations marking one year since michael brown was killed by officer darren wilson. three different shootings broke out after the peaceful protest turned into chaos. one of the shootings involved police officers. we want to talk more about this issue with charles below cnn's political commentator and with us retired sergeant cheryl dorsey. charles, i want to start with you. you hear about the violence in ferguson and it's like again? really? a year later we're supposed to be talking about progress, and yet it seems like the violence is really undermining or undercutting the message and the movement started in ferguson to begin with. >> both yes and no. there is violence and it did happen. however, both the protesters and the statement from the police separate this particular violence from the protest that proceeded it. you had hours and hours and even

days because the protesting demonstrating started before yesterday. days of protests that had no violence associated with it whatsoever. i think so you to separate this 20 minutes from two days of commemoration and protests. i think that's only fair. i'm old enough to have seen enough protests in my life to know that you will have fringe elements who will show up and exploit actual protests. people who start -- the people who start are protest are not necessarily people who end it. >> yet, there was a greater violence that did end up happening. there wasn't just the individual who was shot, but there were police officers who were attacked, there were police cars that were damaged. >> but the police themselves say this was separate from the -- >> i hear what you're saying, too. >> i take them at their word on this. >> i agree with you on that regard. but you do have a mentality out there that it seems to be us

against them. especially when you hear some of the chants that at least a group of protesters were saying out there. i want do you listen to this and then, cheryl, i'm going to ask you a question. listen. >> of those who are -- [ gunfire erupting ] >> i'm not sure if that's the right sound we were going to play. what we heard were we're ready for what? we're ready for war. that was the chant. cheryl, as a police officer if you're hearing that sort of an attitude, i imagine you have your guard up. the task is on you to respond withoutoverreacting or fuelling the fire. we have the sound. i want to play it and get your reaction. [ chanting ] ready for war. >> what do you do when you hear that, cheryl? >> you know, we're the

professionals. so we understand -- i understand that when i hear remarks like that, i don't take it personal. they're not wanting to go to war with me. i think what we're starting to see it's been over a year now. we're starting to tick off anniversaries of young men who have been kill at the hands of police officers, and i think they're frustrated. i think we're tired of seeing department chiefs circle the wagons, minimize and mitigate bad behavior. people want accountability. people want there to be a consequence for the choice thatter rathat that errant officers make. >> let's talk about the change that has happen there had, charles. we know there's a new interim police chief who is african-american, a new judge that has taken over the court reforms. yet some point out that these people are temporary because there's the interim word before their titles. do you see progress? >> well, i think when you look at the second justice department report and you saw systemic wide

spread racial bias across the justice system in ferguson starting with police, but also going into the judicial part of the system. any progress from that -- you know, these are the first steps in that and try to untangle that web of complexity, but any progress from that is progress. does it get you to where you want to be ultimately? maybe not. people in ferguson have to live under that system of oppression. that's their experience. they're going to be frustrated by that, and, you know, that's what you're seeing in the street. to have had that, you know, be crystallized by the justice department and put on paper so it is not just somethingiv just feeling. you were after me. that is going to elevate the frustration. so i understand that. i believe that is -- those are steps toward the right

direction. i believe it helps us as america to understand that american police departments, whole police departments are sometimes used by local municipalities to help fill in budget gaps. that means a systemic problem. so even if you are living comfortably far away from where the violent areas are, the fact they're not asking you to increase their taxes they're going to make the money somewhere else. so everybody's hand has blood on it in these situations. >> there's an increased i are air wa awareness covering the stories. the ferguson situation exposed. is patience the name of the game here? is it too much to expect immediate changes? >> well, i think what we need to do is we need to see some action behind the words. so unless and until police officers are held accountable for the actions they take, it

will feel like daysha view. unless and until police officers are found guilty, are convicted and held personally responsible, i think you're going still see this a kind of frustration. and we just heard a week ago where darren wilson basically suggested that mike brown deserve what he received. there has to be some accountability. >> when you look at, too, the debates even the other night, charles, and one question regarding this issue was posed to the gop candidates, and one person answered the issue. does that speak to people still not taking this issue as seriously as they should? >> i think in general not taking it as series ous as they could. even the answer to the question fell flat. it focussed almost exclues live own the police behavior itself. rather than looking at the entire system that forms the police behavior. we have to step back and say it's not just about police

interactions with individual people. this is not just about whether or not that police officer has a bias and he's exercising it on that individual person. but this entire system hasn't been incentivized to create the environment where you have more interactions between officers and people of color and when you have that increased number of interactions you're going to have an increased number of bad outcomes. and until we as a whole society step back and say this is not just these two people. this is us. we are doing this. we are incentivizing this. we have set up a system that allows this sort of thing to happen and to increase. we are the panel to blame here. >> i hear you. thank you to you for joining us. we appreciate the conversation. thank you very much. good to have that important conversation. now back to what is dominating the political headlines. do you think donald trump meant to say something ugly and

do you think it is fair? >> donald trump does not need me to defend him. i have to give my opinion in this situation, because he said very clearly that was not his intensions. you have to know that donald trump is straight shooter. and when people say because of his beef with kelly he has an issue with all women, i think it's absolutely ridiculous. i think we're cherry picking right now, and there's something he's connecting with. that's why he's leading in the poll. >> i don't think that -- don't diminish your opinion. we need your opinion as a woman because especially you know him in a different way than so many other people do. it's not just the megyn kelly thing, omarosa. we had the lawyer here that he apparently called disgusting when she asked to leave to breastfeed or to breast pump for her breastfeeding child. he's used words like "fat pig" to describe rosie o'donnell and dogs and slobs to describe other

women. how do you categorize what he says? >> donald trump has done something that i think most politicians should take note of. he tells it like it is. i'm not talking about just the megyn kelly situation. when he feels something, he expresses that. and the voters are connecting with him because he's authentic. you have worked out here in l.a. if everybody went through everybody you said in your entire career and nitpicked the things they didn't like, there would be things -- >> of course. but words matter. >> absolutely. jeb bush described himself as a tortuous. i don't know that i want a tortoise to be the president of the united states. we have a situation where the voters are connecting because he's authentic. what i think is happening is republican party is moving the goal post every time donald trump does something new. they move it forward and back.

it's difficult for him to gain ground. people may find it a little unusual for a democrat like myself to be defending him. i think somebody has to speak up and say this is ridiculous. >> he's not a misogynist. you don't believe his stabilities about specific women are an open interpretation of how he feels about all women. do you think where he is involved with the fox moderator, do you believe he has a legitimate gripe? do you think she was coming after him? >> chris, let me take one question at a time. you have lived in new york probably most of your life. you know trump as a true new yorker. one of the things new yorkers pride themselves on is bold and brash. a lot is his personality growing up and workin in a town that is tough. in terms of missong knee trump tells it like it is. if you said, chris, something he didn't like he would call you out. does that mean he has a war on

men? does that mean he doesn't like men? he calls it out one by one. >> if he's tough -- i don't know what that word means. it depends on how you apply. he's taken it very hard for such a tough guy he seems to be offended. >> he can dish it but can he take it? >> come on. i think because you have created this caricature of donald trump he's a super human that doesn't have feelings. he's a human being at the end of the day. when he expresses any type of emotion, the first idea he's weak. i don't think he's being weak or thin skinned. i think her questions were absolutely personal. she really wanted to know his positions on women's issues. she would have asked him a policy question instead she asked him something equivalent to what a tabloid journalist would have asked him. that doesn't give him fair footing with the other candidates on that stage. >> omarosa, we'll have to leave
