i want to bring in deb feyerick. we know this officer was patrolling, came upon three suspicious suspects, he was pursuing them and that was the last his colleagues heard of him, right, deb? >> that's right, brianna. it happened about 8:00 this morning, that appears that there was reason for this police officer to begin pursuing these three individuals. he was on foot as you mentioned and was chasing the three individuals when it appears he radioed in for help for backup. that's when the radio went dead and it appears one of the individuals turned an perhaps shot him. the three individuals are believed to be armed. they were on foot but it's not clear whether they had a vehicle nearby. it's not even clear as to why this officer alone began chasing
10:01 am
these three men and all of that clearly under consideration and under investigation. but we do know the sheriffs are involved. the atf is involved. you have local police. this is a community and everybody has been warned to stay indoors. you've got canines that are being used which does indicate that at least they do have some belief, authorities, that, in fact, these three men are on foot. there's also air surveillance, you can see the helicopter looking for these three men. whether they stay together, whether they split up, that will clearly complicate the search. but now a big manhunt under way. three suspects, two of them described as white. another male, african-american. >> stay with us, tom fen toesue joining us on the phone. at this point authorities are
10:02 am
not saying anything about the condition of this police officer shot and injured and discovered by other police officers. is but we know he was on the radio pursuing these three suspects and communications were lost. knowing that what do you think we're looking at here? >> okay, i think the most important thing, brianna, is whether or not the officer when asking for backup was able to give an accurate description of any or all of the three as he was pursuing them or what led to why he was actually interested in them in the first place. so we don't know if they had already come up with intelligence or what. is we're hoping to find out shortly with the police press conference. >> is that something he may have radioed? some sort of description or some sort of prescription of their behavior that gave him cause to
10:03 am
be in pursuit and perhaps police are just waiting to release that information? >> i think so. the fact he asked for backup, he probably gave some information as to why he was asking for a backup and who he was asking -- you know, who he was interested in, who are the suspicious people he was looking at. i think hopefully the police will have some more information about that at some point so they can put out a description of the people involved in this. >> this is a suburb, obviously and you can see in the pictures there are school buses. as we see the search under way with emergency vehicles we see helicopters there, we know canines are involved here. what really is the process here in this manhunt looking for these suspects? >> well, i think just get as many officers as they can into that area and try to look for the people and, like i said, we
10:04 am
hope there's enough of a description that they know what they're looking for. i'm not sure how the dogs would be able to determine what scent to follow in that situation but s if they bring canine units out there but the question is going to be what kind of description? was he on some kind of surveillance? did he have some indication [ inaudible ] in progress, let's say. >> we are losing tom there. tom, stay with me, we'll try to make sure we get a better connection with you but i want to bring deb feyerick back in. deb, this is a suburb. this is where a lot of people live. there are a lot of families there. we understand that some of the schools in the area are on lockdown at this point. there are local reports that we verified, gavin school district said it's on soft lockdown status. there are other schools in nearby suburbs that are on lockdown status as well. do we know anything about what
10:05 am
officials are telling people in this area to be cautious about, to be on the lookout for? >> well, look, one of the most important things both for the people who are in that neighborhood but also law enforce system to make sure any bystander is safe and inside that's why it's safer for children. safer for people on the roads to basically get to an area where they can shelter in place. that that's critical for their saferty but also because law enforcement doesn't know where these three individuals are going. they don't know where they're headed. they began on foot, that much we do know. but it's unclear whether they may have picked up a car, a vehicle, and may be now on the road. so what began as a contained or smaller area may grow exponentially larger if, in fact, they do have some sort of vehicle and have managed to hit the highway. right now you have a lot of authorities, the sheriff, this is being headed up by the lake
10:06 am
county major crime task force, this investigation. you've got members of different federal agencies that are also involved in this manhunt. it does not -- it's unclear actually as to what started this whole incident. it appears that the police officer may have had reason to stop these individuals or approach these individuals and then all of a sudden all we know is that the officer began chasing them. he radioed in for help and that is the last that authorities are saying they heard from this particular officer. so whether the individuals turned and opened fire, not clear. but, again, these individuals are considered armed, they're considered dangerous, and the big thing that authorities want is to make sure there are no more victims. that's why everybody is being told to stay inside, to shelter in place, and just right now it's a state of lockdown. >> deb, stay with us. we want to look at sound we just
10:07 am
got in a short time ago. we heard some more details from the lake county, illinois, sheriff which is handling this case at this point. let's take a listen. >> this morning at approximately 7:50 in the morning, a fox lake police officer indicated he was out with three suspicious subjects. this was in the area of route 12 in fox lake. he described the subjects as two male whites and one male black. a short time thereafter he radioed into commune cautions that he was in a foot pursuit when communication was lost. a backup officer arrived on the scene and located him injure with a gunshot wound. there are three suspects at large. again described two male whites, one male black, i don't have a further description. at this point this is a two-pronged investigation so we have our -- we're looking into the apprehension of the three subjects at large. we're utilizing multiple resources for that.
10:08 am
we have numerous canines on the ground checking for scents. we have helicopters and aircrafts in the air. we have a large number of officers on foot conducting searches of the area. in connection with that, we're working the investigation of the officer who was injured. so the major crime task force, like county major crime task force, has been called in for that and is heading up that information. we'll have more information available as it progresses. possibly another press conference later this afternoon or this evening. at this time we're asking all area residents to remain inside, report any suspicious activity, any suspicious people by dialing 911 as we still have three offenders at large. thank you. >> that was the lake county sheriff's department which is handling this case. just to recap what we are following here. breaking news coming into cnn developing as we speak. the shooting of a police officer
10:09 am
in fox lake, illinois, something this community is not accustomed to. this is a suburb northwest of chicago that is certainly not known for violence at all. what we understand as you heard from the sheriff's office there was an officer in pursuit of three male suspects and they are at large. the officer following the suspicious subjects as he radioed into dispatch ended up losing communications with this batch. when backup officers came upon the scene they found him shot, he was injured, is we're awaiting details of what his condition is but this is a community right now under lockdown facing facing a giant manhunt by air, many officers on the ground, canine units involved as well. we are going to follow this developing story and have more after a quick break.

we have breaking news at cnn as this huge manhunt is under way in a suburb northwest of chicago. the officer who was shot by suspects there, we have just learned, has passed away. that he actually died at the scene. this is coming to us from a law enforcement source. the fox lake, illinois, police officer, i'm reading this, we just got this in, who was shot this morning at about 8:00 a.m. died at the scene. this is a law enforcement swhours has knowledge of the investigation is telling cnn at this time. this is an hour outside of chicago, this is a huge manhunt that is under way with officers, you can see them there in these pictures going door to door. schools are under lockdown as these three suspects described by authorities as to white men and one black man are at large
10:15 am
at this point. so, again, this officer shot near chicago this morning. we have just learned this breaking news coming into cnn. i want to bring in now. i'm being told we have christopher covelli, the representative from the lake county sheriff's office. first off, christopher, our condolences. this is -- i can only imagine what your department is going through with at this point. give us an update here as we've just learned that this officer was killed in this shooting. this morning at approximately 7:52 a.m. fox lake police officer radioed in that he was out with three suspects. he described them as being two male whites and two male blacks -- and two whites and a male black. shortly thereafter he called out that he was in foot pursuit. when radio communication was lost with him.
10:16 am
as backup arrived shortly thereafter on the scene and found the officer wounded with a gunshot wound. as of now, three subjects remain at large. two male whites and one male blacks. we have numerous resources in place in an attempt to apprehend these individuals. we have several aircraft in the air, numerous dogs on the ground, and many, many law enforcement officers on the ground as well. and we're working the investigation in conjunction with the apprehension of the offenders. >> you said a gunshot wound. was it a single gunshot wound? >> i can't confirm how many. >> give us a sense of this search. we've seen police officers on foot patrol, we've seen canine units, we know there are helicopters. how big is this search area and what is it like? it is resident snshl it looks like part of it may be wooded. >> it's both. we're searching in an area that
10:17 am
is wooded, swampy as well as a residential area. so we have numerous, numerous resources being used to apprehend these individuals. >> is this several square miles? is this a pretty small area? >> i can't comment on the exact area of the search area. >> and what are you telling residents? we understand a number of school district, schools, have been posting online to let parents know they're under lockdown. what are you advising them? >> absolutely. we're advising everybody to remain very conscientious, to remain locked down in their homes as well. if they see anything suspicious whatsoever please call 911 immediately, whether they think it's something nigh more to or something major. we're asking for the public to call if they see anything unusual or anybody matching these descriptions in this area. >> detective covelli, give us a sense of what this community is like. i know this is an area that is not accustomed to much crime
10:18 am
like this, right? this is a sort of peaceful, relatively peaceful, residential community. >> yeah. our county as a whole is a peaceful community so we're working on apprehending these individuals. >> and what can you tell us more information as it will be coming in? are there other plans for a press conference today? >> should more information develop, we'll look at having a press conference this afternoon or early evening. >> and just if you can -- i know the -- what we just have in now from a source is that the officer has passed away so that is something the department is confirming, correct? >> that's correct. >> our sincerest condolences to you. i know this will be a very tough loss for you and for the community. thanks so much for talking to us. >> thank you. bye-bye.
10:19 am
>> all right. do we have ryan young on the -- we have our law enforcement analyst tom fuentes joining us now on the phone. tom, this is what we have just learned. that this police officer was killed at the scene. give you give us a sense? it seems like this is something that has been known now for a couple hours and there's obviously been a delay in authorities putting it out there. what is the rationale behind that? >> well, probably notification of next of kin, brianna. i heard the same reporting that the officer had been killed but didn't want to say so on the air or confirm it until cnn or the police department was able to confirm it. i would think if this officer has family they're trying to locate the family and speak to them.
10:20 am
and if she has children in school to get the children and bring them out so that normally is the reason. the other problem here is that because he passed away at the scene the limited radio description that he gave is all they have to work on at the moment. so if he survived hopefully you can describe who the individuals are give an adequate description, identify them if they were apprehended but that won't be possible now so the hope is that the police, the major crimes task force has enough intelligence to know about if there's a burglary crew with two whites and a black oar robbery screw or some other group of known criminals that worked together like that that maybe that will help give them some indication of where to start looking as well as just the manhunt itself. it will be very difficult without a more detailed physical description. especially if they split up in
10:21 am
the middle of a work day and people can go and just walk around if there's no adequate description it will be very difficult. tom, stay with me. we'll get a quick break in after we recap what's happened just in to cnn. this police officer who was shot by -- shot near chicago about an hour northwest of chicago has died. we're learning that now from a source and it's been confirmed for us by the lake county sheriff's department which is overseeing this investigation in this manhunt. this normally peaceful, affluent, residential community facing a massive manhunt right now. schools under lockdown, police officers are going door to door. we'll talk with our law enforcement analyst about this manhunt after a quick break. i brought in some protein to help rearrange the fridge and get us energized! i'm new ensure active high protein.

. breaking news just into cnn. a police officer shot and killed in illinois. the police officer has just passed away we learned from officials in fox lake, illinois. this is a suburb of saying that is currently on lockdown as a massive manhunt is under way for three suspects. i want to bring in deb feyerick. she's been following the latest on this. we can see in these pictures that we're looking at, deb, there are so many officers on foot, helicopters, we just saw one go through the screen there and canine units as this community is on lockdown. >> absolutely. and obviously when you've got a police officer who's been involved in this kind of tragedy you're going to have a heavy, heavy police presence.
10:27 am
this individual was chasing three suspects. he was on foot. he actually radioed into dispatch in order to get help identifying where he was and after that communications ended. it appears he was injured, possibly shot by one of these individual individuals it's not clear whether they have a vehicle or may be driving now. we know this happened near u.s. route 12 which runs northwest to southeast through the chicago metropolitan area. if those individuals were able to get on the lieway, this manhunt is going to be a lot, lot larger. so you have canines trying to figure out where these suspects may have run after killing this police officer and where they might be now. we don't know how much information the police officer was able to give to dispatch
10:28 am
before chasing these individuals. we don't know and we're trying to find out whether, in fact, there were witnesses who may have seen what happened and who may be able to identify some sort of vehicles. all of this is part of an intense investigation. we know it happened at 8:00. the entire area, brianna is now on lockdown. you can see helicopters to that are penetrating to see if they can see individuals either in the community or along the treeline. we know the homes, schools, all of it on lockdown, people being told to stay inside. >> what authorities don't want to happen is they don't want to see a further tragedy by anybody who may be in that area who may encounter these three individuals. two white men, one african-american man. that's who authorities right now are looking for. the sheriff is involved the. lake county major crime task
10:29 am
force is heading up the investigation. you have atf and other agencies pitching in because one of their own has been shot and killed. brianna? >> deb, stay with me. i want to talk to ryan young, our cnn correspondent on the ground heading from chicago right now to this community of fox lake, illinois, where this police officer has been shot and killed and the suspects are currently at large. ryan, this is -- talking to officials there, this is not a community that is accustomed to violence of this magnitude at all. this is a suburb and a relatively peaceful community where people live, go about their lives, we see wooded areas known for being a lake area that draws people. >> and people use the homes for weekend homes so one things officers will have to contend where is that the homes that may
10:30 am
not be occupied for the week is people who are out of town and use the homes for weekend being on the lake. you could have the three suspects who may have gone into a vacant home in the area and they'll have to put a search point out there to make sure none of the homes that are vacant during the week are used by the three suspects. the officer on foot patrol seeing these three and making that call in, was he able to give a description of what the people were wearing? the shoes they were wearing in? the shirts? that's something we'll have to learn more about in the next few hours. we're about ten miles out. i'll tell you once we get on the ground we'll know more information about that search pattern but as you talked about all the law enforcement has swung into the area with helicopters and canines on the ground trying to figure out where these three suspects are. the two white males and one black male. >> ryan, stay with me on the pho phone. i want to get back to deb. the police officers are going door to door looking in yards.
10:31 am
they have canines with them as they are scour iing this is an area with weekend homes which is a deja vu to what we saw in that intense manhunt for two escaped convicts in upstate new york not too long ago. this is the challenge that officers really have cut out for them if these suspects are indeed in hiding. >> and there's no question about it. if these suspects entered a vacant home thinking perhaps they could hide and regroup then, in fact, officers are going to have to go door to door. if they decided to get as far away from the scene as possible. that, too, all of these are factors that police are going to have to contend with. the fact that these three individuals are armed, the fact that now a police officer is dead, all of that is going to factor into the intensity of this search. you can see the officers there
10:32 am
going around the corner. you know, whether many people have left their lake homes to return, labor day is coming up on monday so that may still be in that area, in that vicinity so you have a lot of people and that's whey they've been told to lock down, shelter in place, don't go out of their homes, at least give police and other authorities, the sheriff and his deputies to see if they can find it. if you look, brianna, in the right-hand corner you can see the major highway. this took place near u.s. 12 which is a heavily trafficked highway that cut us there the chicago metropolitan area so whether these three decided to stay in the area or get out as fast as they possibly could all of that will impact the search that takes place. best case scenario is if somebody witnessed the shooting, identified the license plate, if
10:33 am
there was a car and that will be a much faster way for authorities to close in on these individuals. >> and in between those homes in that highway, we see train tracks as well. certainly a concern for officers the there. this is a community, fox lake, illinois, on lockdown. there's a massive manhunt under way for three suspects. two are white male, one is a black male. that's what officials are telling us. an officer has died in fox lake, illinois. we'll share details after a quick break. ♪ irresistible moments deserve irresistibles treats. new from meow mix with real salmon chicken or tuna. the only treat cats ask for by name.

10:40 am
is surprising is this is an area of low crime. this is an area not accustomed to violent crime like this. >> right. this is not -- fox lake is not renown for crime. it's a middle-class, lower-middle-class community with many vacation homes that have been converted into year round homes. mchenry county in general not renown for crime. there was an officer-involved shooting here last year involving mchenry county sheriff's officers and fox lake is split between mchenry county and lake county. so this i would say is the biggest crime to hit the area in some time. >> some of the pictures we're looking at, we see one officer with his partner, one of them has a canine with him, a police
10:41 am
dog, and he's gone up to the front porch of a house, obviously, to inform a woman there of what's going on. what are officials telling residents in the area? what are the concerns here about public safety? >> well, officers are telling residents to stay in their homes. this is a massive search. they couldn't give a perimeter for the search but i know grant community high school was reported to be on lockdown as well as other schools in the area. some businesses that are closer to state route road and route 12 where this incident occurred are closed. other businesses are open but officers are telling people to stay in their homes. >> what is this area like near satan road and route 12 which is a thoroughfare through the area and i know there's also some
10:42 am
officers patrolling the train tracks. we know there's wooded areas in this community. is this a place that is frequented and there's traffic? >> there is route 12 like you said is a thorough sphere there is plenty of traffic traveling down route 12. satan road is just off of route 12, it could almost be considered a frontage road and there are shop, there was a small strip mall, a mechanic sh shop. there appeared to be a veterinary hospital and there was some wooded area. there's metro stop not far from where this incident occurred so when the police were originally blocking it off they had to turn
10:43 am
quite a few cars away that were trying to do business in that are area. >> you said there's a metro stop not too far. we see train track, i don't know if that's train tracks for the metro. we don't know at this point. what are you hearing if these suspects could have found transportation either by car or would they have been able to access the met slow in is that a concern you're hearing from officials? >> well, i know that this search search has interrupted service on the metra train line so i think it's a concern, the number of officers in that area. officers have turned people away from the train station. at this point, officers are telling us the suspects fled on foot so they -- other than that, it's not really clear if they got a ride or hotted on a train or anything like that.
10:44 am
>> now, you said that officials you've spoken with are not giving a perimeter. we just spoke with the spokesman, the detective who is representing the lake county sheriff's department as well. we asked him how big is the search area and that was not something he would reveal, probably, for very good reason, i would imagine. are officials trying to keep their cards close to the vest to make sure their movements aren't known by suspects? >> yeah. i would think that is what they're doing. their presence is very obvious but how far their presence extends i think they just don't want people to know. >> are you getting any sense talking to officials there about any of the circumstances surrounding the killing of this police officer?
10:45 am
do you know anything about the suspects or circumstances of what they think happened or are officials sort of at a loss and limited by what minimal information they got over the radio from the officer? >> what i heard was the same information they got over the radio from the officer that he initiated this interaction because he saw some -- what he believed to be suspicious activity involving two white males and one black male he radioed he got into a foot pursuit with these individuals and then sheriffs lost connection with him. so it's not clear why the shooting occurred. it's not clear what the suspicious activity was that the officer witnessed. there's a lot of unanswered questions right now. >> there certainly are. katie dahlstrom, a reporter with

now in position involved in this manhunt in what is really a residential community that is on lockdown at this point. you see that helicopter there on your screen. i do want to tell our viewers that these are pictures we're bringing to you on considerable delay. we don't want to interfere with police operations there. and this is a wooded area, sort of a swampy, meadow area that is behind some homes in the area. you can see officers there on foot. there are k-9 units and officers going door to door talking to residents. telling them to stay indoors. schools are on lockdown at this point. we know that this officer was killed around -- shot around 8:00 a.m. this morning central time. he had radioed for backup as he was in pursuit of three suspects. that's what officials there are telling us and the search for those suspects continue. i do want to get to ryan young.

he's our cnn correspondent. we talked a moment ago, you were en route to the area. are you there yet? are you seeing any of the search going on? >> reporter: definitely. we are here. we're driving around the area now. you can see as soon as you get into town, officers are everywhere. in fact, they're in neighborhoods. they have their weapons pulled out. people are watching them, but you can tell through the community they have set up several areas where they have plotted off a section, an area cordoned off. teams are working in camouflage and officers in plainclothes and uniform officers. one thing we did know us the all the different -- all the different jurisdictions that flooded into the area and are working their way through the neighborhoods. you do see that helicopter overhead. it's doing the circles in the circle pattern. not sure if they're focused on the area just yet, but it is interesting to watch how they have blocked off certain sections of the community as we work our way through to -- in

terms of where officers are. every block it seems like there's a different group of officers from a different jurisdiction. >> and this is along a route that is route 12. this is a considerable thoroughfare, as we are telling our viewers. and there are also train tracks there, right? this is metro rail. this is the local commuter train that goes through. we just learned from a local reporter on the ground that metro service has been affected for the area. so certainly interrupted. the thought -- the last we heard, ryan, was that these suspects, three of them, had gone off on foot, but certainly there must be concern that they could have either found a car or made their way away from the area on rail. >> reporter: certainly. we were told actually that the metro service here had been suspended. we passed the high school that is obviously on lockdown and the library as well. they say it's temporarily closed. one of the things we wanted to point out here, an officer out
10:54 am
on foot what did he see, what was the initial description he was able to give back to the fellow officers before the foot pursuit started? then we're looking into the neighborhoods where a lot of them have boats. a lot of them have tarps on their boats. could these suspects have run into someone's backyard and jumped into a boat? there's a lot of questions about exactly what's going on. we came in on route 12. didn't see a heavy officer presence for most of our ride in and then once we got into the city it was a complete change. we can see officers riding around in unmarked vehicle, marked vehicles. we saw people sitting on top of the roofs looking over to see what officers were doing. so everyone is aware of what's going on, wondering what's going to happen next. obviously with a city of 10,000 people and all the officers flooding into the area, you know more than likely someone is going to call in if they see something suspicious. >> yeah. that's the hope. ryan young, stand by as we cover
